Walt Kuhn ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate

by East Coast Books

September 12, 2015, 7:00 PM EST

Wells, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is "MORNING". Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 4 x 6 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market, as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was indicated that there was only from 1 to 6 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn collector.Difficult to get a good scan of copper plates.Picture of Kuhn does NOT come with this plate.

TSUBA WITH WATERWHEELS

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

September 12, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €500 - €750

Description: Iron. Japan, 18th – 19th cent.Of rectangular form with strongly rounded edges, no hitsu, with rounded and slightly protruding rim. The depiction shows two slightly overlapping mizuguruma (waterwheels), one in a relief and the other openwork. In particular, the waterwheel is symbolic and resembles the sun, the circle of life or the Buddhist wheel of teachings. Almost two-thirds of the surface with an even ground bearing a very delicate relief suggesting the water stream.HEIGHT 8,15 CMFrom the collection of Dr. Karl Florenz (1865-1939)Dr. Karl Florenz was a renowned scholar, university professor and considered a pioneer of German Japanese studies. He resided in Japan from 1888 until the beginning of the First World War and then continued his lectures at the Hamburg Colonial Institute, never returning to Japan again. Famed for having translated several important Japanese books including the Nihongi, Japan’s oldest official history text, he was awarded the Japanese doctor title in literature. His extensive collection was largely destroyed by air strikes in the Second World War (which he himself did not live to witness), however, most tsuba etc. survived in relatively good condition. Dr. Florenz primarily collected tsubas dating to the 18th cent. and quite evidently made an effort to explore a wide range of motifs.

Description: Shibuichi. Japan, 19th cent. Two figures depicted in katakiri- and kebori- engraving. The lucky god Ebisu is shown in the front, holding a peach, symbol of long life – not one of his common attributes. He seems very joyful and was probably handed it by the lady standing behind him, who is presumably the goddess Seiobo (Xi Wangmu in China). These special peaches only grow in her gardens in the Kunlun Mountains. Strong uchu engraving on the back, also the signature YASU-CHIKA.LENGTH 9,5 CMFrom the collection of Dr. Karl Florenz (1865-1939) Dr. Karl Florenz was a renowned scholar, university professor and considered a pioneer of German Japanese studies. Late Production Colt Pre-Woodsman Semi-Automatic Target Pistol with Rare N-S Patent Combination Holster Stock

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: Late Production Colt Pre-Woodsman Semi-Automatic Target Pistol with Rare N-S Patent Combination Holster Stock Manufactured in 1927, the last year before "THE WOODSMAN" was added as the official model name of the pistol. Features an elevation adjustable beaded blade front and windage adjustable rear notch sights. The two-line address and patent markings is on top of the barrel and the standard Pre-Woodsman caliber markings on the left side of the slide. It has a small checkered oval on the back strap indicating use with low velocity ammunition and checkered walnut grips. The pistol includes an N-S patented National Lead Company combination shoulder stock and holster for 22 caliber Colt automatic pistols (Woodsman). The shoulder stock is metal covered with smooth brown leather with a metal grip fitting for the pistol. Marked with "N-S"/patent date/location in a rope circle. These were marketed in the late 1920s and early 1930s specifically for the Woodsman line but due to the 1934 National Firearms Act, short barreled rifles and pistols with shoulder stocks were banned, making this a very hard to find item especially in such a well preserved state. The stock holster is listed in conjunction specifically with Colt Woodsman pistols manufactured between 1915 and 1943 as a curio & relic. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Woodsman BBL: 6 5/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 22 LR Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 51812 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent overall with 90% plus original blue finish, some edge wear near the muzzle, scattered light nicks, very light spotting in the grip straps and some very light dings at the rear of the slide. Grips are excellent with well defined checkering and minimal light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The holster stock combination is excellent with some light to moderate rub marks on the edges, tight stitching, light edge wear on the bracket and some verdigris on the rivets in the back.

Poster – Seamanship Training Group

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

September 8, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: "Idishe jugent, der yam ruft dikh!" [Jewish youth, the sea calls you!], poster issued by Noham (No'ar Chlutzi Meuchad) in Germany, calling to join the seamanship training group "Kovshei HaYam" [Hebrew: Conquerors of the Sea] in the Deggendorf DP camp, near Munich. Printed by F. Bruckmann KG, Munich, [1947]. Yiddish. A poster announcing the opening of a new training course of "Kovshei HaYam" seamanship training group in the Deggendorf DPC, calling young boys and girls, 17-24 years of age, with a minimum of five years school education and a certificate declaring that they are in good health, to turn to the representatives of the Jewish Agency in the camp, or to Noham organization representatives or to the director of “Kovshei HaYam”, Shlomo Steindel, and enroll in the training program of sailors, fishermen and seamen. The importance of seamanship training for “She’erit HaPletah” is emphasized: “if Jews want to be independent in Eretz Israel, they must regain all of the Jewish lands and seas, and become again a nation of farmers, fishermen and sailors…” (Yiddish). After World War II, approximately 2000 refugees occupied Deggendorg DP camp, most of them from Theresienstadt, on their way to Eretz Israel. A lively cultural activity took place in the camp with two newspapers, a theater group, synagogue, Mikveh and a Kosher kitchen. The camp administration even issued its own paper currency. 42X61 cm. Good-fair condition. Folding marks. Restored tears (slight paint restorations). Linen-backed for display and preservation. From the collection of Dr Simon Cohen.

by Lempertz

September 23, 2015, 2:30 PM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €8,000 - €9,000

Description: Signed lower right: Henriette Browne'Henriette Browne' was the pseudonym of Sophie de Bouteiller, a Paris born painter and engraver, who was married with the diplomat Henry Jules de Saux. After learning to paint under Penn and Chaplin, the artist turned to portrait and genre painting, concentrating mainly on scenes of families and children, and later oriental motifs. Her works were exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853 and later at the Royal Academy from 1871-79. Thieme-Becker mention that this piece was presented to the salon in 1853.Browne's oeuvre is characterised by her interest in everyday life and the accurate portrayal of reality - qualities typical of the French realist movement emerging in the 1840s.
