Leo Haas - A Dozen Lithographs - the Holocaust - Prague, 1947

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

June 3, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: 12 Puvodnich Litografii Z Nemeckych Koncentracnich Taboru [a dozen original lithographs from German concentration camps] by Leo Haas. Published by Vydal Svaz Ozvobozených Politických Vězňů a Pozůstalých Po Politických Vězních [Union of liberated political prisoners]. Prague, 1947. A dozen lithographs portraying German extermination camps by the artist Leo Haas; accompanied by a booklet with an introduction and texts for each lithograph (English, Russian, Czech and French). The artist's signature, in pencil, appears on the title page.Leo Haas (1901-1983), was born in Opava, Czechoslovakia. Studied art in the Karlsruhe Academy and in Berlin and worked as an illustrator for newspapers and periodicals in Vienna. In 1926 he returned to his hometown, and shortly afterwards became famous for his portraits. In 1937, following the first pogrom in Opava, his art was declared as "degenerate art" and he was accused of "cultural Bolshevism" because his drawings appeared in a workers' newspaper. After thr Crystal Night he moved to Ostrava. In October 1939 Haas was sent to Nisko labor camp. While in the camp, he painted portraits of SS soldiers and of the supervisors, in return for more food and art supplies. His paintings, documenting the construction of the camp and the prisoners, survived and constitute a rare and important document of the period. When the labor camp in Nisko was dismantled, he returned to Ostrava; later he was sent to the Terezin Ghetto. In Terezin Haas was a member of the technical-graphic department, together with Otto Unger, Bedrich Fritta and other artists. In 1944, when the Ghetto painters were investigated as to their ties with illegal organizations and with elements outside the Ghetto, he was accused of distribution of propaganda and sent to Auschwitz. For several months Haas was moved from camp to camp. Finally he was sent to Ebensee concentration camp which was liberated by the American Army in 1945. After the war Haas returned to Terezin and to other venues where he lived, and succeeded in locating his paintings. For the rest of his life, Haas was committed to the documentation of crimes he witnessed. For additional information about Haas - see enclosed material. 12 leaves - lithographs, 48X34 cm. + [1] folded sheet. No folder. Good condition. Slightly stained and damaged. From the collection of Haim Hefer.

PAUL CADMUS Venus and Adonis.

by Swann Auction Galleries

June 4, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $200,000 - $300,000

Description: PAUL CADMUS Venus and Adonis. Egg tempra and oil on canvas on pressed wood board, 1936. 725x825 mm; 28 1/2x32 1/2 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Cadmus loosely based the composition of this work on the Peter Paul Rubens oil on canvas of the same subject, circa 1635-1640, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Though Cadmus set the scene in a classical landscape, his Adonis is rushing to play tennis, clutching the racket in his right hand and two ballis in his left, while fending off his clinging Venus and a bawling baby, a microcosm of 1930s suburban life under the guise of a subject from antiquity. by Auctionata US

June 6, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $10,000

Description: Color lithograph on ArchesFrance, 1983Marc Chagall (1887-1985) – Russian/French Expressionist painterSigned in pencil lower right ‘Marc Chagall’Numbered in pencil lower left ‘40/50’Mourlot 1013Full margins; framed and mattedImage dimensions: 15 ¾ x 12 in. (40 x 30.5 cm.)Very good condition Estimate $6,000-$10,000Expressive and romantic, this late lithograph by Marc Chagall features the artist’s distinct dream-like style. Depicting a nude woman with two faces, she is surrounded by floating imagery that includes a goat, birds, children and trees. With pastel colors, the result is a symbolically aesthetic appearance that captures the artist’s significance. Executed in 1983, this color lithograph on Arches is signed and numbered forty from an edition of fifty. With full margins, the work measures 15 ¾ x 12 inches. In overall good condition, not examined out of frame. Marc Chagall (French/Russian, 1887-1985)Honored for his distinct style and pioneering role among Jewish artists, Marc Chagall painted dream-like subjects rooted in personal history and Eastern European folklore. He worked in several mediums, including painting, printmaking, and book illustration, and his stained glass windows can be seen in New York, France, and Jerusalem. Chagall arrived in Paris in 1910 and began experimenting with Cubism, befriending painters Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. Chagall’s style has been described as a hybrid of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, and his supernatural subjects are thought to have significantly influenced the Surrealists. Though he actively engaged in the Parisian artistic community, art for Chagall was first and foremost a means of personal expression. He preferred to be considered separately from other artists, his imagery and allegory uniquely his own. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Andy Warhol, Screenprint, Kiku (Blue, White, Red), USA, 1983

by Auctionata US

June 6, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: Unique color screen print on paperUSA, 1983Andy Warhol (1928-1987) - American Pop artistWith the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Andy Warhol Estate ink stamp, versoInitialed and inscribed "PT 120C UT.015" in ink, verso by Tim HuntFeldman & Schellmann II. 307-309Dimensions: 40 x 32 inches (101 1/2 x 81 1/4 cm)Full margins, framedVery good conditionProvenance: The Andy Warhol Estate, New York; Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzberg; Max Lang, New YorkEstimate $10,000-$15,000This unique, 1983 screenprint on paper, is an unpublished trial proof from the period when the artist was working on the “Kiku” portfolio of three prints for the Gendai Hanga Center in Tokyo, Japan (see Feldman & Schellmann II. 307-309). Kiku means chrysanthemum in Japanese and it is considered the royal flower. This atmospherically printed silkscreen, with its dramaticChiaroscuro is entirely different from any images in the portfolio and is much more painterly. The print is stamped on the verso by both the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Andy Warhol Estate, and is initialed and inscribed in ballpoint pen PT 120C UT.015 by Tim Hunt from the Warhol Foundation. The print is also accompanied with the original certificate from the Andy Warhol Foundation. It is extremely rare to have the original authentication letter as these are often lost and can never be replaced. The print, in excellent condition, measures 40 x 32 inches and is framed. Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987)Arguably one of the most influential American artists, Andy Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop art movement. He is particularly known for the breadth of his oeuvre, as it encompassed painting, hand drawing, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film and music. Fascinated with celebrity culture and status, his silkscreens of pop icons and mundane objects were particularly successful and cemented his place as a “celebrity” artist. His studio, The Factory, was a famous gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. As early as the 1970s galleries started exhibiting Warhol’s work, which is now part of some of the most renowned collections worldwide, including the Modern Museum of Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; and d’Art Moderne, Paris. Delicately printed in golden tones, “Kiku” which means chrysanthemum in Japanese, is considered the royal flower. In this unique example, that regal spirit is beautifully conveyed. The print is stamped on the verso by both the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Andy Warhol Estate, and is initialed and inscribed in purple ink “PT 120A UT.017” by Tim Hunt from the Warhol Foundation. The print is also accompanied with the original certificate from the Andy Warhol Foundation. It is extremely rare to have the original authentication letter as these are often lost and can never be replaced. The print, in excellent condition, measures 32 x 40 inches and is framed. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
