Sydney, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD800 - AUD1,200

Description: An Old War Shield, Simbai, Provenance: Allan D Christensen Collection no CC60612 Collected by Philip Goldman, Allen D. and Carmen M. Christensen founded The Christensen Fund as a private foundation in California in 1957. Allen, who was a civil and mining engineer, served as president of the Utah Mining and Construction Company for many years. Beginning in the early 1970s, The Christensen Fund added to its various mostly San Francisco Bay Area-based charitable and educational activities the acquisition of fine arts and ethnographic artefacts. Its first art collection was a group of Pomo Indian baskets that are now at Harvard University's Peabody Museum. From 1972 to 1999 the fund was a private operating foundation, its operations being the collection and loan of as many as 35,000 pieces of what it then called "Non-Western Art" to major museums for their study and exhibition in Australia, Europe and the United States. 96 x 58cm

Shona Stone

Denver, CO, USA

Estimated Price: $7,500 - $8,500

Description: Shona Stone Sculpture "Bird and Retreat" John Takawira Additional Information: A tactile piece signed by the great John Takawira (1938- 1989), a First Generation Shona stone sculptor. Until the middle of the 20th century, with the notable exception of the famous birds carved in steatite, there was very little sculpture of any kind in Zimbabwe. It was not until the 1950s that the stone sculpture movement was born, a movement which would change the face of contemporary African art. In 1957, Frank McEwen, an Englishman, and a teacher, collector and exhibitor of modern art, was appointed Director of the National Gallery of Rhodesia, in Salisbury (now Harare). Soon after taking the position, McEwen began to make connections with talented local artists whom he supported and mentored. He encouraged them to find creative inspiration in their traditional religions and spirituality. In addition to what was taking place at the National Gallery, a workshop was created in Vukutu in Nyanga district, headed by Joram Mariga, an agricultural engineer turned sculptor. Mariga was the uncle of John and Bernard Takawira, and he taught both his nephews and many other young men who would become the famous First Generation of Zimbabwe Stone culptors. Sandra Kerno, the collector from whom we acquired this piece, says: "The John Takawira pieces were of special note as he left a sick bed to make a special appearance for us, and he passed away the next year.  It was in 1986 when we met and he explained each piece to me.  The Birth and Retreat baby bird is quite different from any other as it is the most tactile piece among all the Shona art.  For J. Tak. to have carved in such a way as to be able to actually 'cuddle' it is amazing.  Whoever heard of cuddling a piece of stone?   Just to hold and view every aspect is to appreciate the artistry and spiritual concept behind its' conception.  He explained the birth process and post birth reaction of a newborn.... 'Each living being comes into the world knowing nothing, and reacts with some hesitation and wonder at the new surroundings, therefore it retreats into itself while waiting for protection from the mother,' i.e. it dare not stick its neck out before knowing it is safe!" Mubaiwa (1960- ) known as "life", late First Generation Zimbabwe stone sculptor. Until the middle of the 20th century, with the notable exception of the famous birds carved in steatite, there was very little sculpture of any kind in Zimbabwe. It was not until the 1950s that the stone sculpture movement was born, a movement which would change the face of contemporary African art. Mubaiwa belongs to the late First Generation or to the Second Generation. Mubaiwa was born in 1960 in the Nyanga Mountains of Zimbabwe, bordering Mozambique. He attributes most of his spiritual inspiration to his mountain homeland. He began sculpting in 1982 under the guidance of Luke and Frances Mugavazi and Brighton Sango. He especially enjoys carving tall ancestor spirits with tranquil eyes and restful faces. His works have been shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, San Diego, Tokyo and London.   Mubaiwa is still sculpting in Guruve under the "taken" name of "Life."  The Mermaid, a beautiful half-woman half-fish, is also known in Africa as "Mami Wata," the spirit of water, and is a very famous subject in the sculpture of Zimbabwe and other African countries. Description: Shona Stone Sculpture "Listening Man" A. Mamvura Provenance: Sandra Kerno Collection  Additional Information: Signed by Albert Mamvura (1945-1995), a First Generation Zimbabwe stone sculptor who worked in Chitungwiza. Until the middle of the 20th century, with the notable exception of the famous birds carved in steatite, there was very little sculpture of any kind in Zimbabwe. It was not until the 1950s that the stone sculpture movement was born, a movement which would change the face of contemporary African art. Albert Nathan Mamvura was born in 1954, in the Buhera district of Zimbabwe. After leaving school, Mamvura worked as a carpenter in Chitungwiza before striking out to begin carving on his own, in 1977. A year later, Mamvura’s works were accepted by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe for its annual exhibition.  Since then Mamvura has been counted among the most talented of all Shona sculptors. His works focus on the human figure, with a tendency toward abstraction. "Listening Man"is made from green serpentine stone, Mamvura's favorite medium. As can be seen in this piece, Mamvura's works are usually figurative and depict human forms in serene or contemplative attitude, reflecting the Shona spirituality that Mamvura believed in. Asafo Flag Fante Appliquéd African Ghana

by Africa Direct

August 25, 2015, 1:00 AM MST

Denver, CO, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $550

Description: Among the Fante people of coastal Ghana military companies known as Asafo, began in the past as groups to which men and in some instances women could belong. Most Fante coastal towns had at least one company and larger towns up to ten or fourteen leading to rivalries and conflicts. These companies were politically engaged in the selection of chiefs and identified religiously to their particular military shrine (pousban) that served as a gathering place and centers of activity for these Asafo companies. Each local company is identified by a particular name and number and through a set of symbols displayed prominently on their flags. Commenting upon Asafo flags (frankaa) in the late 17th century Europeans noted the distinct imagery of the flags. These motifs served to identify the Asafo company by giving visual form to the creed by which it wished to be known. Proverbs are given imaginative forms by different colored cutout figures appliquéd upon cotton square approximately a meter by a meter and a half in size and the cloth was generally produced in European weaving mills.Asafo flags have a rough system that can be used to define the date of origin with the British ensign, the "Union Jack", often featured on flags before Ghana achieved independence in 1957. Asafo flags with the Ghanaian ensign in one of the corners indicate that the flag was put together post-independence and thereby after 1957. Much of Asafo flag imagery plays upon traditional proverbs, double meanings and subtle references to local histories and personalities. However there are times when it is difficult to interpret the visual representation due to hidden meanings and idiosyncratic communication. This may be the case in this flag. We do not recommend laundering textiles, and do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner.  Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles.  For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing  (NEVER MACHINE, on any setting)  in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears.Recommended Reading: Peter Adler and Nicholas Barnard, ASAFO! This effect bestows the photographs with a mysterious atmosphere. ‘Scanno’ is one of his most famous series that he gained international recognition with for the first time in 1963 at the Photokina in Cologne and in 1964 at the MoMA in New York.Condition:The photograph is signed and dated verso in pencil ‘Mario Giacomelli 1957’. Verso are the title stamp ‘Scanno’, the copyright stamp and numberings in pencil. The photograph is mounted verso on two edges with adhesive stripes reversible under a mat. The photograph is in very good condition. The photograph is 30.3 x 39.6 cm in size and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 48 x 57.5 cm.Mario Giacomelli (1925-2000)Mario Giacomelli was raised as the eldest of three brothers in Senigallia. His father died very early and to support the family he left school at the age of 13 to train as a typesetter and printer. He owned his own print shop where he worked his entire life and he photographed only in his leisure time. He worked mainly in series and the majority of his photographs show the closer environment of his hometown Senigallia. Therefore, he spent some time in each place so that the residents could get used to him. Only then he would take his camera along with him. In 1995, he received the Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie. (tm) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
