Description: Steel Persia, 18/19th century Begging bowl originally used by Islamic mystics Oval form imitating the otherwise often used coco de mer Engravings and gold damascening Figural scenes with dervishes on the top and bottom side Encircling cartouches with inscriptions Dimensions: 10 x 26 x 12 cm (height x width x depth) Very good condition This kashkul was made of steel and has an oval form similar to a Seychelles coconut, also known as coco de mer. The piece is decorated with fine engravings and small gold damascening details, whereas the upper and bottom side depict figural scenes with dervishes (determined by the ‘tabar’, engl. axe). The middle section additionally provides an encircling band of cartouches fitted with inscriptions. Kashkuls were originally used by Islamic mystics as begging bowls and therefore often provided a chain attached to eyelets at the sides.Condition:The kashkul is in very good condition considering its age. There are small traces of use, especially regarding the slightly rubbed gold damascening details. The bowl measures 10 x 26 x 12 cm. The goddess is rendered in classic position, sitting with angled right leg. The robe is falling in loose folds and covers the deity’s body. A pleated headdress reaches over the shoulder and adorns the head, where the finely chased hair protrudes under it. Kannon's left hand is placed on the right knee and a scroll can be seen in it. A necklace adorns her neck and in the midst of the headdress a small Amithaba figure is visible. The face has a calm expression with half-closed eyes and the third eye is found in the center of the forehead. On the back the signature ‘Shuhou’ can be seen.Condition:The bronze is in very good condition with little signs of wear consistent with age. The figure measures 34 cm in height and 22 cm in width.KannonKannon, the goddess of mercy and compassion, counts among the most venerated figures in Buddhism and is highly respected in Asian cultures. Initially a male figure, it transformed over the centuries to a maternal goddess with wondrous healing powers who bestows solace and luck. As a bodhisattva, Kannon denied herself entrance into nirvana when she heard the laments of the mortals and helpfully returned to Earth. Her name roughly means ‘observer of the cries of the world’.
