CmWeight of weighable silver: c. 6400 gVery good conditionExtensive, very well preserved English toilet set from the 1st half of the 20th century; witness of the high craftsmanship of English silversmithsEstimate by Auctionata Expert: 13,000 EuroToilet sets like these were very popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were often given by wealthy gentlemen to their brides as wedding presents – mostly they comprised up to 30 components, including boxes for gloves and jewelry, flacons for perfume, ointments and powders, but also other important things like pin cushions, mirrors and brushes. Society ladies frequently received visitors in their dressing rooms, where the accessories were presented to demonstrate good taste and social status. Offered set stands out especially due to its multipartiteness and fine Chinoiseries, which were especially popular in Europe since the mid-17th century. The filigree ornate designs based on ornaments and architecture from the Far East, particularly from China, adorn the objects and provide the English toilet set with a special charm. The design is based on an assembled set, which was produced from 1673 to 1682 in London and can be seen today in the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts.Condition:The toilet set is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The brushes have partially been preserved. The glass inserts of some jars and flacons are a later addition. Walt Kuhn ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate

by East Coast Books

September 12, 2015, 7:00 PM EST

Wells, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is "MORNING". Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 4 x 6 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market, as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was indicated that there was only from 1 to 6 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn collector.Difficult to get a good scan of copper plates.Picture of Kuhn does NOT come with this plate.

TSUBA WITH WATERWHEELS

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

September 12, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €500 - €750

Description: Iron. Japan, 18th – 19th cent.Of rectangular form with strongly rounded edges, no hitsu, with rounded and slightly protruding rim. The depiction shows two slightly overlapping mizuguruma (waterwheels), one in a relief and the other openwork. In particular, the waterwheel is symbolic and resembles the sun, the circle of life or the Buddhist wheel of teachings. Almost two-thirds of the surface with an even ground bearing a very delicate relief suggesting the water stream.HEIGHT 8,15 CMFrom the collection of Dr. Karl Florenz (1865-1939)Dr. Karl Florenz was a renowned scholar, university professor and considered a pioneer of German Japanese studies. He resided in Japan from 1888 until the beginning of the First World War and then continued his lectures at the Hamburg Colonial Institute, never returning to Japan again. Famed for having translated several important Japanese books including the Nihongi, Japan’s oldest official history text, he was awarded the Japanese doctor title in literature. His extensive collection was largely destroyed by air strikes in the Second World War (which he himself did not live to witness), however, most tsuba etc. survived in relatively good condition. Dr. Florenz primarily collected tsubas dating to the 18th cent. and quite evidently made an effort to explore a wide range of motifs.

These special peaches only grow in her gardens in the Kunlun Mountains. Christian Berentz (1658-1722), Pair of Still Lifes, Oil, 17th C

by Auctionata AG

September 23, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €40,000 - €52,000

Description: Oil on canvas, relined Germany, 2nd half of the 17th century Christian Berentz (1658-1722) - German still life painter of the Baroque The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, dated October 10, 2014 Dimensions: 87 x 125 cm each Hand-painted Baroque frame: 96 x 135 cm each Good condition A pair of rich and finely executed fruit and flower still lifes, animated by a number of birds and a parrot carrying a clove in his beak Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 80,000 EuroChristian Berentz was specialized in the depiction of crystal objects, glasses, fruits, flowers and other serving objects. His mature works are especially impressive examples, where Nordic influences in terms of meticulously rendered details are masterfully combined with the baroque approach to a certain compositional richness. The here presented bouquets of flowers are therefore presented with a keen, almost glaring accuracy, while the slightly wormy surface of the apples and peaches in the bowls reveal the artist’s tendency towards his analytical vision. With this, Berentz followed the Roman taste that had previously been introduced by Abraham Brueghel (1631-1690). A comparable signed painting of a vase (‘Vaso di Fiori’) can be found in the Galleria Pallavicini, whose Marchese had accommodated Christian Berentz since 1690. The artist’s typical baroque use of prestigious effects is also found in the large signed composition dated 1696, which is now in the Museum of Capodimonte in Neaples. Condition: The paintings are in good condition according to age. The paint surfaces are somewhat darkened, craqueled and stained. The canvases have been relined. The inspection under UV light reveals several minor and major touch-ups throughout the depictions. The frames have been restored and show slight signs of use. The size of the paintings are 87 x 125 cm, while the frame measure 96 x 135 cm.Christian Berentz (1658-1722) Christian Berentz (1658-1722) was a student of Hermann Kamphusen (1667-1673) and Georg Hainz (1673-1677), who trained him as a professional still life and flower painter. From 1677 to 1679, he traveled through the Netherlands. In 1679 he went to Venice and then to Rome, where he remained until 1722. Other sources state that he would have been a teacher of Pietro Navarra and have worked in the studio of Carlo Maratta. Berentz is especially recorded for his still lifes in the manner of Pieter Claesz, Maximilian Pfeiler and Willem Kalf, among others. Around 1700, he lived in the house of the Marquis Pallavicini in Rome. Works by Christian Berentz are today preserved, for instance, at the Museum Capodimonte in Neaples and at the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Description: Signed lower right: Henriette Browne'Henriette Browne' was the pseudonym of Sophie de Bouteiller, a Paris born painter and engraver, who was married with the diplomat Henry Jules de Saux. Her works were exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853 and later at the Royal Academy from 1871-79. Thieme-Becker mention that this piece was presented to the salon in 1853.Browne's oeuvre is characterised by her interest in everyday life and the accurate portrayal of reality - qualities typical of the French realist movement emerging in the 1840s.
