Baga Nimba (D'mba) Wooden Headdress

Lot 202: Baga Nimba (D'mba) Wooden Headdress

by Minerva Gallery

July 25, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $250,000 - $350,000

Description: BAGA D'MBA HEADDRESS, Republic of Guinea. The most important of the Baga art forms is the great mask, or Nimba. It represents the mother of fertility, protector of pregnant women, and presides over all agricultural ceremonies. The dancer, wearing a full raffia costume, carries the mask on his shoulders, looking out through holes between the breasts. In use, such masks rise more than eight feet above the ground; they often weigh more than eighty pounds. Most show a standardized pattern of facial scarification. This large, voluptuous form is perhaps most famous for a related D'mba owned by Pablo Picasso, believed to have been the formal inspiration for his sculptural and painted portrayals of his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. The female bust resting on four straight legs, the majestic head hairstyle consists of a ridge, braids and herringbone, aquiline nose topped with a bow in the front, the small cylindrical mouth, eyes bulging , protruding ears, scars into small squares on the outline of the face, chest and neck, two eyes open between the breasts. Beautiful ritual patination, dark and crusty. Measurements: 49-1/4" in height x 19" in width x 26-1/4" in length. Appraisal will be included from the Late Lowell Collins from Texas. Lowell Collins was an artist, teacher, appraiser and specialist in pre-Columbian and African art. He opened a private school and art gallery that bear his name. He showed the work of young regional artists, but over the decades his name and gallery became synonymous with pre-Columbian and tribal art. Collins' passion for the ancient art of Meso-America led to an appointment as honorary curator at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. He donated many ancient artifacts to the museum and was an expert appraiser in the field and lectured extensively. He mentions in the appraisal that the piece was ritually used and shows a nice ritual patination. For similar examples, see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1979.206.17) The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA 1957.97) The African Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institute (98-28-1) Yale University Art Gallery (2006.51.390), and Musée Picasso, Paris, from the collection of Pablo Picasso Art of The Baga: A Drama of Cultural Reinvention by Frederick Lamp (Museum for African Art/Prestel).

Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted

Lot 6: Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted

by Chaucer Covers & Auctions

July 25, 2014, 5:00 PM GMT

Folkestone, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £4,000

Description: Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted. 3 x 2 inch irregularly cut signature piece professionally framed and mounted with b/w photo and biographical plaque. The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912), were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are credited[ with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. From 1905 to 1907, the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. The brothers' fundamental breakthrough was their invention of three-axis control, which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method became and remains standard on fixed-wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers focused on developing a reliable method of pilot control as the key to solving "the flying problem". This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time who put more emphasis on developing powerful engines. Using a small homebuilt wind tunnel, the Wrights also collected more accurate data than any before, enabling them to design and build wings and propellers that were more efficient than any before. Their first U.S. patent, 821,393, did not claim invention of a flying machine, but rather, the invention of a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated a flying machine's surfaces. They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice. From 1900 until their first powered flights in late 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests that also developed their skills as pilots. Their bicycle shop employee Charlie Taylor became an important part of the team, building their first airplane engine in close collaboration with the brothers. Good condition

250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

Lot 49: 250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

by Chaucer Covers & Auctions

July 25, 2014, 5:00 PM GMT

Folkestone, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £4,000 - £6,000

Description: Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book signed by 250 BOB pilots and aces. 80 are signed on the book pages and 170 on labels affixed throughout the book. Incredible collection of the brave pilots who save Britain from Invasion in 1941.Also inscribed by the author Ken Wynn. This is why the book is a unique one-off. The book was specifically published in 1990 to coincide with the historic 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. 'Operation Homecoming' brought many of 'The Few' living abroad back to Britain for the Anniversary and for various receptions - Maidstone - Bentley Priory - Biggin Hill - Buckingham Palace. It was a one-off LAST TIME 'The Few' would be gathered in such numbers. Collected by Playwright, Screenwriter & Film Producer Anthony Attard, who has detailed how this amazing item came to pass. In 1990, former WWII Typhoon pilot and aviation author John Golley, introduced me to the Redgrave Theatre, Farnham, Surrey, who wanted a new play written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain. I invited John to collaborate with me. The play was called 'Freedom To Forget,' and a Gala Performance in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund was held, by totally uncanny coincidence on the 31st October 1990. The 31st October 1940 is now officially remembered as the date the Battle of Britain ended. A number of 'The Few' who lived reasonably local to Farnham were able to attend the Gala Night performance. Over the course of 1990, being commissioned to write the play enabled me to meet so many of the 'Few' who had always been my heroes. Also, Wing Commander N.P.W. 'Pat' Hancock OBE DFC, then Secretary of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, forwarded letters I wrote to members of the Association and is how I obtained so many on labels. For every signature I received I made a donation to the B.O.B. Fighter Association to help with the financial cost of 'Operation Homecoming,' which brought so many of 'The Few' living overseas to the U.K., for the 50th Anniversary celebrations. The Czech and Pole signatories to this book were obtained at a reception held at Maidstone on Saturday 22nd September 1990. All of the other actual signatories were obtained when I was a guest at the Biggin Hill Air Show that same year, or by personal visit to their homes where I was privileged to hear their enthralling memories of the Battle of Britain. Not all the signatories replied either with a letter or by putting down their Squadron number. Some just sent back the labels duly signed. After twenty-two years now recording all the signatures, most I have still been able to identify. There are four signatures, as yet, I am unable to identify. by Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo

Estimated Price: €2,000 - €3,000

July 26, 2014, 3:00 PM CET

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Estimated Price: €3,000 - €4,000

Lot 105: DA VID AL FARO SIQUEIROS (1864-1974)

by Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo

July 26, 2014, 3:00 PM CET

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Estimated Price: €20,000 - €30,000

Description: DA VID AL FARO SIQUEIROS (1864-1974) Un personaje importante, circa 1957/58Acrylique sur panneau Signée en bas à droite 100 x 80 cmBibliographie Une attestation d'Adriana Siqueiros en date du 3 mars 2010 sera remise à l'acquéreur.

July 26, 2014, 3:00 PM CET

Estimated Price: €30,000 - €40,000

Estimated Price: €1,000,000 - €1,100,000

Description: LUCIO FONTANA (1899-1968) Concetto Spaziale, Attese, 1965/68Peinture à l'eau sur toile Signée et titré sur le revers «L.Fontana Concetto Spaziale Attese / Quando ritornerà la primavera andro a Comabbio Milano Sant'Erasmo Club d'Arte» 61 x 50 cmProvenance Galerie Pierre, Stockholm Dans les collections de l'actuel propriétaire depuis 40 ans. Bibliographie Enrico Crispolti, Lucio Fontana Catalogo Generale, Milan 1986, vol. I, n° 67T19, reproduit page 656. Lucio Fontana, in «Manifesto Bianco», 1946, Buenos Aires.
