A unique piece of Model Engineering History being the one inch scale...

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

September 23, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

Newbury, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10,000 - £15,000

Description: A unique piece of Model Engineering History being the one inch scale re-built model of the 4-6-2 tender Locomotive to Mr Harold C Trimnell s design under the influence of Henry Greenly in 1914, Built by Balwin & Wills. Illustrated and documented in Models Railways and Locomotives Volume 6 Page 286 January to December 1914 and Models Railways & Locomotives 1910 to 1916. Edited by Henry Greenly. (Both bound books being sold with this locomotive). This very early 5 inch gauge model was restored by Mr Richard Down of Hythe in Kent between 2007 and 2012 with a new Western Steam boiler fitted at that time. The boiler has subsequently only been test run since being installed. The silver soldered boiler with fittings including sight glass, pressure gauge, regulator, direction control, drains with associated pipework, lever operated drop door to firebox and fitted twin safety valves. The chassis has twin outside cylinders having drains and fitted with inside Stephenson s reverse gear, ratchet oiler system, whistle, injector and fitted brake gear. The locomotive is finished in crimson lined livery with cab - side plate 1914, fitted handrails, steps, lamp irons, vacuum hoses and linkages. The double bogie tender of Greenly design influence having fitted hand feed pump and finished in matching livery with fitted hand rails, steps, vacuum hose and linkage. Total model length 175cm. Cab width 22cm. * LOCOMOTIVE 1914 - A FINE HISTORIC 1in SCALE MODEL (5in Gauge) This 4-6-2 Pacific engine is probably the oldest working 5-inch gauge locomotive in the country, and it comes with a long and very interesting history. The loco was originally conceived and designed in 1911 as a pacific tank engine by a Mr. Harold C Trimnell, who arranged for Mr. C Baldwin of Camberwell to build the model. Exhibiting a very Greenly-esque look, details of the locomotive s construction, including photos and some drawings, were published in Henry Greenly s Models, Railways and Locomotives magazines in December 1912 and January 1913. It appears that Mr. Trimnell knew Henry Greenly personally. The original boiler was to a Greenly Bissell type design and the loco was fitted with Stephenson s inside valve motion. The 5½ driving and coupled wheels were Stuart Turner castings. The building of the loco to 5 gauge is unusual for the period, as virtually all 1in scale models utilized the 4¾ gauge at that time. On completion of the model, Henry Greenly visited Mr. Trimnell s railway and pronounced the locomotive to be a successful running engine capable of pulling 2 adults and running two actual miles on one firing. A later article stated that the running distance was 1½ to 1¾ miles, which was still very good for the time. After running the loco for 18 months or so, it appears that Mr Trimnell wanted a more powerful engine with increased water capacity so that the loco could haul more passengers and run for 2 miles. He therefore called on Henry Greenly for his help, and Greenly made a further visit to Mr. Trimnel s railway in 1914. This famous miniature locomotive man, to use his own words, roughed out a design for the rebuild of the engine, converting it to a tender pacific loco utilizing a large proportion of the original model including the frames and wheels. A new tender would be required and a large double bogie pattern was proposed by Greenly, similar to the current Caledonian Railway design used for the Dunalastair III locomotives. At about the same time, Henry Greenly had been designing the Bassett-Lowke 15 gauge Little Giant locomotive, and the tender and some of the features of the rebuild look very similar to this larger iconic miniature loco type. Further design drawings were prepared based on Greenly s specification, utilizing the front portion of the frames, and a new, larger Belpaire boiler with a wide firebox specified; also larger cylinders. A number of novelties were also incorporated, including working sanding apparatus. The rebuilding work was again undertaken by Mr. Baldwin, who by that time, had teamed up with a certain Mr. Willis to form the well-known model-making firm of the time, Baldwin and Willis . The end result was a sturdy, powerful locomotive, which was further described in Greenly s July and October 1914 editions of Models, Railways and Locomotives magazine. Two volumes of these magazines which include the relevant 1912, 13 & 14 magazines are included in the sale. When the present owner came across the loco in 2006, it had clearly done a lot of running, so it must have been a successful performer. Recognising this one-off engine from pictures in Greenly s Magazines and Model Railways Book, the present owner set about finding an engineer with the knowledge and skills to rebuild and refurbish the model to its original glory. Model Engineer, Richard Down was chosen to undertake this special task. A Greenly fanatic, Richard lives in Hythe, Kent, and in the past has played a key role in the repair and rebuilding of a number of the Greenly designed 15 gauge locomotives on the nearby Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. With his extensive knowledge of Greenly locomotives from a design, construction and finish viewpoint, Richard set about rebuilding the locomotive. This included fitting a new boiler manufactured by Western Steam to the same external dimensions as the original, but with improved steaming capacity. No monies were spared in achieving, as far as possible, the original condition of the locomotive and Richard also undertook the painting of the loco in a typical Bassett Lowke style, including the lining. On completion, the loco was test steamed, when it proved to be very powerful. It has not been used since, being retained as a prized exhibit to date by the present owner. This life of this 104-year old locomotive spans a link with the very earliest days of model railway engineering. The involvement of one of the best-known model engineers of that time in the evolution of this locomotive makes this model stand out as something quite special, whether it should be acquired as an iconic static exhibit or a useful working historic locomotive.

An exhibition award winning 5 inch gauge model of a London North Western...

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

September 23, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

Newbury, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £5,000 - £7,000

Description: An exhibition award winning 5 inch gauge model of a London North Western Railway Teutonic Class 2-2-2-0 tender locomotive No 1304 'Jeanie Deans', built by Mr David Roberts of Eccles.Manchester. The silver soldered copper boiler fitted with stainless steel radiant superheaters, water feed via two injectors feeding into backhead check valves, which is as fitted to the full size locomotives. Fittings including water sight gauge, normal on the LNW, regulator, whistle fitted high near the cab roof, screw reverser controls as per the high pressure engines, the low pressure cylinder is fitted with slip eccentric gear which cannot be reversed by the driver when stationary. Chassis having three cylinders fitted with inverted Joy valve gear , high pressure cylinders 1 3/16th diameter by 2 1/8 in stroke.Low pressure cylinder 2 5/8th diameter by 2 1/8th stroke. Cylinder lubrication is by a double ram oscillating pump underneath the engine, with separate feeds to the high pressure steam chests. The oil tank is filled by a pipe on the left hand side. There is in addition provision for oiling the HP cylinders by removing the screw over the cylinders. The low pressure piston can be lubricated by oiling down the blast pipe, this valve being of the balanced type. The tender is of timber framed construction, the timbers joined by steel angles; an archaic method by 1890, but used on all Webb's tenders. The draw is transmitted from the loco by two steel rods to the rear hook to avoid strains on the woodwork . The locomotive finely finished with fitted hand rails, steps and lamp irons. -360-334 Awards: The locomotive was awarded Second Prize at the Midlands Exhibition, 1996, and a Silver Medal at the Model Engineer Exhibition, Olympia, in December 1998 . * Original full size Locomotive history: LONDON & NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY 3-Cylinder Compound Express Passenger Locomotive 'Jeanie Deans 'Teutonic" Class. -360-334 The old London & North Western had ten of these engines. They were built at the company s Crewe Works in 1889-90 under the direction of Francis Webb, Chief Mechanical Engineer and were modified versions of the earlier Dreadnought class. -360 The engines used Webb s system of compounding, in which steam from the boiler passes to the two outside cylinders, driving the back wheels. The exhaust passes to a single cylinder driving the centre axle. The axles were not coupled so all the initial starting effort was provided by the back wheels and, in addition the low pressure cylinder was fitted with a slip eccentric and could not be reversed from the cab, making the engines notoriously bad starters. -360-334 Despite their faults, the Teutonics are regarded as the best of Webb s 3-cylinder compounds and hauled many of the North-Western s principal expresses throughout the eighteen-nineties. After Webb s retirement in 1903 his successor quickly scrapped these engines. Jeanie Deans was broken up in 1906. * Jeanie Deans is the heroine of Sir Walter Scott s novel Heart of Midlothian , the engine being exhibited in Edinburgh in 1890. -360-334

Whilst the engine has spent much of its life on display, it was built as a running model and has proved a fine performer on the track - its last outing was in July of this year at the Echills Wood Railway's "Standard Gauge Weekend" event. Built as one of a legendary pair, her sister locomotive is in a private collection in Switzerland. * The British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for British Railways by Robert Riddles. The Class 9F was the last in a series of standardized locomotive classes designed for British Railways during the 1950s, and was intended for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. The class earned a nickname of 'Spaceships', due to its size and shape. At various times during the 1950s the 9Fs worked passenger trains with great success, indicating the versatility of the design, sometimes considered to represent the ultimate in British steam development. Several experimental variants were constructed in an effort to reduce costs and maintenance, although these met with varying degrees of success. The total number built was 251, production being shared between Swindon (53) and Crewe Works (198). The last of the class, 92220 Evening Star , was the final steam locomotive to be built by British Railways, in 1960. Withdrawals began in 1964, with the final locomotives removed from service in 1968. Several examples have survived into the preservation era in varying states of repair, including Evening Star .
