Osamu Nakajima, serpentine sculpture

Lot 108: Osamu Nakajima, serpentine sculpture

by Jahn Gallery

April 12, 2015, 8:00 PM GMT

Wien, Austria

Estimated Price: €1,000 - €1,600

Description: Osamu Nakajima serpentine sculpture with base: 9.1 x 16 x 2.4 inch without base: 15.8 x 6.1 x 1.1 inch Osamu Nakajima (born 1937 in Nagasaki, Japan) More than 40 years ago the Asian sculptor Osamu Nakajima came to Gusen, Upper Austria, which means in Japanese language "by chance" and settled there. His sculptors can now be seen in most of the famous international museums. They belong to the first abstract works of art presented in public view in Upper Austria and Vienna. One example is the fountain sculptor for the town hall in Linz, in 1985. Nakajima belongs to those sculptors whose art work presents itself completely abstract, without any inspiration through nature or orientation through a person or an event. His sculptures are often compared with the Japanese short poems, Haikus. While Nakajima finds the quarry as his atelier, he sees in his work the realisation of the forms he sees in his dreams.

Description: JACQUES PAYETTE TROIS AUTRES SOULIER encaustic on canvas mounted to boardsigned, titled and dated 1996 on the reverse 48 ins x 29 ins; 121.9 cms x 73.7 cms Provenance:Charles Bronfman's Claridge Collection, MontrealNote:Sold to benefit Historica Canada. The work of Jacques Payette is characterized by its quiet and moody ambience with layers of encaustic paint, creating rich transparent colour for a dream-like effect. Together these attributes convey Payette's timeless interpretation of history and historical objects, introducing us to the artist's personal world. Payette is known for his portraits, but frequently his work includes articles and costumes from the 18th and 19th centuries for which he holds a fascination. Trois Autres Soulier (1996) depicts three Victorian inspired dress shoes, stacked as if on display. The work is meant to arouse nostalgia in the viewer, as these recognizable objects display their historical narrative.Born in Montréal, Québec, where he continues to live and work, self-taught artist Jacques Payette held his first solo exhibition in 1974 at the Laurent Tremblay gallery in Montréal. Payette's work is included internationally in private collections, and is featured in multiple collections across Canada such as the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Québec City); Musée d'art Joliette (Joliette, QC); Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the Art Bank of the Canada Council for the Arts (Ottawa), among others. In 2011, the Musée des beaux-arts in Montréal held a retrospective exhibition of Payette's career entitled Capturer le temps.

DE NIVERVILLE" on the reverse 32 ins x 35 ins; 81.3 cms x 88.9 cms Provenance:Canadian Fine Arts, TorontoLiterature:De Niverville, Louis. Saatchi Art. Accessed March 07, 2015. http://www.saatchiart.com/louisdeniverville.Note:A self-taught artist, Louis de Niverville worked as a graphic designer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto which led him to develop a formidable technique, particularly with collage. His work is characterized by fresh and provocative imagery, a world in which fantasy and nightmare collide. The visionary world of de Niverville appears in the mixed media composition Desert Holiday, where multiple characters are illustrated in a vibrant scene al fresco. The work's two-dimensionality and abundance of texture create an engaging dream world that is simultaneously static as if frozen in time. Louis de Niverville has been exhibiting across Canada and the United States since the mid-1980s. He has worked on many commissions and murals including the Bentall Centre (Vancouver), a mural for the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto Transit Commission, among others. by Holabird Western Americana

April 17, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $1,000

Description: Measures 40" H x 35" W. The totem is cedar, with black, red and blue paint still on, but faded. Carved on back side with "P" in three places. Native American Animal Totems are emblems of tribes or groups of people such as a family or clan. Animal totems or emblems, also reflect the lineage of a tribe, reminding them of their ancestry or their mythical past and creation myths. The word totem is derived from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) word 'odoodem' meaning "his kinship group". Many tribes also hold the belief that each of their people have animal totems that are spirit guides who sometimes appear in dreams or Vision Quests in the form of Power Animals and their dream meanings. These animal totems, or spirit guides walk through life with them, teaching and guiding them and in some instances, protecting them. An Animal Spirit is strongly associated with the Native American Indian belief in Animism that is a belief based on the spiritual idea that the universe, and all natural objects within the universe, have souls or spirits. An animal spirit is believed to be a supernatural power that embodies, attaches or conveys influence empowering a person with the trait of the animal. This totem appears to depict an owl--Deception, clairvoyance, insight, messenger, and a Monkey--Ability to change the environment, health, success. City: State: Alaska, Circa:

Carl Kauba, Bronze 'Bow Shooting Native American', c. 1950

Lot 20: Carl Kauba, Bronze 'Bow Shooting Native American', c. 1950

by Auctionata AG

April 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €200 - €240

Description: Cold-painted bronze Austria, around 1950 - or somewhat later Carl Kauba (1865-1822) - Viennese sculptor Signed 'C. Kauba' and marked 'AUSTRIA' on the plinth Dynamic figure of a bow shooting Native American Dimensions: 8 x 10.8 x 6.4 cm (height x width x depth) Very good condition Provenance: from the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna An original bronze by the famous Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba; one of the greatest portraitists of the American West Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.This elaborately crafted bronze originates from the famous Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba, who created many designs for the Bronze foundry Bergmann. In a dynamic way, the bronze depicts a Native American, who is just about to shoot an arrow with a bow. He is leaning forward on his knee, highly concentrated targeting with his bow to his left. Especially finely executed is the thin thread of the bow, which was originally made of animal tendons. The Native Americans of the Wild West used arrow and bow for hunting purposes and as a weapon. The bronze is in very good condition with slight traces of wear. It is signed 'C. Kauba' and marked 'AUSTRIA' on the plinth in the cast. The dimensions, including the plinth, are 8 x 10.8 x 6.4 cm (height x width x depth). Vienna Bronze The term 'Vienna Bronze' refers to very fine cast bronzes from the period of around 1880 to 1930. The very naturalistic small sculptures depict human figures, often with exotic features, humans and animals, humorous illustrations as well as erotica. The bronzes were so fashionable that there were 80 companies in Vienna, which concentrated on these products. A large number of significant artistic works was melted during the world wars to meet the metal needs of the artillery, thus the bronzes are now not only treasures but rare collectibles. Carl Kauba (1865-1922) The Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba attended the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Laufenberg, Waschmann and Schwartz. He later continued his education in Paris. Kauba's polychrome, very detailed and realistic sculptures make him one of the leading 'Viennese bronze' artists. Fascinated by the adventure novels by the German author Karl May (1842-1912), his expressive illustrations mostly show Wild West motifs, like cowboys and Native Americans. His representation of American Indian headdresses, weapons and costumes were rendered with great attention to detail. There is no evidence that Kauba himself has ever been to America. Carl Kauba personally directed the casting of his clay models. Most bronzes from the years 1895 to 1912 were produced for the U.S. market, where they were offered in New York until the 1950s. Today collectors rank Kauba in the same league as Frederic Remington (1961-1909) and Charles Russell (1864-1926), the great portrayers of the American West.
