Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Featherweight Rifle

Lot 69: Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Featherweight Rifle

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $4,000

Description: serial #461820, 358 Win, 22" barrel with a bright, mostly excellent bore which shows some minor oxidation and perhaps light pitting nearer the throat. The metal surfaces retain about 97% original blue and anodized finishes showing some minor handling marks and light muzzle wear. The bolt body is bright with only light operational marks and is correctly numbered on its underside to the gun; the knob is toning to silver with a very small area of light relief on the handle likely for scope clearance. The checkered walnut Monte Carlo stock rates very good plus to near excellent with overall tiny dings and light handling marks. What appears to be the original factory sights are in place, the rear sight showing some impact marks on the left and right side of its base. While catalogued only until 1956, this 1957-manufactured gun appears to be an original authentic chambering, the buttplate is the plastic composite which is correct for a 1957 gun (aluminum buttplates were discontinued in 1956); the underside of the barrel is completely unmarked but for the witness mark. Overall a very nice example of these very rare factory large bore featherweight chamberings. (36520-2872) [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection] {C&R}

Colt Python Double Action Revolver

Lot 176: Colt Python Double Action Revolver

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: serial #3505, 357 Magnum, 6" ventilated rib barrel with an excellent, bright bore. The metal surfaces rate excellent and retain about 97% plus of their factory original Royal Blue finish, with a few extremely faint handling marks and a minor isolated instance of light fading around the left side of the muzzle. The fluted cylinder rates excellent and also retains about 98% plus of its factory original Royal Blue finish, but displays a light turn ring. The checkered black rubber Pachmayr grips rate and feel excellent and exhibit negligible signs of handling. The revolver features its original front ramp and adjustable rear sights. Despite its age, this early production (1957 vintage) Python appears to have seen extremely limited use and remains in excellent condition overall. The Python's reputation for accuracy, combined with the exemplary condition of this particular model, should prove to make this a well sought after handgun and superb shooter. (136708-2)

Gallagher Standard Model Civil War Carbine By Richardson & Overman

Lot 183: Gallagher Standard Model Civil War Carbine By Richardson & Overman

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: serial #15728, .50 cal. percussion, 22 3/8" barrel with a bright very good bore which shows strong rifling with light oxidation within the grooves. The barrel is primarily a dark blue-gray patina showing remnants of minor oxidation, light pitting and some scattered handling marks and dings. The frame and lockplate are a mottled dark gray case-hardened patina, also showing some minor dings and handling marks with the lockplate showing some light pitting. Buttplate and patchbox are the same dark gray mottled patina. The stock rates very good showing an old light cleaning with some minor dings and handling marks, the toe of the buttplate now being slightly proud of the wood. Both the lever and link are numbered "310". The gun seems to function well mechanically and the sling ring is intact on the bar. (36628-12) {ANTIQUE}

Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Super Grade Rifle

Lot 197: Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Super Grade Rifle

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $4,000

Description: serial #6169, 375 H&H, 25" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this early pre-war rifle retain about 97%-98% factory blue. The receiver and bottom metal are clearly refinished, extremely well in a factory polish. The receiver proof no longer has its raised wire edge, the barrel proof however exhibiting raised metal and original factory finish, the barrel a much later 1957-vintage with the solder-on front sight ramp. The bolt body is bright with the knob having toned to a silvery patina, it is appropriately DC pencil-numbered to the receiver. The walnut classic style stock rates excellent showing only minor dings and handling marks from light use. The original front sight is intact, its hood is no longer present; the appropriate 50s-vintage Winchester model 70B "rollover" rear sight is in place as well. The underside of the barrel is stamped "Super" and shows the later additional magnum recoil block normally affixed to these 50s-era barrels; the stock appropriately, very neatly inletted for it. Overall an excellent large-bore Super Grade, clearly factory re-barreled at some point in the 50s, the factory doubtless refinishing the metal at the same time. (36520-2824) [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection] {C&R}

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,200

Description: serial #46962, 348 Win, 24" barrel with an excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95% original blue that has a few areas of light handling wear and spots of very light pitting and surface oxidation, most of which is around the muzzle. The checkered deluxe walnut stocks rate excellent and have a few light dings and have some minor flaking. Both the forearm and the short tang buttstock show evidence of having been lightly cleaned and professionally restored. The correct sling swivel bases and detachable swivels are intact. The original sights, including the front sight hood are present as well. A near excellent 1957 vintage example overall that should make a terrific shooter or large bore hunting rifle. by Swann Auction Galleries

August 6, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (1870-1960) WAKE UP AMERICA DAY. 1917. 41x27 3/4 inches, 104x70 1/2 cm. Condition B+: abrasions in image; repaired tears and overpainting in margins; vertical and horizontal folds. On April 6, 1917, the United States Congress declared war on Germany. Over the next two weeks, the Recruiting Committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense organized one of New York's largest public recruiting campaigns in history (a campaign that was also nationwide). The day chosen to "Wake Up America" was April 19, the anniversary of the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. It was on the night prior to these two historic battles that Paul Revere took to his horse and made his famous ride announcing to American colonists that the British were coming. The event, to be held on the 142nd anniversary of Revere's ride, was a giant parade down 5th Avenue, which attracted over 60,000 spectators. Airplanes, "the Paul Reveres of the skies," dropped appeals for recruits all over the city. Flagg supervised the construction of ten floats for the parade, several of which he actually designed himself. Given the short time between the declaration of war and the massive event, Flagg had to design this poster very quickly, which likely explains why it is composed of fewer colors than his normal lithographic work. The image, evoking a female Paul Revere emerging from the darkness, was not just a graphic flight of fancy. The "Wake Up America Day" celebrations began at midnight with a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride made by a young woman. Jean Earle Mohle, dressed as a Continental soldier, rode south through the streets of Manhattan "summoning the men of America to respond to their country's call" (New York Times, April 19, 1917). This is an image which Flagg, in his "only attempt at modernity" (Meehan 20), captures magnificently. Flagg 69, Modern American 25, Rawls 136, Borkan p. 178.

Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat HuShih Boxwood wooden statue, PROVENANCE: Mr. Smith, Washington DC.

by Metropolitan Auction

August 9, 2014, 1:00 PM EST

Coram, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $3,500

Description: Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat HuShih Boxwood wooden statue, PROVENANCE: Mr. Smith, Washington DC. Biography Hu Shih (17 December 1891¨C24 February 1962), was a Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat. Hu is widely recognized today as a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform in his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese. He was influential in the May Fourth Movement, one of the leaders of China's New Culture Movement, was a president of Peking University, and in 1939 was nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature.He had a wide range of interests such as literature, history, textual criticism, and pedagogy. He was also an influential redology scholar and held the famous Jiaxu manuscript for many years until his death. Hu was born in Shanghai to Hu Chuan His ancestors were from Jixi, Anhui. In January 1904, his family established an arranged marriage for Hu with Chiang Tung-hsiu, an illiterate girl with bound feet who was one year older than he was. The marriage took place in December 1917. Hu received his fundamental education in Jixi and Shanghai. Hu became a "national scholar" through funds appropriated from the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program. On 16 August 1910, he was sent to study agriculture at Cornell University in the United States. In 1912 he changed his major to philosophy and literature. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he went to Columbia University to study philosophy. At Columbia he was greatly influenced by his professor, John Dewey, and Hu became Dewey's translator and a lifelong advocate of pragmatic evolutionary change, helping Dewey in his 1919-1921 lectures series in China. He returned to lecture in Peking University. During his tenure there, he received support from Chen Duxiu, editor of the influential journal New Youth, quickly gaining much attention and influence. Hu soon became one of the leading and influential intellectuals during the May Fourth Movement and later the New Culture Movement. He quit New Youth in the 1920s and published several political newspapers and journals with his friends. His most important contribution was the promotion of vernacular Chinese in literature to replace Classical Chinese, which ideally made it easier for the ordinary person to read. The significance of this for Chinese culture was great¡ªas John Fairbank put it, "the tyranny of the classics had been broken".[4] Hu devoted a great deal of energy, however, to rooting his linguistic reforms in China's traditional culture rather than relying on imports from the west. As his biographer Jerome Grieder put it, Hu's approach to China's "distinctive civilization" was "thoroughly critical but by no means contemptuous." For instance, he made a major contribution to the textual study of the Chinese classical novel, especially the 18th century novel Dream of the Red Chamber, as a way of establishing the vocabulary for a modern standardized language. Hu Shih's tombstone in the park named after him, near Academia Sinica in Taiwan Hu was the Republic of China's ambassador to the United States of America between 1938 and 1942. He was recalled in September 1942 and was replaced by Wei Tao-ming. Hu then served as chancellor of Peking University between 1946 and 1948, and later (1957) president of the Academia Sinica in Taipei, where he remained until his death. He was also chief executive of the Free China Journal, which was eventually shut down for criticizing Chiang Kai-shek. He died of a heart attack in Nankang, Taipei at the age of 70, and is buried in a tomb in Hu Shih Park, by the Academia Sinica campus. Hu Shih's work fell into disrepute in mainland China until a 1986 article, written by Ji Xianlin, "A Few Words for Hu Shi", advocated acknowledging not only Hu Shih's mistakes, but also his contributions to modern Chinese literature. His article was sufficiently convincing to many scholars that it caused a re-evaluation of the development of modern Chinese literature and the role of Hu Shih. China, Good condition, minor age cracks as expected, overall wear due to age. Measure: Height 10.13 ", diameter of max 3.13 ". Domestic shipping (48 states) : $39.95.

Two boathouses are rendered in the foreground. The background depicts the view of the lake. On the opposite shore the silhouette of a small village can be discerned, embedded in the green mountains. With broad impasto brush strokes Lüdecke-Cleve has captured a warm summer day in harmonious colors. Time and time again the German painter captured the changing impressions of the Upper Bavarian countryside in his works.The painting is in overall good condition. In the center there is a vertical tear (approx. 5 cm), which is backed with a patch of canvas and only faintly visible. The work is signed and dated 'August Lüdecke-Cleve 23' in blue lower left. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 58 x 74 cm, the stretcher frame measures 36 x 53 cm.August Lüdecke-Cleve (1868-1957)August Lüdecke-Cleve initially studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf under Hugo Crola and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Franz Roubaud and Heinrich von Zügel. He graduated his master class with a silver medal. From 1901 onwards, he had his studio in Munich and repeatedly traveled to the Lower Rhine, the Chiemsee and the Salzkammergut. Lüdecke-Cleve was a member of the artist group Laetitia in Dusseldorf, Munich Artists' Association and the Munich Artists' Society Allotria. He first showed his works in Dusseldorf and from 1908 onwards he regularly exhibited in the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1943 his studio in Munich was destroyed. He then settled in the Allgäu. The painter created mostly landscapes and animal paintings. His late work is defined by representations of cows. The influence of his teacher von Zügel can be seen in his subject matter, use of color, lighting effects as well as the broad brushwork.
