FAIRY SEIOBO WITH THE PEACH OF LONG LIFE

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

May 14, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €350 - €700

Description: Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent. Seiobo is here depicted as slender tall lady and appears as sennin, recognizable by the yomogi-leaf robe. Her hair is amusing in the form of little balls around her shoulder - which looks like a strange fur collar. She holds a small basket and the Peach of Long Life. Seiobo is, to be exact, the "Royal Mother of the West" (identical with Xiwangmu in China), in whose palace garden of the Kunlun mountains these peaches ripen every 3000 years. The sennin variation (immortal mountain hermit) is purely Japanese. Well-crafted depiction, smiling Chines. facial features, Himotoshi in back. HEIGHT 8 CM From an old Munich collection

Laura Bridgman autograph quotation signed

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $800

Description: BRIDGMAN, LAURA DEWEY. (1829-1889). The first blind, deaf-mute educated by systematic means using a raised alphabet. AQS. ("Laura D. Bridgman"). ½ p. 8vo. N.p., N.d. ----- "Thou art my rock & my fortress. I enjoy the privilege of reading the precious Bible & psalms & other books with my fingers." ----- After scarlet fever destroyed her sight and hearing at age two (as well as her senses of smell and taste), Laura Dewey Bridgman was brought to the attention of Dr. Samuel G. Howe, director of the Watertown, Massachusetts Perkins Institute for the Blind. In 1837 he accepted Bridgman as his pupil. Howe had made a previous attempt to teach a deaf and blind student but failed, he postulated, because the individual had reached adulthood. Bridgman, at eight years old, was receptive to his methods and, despite the slow pace of the work, eventually learned to read and write, achievements that earned both Howe and Bridgman widespread attention. When Charles Dickens traveled to the U.S. in 1842 he visited Bridgman and included a chapter about her in his volume entitled American Notes, earning her even greater fame. At the age of twenty, Bridgman completed her education at Perkins and briefly returned to her family's farm in New Hampshire. Unaccustomed to being alone for long periods of time, her health began to deteriorate. In response, Howe and Bridgman's close friend, Dorothea Dix, raised an endowment to establish a permanent home for her at Perkins. For the rest of her life she lived at Perkins and taught needlework. Bridgman also maintained a prolific correspondence and devoted much of her time to reading the Bible, to which our quote refers. In 1886, after Helen Keller's parents wrote to the Perkins Institute seeking help for their deaf blind child, the institute sent Ann Mansfield Sullivan, a graduate of the institute who was familiar with Dr. Howe's files before she traveled to the Kellers' home. Upon her arrival, she gave Helen a doll that Bridgman had made for her. Though Helen Keller's amazing achievements are well known, it was her predecessor, Bridgman, who made her education possible. Written in pencil. Folded with tape residue on the verso from previous mounting. In good condition and rare.

Gunpowder Incident.- Proceedings of the House of Burgesses of Virginia

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

May 21, 2015, 12:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £2,000 - £3,000

Description: Gunpowder Incident.- Proceedings (The) of the House of Burgesses of Virginia, Convened in General Assembly, on Thursday the first day of June, 1775 , 48pp., some light spotting, last f. creased and dust-soiled, Williamsburg, Alexander Purdie , [1775]; bound with 8 other unrelated 18th & 19th century pamphlets, including one relating to salmon fishing, together in contemporary half sheep, rubbed at edges, 4to . An extremely significant and apparently scarce record of a key development in the build up to the American War of Independence, largely comprising addresses, reports and correspondence between the House of Burgesses in Virginia and the Royal Governor John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. Dunmore had ordered the removal of the gunpowder from the magazine at Williamsburg on the 20th of April 1775 due to anxiety at the increasing tensions, notably evidenced by the Battles of Lexington & Concorde that had taken place just one day before. When news of the removal of the powder spread numerous local militia descended upon the scene and demanded its return, and the situation over a short period of time deteriorated, forcing Dunmore to take refuge aboard the HMS Fowey on the York River, effectively ending Royal control of the colony of Virginia. We can find only two copies held in British institutions and five in America.

Estimated Price: $3,275 - $4,500

Description: 1 of 1.Faithful Eyes-Mixed Media Original on paper-by Renata Lledias-Includes Certificate of Authenticity Signed by The Artist. Measurements Approx. 13" x 18"

Condition Report: Excellent Condition-Renata was born in Mexico City on February 8, 1966. The second of six siblings whose passion for the arts is clear and evident. As a child she felt a great love and attraction for the arts, but the fear of their parents to not be a lucrative career, would lead her to the Faculty of medicine, which would leave for marriage and motherhood. Countless changes of residence and in her life did it not continue with her career, but until the year 1998 when in Australia, had the opportunity to study and graduate in Visual Arts at the Chisholm Institute in Melbourne, under the tutelage of the South African artist David Trout, in where she gained recognition for his early work, obtaining several awards at various exhibitions including his solo exhibition, shortly before her return to Mexico. Her works are mainly figurative which lead us to a romantic almost naive dream, where his life and its internal recognition are caught between warm colours, feelings, and new experiences, that capture the viewer and transport it in her enigmatic, sensual air and with a lot of symbolic language. Her compositions speak directly to the viewer and not about angst or pain.

Shawl of Many Colors-Mixed Media Original Renata- 27 x 35

by Nova Art Auctions

May 7, 2015, 6:30 PM PST

Vista, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,500 - $8,500

Description: 1 of 1.Shawl-by Renata Lledias.Original Mixed media on canvas. Includes Certificate of Authenticity Signed by The Artist. Measurements Approx. 27" x 35"
