Norah McGuinness HRHA (1901 - 1980)PerugiaOil on board, 56 x 76cm (22 x 30)

by Adam's

May 27, 2015, 6:00 PM BST

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €8,000 - €12,000

Description: Norah McGuinness HRHA (1901 - 1980)PerugiaOil on board, 56 x 76cm (22 x 30)SignedExhibited: Biennale Internazionale d‰ÛªArte di Venezia, Venice 1950, Catalogue No.64.Norah McGuinness Exhibition, The Leicester Galleries, London, June 1951, Catalogue No.13.In 1948, the Venice Biennale resumed after the Second World War, the twenty-fourth Biennale in 53 years. However it was the following Biennale, of 1950, that would be significant in an Irish cultural and art historical context. In Room 50 of the central Italian Pavilion, Ireland was represented for the first time in the Biennale‰Ûªs history. What is most fascinating about this Irish Pavilion is that as a country newly emerged from the Commonwealth, one which had been presented with a moment of opportunity to define the national, cultural and political identity of its newly independent state; Ireland chose to be represented exclusively by women artists. In a delegation of 850 artists from 24 countries, Ireland was unique in this aspect, although other countries did include women amongst their delegations. The two Irish women who were chosen to represent the country had of course, already been hugely instrumental in the development of modernism in Ireland. Norah McGuinness and Nano Reid, contemporaries in age, artistic training and back ground (neither had the privilege or financial backing of an Anglo-Irish family as artists such as Hone and Jellett did); they had each significantly influenced the evolution of the modernist landscape in Ireland, in spite of differences in their artistic styles. Each artist submitted twelve works, McGuinness including only works which, according to Fiona Barber‰Ûªs account of the Biennale, ‰ÛÏExcavating Room 50‰Û, were completed in 1940. McGuinness had by this time, returned to Ireland as War plagued mainland Europe. Previously she had spent a period living in New York after her marriage to poet Geoffrey Phibs ended in 1931. Here she supported herself as a window dresser out of her Greenwich Village studio. As a woman living at a time when women‰Ûªs roles within society were increasingly domestic, she was almost unique in her entrepreneurial abilities and independence. After returning to Ireland at the onset of the War, McGuinness became involved in the instigation of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art (IELA), the first significant recognised alternative to the power of the more traditional and conservative Royal Hibernian Academy. After the death of artist Mainie Jellett in 1944, McGuinness took over the chair of the IELA, holding the role for almost twenty years. Her city life is reflected in the subject matter of her work which during this period was dominated by urban scenes. Of her twelve works included in the Biennale, at least two include scenes of the River Liffey running through Dublin‰Ûªs industrialised city centre, while others, such as Promenade and Perugia, hint at a more European city landscape. The softer tones of the palettes used in these works suggest a warmer climate. McGuinness‰Ûªs engagement with the bright jewel-like colours in Perugia entice the eye; and yet, the dark outlines of the figures on the balcony suggest something sinister is at play. The dark figure lurking to the left of the foreground overlooking the town threatens the sunny scene below; yet this is contradicted by the pleasant naivety and innocence of both the pair who converse in the opposite corner of the foreground and the presence of the child to the centre. One could draw many parallels from the body language of these characters with McGuinness‰Ûªs own personal life and experiences as an independent divorcee. What is intriguing about Ireland‰Ûªs participation in the 1950 Biennale is that there is almost no record of the event. Although one might imagine the event to have been hugely significant both in terms of the development of Irish modernism in the international spectrum and as a highlight in the careers of both artists, there is little or no mention

Wilson, Woodrow

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $300 - $500

Description: Wilson, Woodrow. Typed letter signed as President, 1 page, on White House stationery, 8 x 7 in., Washington, Mar. 8, 1918. To Postmaster General Albert S. Burleson (1863-1937), who is considered one of the worst Postmasters in the history of that office. With the approbation of Wilson and with cabinet support, Burleson instituted racial discrimination in hiring and racial segregation in the US Post Office. Wilson not only approved the policy but applied it to other federal agencies. Wilson writes, "This little memorandum has rather impressed me. Do you not think such an order as is suggested would be wise?" We don't know what order Burleson had suggested, but from June 1918 until July 1919, the Post Office Department operated the nation's telephone and telegraph services, an arrangement Burleson had sought for his entire time in office. Light soiling; a horizontal fold runs through the signature. With a 10 x 8 in. photo of Wilson arriving home from the Versailles Peace Conference on July 9, 1919. Estimated Value $300 - 500

CYPRIÁN MAJERNÍK (1909-1945) DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA

by Arthouse Hejtmánek

May 28, 2015, 4:00 PM CET

16000 Prague 6, Czech Republic

Description: CYPRIÁN MAJERNÍK (1909-1945) DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA Slovakia, 1944 Majerník is a major figure in Slovak modern painting. He studied at the Prague Academy under Professors Josef Loukota and Jakub Obrovský. He belonged to "Generace 1909", a group whose members focused on social and national issues. He spent a short time in Paris in the early 1930s. After graduating from the Academy, he remained in Prague permanently. Majerník's work was heavily influenced by the rise of Nazism and his own ordeal with multiple sclerosis. Don Quixote is a classic symbol of the futile fight the artist was waging in his personal life and in society, and this theme comes up again and again in his later work. Tempera and gouache on paper, signed and dated bottom left: Majerník 44. Exhibition labels on back.

§LARIONOV, MIKHAIL (1881-1964), Still Life with Cornflowers

by MacDougall Arts Ltd

June 3, 2015, 10:30 AM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £200,000 - £300,000

Description: §LARIONOV, MIKHAIL (1881-1964), Still Life with Cornflowers, signed with initials. Oil on canvas, 67 by 52 cm. Executed in the 1930s–1940s. Provenance: A gift from the artist to Irina Grzhebina, a ballet dancer and director of the company Russian Ballet of Irina Grzhebina, Paris, 1940s. A gift from the above to A. Kovalsky, a Soviet diplomat, Paris, 1986. A gift from the above to the present owner, Moscow, 2007. Private collection, Austria. Authenticity certificate from the expert G. Pospelov. Still Life with Cornflowers is indisputably the work of Mikhail Larionov. It belongs to his late period, of the 1930s–40s. In these years, the artist often painted unassuming wild flowers arranged in simple pots, even old teapots. The State Tretyakov Gallery has one such painting of a bunch of fresh, if not exactly decorative, white flowers standing in a blue teapot (Spring Bouquet). In the picture offered here for auction, blue flowers stand in a white teapot, and against which, the blue flowers resemble a pattern on the white china. A special feature of these creations is the artist’s ability to delight in the life of nature, the fleeting freshness of the flowers and the simultaneous awareness of how ephemeral life is: one of the poppies, an intruder in the bunch of cornflowers, still glows red among the blooms of blue, whilst another has already fallen on to the table top. In this work, as well as in the work mentioned above, the flowers are seen against the austere background of a grey wall. The picture in the State Tretyakov Gallery includes a spring sky seen through a window in its upper left-hand corner, this is absent in Still Life with Cornflowers but in its place there is an angular dark grey shape, apparently the edge of a picture hanging on the wall. Larionov’s canvasses from the first two decades of the 20th century have a great diversity of hue, but the palette that predominates his late work reached a point of refinement where the ranges of colour are restrained. In many still lifes (such as Still Life with Lemon in the collection of the State Russian Museum) and in his nudes (Life Model in a private collection in Moscow) the colours are subdued and misty, and when light blue or red inclusions appear (as in our picture), they seem to come as “an unexpected gift”. The “ashen” colours in his palette are developed by Larionov with remarkable delicacy. Moreover, the entire background of the white teapot and cornflowers consist of exquisite combinations of grey and blue tones. Our perception falls somewhere between sensations of these lively glimmer to their gloomy extinction (in the same way as the flowers themselves live a short while from the moment they are picked to the time when they inevitably wither away). The picture has a strong provenance. In its time it was (together with other works) presented as a gift from Larionov to the ballerina Irina Grzhebina, and from her, passed to the present owners in 1986. The painting is in a satisfactory state of preservation. Now that Larionov’s late work is available for research (along with his early work), we would add that we have a fuller picture of his creativity, offering the opportunity for its development to be traced from beginning to completion. Dr Gleb Pospelov, art historian
