An Old War Shield, Simbai,

by Theodore Bruce

August 17, 2015, 6:00 PM AEST

Sydney, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD800 - AUD1,200

Description: An Old War Shield, Simbai, Provenance: Allan D Christensen Collection no CC60612 Collected by Philip Goldman, Allen D. and Carmen M. Christensen founded The Christensen Fund as a private foundation in California in 1957. Allen, who was a civil and mining engineer, served as president of the Utah Mining and Construction Company for many years. He was an enthusiastic and eclectic traveller and art collector with wide intellectual interests. Beginning in the early 1970s, The Christensen Fund added to its various mostly San Francisco Bay Area-based charitable and educational activities the acquisition of fine arts and ethnographic artefacts. Its first art collection was a group of Pomo Indian baskets that are now at Harvard University's Peabody Museum. From 1972 to 1999 the fund was a private operating foundation, its operations being the collection and loan of as many as 35,000 pieces of what it then called "Non-Western Art" to major museums for their study and exhibition in Australia, Europe and the United States. 96 x 58cm

August 21, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1 - €2

Description: Four colour lithographs on paperFrance, 20th centuryFrançoise Deberdt (born 1934) – French painter and sculptorEach signed lower right side, “F. Deberdt”Each with edition number lower left sideFramed in passe-partout and behind glassOverall dimensions (framed): between 33.5 x 39.5 cm and 38.5 x 42.5 cmVery good conditionEstimate by Auctionata Expert: 900 EURThese four etchings depict different motifs, all of them colourful and of a merry design. Together they form a particularly beautiful decorative ensemble. On the first panel an angelic girl sits on the back of a red horse and blows her slender horn – a fairy tale like scene. The next panel features a man with red cheeks and a bike who hands a large flower bouquet to his beloved one as she runs towards him. In the next picture a woman with a summer bouquet in her hands floats past crooked houses. As the leitmotif, the flower bouquet appears again in the last panel of the group. Here, a young couple accompanied by an overly large cat takes a walk as if on clouds. The supersize bouquet towers over the lovely romantic scene. All four colour etchings are in very good condition. The frame merely shows minimal traces of age and use. Each of the pictures is signed, “F. Deberdt”, at the lower right side and inscribed with the respective edition number at the lower left side. The overall dimensions framed are (White Horse, edition number 229/295) 40 x 33.5 cm and the paper’s size is 19 x 14 cm. The “Man with Bike” measures framed 33.5 x 39.5 cm (Edition number 229/295) and the paper’s size is 13.8 x 18.8 cm; the “flower bouquet” measures 38.5 x 42.5 cm (Edition number 252/295) and image cut-out measures 24.5 x 30 cm. The “Couple with bouquet and fruit basket” and “The floating woman” each measure 38.5 x 42.5 cm (Edition number 252/295) and the image cut-outs are 24.5 x 30 cm.Françoise DeberdtFrançoise Deberdt was born in 1934 in Donnemarie-en-Montois at the Département Seine-et-Marne. She studied at the Academy of Craftwork and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She spent almost four years in Rome and studied the Villa Medici.
