An early and original Lichtenstein woodcut in black and white, with title printed in maroon. Rare. Kinney, Jr., at Press of the Times, Oberlin, Ohio): ?For a brief time in the late 1950s, Lichtenstein was a latecomer to the abstract expressionist style. This is visible in his last two prints of that decade. Both were made for ?Polemic,? a literary-art journal published by the student council at Adelbert College, Western Reserve University (now part of Case Western Reserve), in Cleveland, Ohio.? Warren Spahn Cut Signature Matted with a Photograph Certified by JSA James Spence Authentication

Lot 183: Warren Spahn Cut Signature Matted with a Photograph Certified by JSA James Spence Authentication

by Piedmont

July 26, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: JSA Warren Spahn cut signature matted with a Hall of Fame Postcard. This piece has a nice a blue on red double matting theme. Warren Edward Spahn (April 23, 1921 ? November 24, 2003) was an American Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher. He played his entire 21-year baseball career in the National League. He won 20 games or more in 13 seasons, including a 23?7 record when he was age 42. Spahn was the 1957 Cy Young Award winner, and was the runner-up three times, all during the period when just one award was given. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, with 83% of the total vote. (His eligibility was delayed, under the rules of the time, by two years of token minor league play.) Spahn won 363 games, more than any other left-handed pitcher in history, and more than any other pitcher who played his entire career in the post-1920 live-ball era. He is acknowledged as one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball history. The Warren Spahn Award, given to the major leagues' best left-handed pitcher, is named after him. Regarded as a "thinking man's" pitcher who liked to outwit batters, Spahn once described his approach on the mound: "Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing."

Hoyt Wilhelm Signed 8 x 10 Photograph

Lot 258: Hoyt Wilhelm Signed 8 x 10 Photograph

by Piedmont

July 26, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Hoyt Wilhelm Signed 8 x 10 Photograph. James Hoyt Wilhelm (July 26, 1922 ? August 23, 2002) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher. During his career, he pitched for the New York Giants (1952?1956), St. Louis Cardinals (1957), Cleveland Indians (1957?1958), Baltimore Orioles (1958?1962), Chicago White Sox (1963?1968), California Angels (1969), Atlanta Braves (1969?1970; 1971), Chicago Cubs (1970), and Los Angeles Dodgers (1971?1972). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.[1] Wilhelm was best known for his knuckleball, which enabled him to have great longevity; occasionally as a starting pitcher, but mainly as a specialist relief man (in which role he won 124 games, still the record for relief pitchers). He is recognized as the first pitcher to have saved 200 games in his career, and the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games. He is also one of the oldest players to have pitched in the major leagues; his final appearance was 16 days short of his 50th birthday. Wilhelm retired with the lowest career earned run average of any major league hurler after 1927 (Walter Johnson) who pitched more than 2,000 innings.

Description: Patrice Munsel Signed 8 x 10 Photograph. Munsel was born in Spokane, Washington, United States and studied in New York,[1] coached by Giacomo Spadoni. She first sang at the Metropolitan at age 17, in March 1943. She made her official Metropolitan debut on December 4, 1943, at the age of 18, singing Philine in Mignon. Perhaps best known for the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus, she performed 225 times at the Metropolitan. Sir Rudolf Bing called her a "superb soubrette" and implied that she was the world's best. Her opera roles included Rosina in The Barber of Seville and Despina in Cosi fan Tutte. In 1952 Munsel married Robert C. Schuler, an advertising and public-relations executive, producer and writer. The two were married for fifty-five years and had four children together: Heidi, Rhett, Scott and Nicole. Their marriage ended upon Schuler's death in 2007. Schuler conceived and produced the ABC-TV primetime variety series The Patrice Munsel Show, which starred his wife, and was broadcast on ABC in 1956?1957. Munsel and Schuler co-wrote a 2005 memoir of Schuler's life entitled The Diva & I. Munsel appeared on many other TV shows during her career, including the role of Marietta (Countess d'Altena) in the January 15, 1955 live telecast of the operetta "Naughty Marietta". She also portrayed the title role in the 1953 film Melba, which chronicled the life of the great opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba. Munsel made frequent television appearances on the Bell Telephone Hour, and was the central singer in the Camp Fire Girls' famous TV commercial and song "Sing Around the camp fire (join the Camp Fire Girls)", aired in the mid-1960s.

Will Rogers Signature Certified by Global Authentics GV728006

Lot 265: Will Rogers Signature Certified by Global Authentics GV728006

by Piedmont

July 26, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Will Rogers Signature Certified by Global Authentics GV728006. William Penn Adair "Will" Rogers (November 4, 1879 ? August 15, 1935) was an American cowboy, vaudeville performer, humorist, social commentator and motion picture actor. He was one of the world's best-known celebrities in the 1920s and 1930s. Known as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son," Rogers was born to a prominent Cherokee Nation family in Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). He traveled around the world three times, made 71 movies (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns, and became a world-famous figure. By the mid-1930s, the American people adored Rogers. He was the leading political wit of the Progressive Era, and was the top-paid Hollywood movie star at the time. Rogers died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post, when their small airplane crashed in Alaska. Rogers' vaudeville rope act led to success in the Ziegfeld Follies, which in turn led to the first of his many movie contracts. His 1920s syndicated newspaper column and his radio appearances increased his visibility and popularity. Rogers crusaded for aviation expansion, and provided Americans with first-hand accounts of his world travels. His earthy anecdotes and folksy style allowed him to poke fun at gangsters, prohibition, politicians, government programs, and a host of other controversial topics in a way that was appreciated by a national audience, with no one offended. His aphorisms, couched in humorous terms, were widely quoted: "I am not a member of an organized political party. I am a Democrat." Another widely quoted Will Rogers comment was "I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts." Rogers even provided an epigram on his most famous epigram: When I die, my epitaph, or whatever you call those signs on gravestones, is going to read: "I joked about every prominent man of my time, but I never met a man I dident [sic] like." I am so proud of that, I can hardly wait to die so it can be carved.
