Shona Stone

by Africa Direct

August 25, 2015, 1:00 AM MST

Denver, CO, USA

Estimated Price: $6,500 - $7,900

Description: Shona Stone Sculpture "Listening Man" A. Mamvura Provenance: Sandra Kerno Collection  Additional Information: Signed by Albert Mamvura (1945-1995), a First Generation Zimbabwe stone sculptor who worked in Chitungwiza. Until the middle of the 20th century, with the notable exception of the famous birds carved in steatite, there was very little sculpture of any kind in Zimbabwe. It was not until the 1950s that the stone sculpture movement was born, a movement which would change the face of contemporary African art. In 1957, Frank McEwen, an Englishman, and a teacher, collector and exhibitor of modern art, was appointed Director of the National Gallery of Rhodesia, in Salisbury (now Harare). Soon after taking the position, McEwen began to make connections with talented local artists whom he supported and mentored. He encouraged them to find creative inspiration in their traditional religions and spirituality. In addition to what was taking place at the National Gallery, a workshop was created in Vukutu in Nyanga district, headed by Joram Mariga, an agricultural engineer turned sculptor. Mariga was the uncle of John and Bernard Takawira, and he taught both his nephews and many other young men who would become the famous First Generation of Zimbabwe Stone culptors. Albert Nathan Mamvura was born in 1954, in the Buhera district of Zimbabwe. After leaving school, Mamvura worked as a carpenter in Chitungwiza before striking out to begin carving on his own, in 1977. A year later, Mamvura’s works were accepted by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe for its annual exhibition.  Since then Mamvura has been counted among the most talented of all Shona sculptors. His works focus on the human figure, with a tendency toward abstraction. "Listening Man"is made from green serpentine stone, Mamvura's favorite medium. As can be seen in this piece, Mamvura's works are usually figurative and depict human forms in serene or contemplative attitude, reflecting the Shona spirituality that Mamvura believed in. Shona RHINOCEROS Stone Butter Jade Zimbabwe Africa

by Africa Direct

August 25, 2015, 1:00 AM MST

Denver, CO, USA

Estimated Price: $450 - $500

Description: Signed by George Marondereyi 2007Additional Information: All Shona sculpture was made after 1965. Frank McEwan, an Englishman, who was director of the Rhodes National Gallerey in what was then Southern Rhodesia, began a school in 1956, and in 1965 encouraged the students, who had been painting, to move to stone. See Oliver Sultan's Life in Stone. I have a huge collection of Shona pieces in rapocco, green and black serpentine, leopard rock, and verdite--some are four feet tall! In our extensive time in Zimbabwe, we saw an enormous amount of wonderful sculpture. We did the largest amount of our buying from a wonderful co-op of about forty artists. My partner apprenticed with them, and learned to repair sculpture, which she has done for galleries, museums, and private collections. Instead of putting pieces in the fire, as they do in Zimbabwe, we use space heaters, hair dryers, and pots of boiling water. Recommended Reading: Joosten's SCULPTURES FROM ZIMBABWE

Condition Report: Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners.   Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use.  We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings.  Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. None

CLARENCE COLES PHILLIPS (1880-1927). LIGHT CONSUMES COAL. Circa 1918. 28x20 inches, 71x52 cm. Edwards & Deutsch Litho Co. Chicago.

by Swann Auction Galleries

August 5, 2015, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: CLARENCE COLES PHILLIPS (1880-1927) LIGHT CONSUMES COAL. Circa 1918. 28x20 1/2 inches, 71x52 cm. Edwards & Deutsch Litho Co. Chicago. Condtiion B+: losses in left corners; water staining in image and text; tears at edges; creases in margins and image. Paper. In what is perhaps the most "artistic" of the American World War I posters, Phillips unites the bold, direct elements of German object posters by artists such as Lucien Bernhard with the intricate swirls and patterns of American Art Nouveau in the style of William Bradley. Interestingly, while it may echo the work of European artists (specifically a 1907 image by Peter Behrens featuring a light bulb), the poster represents a drastic divergence from Phillips' usual style. He was nationally known for his "fadeaway girls," which graced the covers of LIFE magazine from 1908 onward. These images featured attractive young women whose clothing was the same color as the background, forcing the viewers to complete the image with their imagination. Rawls p. 20, Modern American 28, Darracott p. 36, Theofiles 79.

Description: DESIGNER UNKNOWN VICTORY FOR THE AMERICAN WAY. 1942. 27x20 inches, 68 1/2x50 3/4 cm. Kelly-Read & Co, Rochester. Condition B+: tears and abrasions in upper left corner; creases in margins and image. Paper. "A group of Rochester industrialists . . . were concerned about the mental sabotage of their workers by the infiltration of subversive propaganda from outside their plants . . . Out of this problem our company developed what is known as the 'Think American' program. It is now in use in over 5,000 of the largest industrial, business, financial, and educational organizations in nearly every state. 'Think American' consists of weekly illustrated messages, each of which points up vividly and intelligently a virtue or advantage of the American way of life. Plants display these posters near time clocks, in restrooms, and at other points of heaviest employee traffic. In these days when we are doing everything in our power to speed material preparedness and to prevent material sabotage, the need for mental preparedness and the prevention of mental sabotage cannot be overlooked. 'Think American,' we feel, is helping to do both of these jobs. Its messages are now reaching 7 million people weekly throughout the nation" (The Rotarian, September 1941, p. 3-4).

O/C Still Life w/Artist's Brushes, Dobrinsky, '48

by Louis J. Dianni, LLC

August 8, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Garrison, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $300 - $600

Description: Category: Paintings Description: This still life depicts the artist's work station with a sculpted bust, the artist's paint and brushes, and an oil lantern off to the left side of the desk. History:Dobrinsky lived in Kiev for six years. He began sculpting terracotta figures, and enrolled in Sabatovski art school. He worked as a storekeeper in a tin can factory during this period. In 1912, he won a prize for his sculpture which allowed him to move to Paris where he lived until his death in 1973. Upon his arrival in France, he became friends with the sculptor Marec Szwarc and the painter Chaim Soutine who helped him settle down in Paris and shared their studio with him. Dobrinsky abandoned sculpture in favor of painting a year after his arrival, as a result of ill health. His first painting was shown at the Salon d'Automne a few months later. In 1914, he joined the French Foreign Legion, but he was soon released on medical discharge. He then returned to Paris and attended the Colarossi Academy, where he met Vera Kremer (her father, Arkadi Kremer, was the founder of the Bund, the Jewish socialist party in Eastern Europe). The two got married in 1926. In 1934, he moved to a larger studio in Montparnasse, and in the next few years he made his major breakthrough in the art scene. These were happy days for the young couple, full of creativity. But Second World War put an end to this harmony. In the first two years of the German occupation, Dobrinsky and his family stayed in Paris, but in 1942, in order to escape deportation, they fled to a small village Dordogne. In 1944, after the liberation, Dobrinsky returned to Paris to find that the sculptures he had left behind were destroyed. In 1950, he was invited by Serge and Rachel Pludermacher (the founders of an orphan home) to paint the portraits of the children in their institute. In the course of two years, Dobrinsky worked on about forty portraits of young boys and girls. Dobrinsky used to say: “I don’t wish to be successful, I just wish to understand the mystery of creation”. Those who knew Dobrinsky say that there was something almost religious in his act of painting: very intimate and somewhat melancholic. Even though he had a heart condition during his last years, he had never stopped painting, and always in the same manner. When he died at the age of 81, he was working on a still life painting. Today he is remembered for his paintings rather than his sculptures.

Condition Report: No noticed damage or losses.
