Description: Title: The Bobwhite Quail: Its Habits, Preservation and IncreaseAuthor: Herbert L. Stoddard - "Herbert Stoddard, one of the most important southern conservationists of the twentieth century, developed a method of forest management in the longleaf-wiregrass region of Georgia that is still widely practiced today. Also known as an authority on the bobwhite quail, Stoddard advocated the reintroduction of fire as a land management tool, at a time when powerful forest interests considered burns to be a plague on the land. Along with his friend and colleague Aldo Leopold, Stoddard also helped to establish the profession of wildlife management, and he was among the first to critique from an ecological perspective the nation's move toward industrialized agriculture." Claes Oldenburg, Color Lithograph, Pizza/Palette, 1996

by Auctionata US

June 6, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: Color lithograph on Somerset paperUSA, 1996Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929) – American Pop artistSigned lower right ‘Oldenburg’Numbered in pencil lower left ‘44/100’Published by Pace Editions, New YorkAxsom & Platzker 264Full margins with deckled edgesImage dimensions: 23 ½ x 31 ¾ in. (59.7 x 80.6 cm.)Sheet dimensions: 29 3/8 x 38 ½ in. (74.6 x 97.8 cm.)Good condition Estimate $3,000-$4,000Often finding inspiration in comfort food and everyday objects, Claes Oldenburg’s brand of Pop Art is one infused with humor. “Pizza/Palette” portrays a sketchily drawn pizza topped with vegetables; one small slice is cut out, hinging open to reveal the blank background underneath. Sitting slightly upwards and with vegetables flying off, Oldenburg injects the food with a decidedly human quality. Executed in 1996, this color lithograph on Somerset paper is signed and numbered forty-four from an edition of one hundred. Published by Pace Editions, New York, the work has full margins with deckled edges, measuring 29 3/8 x 38 ½ inches. Handling creases in upper right and lower left corners, areas of surface dirt in right center. Otherwise good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. Claes Oldenburg (American, b. 1929)One of the best-loved artists of the Pop Art movement, Claes Oldenberg is known for his playful sculptures that create new meaning for everyday objects through expansion and deflation. Whereas artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein took popular media as their inspiration, Oldenburg found his muse in hamburgers, electric fans, bagels, and other familiar comforts. After studying at Yale University, Oldenburg moved to New York City where he met artists Jim Dine and Allan Kaprow. His works can be found in institutions worldwide, including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Musée national dart moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Brontë, Charlotte. Autograph envelope.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: 11. Brontë, Charlotte. Autograph envelope (2.75 x 4.5 in.; 71 x 121 mm.), postmarked on verso four times, Manchester, 27 December 1853, to Mrs. Gaskell; light spotting and soilingAn envelope addressed by Charlotte Brontë to Elizabeth Gaskell with a notation by Mrs. Gaskell. Bronte addressed the envelope: Mrs. Gaskell, Plymouth Grove, Manchester.” On the back of the envelope Mrs. Gaskell writes: “Miss Brontë’s handwriting. E. C. Gaskell.”A Victorian novelist, Elizabeth Gaskell is also noted for her biography of her friend, Charlotte Brontë. In 1850, The Gaskell family moved to Plymouth Grove, a large house beyond the manufacturing district in view of open fields. Here Elizabeth tried to bring some countryside to the town by keeping a vegetable garden, a cow and poultry. The house was always bustling and they entertained a stream of visitors there over the years including many eminent literary personages of the day, including Charlotte BrontëThe Manchester or the Gaskell’s time was a city of extremes. It was a great cultural and intellectual center, boasting institutions like the Literary and Philosophical Society, the Mechanics Institute and the Athenaeum. It was also the symbol of the new industrial age and the rapid growth of industry made a huge impact on the landscape of the city. It was also a time of great political change with Manchester as a center of Chartist activity. Elizabeth Gaskell observed all these social tensions intimately and used her observations (and the hypocrisy that she saw at work) in her novels that have become known since as her ‘industrial novel’ genre. Gaskell’s work brought her many admirers, including Charlotte Brontë. When Brontë died in 1855, her father, Patrick Brontë, asked Gaskell to write her biography. The Life of Charlotte Brontë was published in 1857 to wide acclaim and demonstrated Gaskell’s great narrative skill. A wonderful association piece. $4,000 - $6,000

(99 x 66 cm.)Overall dimensions: 47 x 35 in. (119.4 x 88.9 cm.)Very good condition Estimate $1,500-$1,700Layering multiple forms, printmaking techniques and materials, Mimmo Paladino displays an intimate understanding of medium and gesture in his “Carte Siciliane” series. Textured hand-made paper is formed in the shape of a human head’s profile, on which three buds crawl. In the center, Paladino layers images of hands, strings and apples in colored etching and engraving. As a result, questions of memory and expression are brought forth. Executed in 1998, this etching and engraving on hand made paper with chine collé is signed, dated and numbered thirty-nine from an edition of forty. The work measures 39 x 26 inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. Mimmo Paladino (Italian, b. 1948)Born Domenico Paladino in southern Italy, Mimmo Paladino played in pivotal role in reviving interest in painting at the end of the 1970’s when minimalism and conceptualism pervaded the art world. He was also one of the leading artists of the neo-expressionist Italian Transavantgarde movement in the 1980’s. His paintings, sculptures, and prints hold iconography suggestive of religious themes and ancient classicism. With numerous retrospectives at institutions like the Kunstmuseum Basel and Guggenheim, Paladino is internationally represented in collections like Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Galleries of Scotland, Tate Gallery, and Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.
