Ernst R. Zimmermann, Portrait 'Bavarian Boy', around 1920

Lot 44: Ernst R. Zimmermann, Portrait 'Bavarian Boy', around 1920

by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €480 - €600

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, around 1920 Ernst Reinhard Zimmermann (1881-1939) - Munich artist Signed and monogrammed upper left Portrait of a boy in traditional Bavarian costume Dimensions: 46 x 36.5 cm (height x width) This portrait shows a boy with blond hair and chubby cheeks, wearing a white shirt and the traditional Bavarian costume of some leather trousers. It was painted by Ernst Reinhard Zimmermann (1881-1939), who was a quite popular artist in Munich at the beginning of the 20th century. The face of the child was painted with pastose layers of colour, whereas its clothes and hair are indicated with bold brushstrokes. It becomes clear, that it was the painter's intention to depict the boy as realistic as possible, without losing the untroubled attitude of a children's mind. The painting is in an appealing condition with usual signs of use and age. At the forehead of the boy, there is a small restoration, which does however not affect the good impression of the portrait. At the back side, the described position of the restoration is supported by a small piece of canvas. There are minor faming marks at the edges. The painting is signed and monogrammed at the upper left. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 46 x 36.5 cm. Ernst Reinhard Zimmermann (1881-1939) The artist Ernst Reinhard Zimmermann comes from a well-known Munich familiy of artists. He was born in 1881 as the son of Karl Georg Zimmermann, a practicing painter himself. Therefore, Ernst Reinhard Zimmermann started his training at his father's studio and attended the Munich School of Crafts afterwards. As an established artist, he became a member of the 'Münchener Künstlergenossenschaft' and of the Secession, too. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Willy Semm, Painting, Madonna with Christ and St. John, 1943

Lot 62: Willy Semm, Painting, Madonna with Christ and St. John, 1943

by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,280 - €1,600

Description: Oil on cardboard Germany, 1943 Willy Semm (1888-1964) - German painter and graphic artist of the Lost Generation Signed and dated 'Willy Semm 43' upper left In silvered wooden frame Dimensions: 40.7 x 37.7 cm Modern Madonna depiction in an expressive manner A painter of the Lost Generation, the Leipzig painter and graphic artist Willy Semm (1888-1964) belonged to the expressionists of the second generation. In the Third Reich classified as 'degenerate', the works of this generation are very popular today. The present oil painting by Semm shows the Madonna with the Child in her arms and the boy St. John behind her. In her hand, she holds a flower, a Marian icon. The head of the Madonna and her long neck is reminiscent of representations of the Italian Renaissance artist Parmigianino, for instance the 'Madonna della Rosa' from 1530, now in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie. The painting is signed and dated 'Willy Semm 43' upper left. It is mounted in a silver wooden frame and overall in good condition considering its age. The cardboard is slightly warped. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching along the edges and some small touch-ups within the depiction. The image dimensions are 40.7 x 37,7 cm, and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 47.3 x 43.1 cm.Willy Semm (1888-1964) Willy Semm was active as a painter and graphic artist in Leipzig. He studied with Walter Tiemann at the local Academy and then in Berlin with Emil Orlik. Until his death, he was a freelance artist in Leipzig. His favorite subjects were female nude representations, forest and riparian landscapes, city views and flower still lifes in an expressive manner. Panel Painting, Madonna With Child, Europe, Early 20th Century

Lot 150: Panel Painting, Madonna With Child, Europe, Early 20th Century

by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €480 - €600

Description: Tempera on wood East Europe, early 20th century Richly decorated depiction in the manner of Russian and Byzantine icons Dimensions, framed: 42 x 33 cm Dimensions of panel: 39 x 27.5 cm Good condition This depiction resembles a Russian or Byzantine icon. However it was presumably painted in East Europe in the early 20th century. It shows the Virgin Mary as Hodegetria, 'the one who shows the way'. She points at her child, who is sitting on her right arm, indicating the passion. Jesus is looking at his mother and holds a bird in his right hand. In many pictures of the Virgin and Child, Jesus is portrayed holding a bird in his hand. It is an allusion to his death and resurrection. On the reverse the panel is stabilized with horizontal and vertical struts. The picture shows signs of age and wear. The edges show color flaking where the frame has rubbed and the surface shows craquelure in places. Touch-ups seem to have been applied on the area of the figures, while the background presumably still has its original appearance. The gold-plated frame is heavily chipped and scratched. The framed dimensions are 42 x 33 cm, while the panel itself measures 39 x 27.5 cm. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. by Auctionata

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €4,000 - €5,000

Description: Oil on canvas, laid down on hardboardMorocco, late 20th century Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - Moroccan painter, printmaker and sculptor Signed with 'Drissi' in Arabic and script lower rightDimensions: 58.2 x 40.5 cmGood condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Mohamed Drissi is one of the most important artists of Morocco; his paintings have sold for up to €90,000 at international auctionsThe abstract-expressive painting by Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) shows a naked woman with a child in her arms executed in the artist's characteristic reduced and symbolic style of painting. Black contour lines, deformed body parts and mask-like faces determine the two figures. Drissi was keen to capture all emotional facets of human existence in all its poignancy. He lined up in an art historical tradition that had broken ground with the works of the German Expressionists. The painting is signed with 'Drissi' in Arabic and script lower right. It is in good condition, showing some soiling to the paint surface and wear affecting the frame. The overall dimensions are 60 x 42 cm, and the hardboard measures 58.2 x 40.5 cm.Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003)Mohamed Drissi was born in the Moroccan city of Tétouan in 1946 and is considered one of the most original painters of his generation. He studied art in Tétouan, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels and New York. His favorite subject was the 'human being' and especially the taboo topic of prostitution. In this context, Drissi painted a colorful variety of abstract-expressive paintings of mostly androgynous women's bodies and mask-like heads. However, the faces of Drissi's figures reflect the full range of human emotions, which are enhanced by the postures and gestures. The expressive power in Drissi's works is reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The works of Egon Schiele and Edward Munch are also brought to mind.Drissi's works fetch record prices at international auctions. The Gallery Mohamed Drissi in Tangier, a contemporary art museum, presents some of his works. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
