AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER IS GIVEN A PUBLIC DEFENDER

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER IS GIVEN A PUBLIC DEFENDER ALBERT FISH (1870 - 1936) American serial killer, child rapist and cannibal who boasted that he "had children in every state", and at one time stated the number was about 100. He was a suspect in at least five murders during his lifetime and confessed to three murders that police were able to trace to a known homicide. Fish was finally put on trial for the kidnapping and murder of Grace Budd, and was convicted and executed by electric chair. Important D.S. signed by Judge William P. Bleakley, 1p legal folio, White Plains, NY, Feb. 6, 1935. Bleakley appoints a public defender to represent the notorious murderer in court. In part: "...Albert H. Fish is without counsel for his defense to the indictment charging him with the crime of murder in the first degree...he is without means or property...ORDERED that James Dempsey, Jr....is assigned as counsel...". Fine. Fish's pleaded insanity, without success, being found guilty after ten days. He was recorded to have said that electrocution would be "the supreme thrill of my life". Just before the switch was flipped, he stated "I don't even know why I am here." Legend has it that his execution took longer due to the numerous needles inserted into his privates which disrupted the flow of electricity.

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $600

Description: THEODORE "TED" BUNDY (1946 - 1989) American serial killer who left up to 28 women dead across the states of Washington, Utah, Colorado, and finally Florida where he was convicted of double murder in the notorious "Chi Omega" sorority murders. Despite having twice escaped jail, Bundy was finally unable to escape conviction and the Florida electric chair. Important self-typed D.S. "Theodore Robert Bundy", 1p. legal folio, [Leon Co., about May 31, 1979]. An Illustration to the Bhagavata Purana Book 10, c. 1640

by Auctionata US

July 9, 2015, 1:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Opaque watercolors on natural buff paperPopular Mughal at Mewar, c. 164017 lines of black and red ink devanagari scriptVerso: lines of ink textFolio dimensions (height x width):9 1/8 x 16 in. (23.2 x 40.6 cm)Image dimensions (height x width): 7 x 13 1/4 in. (17.8 x 33.7 cm) Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: $2,000-$3,000Two rishis bless the infant Krishna held by Yashoda. The lines of text surrounding the illustration of the holymen dressed in white dhotis - the new-born infant Krishna at the breast of his foster mother Yashoda. Depicted against a flat green ground. The reverse side containing text only - an unusual feature of our folio - given that the vast majority of leaves contain double-sided illustrations.A folio from a well-known and widely dispersed manuscript illustrating episodes of the Bhagavata Purana Book 10 recounting the tales and exploits of Krishna as a small child (as in the present example) and as an adult. The illustrations are executed in an early phase of Rajasthani painting and most likely from Mewar soon after contact with Mughal influence. Thus the illustrations may be considered Popular Mughal, of Mewar origin, although the specific site near Udaipur is yet to be determined. The series also contains numerous archaic pre-Mughal conventions (ie compartmentalization in primary colors, flattened architectural elements and other features) similar to those found in Kalpasutra, “Chaurapanchasika” and Malwa paintings. Discovery of this series in the 1970ʼs helped to define a pivotal period in Rajasthani style increasingly influenced by Mughal naturalism.Folios from this widely dispersed series are held in numerous public and private collections worldwide. See: Mason D. et al. “Intimate Worlds: Indian Paintings from the Alvin O. Bellak Collection” Philadelphia 2001 cat. 19, pps.68-69. A. Poster, “Realms of Heroism” Brooklyn Museum 1994 Cat. 154-155 pps 201-202. Metropolitan Museum of Art New York (Accession Number): 1980.527.2bCondition:Having small tears and minor losses around the edges of the paper. A few minor stains and scattered minor paint spatter. Having minor pigment losses around the yellow border, and wear around the edges of the folio. The reverse with old tape affixed, and pen notations. Professionally matted.
