Estimated Price: CAD400 - CAD500

Description: ROBERT ARCHAMBEAU (1933 - ) COVERED JAR WITH BRONZE LID clay and bronze, height 9.25" -- 23.5 cm., diameter 9" -- 22.9 cm., incised initials to underside of lid Provenance: Prime Gallery, Toronto, ON Note: ROBERT ARCHAMBEAU (1933 - ) "My aim in creating is not the decoration, or didactic, or clay as entertainment. The work is not political. It is, I hope, in some measure, a distillation of the magic and mystery that surrounds me on this, my part of the Pre-Cambrian Shield and at its best is serene, rich in detail, detached from the mundane, and timeless". - Robert Archambeau - Artist Robert Archambeau has been an indisputable force in Canadian ceramics for over fifty years, and has earned an international reputation for his functional pots, with their confident profiles, subtle wood-fired glazes, and meticulous finishes. Robert Archambeau was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1933. After serving in the U.S. Marines for four years, he worked in a factory to earn enough money to put himself through university. He received his Bachelor in Fine Arts (Studio Arts) in 1959 from Bowling Green, Ohio and completed his MFA in Studio Ceramics in 1964 at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Archambeau went on to teach for four years at the Rhode Island School of Design before moving to Canada in 1968. He started teaching at the University of Manitoba's School of Art, and became a full professor and head of the Ceramics Department, before retiring in 1991. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, Archambeau studied and worked in the Far East, in particular with Akio Takamori in the studio of Jun Knack in Higashiura Aichi Prefecture. His experiences in Japan, China, and Korea, greatly influenced his style of work, which has been described as "serene, rich in detail, yet detached from the mundane and timeless." Archambeau's art has recently taken a new direction, exploring drawing as an independent art form rather than a preparatory exercise which he has always done for his vessels. Archambeau's works are included in major collections across Canada and Japan. He has also exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2003, he became the first Manitoban to win the prestigious Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts and in 2014 was awarded the Manitoba Arts Council's Award of Distinction. He lives in Bissett, Manitoba, where he continues to produce wood-fired bowls, vases, teapots and lidded containers. Description: EDWARD HILLEL (1953 - )ROOFTOPSBLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH; SIGNED AND NUMBERED 7/2513" x 19" - 33 x 48.3 cm.Provenance:Robin Rosenberg Fine Art, Montreal, QCNote:EDWARD HILLEL (1953 - )"The challenge to every artist using the tragedies of history and memory in their work is to locate his place vis-à-vis the facts; for in addition to our desire to create lasting, autonomous works of art that instruct and inspire, we have a responsibility to the dead, to all those victims of genocide. Our activity, our work, is a kind of incantation, a Kaddish or a prayer of remembrance."- Edward Hillel - Canadian Edward Hillel, is a world-renowned multidisciplinary artist, whose production includes photography, video, prints and installations. His works explore urgent contemporary themes rooted in human stories.Edward Hillel was born in 1953 in Baghdad, Iraq. He grew up in Montreal, Quebec, and graduated from McGill University in 1975, having studied political science and philosophy. He spent several years as a community organizer before devoting himself wholly to his art since 1990. A self-taught artist, his works are a form of gesammtkunstwerk, a total engagement with the world he inhabits. A recurring theme for his work has been the stories of Holocaust survivors and the members of the resistance. These works saw an evolution over time that went from standard portraits with audio recordings to multimedia displays built into portable installations, as in "The Birds are Back" (1999). In 2006, Hillel opened his art space in Harlem, New York and, in 2008, founded the Harlem Bienniale, an international arts & culture event that takes place in Harlem, New York.Hillel's photographs have appeared in publications such as Le Monde, Esquire, Fortune, Newsweek and Paris Match. His films have been screened at international festivals, in museums, and broadcast on ARTE, CBC, FUJI TV, PBS and CHANNEL FOUR. He has published several books, including Not Quite Mainstream: Canadian Jewish Short Stories (2001). He has received the German Critics Visual Arts Prize (Berlin), The Golden Sheaf Film Award (Canada), the Prix Alain de Rothschild (France), and the Spiro Institute Award (UK). Description: JACK SURES (1934 - ), O.C. LARGE PLATE clay, height 2.5" -- 6.4 cm., diameter 11" -- 27.9 cm., incised signature and dated 98 Provenance: Susan Whitney Gallery, Regina, SK Note: JACK SURES (1934 - ), O.C. "My love of clay as an expressive material, with its innate ability to create any and all other materials, its ability to reinvent itself every time it is touched, has endowed my life with a richness and completeness that few people seem to achieve in their lifetimes. My hope is that this richness and completeness is reflected in the work and this spirit is transferred to the viewer." - Jack Sures - Manitoban Jack Sures is one of Canada's most celebrated ceramic artists and educators, known for his ceramic sculpture and murals in diverse media including stoneware, porcelain and raku. His work is both whimsical and humorous, often portraying a caricature of human behavior. His trademark bandicoots, or "beasts" as Sures refers to them, often figure in many of his ceramic works. Jack Joseph Sures was born in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1934, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. He attended the Winnipeg School of Art under the tutelage of Canadian artists, George Swinton (RCA) and Robert Nelson. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1959 from the University of Manitoba and continued on to obtain a Master of Arts, with a double major in painting and printmaking, from Michigan State University. During this time, he took one ceramics course, which was the impetus that initiated his largely self-taught career in clay. Sures moved to London, England in 1960, where he worked part-time at the Chelsea Pottery, practicing his skills as a thrower. After traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East, he returned to Winnipeg in 1962 to set up his own pottery studio. Within two years of opening, he received a commission to create a mural for the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. In 1965, Sures was given the opportunity to establish the Printmaking and Ceramics programs at the University of Saskatchewan's Regina Campus. In 1969, Sures became the Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the University, shifting his focus from teaching to printmaking, all the while continuing to create ceramics, including murals. He also exhibited across Canada and the United States. It was also during the late 1960's to the mid 1970's that the Regina Clay Movement was started. Sures, along with Joe Fafard, David Gilhooly, Lorne Beug, Marilyn Levine and others, dissociated themselves with the mid-twentieth century modernism, in favor of the pop movement style that emerged from California. Sarcasm, wit, and personal expression were the essence of their art. Sures received numerous accolades and awards during his career. Supported by a Canada Council grant, only the third such grant to be awarded to a ceramic artist, he travelled to Japan in 1966 to study its culture and ceramics. In 1972, Sures received his second Canada Council Grant to work at the French studio of Albert Diato, a friend of Picasso's, and in 1973, he was appointed by the United Nations International Labour Office, Handcraft Development Program to set up a ceramics program on the Caribbean Island of Grenada. Sures' ingenuity shone through when he engineered a kiln that could use nutmeg shells from the abundant local resource as its fuel. Sures returned to Regina in 1975 to teach ceramics. He continued to exhibit his work and received large commissions including an outdoor mural at the Sturdy-Stone Building in Saskatoon in 1978, that was a huge project covering 884 square meters. In 1987, he won a competition for a mural at the new Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec, and in 1989, Sures received the Grand Prize at the Second International Ceramics Competition in Mino, Japan, the foremost international ceramic competition held in Japan every three years. He had created a thirty by twenty-four meter wall sculpture using the leftover tiles from his mural at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. In 1991, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, being recognized for a lifetime of outstanding achievement and dedication to the community and service to the nation. He was elected to the International Academy of Ceramics that year as well. In 1998, Jack Sures retired from the University of Regina, having served thirty years teaching, with the honorary title Professor Emeritus. In 2003, he was awarded the Award of Merit, Saskatchewan's highest honor. Sures lives in Regina, where he continues to create in his own studio and exhibit his work. by Auctionata AG

Estimated Price: €1,200 - €1,500

Description: Carved woodPersia, late 18th Century Signed 'Sepahi-zadeh al-Sayyed Khalil Dede'Dated '213 Hidjra'Inscription as a call to GodWith old collection label and number (F.R. Martin)Length: 16 cmGood state of preservation according to ageProvenance: ex-collection F.R. Martin, thence Austrian private collectionThis well-preserved wooden kashkul begging bowl in typical nutlike form is extensively carved all-over with inscriptions and foliage. The underside is adorned with a five-pointed star, a symbol for the five pillars of Islam. The inscription 'la fata illa 'ali la sayf illa dhu'l-faqar' - a call to God, Muhammad and the Twelve Imams - translates into 'There is no youth [as brave as] 'Ali, no sword [as sharp as] dhu'l-faqar'. The sword, given by the prophet Muhammad to his son in law Ali ibn Abi Talib is one of the most important symbols in Shi'ite belief and it is attributed with magical powers. The kashkul bowl is signed 'work of Sepahi-zadeh al-Sayyed Khalil Dede' and dated '[1] 213 AH/1798-9 AD'. Begging bowls of this kind were used by so-called dervishes, Sufi ascetics, to collect alms. These mendicants had chosen a life in poverty and modesty rejecting any kind of material wealth. The begging bowl is in a good state of preservation according to its age. The underside shows a hole and the reverse shows a burn mark. On the inside there is an old collection label with number. The bowl measures 16 cm in length.Collection F.R. MartinAt the turn of the Century the Swedish scholar and art historian Fredrik Robert Martin (1868-1933) travelled through much of Persia. By the 1920s he had compiled an extensive and historically important collection of Islamic art, illustrating the craftsmanship of bygone dynasties. During his lifetime F.R. Martin authored many books on the subject of Islamic arts and crafts. Many of the items from the collection, about which an extensive catalogue was published, are nowadays held in the Medelhavsmuseet and the Ethnographical Museum in Stockholm. I see it as a central division of Canada, separating the prairie, foothills and mountains of Western Canada from the jack pine and granite of Northern Ontario (Group of Seven country). The natural beauty of forest and lake are an inspiration to me. I like canoeing and fishing. Technically, I admire versatility and tend toward illustration. Collage and composite ideas appeal to me. My work follows a natural evolution which defines its style. Art for me is a lifelong process and a magical journey that holds endless fascination."- Luther Pokrant -Born in Rosenfeld, Manitoba in 1947, Luther Pokrant received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1969, and his Master of Arts from New Mexico State University. Upon his return to Canada, he worked for several years as a designer and display artist for the Hudson's Bay Company and Eaton's of Canada. He was a lecturer at the University of Regina from 1974 to 1977, and also taught lithography and painting at Th Emma Lake worshops in 1974 and 1976. He also was and instructor in drawing, painting, and art history at various schools, including the Forum Art Institute and Symposium Art School in Winnipeg, and at Red River College. Pokrant has exhibited extensively for over 30 years across Canada in solo and group shows, and his work is represented in numerous private and public collections. In 1994, he was elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The condition of the Serigraphs has been rated as follows: A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling Here are some additional details about the Barnet: Promotional poster for the ASPCA, 1979, signed and titled in pencil by Will Barnet. Will Barnet was an American printmaker and painter known for elegantly stylized portraits and classically composed visions of beautiful women and children and animals, both in casual scenes of daily life and in transcendent dreamlike worlds. Barnet's artistic career was defined in that it, according to Doty, "has always gone beyond the limitations of modern art because his work affirms a faith in life." He has been the subject of over eighty solo exhibitions held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of American Art of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The National Academy of Design Museum, The National Museum of American Art, The Montclair Art Museum, The Boca Raton Museum of Art, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art. Again, this lot is for 5 of the SAME Serigraph, NOT a mixed or assorted group of Serigraph.

Estimated Price: $3,275 - $4,500

Description: 1 of 1.Faithful Eyes-Mixed Media Original on paper-by Renata Lledias-Includes Certificate of Authenticity Signed by The Artist. Measurements Approx. 13" x 18"

Condition Report: Excellent Condition-Renata was born in Mexico City on February 8, 1966. The second of six siblings whose passion for the arts is clear and evident. As a child she felt a great love and attraction for the arts, but the fear of their parents to not be a lucrative career, would lead her to the Faculty of medicine, which would leave for marriage and motherhood. Countless changes of residence and in her life did it not continue with her career, but until the year 1998 when in Australia, had the opportunity to study and graduate in Visual Arts at the Chisholm Institute in Melbourne, under the tutelage of the South African artist David Trout, in where she gained recognition for his early work, obtaining several awards at various exhibitions including his solo exhibition, shortly before her return to Mexico. Her works are mainly figurative which lead us to a romantic almost naive dream, where his life and its internal recognition are caught between warm colours, feelings, and new experiences, that capture the viewer and transport it in her enigmatic, sensual air and with a lot of symbolic language. Her compositions speak directly to the viewer and not about angst or pain.

Lot 78: Reginald Marsh American, 1898-1954 The Date, 1932 Signed Reginald Marsh and dated 1932 (lr); inscrib...

by Doyle New York

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70,000 - $90,000

Description: Reginald Marsh American, 1898-1954 The Date, 1932 Signed Reginald Marsh and dated 1932 (lr); inscribed as titled and signed Reginald Marsh on an old exhibition label affixed to the stretcher Tempera on gessoed linen laid to masonite 24 x 17 7/8 inches Provenance: Gift of the artist to Dr. Harold R. Rice, Wynnewood, PA By descent in the family to the current owner Exhibited: The Women's Club of Orange, Exhibition of Contemporary and Modern Art, n.d. In 1949, Reginald Marsh was appointed to the position of Head of the Department of Paintings at the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia (today known as the Moore College of Art and Design) by Dr. Harold R. Rice, Dean of the Institute. Marsh enjoyed a close association with the Moore Institute of Art, also teaching advanced painting there from 1953 until his death the following year. The present work was a gift from Marsh to Dr. Rice, a close friend. It hung for many years in the Rice home in Wynnewood, PA. Although Reginald Marsh worked in oils early in his career, in 1929 he met Thomas Hart Benton, and "recorded in a notebook, 'Met Tom Benton.. Comes up to my studio and shows me how to paint with eggs-fortunate event.' A few years later, Ralph Mayer recalled the experiments with tempera that both Marsh and Kenneth Hayes Miller. carried out in 1929: 'Marsh finally worked out a satisfactory formula with yolk of egg glazes as in watercolor but on white gesso. "Only this and nothing more' except a coat of Varnish [Mayer 1933]. Marsh later described being introduced to egg tempera by Benton and by Denys Worton (1887-1958). 'It opened up a new world to me. Egg is a fine "draughtsman's" vehicle and very easy to handle. The luminosity and clearness of drawing is preserved, yet a certain greasy quality of the yolk gives a 'fat' oil effect. Drying is instantaneous and superimposed brushstrokes are easily made... I put egg yolk on a kind of belt line production for a dozen years and chucked oil forever.' Marsh said he used egg tempera from 1929 until he became dissatisfied with it in 1939." [Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, "Old Master Recipes in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s: Curry, Marsh, Doerner and Maroger," Journal of the American Institute for Conservation, vol. 41, no. 1, article 3 (pp. 21-42). We thank Jonathan Sherman, of Sherman Art Conservation, for calling this article to our attention. C
