Lot 6621: American Carved and Painted Wood Ships Figurehead Circa. 1900 In theform of a fashionably dressed lady with elaborately coifed hair her right

by Butterfield, Butterfield & Dunning

2001

USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: American Carved and Painted Wood Ships Figurehead Circa. 1900 In theform of a fashionably dressed lady with elaborately coifed hair her right hand securing her draperies at her bust, her left hand holding her skirts against her side, overall painted cream. Height 8feet 7inches 2.62m See Illustration Note: Evidence of early ship figureheads can be traced via drawings, paintings, carvings and inscriptions. One of the oldest examples is on a painted vase from the Naqada period, Egypt dating from 3100 Bc, clearly illustrated on the vase is a vessel with a bird figurehead. These carved forms were often thought to project an image for the vessel i.e. a Phoenician cargo vessel dated around 722-705 Bc had a horse head thus signifyingspeed. The figurehead itself appears to have begun as an homage to a deity to ensure safe passage and later developed into a totem to terrify ones enemy at sea. The Vikings, perhaps one of the most feared group of nautical warriors, utilized this concept of the figurehead well. Their ships were adorned with grotesque characterizations of snakes, dragons or other mythical beasts. In the14th and 15th centuries the figurehead was usually one of an animal surrounded by painted heraldic decoration. As ships evolved in designthe figurehead grew in importance. By the late 16th century the galleon had a " beakhead" which projected over the bow, this feature, although functional, provided carvers with more space to fill Naval activity increased by the 17th century and consequently a nation's power was often judged by its fleet. Figureheads, hence, evolved intoimages of Monarchs or heraldic crests. The British Sovereign of the Seas 1637 , perhaps one of the best known fighting ships of her day had a head carved in the likeness of the Anglo Saxon King Edgar mounted on his horse riding into battle. The total cost of the ship was 40,000 pounds of which 7,000 pounds was commissioned for the figurehead. North America also recognized the importance of these figureheads - ships from the United States were headed by figures of Native Americans or elaborate carved Eagles as a tribute to the new nation. The art form became so illustrious that it a ed some of the most gifted carvers in history among them Gringling Gibbons. Like theart form, figureheads continued to evolve and reflect the times. A massive expansion in merchant shipping occurred in the 19th century in both Europe and the United States. As these private enterprises began to flourish figureheads became a source of pride. Instead of a deity, or a monarch, figureheads now paid tribute to the owner or a family member which was probably the case with the offered lot. By the end of the 19th century the clipper ships had been replaced by more reliable metal hulled steam ships. The figureheads were abandoned and replaced with bows painted with a striping of the owners colors a trend still prevalent on cruise and cargo ships of the present day. estimate
