Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932)

by Neal Auction Company

May 8, 2016, 11:00 AM CST

New Orleans, LA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932), "View of the Lake with Dock and Row Boat", 1889, oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated "Aug. 31 1889" lower left, 13 1/2 in. x 10 in., framed. Note: As the son of a well-known sculptor, Walter Launt Palmer was exposed to the arts from a young age. Among his father’s circle of friends was Frederic Church (1826-1900), one of the leading American landscape painters of the day, who took the young Palmer as a pupil. Under Church’s tutelage, Palmer gained a keen understanding of the richness and beauty of nature and how to capture its splendor in oil and watercolor. A native of the Catskills area, Palmer would have been familiar with the breathtaking views of mountains, forests, and waterways that lured urban dwellers as an escape from New York City. In the work offered here, the tranquil colors reflect Palmer’s strengths, which an 1884 art critic best summarized as a “delicate feeling, independent study, and love of nature.” Palmer’s popularity among critics and arts patrons allowed him entry into many of the leading arts institutions, including the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, and Salmagundi Club as well as inclusion in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Ref.: Myers, Kenneth. The Catskills: Painters, Writers, and Tourists in the Mountains, 1820-1895. Yonkers, N.Y.: Hudson River Museum, 1988.

ARTHUR TWIDLE (BRITISH, 1865-1935)

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 10, 2016, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £2,000 - £3,000

Description: ARTHUR TWIDLE (BRITISH, 1865-1935), Britannia Needs No Bulwarks, Oil on canvas, Signed and dated 'Arthur Twidle 1912' (lower right) and inscribed with artist's titles and provenance to 1913 RA exhibition, 21 x 29in. (53.5 x 74cm.) Contained in original frame, Provenance: Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, 1913, item number 323; David Cross Gallery, Clifton c.1975 to Private Collector., Painted just two years before the outbreak of the Great War, the artist seems to be anticipating the struggles ahead with a seated Nelson contemplating tactics, presumably before the Battle of Trafalgar, and whose greatness of character embodies the finest virtues of England's most brilliant heroes throughout history: in the foreground King Arthur representing a strong and united nation; Sir Francis Drake who, against the odds beat the mighty Spanish Armada; and Cromwell whose famed organisational ability and rule of law was closely reflected by Nelson. In short, with so many virtues crowded into one man, Britain was invincible at sea in 1805 and remained so over a century later - a notion that was still very much reflected by - and throughout - the Royal Navy of 1912 which until recently had considered itself beyond the challenge of any two naval powers combined.

In storage at the National Art Museum, it is a later rendition of her teacher Giovanni Dupre's sculpture on the same subject. Pandiani Maraini's Sappho was exhibited at the Third World Fair in Paris in 1878 at the same time the Statue of Liberty's head was being unveiled in America. It was one of the most admired pieces at the Fair. Displayed in the Salone Italiana, the stunning, albeit small, marble statue was named after Plato's _tenth muse,' a Greek lyrical poet who, according to legend, inspired Athenian historian, Solon, to be taught one of her songs, so he could _learn it and die.' Her wide acclaim was not a surprise as her father, uncle and cousin all carved professionally-a family tree sculpted in stone! HERBERT JAMES GUNN, (1893 - 1964, British), RECLINING NUDE, oil on canvas on board

by Deutscher and Hackett

May 4, 2016, 7:00 PM AEST

South Yarra, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD30,000 - AUD40,000

Description: HERBERT JAMES GUNN, (1893 - 1964, British), RECLINING NUDE, oil on canvas on board SIGNED: signed upper left: H James Gunn DIMENSIONS: 34.0 x 44.5 cm PROVENANCE: Paisnel Gallery, London Private collection, Tasmania ESSAY:Herbert Gunn was born in Glasgow in 1893 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art followed by the Edinburgh College of Art. After his studies in Edinburgh he enrolled at the Academie Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris from 1911 – 1914. He left Paris at the outbreak of war, received a commission in the 10th Scottish Rifles and saw active service in France. Following the war, in England he established himself as a leading painter of landscapes and portraits, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1923 as well as the Fine Art Society and the Royal Scottish Academy. From 1926 he decided to devote himself entirely to portraiture. This more intimate nude subject from the 1930s, most likely depicts his second wife Pauline, with pale skin starkly rendered in crisp clear outline against the expanse of an embroidered red fabric.By 1953 Gunn’s reputation as a leading portrait painter was confirmed with the commission to paint the official Coronation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (Royal Collection Trust, Windsor Castle) Gunn was knighted in 1963 for his services to the arts. The retrospective exhibition Sir James Gunn: 1893-1964 was held at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, 3 December 1994 – 26 February 1995.

AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING FIGUREHEAD FROM THE ROYAL DANISH NAVY CORVETTE H.D.M.S. NAJADEN, 1820

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 10, 2016, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10,000 - £15,000

Description: AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING FIGUREHEAD FROM THE ROYAL DANISH NAVY CORVETTE H.D.M.S. NAJADEN, 1820, carved from a solid piece of stained pine in the form of a three-quarter length depiction of Ceres holding a cornucopia in her right hand and wearing a diadem over flowing locks of hair, terminating in a foliate and scrolled slotted foot -- 72in. (183cm.) high, Launched at Nyholm dockyard in May 1820 and classified as a Fifth Rate of 20-guns, this was the third vessel to carry this name - her immediate predecessor (a 36-gun frigate) of 1811 having been sunk in 1812 at the Battle of Lyng?r by the British Royal Navy. Quickly fitted out, she embarked that September for the first of three expeditions to the West Indies before finally returning in 1826. Used thereafter as a cadet training ship, she became a guard ship in 1844 which, apart from a short stint in active service during a national emergency in 1848, was a r?le she remained in until 1851 when decommissioned and sold. It seems probable that the Navy removed her decorative scheme before selling the ship to the merchants H. Puggaard & Co. and she made several more trips to the West Indies. It is believed she caught fire when transporting gold diggers to Alaska and became a total loss sometime in the 1850s, The choice of Ceres is appropriate for a vessel used for voyages to the West Indies. The goddess of agriculture, she is associated with plenty and is usually depicted wearing a crown of corn and carrying a sheath of corn or cornucopia as here. In mythology, her daughter, Proserpine was abducted by Pluto causing Ceres to travel everywhere in search of her, during which time crops wouldn't grow.

Description: A FINE BUILDER'S MIRROR-BACKED HALF MODEL FOR THE TANKER S.S. LUMINA, BUILT BY SIR JAMES LAING & SONS, LTD, FOR THE LUMINA SS CO., 1915, the laminated and carved hull finished in pink and black with lowered companionway, white lined decks and superstructure with gold-plated and painted metal fittings as appropriate, two covered boats rigged in davits, cut-away funnel and masts, mounted on a finely-preserved front-silvered mirror with angled bow and stern mirrors within original glazed wooden case with ivorine builder's plate.
