Lot 41: Autograph - Royalty - Queen Victoria an extremely

by Mullock's Specialist Sporting Auctioneers

2009

United Kingdom

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Autograph - Royalty - Queen Victoria an extremely rare original pencil sketch by Queen Victoria dated August 12th 1834 (when she was still Princess aged 15. The sketch on a Biblical theme shows 'Rebecca at the Well' and is titled by Victoria in her handwriting and signed by her with a most uncharacteristically small signature and dated in her hand . Image size approx 10x8 ins, framed and glazed [possibly in original frame] with label to verso stating 'Sketch by Princess Victoria (afterwards Queen). Bought for 5 guineas by Mrs Jeddere-Fisher of Great Culverden at a Bazaar held at Tunbridge Wells in Nov 1834 and opened by Princess Victoria.' A further note states : 'Presented to Elizabeth A Franklin by Miss Mary Venables of Larkbear Cumnor Hill 29 August 1944.' Original art by Queen Victoria is of considerable rarity. Victoria chose sketching and painting as her hobby and later in her life studied under Landseer and became a most competent amateur. This is arguably the earliest example of her sketching ever to appear on the market. It is somewhat naive in style but shows potential which was to blossom in later life under her illustrious tutor.
