Lot 228: Enrico Caruso Hand-Drawn Caricature on ''Lloyd Sabaudo'' Yacht Line Stationery

by Nate D Sanders

July 31, 2014, 5:00 PM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $300 - $450

Description: World-famous Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso's hand-drawn sketch, unsigned, on Llyod Sabaudo yacht line stationery. Best known for his signature role as Canio in ''Pagliacci,'' Caruso was also a pioneer in recorded sound, selling a million records at the dawn of the medium. More obscure was his passion for visual art, particularly caricatures, a medium he became quite accomplished at over his lifetime. Likely a friend or acquaintance circa 1917, whimsical portrait depicts a woman with curly hair and big eyes with exaggerated eyelashes posing theatrically. Drawing is done in a brown ink and measures 6.75'' x 10.5''. Matted in white to an overall size of 10.5'' x 14.5''. Toning throughout and minor folds, else very good condition.

Part From The Wright Brothers' Groundbreaking 1910 Plane, The ''Wright Model B'' -- The World's First Mass-Produced Airplane

Lot 355: Part From The Wright Brothers' Groundbreaking 1910 Plane, The ''Wright Model B'' -- The World's First Mass-Produced Airplane

by Nate D Sanders

July 31, 2014, 5:00 PM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $750

Description: Original nickel turnbuckle from the Wright Brothers' WWI airplane, the ''Wright Model B''. Designed in 1910, the Model B was the first-ever mass-produced airplane, a dedicated two-seater with the pilot and a passenger sitting side-by-side on the leading edge of the lower wing. The Wrights' sold the aircraft to the U.S. Aeronautical Division and to the United States Navy as hydroplanes which were used as trainers. One Model B aircraft, named ''Vin Fiz Flyer'', underwent slight modification and became the first plane flown across the United States. This turnbuckle was likely part of the bracing for the wires between the biplane's upper and lower pairs of wings. Airplane piece measures 3'' at the center, with adjustable-length screws on either side. Tarnishing, else near fine. Originally from the estate of Louis Christman, who worked directly with Orville Wright, and with provenance from Cowan's.
