The remaining porcelain of the Imperial Porcelain Factory, attested by the mark of Nikolaus II on the base, was redesigned with new décors by artists such as the Suprematists El Lissitzky and Malevich (see Cyrillic word for ‘Suprematism’ on the base). Their idea was to transfer modern painting to applied arts. With the rise of Stalinism, this art movement became prosecuted because it was of too little use for the fomenting purposes of the new government.Condition:The porcelain plate is besides partially minimal losses of color in very good condition. It is 44.3 cm in diameter.Nikolai Suetin (1897-1954)From 1918 to 1922, Nikolai Suetin studied at the Art Institute of Vitesbk under the guidance of Kazimir Malevich, the founder of Suprematism, an early abstract art movement with non-objective geometric shapes. Since 1920, he exhibited several times, for instance with the UNOVIS group. From 1923, he lived in Petrograd and worked at the State Lomonosov ceramic manufactory. Suetin was a member of the State Art Institute, the GINKhUK, and worked there in the experimental workshop and later at the Institute of Art History. Since 1932, he was the chief artist in the artistic laboratory of the Leningrad Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. Suetin also worked as a book illustrator and exhibition designer. Ferdowsi (Abdu'l-Qasim) - [Shahnameh (The Book of Kings)],

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

September 17, 2015, 11:00 AM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £4,000

Description: 380ff Persian manuscript in black nasta'liq script, titles in red, 25 lines in 4 columns, borders ruled in red and blue, illuminated with 2 decorated headpieces and 62 miniatures in the text, most heightened in gold and/or silver, some images extending out into margins, a few marginal inscriptions, some scattered spots and stains, some repairs to margins of preliminary and penultimates leaves, with slight loss to text of final leaf, Persian export stamps to first and last leaves of text (dated 1308 AH [1890/91 AD]), later calf, painted vellum pannel to upper cover and blank vellum pannel to lower cover, spine with raised bands, gilt, rubbed and a little scuffed, 4to (c.360 x 220mm), [Iran], 1239 AH [1823-24 AD]. The Shahnameh is a long epic poem about the mythical (and sometimes historical) past of the Persian Empire, it is also apparently the longest epic to have been written by a single poet. It is the national epic of Iran and often considered one of the most important pieces of Persian literature as Ferdowsi deliberately refrained from using any words drawn from the Arabic language in an atempt to preserve the Persian language after the Arab conquest of Persia in the 7th century. Curiuosly the colophon ends with a small tribute to the poet þrdowsi died in the year 416 [1025-26 AD]'.

HARRY S. TRUMAN Typed Letter Signed as President on White House Stationery

by Early American

August 29, 2015, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,400 - $2,800

Description: AutographsPresident Harry Truman Compares Himself to President Thomas Jefferson!" ... if I am unconstitutional so was old Tom - but I don't think either of us have been."HARRY S. TRUMAN (1884-1972). Thirty-Third President of the United States, who Authorized Dropping of the First Atomic Bomb on Japan to End World War II.May 19, 1952-Dated, Typed Letter Signed, "Harry" as President, 1 page, 7" x 8.75", Octavo, Choice Extremely Fine+. Typed upon official “The White House, Washington,” letterhead stationery, to Secretary of the Treasury, John W. Snyder. Bright, clean and fresh, it appears virtually mint in quality. It reads, in full:"Dear John: --- I am enclosing you copy of a letter which Thomas Jefferson wrote to J. B. Colvin. This is the letter I was telling you about yesterday when you were at the House. You will see that if I am unconstitutional so was old Tom - but I don't think either of us have been. -- Sincerely yours, - (Signed) Harry”.cc: Honorable John W. Snyder, Secretary of the Treasury, Department of the Treasury, Washington, D. C."Also included is the five page typed transcript of Thomas Jefferson's September 20, 1810, letter to J.B. Colvin enclosed by President Truman, as copied "from 'The Writings of Thomas Jefferson,' Vol. XIII," which states in part: "The question you propose, whether circumstances do not sometimes occur, which make it a duty in officers of high trust, to assume authorities beyond the law, is easy of solution in principle, but sometimes embarrassing in practice. A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means ... " (2 items)On April 8, 1952, President Truman took control of the steel industry in order to avert a nationwide strike. The labor contract between the United Steelworkers Union and U.S. steel manufacturers had expired on December 31, 1951. The Wage Stabilization Board ruled that workers should be given a 26¢ per hour raise, but steel manufacturers refused to grant the raise because the Office of Price Stabilization would not raise the price of steel. Negotiations stalled and the President feared that a strike would crippler the country's war effort in Korea. With a strike set to begin at midnight on April 81h, he decided to take control of the steel industry. In a radio and television address on the night of April 8, 1952, President Truman declared, "Our national security and our chances for peace depend on our defense production. Our defense production depends on steel... I have no doubt that if our defense program fails, the danger of war, the possibility of hostile attack, grows that much greater. I would not be faithful to my responsibilities as President ifl did not use every effort to keep this from happening." On April 9, 1952, steel company owners filed their first legal challenges to the order. In the case of Youngstown Sheet & Tubing Co. v. Sawyer, an injunction was granted in U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Pine's court to the steel industry restraining Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer from seizing the mills. The injunction was stayed by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pending an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.Senate Republican leader Styles Bridges said Truman's action was unconstitutional and illegal, "Never in the history of the United States has a President acted with such disregard of the Constitution, the law, and the will of the Congress and the people ... The President's assertion of independence of the law and Congress, embodied in his claim to 'inherent rights,' is just a new name for the outworn doctrine of the divine right of kings. In truth, a king has been beheaded for similar attempts to override the will of the people ... "On May 12th and 131h, 1952, the Supreme Court heard arguments on the constitutionality of Truman's seizure of the steel industry. The Justice Department asked that the Court overturn Judge Pine's ruling that the seizure was "illegal and without authority of law." The steel industry asked the Court to uphold Pine's decision.President Truman wrote this letter to his Secretary of the Treasury as the nine Justices of the Supreme Court were deliberating. Two weeks later, on June 2, 1952, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against the President. The steel strike continued for 53 days until July 24, when it settled at the White House.

When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. Stow Wengenroth

by East Coast Books

September 12, 2015, 7:00 PM EST

Wells, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: Stow Wengenroth (1906-1978) American artist and lithographer, born in 1906 in Brooklyn, New York. Wengenroth was once called "America's greatest living artist working in black and white" by the American realist painter Andrew Wyeth, and he is generally considered to be one of the finest American lithographers of the twentieth century. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under George Brant Bridgeman and John Carlson from 1923 to 1927, then at the Grand Central School of Art under Wayman Adams. Wengenroth was elected a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters (renamed the American Academy of Arts and Letters) in 1942 and was also a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Prairie Printmakers. He was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy of Design in 1938, and a full Academician in 1941. Wengenroth was also the author of several influential books on lithography. Wengenroth's lithographs are found in most major American collections, including the Library of Congress, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. During his career, Wengenroth became well-known for his detailed depictions of the seascapes and landscapes of New England and, particularly, Maine . As an artist, he eschewed colour in his lithographs but rather focused on shadow, light, and form to transmit detail and dimension. While his urban scenes of Manhattan and the New York City environs are especially coveted by the current market, Wengenroth was most adept at creating sincere yet vivid simulacra of the New England littoral and interior. Offered here is an unsigned 2-sided watercolor. Sand dunes on one side and a most unusual abstraction watercolor on the other. Unusual abstraction on the one side. This is guaranteed, without a time limit, to be by Stow Wengenroth and we will send along a letter of guarantee to the winning bidder. This piece is approx. 14-3/4 x 19-3/4 in. His watercolors & drawings are quite uncommon.

When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. It was this boy, long grown to manhood who was the paint one of the most famous portraits of Lincoln. One of his Lincoln portraits hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom in The White House. The valley and surrounding territory have been known from ancient times as Nepal Mandala.
