John Updike. Rabbit, Run. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 19

Lot 45746: John Updike. Rabbit, Run. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 19

by Heritage Auctions

April 8, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: John Updike. Rabbit, Run. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Updike on the front free endpaper: "for Dick Gillman [sp]/Best wishes/and good cheer/John Updike". Octavo. [viii], [310], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth backstrip over blue paper boards, front board stamped in silver, rear board stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt and silver, dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit sunned, some edgewear, thumbsoiling, and a few tears (some creased) to jacket, minor rubbing to binding. Overall, a very good copy. The recipient of this copy was well-known literary critic Richard Gilman (not "Gillman," as Updike has spelled it), who worked for Commonweal and New Republic. Gilman's blurb (written for Commonweal) appears on the rear jacket flap: "Turning on a narrow plot of ground, it achieves the rarity of bounded, native truth, and comes forth as microcosm." Although the blurb for this book is positive, Gilman would occasionally give negative reviews to Updike's later work. From the Palo Alto Collection of Modern Literature.

The background from the concluding night scene is on 5-peghole paper mounted on board, and is labeled "2414 Sc 108" at the bottom. The background is 12.5" x 15". by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Description: Touché and Go Pepe Le Pew and Penelope Pussycat Production Cel (Warner Brothers, 1957). That stinker Pepe Le Pew has cornered Penelope Pussycat again in this hand-inked, hand-painted production cel in 12 field, 3-peghole format. It is very rare to find 50's Looney Tunes cels of this character, doubly so for one featuring Pepe and the object of his affection on the same cel layer! This Chuck Jones-directed, Mike Maltese-written short was released on October 10th, 1957. This underwater scene has several bubble effects. The characters, in scuba masks and flippers, measure 8" x 5.5". With the bubble effects, the scene measures 8.5" x 8". There is paint separation throughout and paint loss in several places on this very rare cel. In Fair to Good condition.
