Ilias Lalaounis nacque ad Atene nel 1920 da una famiglia di orafi di Delfi. Dopo aver conseguito la laurea in economia all'università di Atene, decise di affiancare lo zio e imparare i segreti del mestiere di orafo. Negli anni Quaranta prese le redini dell'attività di famiglia e, traendo ispirazione dall'archeologia greca, delineò il nuovo profilo dei suoi gioielli. Cominciò così la creazione di gioielli ricchi di significato simbolico e storico, impreziositi grazie all'utilizzo di tecniche arcaiche e quasi dimenticate in terra ellenica, quali la microgranulazione e la filigrana. Lalaounis fondò la Greek Jeweler's Association ed nel 1957 espose la sua prima collezione, la "archeological collection", ispirata all'arte micenea, classica ed ellenistica. Seguirono poi altre collezioni che traevano ispirazione anche dall'arte persiana e bizantina. Il suo successo fu repentino e negli anni Settanta egli aprì boutique in tutta Europa, Asia ed America. Egli fu il primo orafo celebrato dall'Academie des Beaux Arts e Lettres per il suo contributo alla creazione dell'arte orafa. Nel 1993 Ilias Lalaounis fondò ad Atene il Lalaounis Jewellery Museum, l'unico museo dedicato all'arte della gioielleria. Oltre ai gioielli disegnati da Ilias Lalaounis e ispirati ai vari periodi ed eventi storici, il museo mette in mostra la collezione privata di Lalaounis e parti di altre collezioni private (micro-sculture e gioielli).
