Beatrice Salkeld (1925-1993) Boy with Dog Oil on canvas, 42 x 32 (16½ x 12½

Lot 14: Beatrice Salkeld (1925-1993) Boy with Dog Oil on canvas, 42 x 32 (16½ x 12½

by Adam's

April 1, 2015, 6:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €500 - €800

Description: Beatrice Salkeld (1925-1993) Boy with Dog Oil on canvas, 42 x 32 (16½ x 12½'') Signed 'I soon realised I was to play a minor role in this American carnival; it was a role I was accustomed to in other countries, so I did not complain. No one could accuse me of trying to compete with my husband, he alone was news whether drunk or sober.' Beatrice Salkeld was first introduced to her future husband Brendan Behan (1923-1964) by her artist father, Cecil fFrench Salkeld ARHA (1904-1969), while she was still a school girl. Educated at the Loreto Convent on St. Stephen's Green in Dublin, she trained at the National College of Art and later in Florence, Sienna, and Milan. From 1949 to 1955, she worked as a botanical assistant in the National Museum of Ireland. At this time, she exhibited at the RHA (1948-1950); had her work shown at the Oireachtas Exhibition (1957, 1958), at the Irish Living Art Exhibition (1959), in New York (1969, 1970) and at the Irish Pavilion at the World Fair (1972). She also assisted her father with painting his murals in Davy Byrne's public house in Dublin, and subsequently maintained them. After marrying Behan in February 1955, Salkeld remained to a great extent, in her husband's shadow. She helped to support him and their only daughter by working as a horticultural illustrator for the Irish Times. Regarding him as 'a great, loveable genius', she also travelled frequently with Behan, accompanying him to London, Paris, and New York, and was very tolerant of her husband's drinking and unruly behaviour. She illustrated Behan's Hold your hour and have another (1963), and worked with Alan Simpson on the revision of his unfinished play 'Richard's cork leg'. Upon his death, she settled his many debts and in 1973, published her memoirs, My Life with Brendan.

HENRY MERVIN SHRADY (American, 1871-1922) Bull Moose, c

Lot 77025: HENRY MERVIN SHRADY (American, 1871-1922) Bull Moose, c

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: HENRY MERVIN SHRADY (American, 1871-1922) Bull Moose, circa 1900 Bronze with brown patina 20-1/4 inches (51.4 cm) high Inscribed along base: H.M. SHRADY / Roman Bronze Works N.Y. / Copyright by / T.B. Starr PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF JUDSON C. AND NANCY SUE BALL LITERATURE: T. Tolles, ed., American Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume II: A Catalogue of Works by Artists Born Between 1865 and 1885, New York, 2001, pp. 544-45, no. 243, another example illustrated. Strange that so few ever come to the woods to see how the pine lives and grows and spires, lifting its evergreen arms to the light, - to see its perfect success; but most are content to behold it in the shape of many broad boards brought to market, and deem that its true success! . . . Every creature is better alive than dead, men and moose and pine-trees, and he who understands it aright will rather preserve its life than destroy it (Henry David Thoreau, The Maine Woods, 1864). By the 1870s, only several years after Henry David Thoreau made this eloquent plea for the preservation of the New England woods, the moose population between New York and Maine had dwindled to near extinction. During the seventeenth through early nineteenth centuries, the northeastern moose had provided Native Americans with meat and leather for moccasins and decorative objects. Yet due to over-hunting and deforestation in this region, the moose had become little more than a mythical symbol of the virgin wilderness. The native New Yorker Henry Shrady was certainly aware of ideological power of the moose, in its association with the growing U.S. conservation movement, when he sculpted Bull Moose in 1900. Essentially self-taught as an artist, Shrady had studied law at Columbia University and, on the side, learned animal anatomy in biology classes and on sketching trips to the Zoological Gardens in the Bronx Zoo. Even more remarkable, Bull Moose, with its adept rendering of musculature, fur, and facial features, was one of his very first sculptures, cast in the same year as Empty Saddle and Elk Buffalo. The New York jeweler Theodore B. Starr helped jumpstart Shrady's art career by selling these bronzes in his Fifth Avenue gallery. Bull Moose and Elk Buffalo soon attracted the attention of Karl Bitter, the director of sculpture for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, who hired Shrady to make enlarged plaster versions (9' and 8', respectively) for a bridge at the fairground. Shrady collaborated for six weeks with Bitter at his studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, and completed a total of eight monumental animal sculptures for the project. Shrady spent much of his short career executing large-scale military and equestrian statues, notably the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Nonetheless, his animal bronzes, particularly the lone and proud Bull Moose, remain his most popular and memorable works. Other casts of Bull Moose are featured in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, Louisiana. "According to [Metropolitan] Museum records, Riccardo Bertelli of the Roman Bronze Works viewed this sculpture on September 29, 1939, and said that 'not more than twenty examples of it had been cast'" (T. Tolles, ed., American Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume II: A Catalogue of Works by Artists Born Between 1865 and 1885, New York, 2001, p. 545).

HUGHIE LEE-SMITH (1915 - 1999) Figure by the Seashore II.

Lot 60: HUGHIE LEE-SMITH (1915 - 1999) Figure by the Seashore II.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 2, 2015, 2:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $60,000

Description: HUGHIE LEE-SMITH (1915 - 1999) Figure by the Seashore II. Oil on masonite board, 1957. 457x610 mm; 18x24 inches. Incised signature and date in oil, lower right recto. With a typed label with the title, on the verso. Provenance: the artist; Marshall P. Blankarn, Nutley, NJ; private collection (1986). Figure by the Seashore II is an excellent example of Hughie Lee-Smith's mid-career painting. It epitomizes his 1950s exploration of a modern, existential landscape inhabited by isolated figures. Lee-Smith displays his refined form of Surrealism with the enigmatic character of a woman in a red dress, who gazes out towards a distant shoreline. 1957 was an important year in both the development of the artist's oeuvre and his career. After winning the prestigious Emily Lowe award, Lee-Smith left Detroit for New York City where he signed on with Petite Gallery and later Janet Nassler Gallery. This painting is a second version of his well known Woman by the Seashore, 1957, in the collection of Grant Hill, and illustrated in the collection's catalogue Something All Our Own: The Grant Hill Collection of African-American Art, see pp. 168-9. Indeed, it is a very close copy by the artist, with subtle differences in the shadows, foreground and color palette, and was likely commissioned at the same time. Other well known works from this year are in important museum collections: Stranger the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC, Untitled (Rooftop View), the Cleveland Museum of Art and Desert Forms, the Art Institute of Chicago.
