Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $13,000 - $19,000

Description: Exceptional Cased Exhibition Grade Pre-War H. Leukers Signed Master Engraved Double RifleThis is a beautiful example of an engraved European double rifle that according to consignor notes was embellished by Master engraver H. Leukers, quite possibly for the Paris Exhibition of 1937. Leukers was acknowledged as a Master Engraver in Belgium and was responsible for presenting 23 engraving designs for the Exhibition. With the unique design of the engraving on this rifle it is almost certain that this rifle was part of that exhibition. The locks, frame, trigger guard, break lever and forearm hardware are decorated an Art Deco style engraving made up of geometric and floral designs. Directly to the right of the triggers is signed "H. LEUKERS GRAVEUR LIEGE". The barrel flats are marked with various Belgium proofmarks. The underside of each barrel is marked "-SIEMENS MARTIN MARTELE (hammer) CAP J.F.", "35 W B. BLINDEE", "8.7" (which is the equivalent to 35 Winchester), the matching serial number and various Belgium proofmarks. The serial number and various Liege proofmarks are marked on the water table and the inside of the forearm hardware is marked with the matching serial number and "35". The matte solid rib is equipped with a blade front sight and a two leaf (one folding, one fixed) rear sight. Double triggers, cocking indicators, tang mounted manual safety with gold "S", blue barrels, break lever, triggers and trigger guard, and casehardened frame and locks. Mounted with a very attractive dark multi-point checkered walnut splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with a smooth horn grip cap and solid leather recoil pad. The rifle comes with a hard leather takedown case with leather straps, corner protectors and handle, and wine colored felt lining with a leather patch attached to the inside of the lid which reads "MADE IN ENGLAND/For STOEGER ARMS CORP/NEW YORK". In the case are a dark walnut handled screwdriver, brush and three piece cleaning rod with dark walnut handle, two silver snap caps/blank cartridges and a nickel oiler. Length of pull: 14 inches, drop at comb: 1 5/8 inches, drop at heel: 2 3/8 inches, cast-off: 1/2 inches, weight: 7lbs 0oz.Manufacturer: BelgiumModel: Double BarrelBBL: 23 1/2 inch solid ribStock: walnutGauge: 35 WinchesterFinish: blue/casehardened/coinGrips: Serial Number: 7284

Condition Report: Excellent. The barrels, trigger guard and lever retain 98% original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear and light handling marks. The locks and frame have nearly all of a very attractive coin finish with most original case colors present on the water table. The wood is extremely fine with a few small grain imperfections present on the right side of the stock, overall some minor dings and handling marks, and crisp checkering. The engraving is crisp. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine with some scuffs and wear on the exterior and some contact wear and stains on the lining. Spectacular Cased Charles Lancaster Quad Barrel Hammerless Shotgun with Accessories

Lot 1428: Spectacular Cased Charles Lancaster Quad Barrel Hammerless Shotgun with Accessories

by Rock Island Auction Company

May 3, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $60,000 - $90,000

Description: Spectacular Cased Charles Lancaster Quad Barrel Hammerless Shotgun with AccessoriesLancaster was a second generation London Gunsmith who made a number of contributions to the design of armaments, including systems for muzzle loading rifled cannons and his signature Lancaster Pistol, a monstrous quad-barreled firearm and logical evolution of the Howdah design. The mechanism from the Lancaster Pistol has been put to work in this arm, in a significant deviation from the single and double barrel breechloaders of the day; departing from the conventional wisdom of using the opening barrel as a lever for recocking an internal hammer or striker assembly, the Lancaster uses a double action internal hammer with rotating striker and four fixed inertial firing pins, with each pull of the trigger cocking the hammer and rotating the striker to line up with the next pin, discharging each barrel in a rotary sequence. The barrels themselves are arranged in a "square" configuration, two up and two down, with a single nickel sight bead in the concave top rib, which is lightly engraved at the breech and bears the legend "CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND STt LONDON PATENT FOUR BARREL BREECH LOADING HAMMERLESS GUN". Each chamber is marked with a London "GP" and "V" proof along with the number "16". 2 3/4 inch chambers and a single extractor. The frame is engraved with "rope" pattern borders and floral screws, with "CHARLES LANCASTER'S PATENT/LONDON" on each side and a gold inlaid "SAFE" marking underneath the tang safety switch. The breech face bears another Lancaster Patent marking, with the individual recoil shields and pin bushings punch dot numbered to match, starting at the upper left barrel and running counter-clockwise (as viewed from the front). The stock is sharply checkered straight wrist walnut, with diamond profiles and lightly engraved hardware on the splinter forearm, a golden inscription oval engraved with a crest of a dragon head over a banner reading "MENS FORTIS IN ARDUIS" (The Mind is Strong in Adversity) and a leather covered recoil pad. The symbol has not been positively identified. Length of pull is 15 inches, drop at comb is 1 9/16 inches, drop at heel is 2 5/16 inches. Bores measure .772 (right over) and .773 (left over), .773 (right under) and .772 (left under), the wall thickness is .025 (right over) and .026 (left over), .022 (right under) and .026 (left under), the bore constriction is .000 (right over) (Cyl) and .004 (left over) (Skt), .004 (right under) (Skt) and .005 (left under) (Skt). The shotgun weighs 8.65 lbs., a light weight for a four barrel shotgun. Included with the shotgun is a brown leather covered case, with brass corner reinforcement, the trade label of Charles Lancaster inside the lid, 4 snap caps, a Lancaster marked solvent container, a carved bone small parts container, two ebony handled screwdrivers (one with Lancaster markings), a pack of bore cleaning patches, and a multi-piece cleaning rod.Manufacturer: Lancaster Charles Model: SXSBBL: 27 3/4 inch solid ribStock: walnutGauge: 16Finish: blue/casehardenedGrips: Serial Number: 5087

Condition Report: Very good as period refurbished. 90% of the brown finish remains on the barrels, showing some light handling marks and a strong Damascus pattern, with some fading along the edges. Bright and vivid case colors are present throughout the frame, with some silvering along the edges and an attractive blue finish on the components. Stock is very fine, with a small chip absent from the left side of the forearm tip, a few light pressure dents and sharp checkering. The case is good, with mild wear along the edges and on the lining. Mechanically excellent. An impressive weapon in fit and finish as well as mechanically intriguing, all but guaranteed to turn heads wherever displayed. This is the only one of these we have ever offered at auction and possibly the only 16 gauge Charles Lancaster quad barreled shotgun in the world!

Leonard Taylor

Lot 16: Leonard Taylor

by RR Auction

April 24, 2014, 6:00 PM EST

Boston, MA, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: ALS signed "Your loving son, Len," two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, embossed White Star on board R.M.S. 'Titanic' letterhead, April 9, 1912. Letter to his parents. In full: "I am on the briney [sic] ocean, & leaving Queenstown we passed Cherbourg last night. I suppose you read about our narrow escape when coming out of the docks at Southampton. The sucking power of the propellers was so great that she broke loose another vessel lying outside port and was only an airsbreath from hitting her. I am very comfortable-getting good food & a good bunk, my wages are low but I will let you know all later as I want to catch the Queenstown mail, I am only writing to let you know I am all right. I will write next week sending full particulars about my none too good job. Well good by. I shall come home after the trip as it is cheaper they issue tickets at £1." Under his signature, Taylor adds a brief postscript which reads, "The boat's rocking about." Accompanied by the incredibly rare original embossed White Star mailing envelope, addressed in Taylor's hand to his parents in Blackpool, and bearing a Queenstown postal cancellation, with a partially-legible date. In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds and some scattered mild soiling.Only 18 years old, Taylor signed on as a Turkish Bath attendant on board the luxury liner three days earlier on April 6. His pay was slightly more than £4 per week, which he comments on as "low," for his "none too good job," as he would have been the junior man in the baths. As the Titanic left Southampton, it came within several feet of crashing into the S. S. New York, due to the large displacement of water caused by the ship and Captain Smith's difficulty in navigating through the a congested harbor. Taylor mentions the impressive power of the ship, which could max out at around 46,000 horsepower, and was responsible for snapping the New York's mooring lines almost causing a catastrophic collision before even hitting the open ocean. The content of the letter dates it to April 11 as the ship sailed from Queenstown on that day, with Taylor seemingly too occupied to write the letter he intended to write and send earlier on the April 9. Unfortunately, he would never fulfill his promise of coming home, as he died in the sinking and his body was never recovered. Any letter written from on board the liner is quite rare and extremely desirable, even more so by a member of the crew, and particularly with its very rare White Star envelope.

R.M.S. TITANIC: Unique letter from Second Class

Lot 205: R.M.S. TITANIC: Unique letter from Second Class

by Henry Aldridge & Son

April 26, 2014, 1:00 PM GMT

Devizes, United Kingdom

Description: R.M.S. TITANIC: Unique letter from Second Class passenger and survivor Nellie Walcroft written shortly after she arrived in New York. The letter is written over 3 pages and describes her horrific ordeal in great detail. It includes reference to one of the most controversial events shortly after Titanic's collision with the iceberg. She describes in astonishing detail "the boat bow officer seeing our danger jumped on the boat, shot the men to keep them from swamping us". Would you send this on to Alice when you have read it please Huddington Farm I am so tired of writing, Mamaroneck, New York, U.S.A. My dearest Clara, Just a line or two just to let you know we are quite safe. After our terrible experience one would never have believed when you saw me off on that journey before a week was out what I should have to go through. I am glad to say my cold is the only ill effects so far, so Clara to see that magnificent ship like a floating palace go down in the sea was an awful spectacle. We had 70ft to be let down in the boat & when we were going down the steerage passenger jumped in the boat & our Officer seeing our danger jumped in the boat and shot the men to keep them from swamping us & when nearly to the bottom, the ropes letting the lifeboats down refused to act and they had to cut the rope and we dropped I thought that was my last minute - there was 59 in our boat when we got well away from the ship and after the ship had gone down you should have heard the cries of those poor men and women I could never describe it. It seemed to last about 2 hours that terrible cry of help (After the cries had- is crossed out). After the ship had gone down we had to change our boats to let our officer go back to the rescue and when we got into the boat there were 4 dead men and a madman I think they pushed him overboard. I never saw him again after rowing for 7 hours we got picked up by the Carpathia we shouted for joy when we saw the ship they took us up with ropes & gave us all neat brandy. There were 710 rescued so that could not put us all up so we slept on tables for 5 days. They were very kind to us indeed in everyway. The suffering was frightful we had 35 women who had lost their husbands on board and one can imagine the agony of these women not knowing if their husbands where (sic) living or dead & how glad we was to see New York. It was in a fever here we were given some clothes directly we came off there was steamer with 100 coffins waiting for the dead but most that died where (sic) buried at sea. The flashlights took our photo I was so glad to meet Carl and his friend they soon got cab & we were snap shoted (sic) everywhere. There were 70.000 persons roped off in charge of the police they all where (sic) so glad to see us & the world sympathy is ours in New York but I shall never never go on a floating palace again. Write to me soon send me any recipes you have got there With much love Your loving friend Nell. Nellie was travelling with her friend Clear Cameron to America under a Second Class joint ticket (No. 13528 £21).
