(30.2 x 17.8 cm.)Sheet dimensions: 16 x 11 ¾ in. (40.6 x 29.8 cm.)Very good conditionPortraying a graduation ceremony, this richly worked lithograph by Grant Wood offers a self-portrait of the American artist. Wood, the honorary degree recipient, stands at center while a man to the front hands him his diploma and another places a hood over his head. A gothic-style window is placed at the center of the background, with light pouring in at a steep angle, highlighting the triangular composition of the work. Executed in 1938, this lithograph on BFK Rives is signed in pencil. From an edition of two hundred and fifty, it was published by Associated American Artists, New York. The work has full margins with deckled edges, the sheet measuring 16 x 11 ¾ inches. Another impression of this work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC. Pale mat burn around edges, remnants of mat tape in upper left and right corners, otherwise in good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs. Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942)American painter Grant Wood is best known for his paintings depicting rural Midwest America. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, Wood spent time in France and Germany, influenced by the Gothic overtones of German art in the late 1920s. After returning to the United States, Wood painted and exhibited "American Gothic," which has since become one of the most iconic images of the 20th century. This painting secured his role as an exponent of American Regionalism, a style that shunned European abstraction in favor of portraying everyday rural life. His legacy has influenced multiple generations of American artists, including Norman Rockwell. The artist's works can be found in the collections of numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.

(41.3 x 60.3 cm.)Overall dimensions: 25 ½ x 32 ¾ in. Very good condition"The Chap Book" was a publication started by Herbert Stone, son of the publisher of the Chicago Daily News, and Ingalls Kimball in the early 1890s. The periodical, popular in intellectual circles, focused on literary criticism, art news and reproductions in the form of posters. The periodical was a success, which allowed Stone and Kimball to commission works from prominent American poster artists such as Hazenplug, Bragdon, Leyendecker, Bird and Bradley. In 1896, Stone and Kimball asked a French affiliate company, La Plume, to commission a poster from the venerable Lautrec as a way of advertising the periodical throughout Europe. Lautrec agreed, and found inspiration in the Irish-American Bar on the Rue Royale in Paris. The bar was a popular spot for British jockeys, their trainers, local coachmen and even Lautrec himself, who were regularly served by a Chinese/American Indian bartender from San Francisco named Ralph. Ralph is visible in this work, serving two fashionable men in top hats. Executed in 1895, this color lithograph on wove paper is signed with the artist's elephant monogram. Printed by Chaix, Paris, the work measures 16 ¼ x 23 ¾ inches. Rare, unlined example, in overall good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901)Born as Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa in France, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec exhibited artistic talent from a young age. His first exhibition was in Toulouse in 1887, and he went on to exhibit in Paris and Brussels with regular participation in the Salon des Indépendants from 1889 to 1894. Influenced by Impressionism and Japanese woodcuts, Toulouse-Lautrec created works depicting the distinctive scenes and figures of the Parisian night life. He soon gained regular commissions for his posters by renowned nightclubs like the Moulin Rouge and was extremely prolific, producing over 6,400 works in total in a span of twenty years. With the largest collection held by the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, his works have been collected worldwide by institutions including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Hermitage Museum, Kunstmuseum Basel, and Neue Pinakothek.

(40.3 x 29.8 cm.)Very good conditionProvenance: St. Louis Art Museum; Private Collection, New YorkCommissioned by New York gallerist Curt Valentin, this portfolio was Beckmann's first attempt in printmaking in four years, and also his last. Representing the real versus the imaginary, "Day and Dream" weaves autobiographical elements with biblical and mythological tales and scenes of sexual conflict. The work presented here, "Circus (Zirkus)" demonstrates the artist's vision of the world as a circus or theater with an amalgamation of figures and objects. Together, the fifteen lithographs sum up a lifetime of his artistic themes. Executed in 1946, this lithograph on cream wove paper is signed, inscribed and numbered fifty-seven from an edition of ninety. Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950)One of the most important German artists of the 20th century, Max Beckmann was an Expressionist painter, though he rejected both the term and the movement. Born in Leipzig, Beckmann taught himself to paint by imitating the masters such as van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens and Cézanne. Beckmann enjoyed great success as a painter during the Weimar Republic, teaching at Städelschule Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt. When the Nazis rose to power in 1933, he was removed from his teaching position and moved to Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris, eventually emigrating to the United States. Although he worked primarily in oil on canvas - including his secular triptych paintings - Beckmann also experimented with sculpture, printmaking and drawing. His works have been the subject of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

MELBOURNE, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD2,500 - AUD3,500

Description: Frederick Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), a rare French patinated bronze, Paris 1878, depicting the head of the Statue of Liberty on a black marble plinth, inscribed to the right shoulder 'Souvenir de l'exposition 1878 Statue de la Liberte Bartholdi copyright 30 August 1876', foundry mark to the left shoulder 'Avoiron Cie Paris' 13 cm high, 8 cm wide, 8 cm deep LITERATURE Charles M. Blanc, Les Beaux-Arts a l'exposition universelle de 1878, Paris 1878, p. 21 and 175. Catalogue officiel publié par le Commissariat Général. Tome I, Groupe I, Oevre d'art, Paris 1878, p. 83. Horst W. Janson, 19th century sculpture, New York 1985, p. 179-181. OTHER NOTES The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (French, 1834-1904) and Gustave Eiffel (French, 1832-1923), was a gift of friendship from France to the United States and commemorates the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. On June 30th, 1878 the completed head of the statue was shown at the Paris Exposition in the garden of the Tocadéro Palace. Being responsible for the financing of the statue, the French people initiated charitable lotteries, public donations and various forms of entertainment to raise the sum of 2.250.000 Francs. The present work is most probably one of the miniatures which were sold at the Paris Exposition in 1878 for raising the construction funds.

by Doyle New York

April 1, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Description: William Matthew Prior American, 1806-1873 Portrait of Andrew Jackson Pierce, 1837 Signed and inscribed on the reverse By Wm M Prior/Painted for May 16 1837 /Andrew Jackson - / Pierce Son of/. Pierce Oil on canvas 27 x 22 inches Provenance: Gift of Joseph R. Messina to Tom Handee, New York Estate of Tom Handee By inheritance to the Joseph R. Messina, New York Jacquelyn Oak, curator of the 2012 exhibition Artist and Visionary: William Matthew Prior Revealed for the Fenimore Art Museum of the New York State Historical Association at Cooperstown and the Museum of American Folk Art, New York, writes, "There is no question that this painting is by Prior; the signature and inscription seen here are similar to others that appear on comparable portraits. Stylistically, this is typical of the work he was doing in the late-1830s, both in Portland and Bath, Maine, as he was traveling back and forth between the cities. This portrait displays more of his 'academic' style which is employed very often at this stage of his career. I find it particularly compelling because artwork from this period is more rare than that executed after 1840 when he moved to Boston." We extend our thanks to Ms. Oak for her very kind assistance in authenticating this work. C

Description: Height: 59 in. (137.16 cm)Width: 47 in. (114.30 cm)Depth: 3 in. (8.89 cm)Country of Origin: USAStyle: Military EmbroideryCondition: OriginalYear: c. 1905Beautifully framed American silk embroidery. Framed under glass. Eagle crest with glass eye. Metallic threading for anchor. Stars and stripes shield panel. Banner reads 'Remembrance of My Cruise China, Japan and PI' Painting on silk in lower panel with silver threaded framing around it. Teddy Roosevelt decided that America needed to deal with its Asian neighbors so he opened trade with them. It was called the Open Door policy. Gunboat diplomacy originated here. These were made for the American fleet so that the sailors could be sent home souvenirs from the orient. At the end of the 19th century the United States was rising as a world power. The U.S. Navy cruised the oceans to Show The Flag to emerging Far East countries. Merchants in the 'Treaty Port' cities of Hong Kong, Tokyo and Manila commissioned artisans to adapt their skills to create beautiful low relief embroideries for sailors and officers who visited their ports. They mixed gold, silver and copper silk thread along with hand painted panels of their ships to create a highly effective memorial of their visits to these ports.Embroideries featured their national symbols in impressive compositions with lovely detail work. They came in various sizes and designs. The ones owned by AT represent the largest and most impressive of those ever created. These pieces featured their ships done in one off original paint, a series of flags from the different Treaty countries, a photograph of the young sailor and often times a photo of his captain. Most were special ordered and turned out in an efficient fashion in time for the sailor's departure. These exceptional creations were the highest expression of this art form. They were also the most expensive and delicate works of the genre and consequently few were produced. These finely done highly detailed original guache paintings are portraits of U.S.Navy Armored Cruisers of the 'PENNSYLVANIA' or 'DREADNAUGHT' class, 1906, flying an Admiral's pennant these were likely the flagships of the Pacific Fleet. This rare example is exceptional in its size, condition, inclusion of the sailor's photograph, and inclusion of a fine original painting of his ship. We have presented it in a magnificent gilt frame so that it can hang in a man's library as a piece of art.Beautifully framed and measure 59"H x 47"W.
