Explains James Christensen. ?at One Point She Sings, 'in A Boat That?s Built Of Sticks And Hay, We Drifted From The Shore . . . .' It Occurred To Me That A New Marriage Is Like A Tiny Nest Of Sticks And Twigs And On The River Of Life, Our Relationships Act Like A Boat That Holds Us Together As We Travel Along Its Meandering Path. Through Their Journey Together, This Newlywed Couple Will Build Stronger Supports Into Their Fledgling Nest Until It Will Be A Shelter Able To Withstand Even The Fiercest Of Storms. ?the Shoreline Of The River Is Bountiful With Signs That Good Fortune Will Accompany This Newlywed Couple Throughout Their Passage. Heart-shaped Bushes Populate The Undergrowth Along The River?s Edge. Lemons, A Universal Symbol Of Marital Happiness, Ripen Abundantly On A Tree. Next To It, The Oranges Signify That They Hope To Start A Family. The White Lilies Are An Indication Of Purity And Virtue And The Irises Represent Faith And Hope. Peace And Friendship In The Family Can Be Expected Since A Pair Of Swallows Blesses This Couple With Their Presence.? "the Nest" Is Not The First Time James Christensen Has Focused His Attention On The Joyous Institution Of Marriage. "the Bride" Was A Highly Popular Release That Sold Out Quickly Upon Its Release In 2005. "the Nest" Is Much More Than A Wonderful Wedding Or Housewarming Gift. It Is A Lasting Reminder For Any Couple Of The Faith Placed In Each Other In The Early Stage Of Their Life Together.

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $14,000

Description: Graphite on paperUSA, 1986Tom of Finland (1920-1991) – Finnish illustrator and artistSigned and dated lower right ‘Tom-86’Dimensions: 13 x 9 ½ in. (33 x 24.1 cm.)Frame dimensions: 19 x 16 in. (48.3 x 40.6 cm.)Very good conditionCalling into question the hetero-normative vision of the 20th and 21st centuries, Tom of Finland’s instantly recognizable drawings depict fearless portraits of homosexuality. Drawn from his own fantasies, his larger-than-life drawn phalluses and sexual acts create a dialogue between pleasure and pain, homo and heterosexuality, and culture and subculture. “Untitled (Locker Room)” deepens this conversation by depicting two very different men engaged in a fantasy. With exaggerated muscles and glistening skin, the viewer is welcomed into a world of open sexuality. A very full drawing with multiple figures such as this one are very collectible and have risen considerably market value in recent years. ExhibitedArtist’s Space, New York, “Tom of Finland: The Pleasure of Play,” June 14-August 23, 2015. ConditionIn overall good condition. Tom of Finland (Finnish, 1920-1991)Born Touko Laaksonen, Tom of Finland is best known for his stylized homoerotic fetish art which influenced 20th century gay culture. Interested in art from a young age, Laaksonen studied advertising in Helsinki in 1939. His fascination with the male physique led to his illustrations of homoerotic fantasies which his produced in secret. In 1956, Laaksonen sent his artwork to a popular American magazine, “Physique Pictorial”, which he signed Tom. His work ended up on the cover of the Spring 1957 issue, credited to “Tom of Finland.” Tom’s first solo American exhibition was held in 1978 in Los Angeles, which was followed by a series of exhibitions; Tom became an international gay celebrity. Over the course of his career, he produced roughly 3,500 illustrations. His work can be found in numerous public institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
