1957 <em>Loving You</em> Standee Featuring a Nearly Life-Sized Elvis Presley - A Super-Rare Display Piece

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: What's as surprising as this display piece's survival is the fact that it wasn't covered with lipstick! One can only imagine the theater managers beating away young female fans with a stick as they approached this just-short-of-actual-size Elvis Presley. It was produced to promote Elvis' second film, the 1957 Paramount Pictures production of Loving You, with co-stars Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey and Dolores Hart. The film told a story with many echoes from Elvis' own experience to that point, complete with the meteoric rise and aggressive management. This extremely rare standee (only a handful are known to exist) does its own part in capturing Elvis' megastar stature. The standee measures approximately 71 x 36 inches (180.34 x 91.44 cm). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Condition Report: The standee is in two pieces, which have both been reinforced with foam core backing, but can be easily assembled for display by connecting the foam core backing. Several small repairs (the hand) have been made to strengthen the piece, all of which is fairly standard on the few examples of this that have surfaced intact. Overall Very Good condition.

1957 <em>Loving You</em> Six-Sheet Movie Poster

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: This high-grade, massive survivor from Elvis' second film, the 1957 Paramount Pictures production of Loving You, presents an awesome spectacle to behold. Elvis dominates this poster, seen as he was in real life at the time, in all his performing glory and surrounded by co-stars (and now lower-billed stars than the young singer) Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey and Dolores Hart. The story of Deke Rivers, a delivery man vaulted into stardom by a publicist and older country western star, was said to have been inspired in part by co-writer Hal Kantner witnessing Colonel Tom's escapades with Elvis on the Louisiana Hayride. He got some of it right, but this giant beauty of a movie poster display piece gets it all right. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The poster measures approximately 81 by 81 inches (205.74 x 205.74 cm).

Condition Report: Poster has been expertly assembled by a professional restorer (six sheets were often produced in several sections, this one in four such pieces). Minor, expected color fills have been employed on the seams. Bold, like-new presentation in its apparent Very Fine to Near Mint condition.

1957 <em>Jailhouse Rock</em> Six-Sheet Movie Poster

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: An absolutely stunning 81 by 81 inch (205.74 x 205.74 cm) display featuring Elvis "at his greatest" promoting the 1957 MGM film Jailhouse Rock. There's Vince Everett, our anti-hero, literally bigger than life, staring down at us and contemplating the trials and tribulations of an ex-con turned singing star and holding co-star Jennifer Holden ever so close. This Jailhouse Rock six-sheet is considered the pinnacle of the form when it comes to oversized posters of the era, a masterpiece of design and promotion. The movie catches Elvis in his prime, in full ascension to super-stardom as both actor and musical performer — this poster embodies that spirit as you look up to take it all in. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Condition Report: The poster has been expertly assembled and linen backed by a professional restorer (six sheets were often produced in several sections, this example in four such sections). There are expected color touches at the seams. Stunning Very Fine to Near Mint condition on linen.

1957 <em>Jailhouse Rock</em> French Grande Movie Poster - Beautiful Jailhouse Musical Number Image

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: This stunning and oversized French contribution to the Elvis movie posters promoting the 1957 MGM hit Jailhouse Rock was designed by artist Roger Soubie. Its focus on the embracing kiss of its superstar and detailed portrayal of the film's now-iconic big dance number put this poster at the top of many collectors' lists of favorites. Co-stars Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy, Dean Jones and Jennifer Holden help Elvis through Richard Thorpe's direction of this tale of Vince Everett, a young man jailed for manslaughter who is taught to embrace the musical gift that becomes his redemption, leads to great success and ultimately almost becomes his downfall. Considering that at the time critics and some organizations found the film's themes, bedroom scenes and language scandalous, we can only imagine how they might have reacted to this "explicit" artwork adorning the walls of the local theatre! Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The poster measures approximately 63 by 47 inches (160.2 x 119.38 cm).

Condition Report: The poster has benefited from mounting on foam core and minor professional restoration including minor color touches and paper repairs along the original factory folds. In impressive apparent Very Fine to Near Mint condition.

1957 <em>Jailhouse Rock</em> Unused Premiere Press Invitation with 45 Record Inside and Cast and Crew Thank You Envelope

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Elvis began production on the film Jailhouse Rock in May of 1957 and by June 17 it was finished. In the film, Elvis plays an inmate with untapped singing ability who begins to harness his talent and eventually rises to stardom after being released. Elvis performs a dance number to the title song, which is often cited as Presley's greatest moment on screen. The movie was released in Memphis in October 1957 and then nationally in November to overall gross revenue of $4 million. In 2004, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Offered is an invitation to the press preview at the MGM Theater on October 10 at 8:30 p.m. with entrance "Thru Studio East Gate." The square invite is on turquoise-colored paper with a circular cutout through which you can view the cover of the Jailhouse Rock 45 record cover enclosed within the invitation. The turquoise-colored paper invite has a top flap which folds over the record to hold the invitation in place, and the flap is intended to be torn off to become the entrance ticket to the event. This "ticket flap" is still intact and the invitation remains over the original 45 record cover and record. The invitation is being sold with a complete large brown paper folder on which is printed "Thanks to the entire crew and case of M-G-M's Jailhouse Rock from Elvis and the Colonel." This likely held promotional material that Colonel would have made for the film, which he had done for previous Elvis movies. The invitation and folder are framed together in a display against a red background with a gold-colored plaque that states, "October 10, 1957 Jailhouse Rock Press Preview Invitation MGM Cast & Crew Thank You Envelope handed out by Elvis & the Colonel." One can imagine the excitement at the wrap party for a movie filmed so quickly and the gratitude from the Colonel, as his star could now focus on promoting the album. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The invitation measures approximately 7 1/8 by 7 1/8 inches (18.097 x 18.097 cm), the thank you envelope measures approximately 14 by 17 inches (35.56 x 43.18 cm), and the display measures approximately 22 by 33 1/2 inches (55.88 x 85.09 cm).

Condition Report: The invitation is in remarkable condition. The large thank you envelope is in good condition, with a crease down the center, tape residue on three corner edges and staples along the left side, top and bottom, and it is adhered to the display from the backside. The color on the brown envelope is still strong and bold.

1957 Settlement Statement on Elvis Letterhead in Framed Display

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: This framed display includes a settlement statement for Elvis Presley's earnings for the month ending January 31, 1957, from Col. Tom Parker and 26 images of Elvis on the right and left sides and along the bottom. Payments came in from Paramount, Elvis Presley Music and RCA Victor totaling $5,513.22 for the month after taxes. When you compare that to the $4,700 reported U.S. average annual income for a man working at a full-time job in 1957, Elvis was not doing badly. Despite Elvis' name being spelled out in large letters at the top of the statement, the typist spelled Elvis' name incorrectly as "ELBIS."  "Col. Tom Parker - Exclusive Management - Madison, Tennessee" is printed in black at the bottom center of the statement, next to a drawing of a mailbox with "P.O. 417." The statement is displayed against a burgundy background with a descriptive nameplate and framed. This statement gives us a peek into the financial life of the young superstar. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated and original letter of authenticity from the 1999 Graceland Archives Auction. The statement page measures approximately 8 1/2 by 14 inches (21.6 x 35.6 cm) and the framed display measures approximately 15 1/2 by 21 7/16 inches (30.37 x 54.45 cm).

Condition Report: The framed display is in overall excellent condition.

Elvis' relationship with MGM began in 1957 with the filming of Jailhouse Rock and continued through 1969 with his starring role in The Trouble with Girls. Collection of Four Christmas Cards from Elvis and the Colonel, '56, '57, '58 and '60

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $750 - $1,500

Description: This collection of four holiday cards, circa 1950s, is an excellent example of the greetings sent by the Colonel and Elvis during this period. Included is a 1956 card, that on the front reads "Dig That Crazy Swiss Bell Ringer," and on the inside states "To wish you a Cool Yule and a Frantic First - Elvis Presley Colonel Parker." "1956" is written in blue ink on the front of the card and a portion of Santa's whiskers and the ball of his hat have also been "enhanced" in blue ink as well. This card is accompanied by its envelope, which is stamped on the back "Exclusive Management - Thomas A Parker - Box 417 Madison, Tenn." The holiday postcard dated 1957 features images of presents in front of a tree and reads "Holiday Greetings to You All - from Elvis and the Colonel." The card from 1958 features Elvis in uniform with a circular inset of the Colonel dressed as Santa and reads "Holiday Greetings to You All - from Elvis and the Colonel" and has "1958 All Rights Reserved All Star Shows" in the lower right hand corner. The fourth card, from 1960, features three images of Elvis in a suit jacket with the Colonel dressed as Santa superimposed on pen and ink illustrations of Christmas tree ornaments and reads "Everything good to all of you - Elvis and The Colonel." It was common for the Colonel and Elvis to send joint greetings at the holiday time and these are great examples of the varying designs. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The cards each measure approximately 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches (21.59 x 13.97 cm) with one measuring approximately 7 by 5 inches (17.78 x 12.7 cm).

Condition Report: The condition of the 1950s sets is exemplary, with only King Creole having any significant distresses in the way of edge toning and some tape on the back of several cards. Date markings in pen are noted in the list above. Loving You cards have very small pin holes. The 1960s cards are nearly free of expected distresses, with most in Very Fine condition and many in Near Mint condition with a range of very minor issues including some corner wear and mild age toning on some, which we mention only out a sense of complete accuracy. This is an incredibly fresh group of lobby cards.

1957 Elvis Presley Enterprises Elvis Presley Doll in Rare Original Box

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $7,000 - $10,000

Description: The offered Elvis Presley doll is not only incredibly rare, but this example is in unbelievably excellent condition still in its original box. The Elvis doll sports his original plaid shirt, black belt, blue pants, white socks and blue suede shoes and the amazing condition of the doll and box cannot be overstated, since the soft "magic skin" of the doll was made from a material which tended to deteriorate over time. Any young girl in the 50s who had owned this doll would have likely shown it plenty of love and affection, and over the years many were lost to time and use, further contributing to the rarity of this stunning example. The doll head is marked at the base of the neck with "Elvis Presley Enterprises © 1957" and the clothing is also in remarkable condition and was one of the few items that bore the 1957 copyright date. The doll is still nestled in its pink and blue plaid original box with label from Acme Merchandise Co, Inc. Obviously, the original owner cherished this Elvis Presley doll with respect reserved for a king, thereby leaving this treasured time capsule in like-new condition more than 50 years later. The doll is accompanied by an ad for the doll that touts, "Only doll of its kind approved by Elvis Presley. The thrill of your lifetime! Now you can have 'Elvis Presley' for YOURSELF! He'll be your companion - morning, noon and night time, too!" The ad includes a mail-in coupon to receive the doll for only $3.98. The doll is sought after by collectors and in this condition it would be the pinnacle of any collection. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The doll measures approximately 18 inches (45.72 cm) in height and the box measures approximately 18 1/2 by 6 3/4 by 3 3/4 inches (46.99 x 17.145 x 9.525 cm).

Condition Report: The doll is in amazing condition with only slight areas of dust/dirt and very minor wear from age. The shirt, pants, socks and shoes are in like new condition with the belt showing only slight wear in the center and side of the buckle. The belt end is held to the doll with a silver head pin. The head and face and body are in remarkable condition. The hands are in excellent condition with only very slight signs of wear in the "magic skin." The box is in remarkable original condition with a few areas of very minor paper loss and staining. The box top shows evidence of tape and glue residue where slight tears were mended over the years with areas of loss around the viewing window of the top exposing the basketweave printed pattern of the cardboard underneath. The overall condition of the doll and box is incredible given how few have survived in good condition much less at all.

1956 Elvis Presley Enterprises Scrapbook, Photo Album and Record Case

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: On any Elvis fan's must-have list would have been this pinkish-tan scrapbook, photo album and 45 RPM record case, each with a centered image of Elvis singing and playing guitar while standing on a record, plus images of two hearts, a hound dog and silhouette of the same Elvis image in circular discs to the left. Each is marked in raised black letters "Elvis Presley Scrap Book," "Elvis Presley Photo Album," and "Elvis Presley Record Case" respectively. The record case is the most rare and is stamped on the reverse "Copyright 1956 By Elvis Presley Enterprises All Rights Reserved," and on the spine in raised black letters "Record Case" with a guitar, record and two white musical notes. The scrapbook is inscribed on the interior cover, "To Ginny on her 14th Birthday December 25, 1956 From your three sisters Dorotha, Mary and Sally" and is filled with newspaper clippings, magazine cutouts and the dreams of a 14-year-old girl who collected everything related to Elvis in the late '50s. She dedicated only one page to "Other singin & movie stars (1957-58)," which includes Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson. Otherwise every available space is dedicated to the king himself. A true time capsule of Elvis-related press of the day. The photo album and record case remain like new. The scrapbook and photo album have a string tie binding while the record case has a snap closure. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The scrapbook measures approximately 14 1/2 by 12 inches (36.83 x 30.48 cm), the photo album measures approximately 10 by 14 inches (25.4 x 35.56 cm) and the record case measures approximately 7 5/8 by 7 5/8 by 2 1/4 inches (19.37 x 19.37 x 5.71 cm).

Condition Report: The scrapbook is in fair condition, with tape down the front left binding to keep the cover in place. The scrapbook was well loved and cherished by Ginny for many years and shows signs of good use. The photo album and record case are in excellent condition with like-new, albeit slightly faded, pages in the photo album, and the record case exhibits signs of wear to the top left side edge and some creases to the snap area, otherwise it is in like-new condition.

1958 Elvis Presley Signed Fort Hood Stationery - Signed While in Basic Training

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: The offered 1958 Elvis Presley signature on Fort Hood stationery is incredibly rare, since Elvis' time in basic training was a period in which he was going out of his way to be a regular recruit. The ivory-toned stationery with green lettering from "Telephone Center Fort Hood, Texas" contains a bold Elvis Presley signature in pencil under the script "Thanks," both of which have been written upside down in relation to the letterhead. The stationery has emblems of swords and guns in green in the upper corners. The stationery has been folded in half and stapled to black paper at the left twice and right center edge. On the front, written in white, appears "June 1958" and on the reverse, also written in white, is "Pamphlet of Sept 58," "Honeymoon" vertically down the center and "Airplane" along the right. A ghost inscription and signature appears as a mirror image of the strong inscription and signature, which resulted from the slight transfer of ink when the page was folded. Rarely did Elvis exhibit typical celebrity behavior during his early military service, making this signature on Fort Hood stationery an extraordinary example. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The folded stationery measures approximately 5 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches (13.33 x 19.05 cm).

Condition Report: The top edge of the stationery shows wear and discoloration with very slight tears. A pink discoloration appears to flow into the entire height of the stationery from the right side, but does not affect the signature. The staples have slightly rusted and markings from previously removed staples exist. The stationery has center fold marks and a slight hole in the paper to the left center edge.

1959 Elvis Presley's U.S. Army Issue Sewing Kit

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: Offered is Elvis' U.S. Army issue Sewing Kit. This army green, rectangular, cardboard box has a coated canvas flap cover and snap closure. The cover is embossed with "U.S. Army" over the Army seal and "Sewing Kit" underneath. Below the embossing is stamped in red ink "SP1 Elvis Presley - US53310761, 1st Med Tank Bat. 32nd ARMOR 3RD DIV, APO 33 PM N.Y. N.Y." The interior brown cardboard is stamped in red at the bottom "PRESLEY ELVIS A, US 53 310 761 SGT USAR, C/O MR VERNON PRESLEY, 14 GOETHE STRASSE, BAD NAUHEIM GERMANY." The kit contains a flat, cardboard spool of Republic army green, wool, yarn-type thread; two small star bobbin style spools in light green and white made by American Thread Co.; a small forged steel pair of scissors; and a marbled, lavender thimble. The inside cover is lined in green felt and contains a safety pin, two sewing needles, one wool thread needle with a strand of black wool still threaded through the eye, two flathead pins and two ball head pins. This incredible memento from Elvis' army days is accompanied by a black-and-white photograph which depicts a dress-uniform-clad Elvis appearing to sew his daily Army fatigues. The photo is stamped on the reverse, "Copyright Notice, Not To Be Reproduced Without Written Consent Under Penalty Of Law. Jimmy Velvet, President, Elvis Presley Museum." The look of concentration on Elvis' face gives the impression that he is concentrating intently on making this repair. One could almost hear Elvis thinking "I don’t sew like nobody." Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The photo measures approximately 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm) and the sewing kit measures approximately 5 1/4 by 3 1/4 by 1 inch (13.33 x 8.25 x 2.54 cm).

Condition Report: The photograph is in excellent, like new condition. The sewing kit exhibits heavy signs of use and age. The coated canvas is cracked along the edges and bends, and the front cover shows dirt and stains with one small circular area of wear. The red stamp on the cover is faded so that only portions are legible. The green on the edges of the cardboard is worn away. The back right corner is split. The sides show scratches in the outer layer. The bottom has deeper scratches and dark areas of residue. The interior is in very good, complete condition. The safety pin and scissors show signs of tarnish and corrosion. The spool and bobbins are in excellent condition. The thimble has a hairline crack and is slightly bent out of shape. The snap closure is corroded. Despite the minor condition issues, which are simply from age and use, given the fragile nature of the construction, the kit is in remarkably good condition overall.

Early 1960s Graceland Security Guard Shirt Worn by Elvis Presley's Uncle Travis Smith

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: Offered is a blue short-sleeve button-down shirt with "E" elaborately embroidered on the right breast and "P" on the left. The shirt has a collar tag which indicates "Memphis Uniform Co, Memphis Tennessee." This shirt was acquired by longtime Presley fan and close friend Donna Lewis who was gifted this shirt by Elvis' uncle (his mother Gladys' brother) Travis Smith. Uncle Travis worked for Elvis as a security guard at Graceland and the Circle G Ranch. He befriended the Lewis family and would often have them to dinner. He also took the Lewis family to the fairgrounds where they met Elvis for the first time. Travis began working as a gate guard when Elvis moved to Graceland, and the lot includes a copy of a black-and-white photo of Travis wearing the offered shirt while standing at the Graceland pool, which dates the photo to after June of 1957, since that was the date of the installation of the pool. Photographs of Uncle Travis wearing similar style shirts with the initials "E" and "P" at the gates of Graceland also exist. Elvis' family was of paramount importance to Elvis; he employed and cared for many members of his extended family throughout the years and Uncle Travis and his wife and sons were certainly no exception. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Condition Report: The shirt is faded and shows signs of being well worn with stains on the front overall. There is a tear near the shoulder seam on the right sleeve. There is a green line on the collar and the edge of the collar is stained and worn on the edges. The collar tag is frayed at the edges. The embroidered initials are discolored with a small gap on the "P."
