She became one of the most influential American abstract expressionist painters in the second half of the 20th century. On October 25, 1945, she married artist Jackson Pollock, who was also influential in the abstract expressionism movement. David Ben-Gurion large signed limited edition print

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: BEN-GURION, DAVID. (1886-1973). Polish-born Israeli statesman who, as his country's first prime minister, proclaimed its independence on May 14, 1948. Signed limited edition color print. ("D. Ben-Gurion"). N.p., N.d. (1973). Number 328 of 500. Broadly signed on the lower blank mount in pencil. Additionally signed by the American realist painter HERBERT L. DAVIDSON (b.1930). ("Herbert Davidson"). An early supporter of Zionism, Ben-Gurion moved to Palestine in 1906 to become a farmer. After his expulsion by the Turkish government at the outbreak of World War I, he rallied the support of Britain and the U.S. calling for increased Jewish immigration to Palestine. Decades of ongoing Zionist activities led to a strengthening of the Jewish community in Palestine and, on May 14, 1948, Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of the state of Israel. As prime minister and minister of defense, he created the Israeli army, often using military force to thwart Arab violence. He retired from politics in 1963 and several years later moved to the Negev kibbutz of Sde-Boqer. A vivid portrait of Ben-Gurion with the desert sky and billowing Israeli flag in the background. The original artwork, painted in the final year of Ben-Gurion's life, was donated to the Israel National Museum.

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 12, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £800 - £1,200

Description: A DIDACTIC SPIROMETER, CIRCA 1880 nickel-plated overall and designed as a single-cylinder mill engine with drive wheel, governor, oscillating arm and eccentric crank with crossed string drive to dial stamped 10-200 cubic inches supported from four-pillar frame, the whole mounted on a shaped ebonised base with air inlet -- 29¾ x 15½ x 10in. (75.5 x 39.5 x 25.5cm.); together with a contemporary framed broadside extolling the virtues of correct breathing without belts or corsets, as demonstrated by the spirometer, with substantial quotes from Lennox Browne (2) Lennox Browne (1841-1902) a specialist throat practitioner, co-founded the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital (now the Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital) in 1874. He enjoyed considerable success and gave lectures on correct breathing, speech and singing, and co-wrote Voice, Song and Speech with voice trainer Emil Behnke in 1883. Articles in The Times from 1883 and 1894 refer to Browne using a spirometer in his lectures and, whilst unproven, this example with its large visible dial, polished finish and animated engine would be ideal for such purposes. ++In good working order at the time of writing; the broadside yellowed with age and old marks and abrasions.

19th century, Irish Merchant Navy Green Ensign.

by Whyte's

May 9, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €300 - €500

Description: 19th century, Irish Merchant Navy Green Ensign. A scarce unofficial flag of Irish owned shipping. h:108  w:56 in. Other Notes: There is evidence that the Green Ensign, although never officially approved, had been used by some Irish ships since the 17th Century. The early versions use the emblem of the Irish Revenue – a 'Mermaid' Harp surmounted by a crown in gold. However the background should have been St. Patrick's Blue rather than emerald green according to the authorities. In the 1830s The Western Yacht Club used the Green Ensign for a while. In some cases Irish vessels had this flag confiscated by authorities in harbours in Britain, Ireland and the West Indies according to some records. In 1872, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in reply to the Admiralty, declared the use of the Green Ensign to be incorrect, and in support attached a well researched paper by Sir J. Barnard-Burke, Ulster King of Arms, supporting the choice of blue as the National Colour of Ireland. Thus the Harp is shown as gold on blue in the Royal Standard, and indeed since the 1930s the same is the Standard of the President of the Republic of Ireland.

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $3,000

Description: [DISCOVERY VOYAGE.] A sterling silver salver signed in facsimile by eight participants of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904, more commonly known as the Discovery Voyage. N.p., October 5, 1918. Presented as a wedding gift to Royal Navy officer CHARLES ROYDS (1876-1931), the Discovery's first lieutenant after whom Cape Royds in Antarctica is named. Our sterling silver salver with scalloped rope edge and four ball and claw feet is inscribed with the seal of the Discovery Voyage depicting icebergs and a penguin encircled within a heraldic belt. Below the seal is the engraved inscription "To Captain C.W. Royds R.N. on his marriage October 5th 1918 from his old messmates in the 'Discovery' 1901-1904." Surrounding the inscription are the engraved signatures of: MICHAEL BARNE (1877-1961; "Michael Barne"). Barne's responsibilities as a member of Scott's Discovery expedition was to keep records of the voyage. A recipient of the Polar Medal, Barne "had been a shipmate of Scott on the Majestic... [and] was appointed second officer by the committee in June 1900. His duties including assisting Armitage with magnetic studies and taking charge of deep-sea temperature research," (Pilgrims on the Ice: Robert Falcon Scott's first Antarctic Expedition, Baughman). An Antarctic cape, glacier and inlet are named after him. GEORGE FRANCIS ARTHUR MULOCK (1882-1963; "George F.A. Mulock"). Mulock had joined the relief vessel Morning that resupplied Scott's ships in the Antarctic. In 1902, he came aboard the Discovery to replace Ernest Shackleton who had fallen ill. Mulock served as a surveyor and cartographer during the mission, publishing his results as Survey Work of the National Antarctic, 1901-04, for which he was awarded the Polar Medal. He had a distinguished career in both World War I and II, during which time he was held captive by the Japanese. The Mulock Inlet and Glacier are named in his honor. Marine biologist THOMAS VERE HODGSON (1864-1926; "T.V. Hodgson") did pioneering work aboard the Discovery and was the first person to describe the Antarctic's deep sea floor. Prior to joining the Discovery, he had been a member of Carsten Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition (1898-1901). Cape Hodgson in the Ross Archipelago is named after him. LOUIS BERNACCHI (1876-1942; "L. C. Bernacchi") was a Tasmanian physicist and astronomer of Italian extraction. His first polar journey was with Carsten Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition (1898-1901), along with Hodgson (above). For his work on the Discovery voyage, Bernacchi was decorated by the Royal Geographical Society and awarded the Légion d'Honneur. Scott was the best man at his wedding. Bernacchi explored regions of Africa and South America, wrote several books on the Antarctic, was a member of the Royal Geographic Society, and served in the British and United States military during World War I. His attempts to raise funds for a 1925 Antarctic expedition failed. Antarctica's Bernacchi Head and Bay honor his name. Royal Navy officer REGINALD W. SKELTON (1872-1956; "Reginald W. Skelton") was the Discovery's chief engineer and official photographer. Despite the longstanding friendship between Scott and Skelton, he was passed over as second-in-command on Scott's fatal 1910 Terra Nova expedition. An Antarctic inlet and three glaciers are named in his honor. CYRIL LONGHURST ("Cyril Longhurst") was the secretary of the Discovery expedition and served as best man at Shackleton's wedding. Mount Cyril in Antarctica is named after him. HARTLEY TRAVERS FERRAR (1879-1932; "H.T. Ferrar") was born in Ireland, raised in South Africa and educated as a geologist in England. A relatively young and inexperienced member of the voyage, Ferrar met the woman he would marry while the Discovery was docked in New Zealand. His expedition duties included making geological surveys, classifying what became known as the Ferrar or Beacon sandstone layer and discovering the first Antarctic fossils. He later conducted geological research in Egypt, Palestine and New Zealand. The Ferrar Glacier is named for him. Scottish Royal Navy captain ALBERT B. ARMITAGE (1864-1943; "Albert B. Armitage"), was the Discovery's second-in-command. "Armitage had been second in command of the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Spitsbergen. In recognition of this, he received the Murchison award from the R[oyal] G[eographical] S[ociety]. Armitage was the oldest man in the expedition, and his years of Arctic service gave him more such experience than anyone else on the Discovery except Koettlitz... The contrasts between Armitage and Scott were noteworthy. Armitage had a good deal of experience with ships under sail; Scott did not. Armitage had three years of polar work; Scott had none," (Scott of the Antarctic, Huxley). Cape Armitage, the southernmost point on Ross Island, is named in his honor. The Discovery voyage was the first led by Scott and was arranged by the Joint Antarctic Committee composed of members from the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. Known as the British National Antarctic Expedition, its achievements included the discovery of the polar plateau and Scott's ascent, the first ever, in a hot air balloon over Antarctica. Scott returned to Antarctica a second time aboard the Terra Nova. That expedition, which commenced in 1910, developed into a race against the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen to become the first to reach the South Pole. Amundsen attained the goal on January 4, 1912, beating Scott by two weeks. Scott's expedition ended tragically when he and four companions perished on their return march from the South Pole after failing to reach a supply depot. Following the Discovery expedition, Royds continued his career in the Royal Navy. While commanding the battleship HMS Emperor of India, he was given our lovely sterling silver platter to honor his marriage to Mary Louisa Blane, a widow and retired actress. After the war, Royds was an instructor at the Admiralty, retiring from the navy as a rear-admiral. Thereafter, he enjoyed a second career as deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police for which he received a knighthood. The back of the salver bears the hallmarks of "Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company 112 Regent Street W" and is etched with the numbers 97079 and 24090. The company's hallmark "G&S. Co. Ltd." is engraved in a trefoil alongside a heraldic lion, the head of an animal and the letter "B." Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company was a large firm comprised of jewelers and silversmiths established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. It started as Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company in 1898 and became part of Garrard & Co., Ltd. in 1952. A unique object. Professionally polished and in fine condition save for a few very faint scuffs.

Chinese silver coin Sun Yat-Sen Junk boat Dollar, 1933

by Eternity Gallery

May 12, 2015, 1:00 AM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $1,000

Description: Chinese silver coin Sun Yat-Sen Junk boat Dollar, 1933 Republic of China; Diameter: 39 mm; Weight: 26.61 g; Condition: About UNC; Sun Yat-sen; 12 November 1866 12 March 1925)[1][2] was a Chinese revolutionary, first president and founding father of the Republic of China (191249), and medical practitioner. As the foremost pioneer of the Republic of China, Sun is referred to as the "Father of the Nation" in the Republic of China (ROC), and the "forerunner of democratic revolution" in the People's Republic of China. Sun played an instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty during the years leading up to the Double Ten Revolution. He was appointed to serve as Provisional President of the Republic of China, when it was founded in 1912. He later co-founded the Kuomintang (KMT), serving as its first leader.[3] Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and remains unique among 20th-century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Although Sun is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China, his political life was one of constant struggle and frequent exile. After the success of the revolution, he quickly resigned, due to Beiyang Clique pressure, from his post as President of the newly founded Republic of China, and led successive revolutionary governments as a challenge to the warlords who controlled much of the nation. Sun did not live to see his party consolidate its power over the country during the Northern Expedition. His party, which formed a fragile alliance with the Communists, split into two factions after his death. Sun's chief legacy resides in his developing of the political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood.[4]
