Description: Wood, elaborately carved Europe, 19th Century Neo-Renaissance Lavish wood carvings Dimensions: 192 x 112 x 54 cm This bureau is mainly a product of the Neo-Renaissance with some older elements integrated such as the drop-flap writing surface and the putti on sea monsters, which form the feet. The elaborate figural carving work is striking. Figures in the shape of putti, fauns, dignitaries and even Adam and Eve are portrayed three-dimensionally. On the inside there are eleven drawers and a secret door in the middle. The drop-front is covered in leather on the inside. The bureau is in fair condition according to its age with the usual signs of age and use. The wood shows woodworm holes (inactive), age cracks and partially some material loss. The drop-front shows visible cracks, one across the width. There are signs of restoration work. The bottom double door cannot be locked properly for part of lock on the left hand side seems to be missing. The bureau measures 192 cm in height, 122 cm in width and 54 cm in depth. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Description: Bronze Japan, 19th century With a smile around the mouth Pleated garment On a naturalistic formed base Dimensions: 36.5 x 20 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection Austria Appealing representation of the goddess of compassion and goodwill in a long robe This dark patinated bronze figure was made in 19th century Japan and shows Kannon, the goddess of goodwill and compassion. She is seated with her legs placed over another on naturalistic formed base in form of a rock. The garment, with flowing folds, covers Kannon's body but leaves the chest area free. There a necklace with a round centerpiece is visible. Her right hand is placed on the thigh and a scroll is visible in her left hand. The face has a peaceful expression with a smile and the third eye is found in the center of the forehead. The finely engraved hair protruding under the scarf, which is placed over the high head and the goddess shoulders. The bronze is in good condition with little signs of wear consistent with age. Light patina wear is evident. The figure measures 36.5 cm in height and 20 cm in width. Kannon Kannon, the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, counts among the most venerated figures in Buddhism and is highly respected in Asian cultures. Initially a male figure, it transformed over the centuries to a maternal goddess with wondrous healing powers who bestows solace and luck. As a bodhisattva, Kannon denied herself entrance into nirvana when she heard the laments of the mortals and helpfully returned to Earth. Her name roughly means 'observer of the cries of the world'. Description: Wood, gold and lacquer painting, glass and mirror stones Burma, 19th century Classic Mandalay style Richly pleated garment Decorated hems Dimensions: 35 x 29 cm Good condition This wooden Buddha figure was made in the classic Mandalay style of gold and lacquer painting and date back to Burma the 19th century. Buddha is depicted inpadmasana, wherein both feet are turned upwards. His hands are forming the gesture of touching the earth, also known asbhûmisparsa mudra. In this pose, his opened left hand is resting on his lap and his right hand points to the earth with outstretched fingers. Buddha used this gesture to call the earth to witness the truth of his words. The enlightened is dressed a pleated robe. The hems are accentuated with glass and mirror stones and the garment covers the body right up to his right shoulder. Buddha has a contemplative peaceful facial countenance. The head shows a semi-circular ushnisha, ornate with further glass and mirror stones. The Buddha is good condition with signs of age and wear. Some stones are missing, color and gold abrasion, nicks and drying cracks are visible. The figure has a height of 35 cm and a width of 29 cm. Buddha is displayed in the upright samabhanga stand on a round base. His right hand is raised to his chest and forms the abhaya mudra with palm turned forward. This is the gesture of fearlessness and granting protection. The fingers of the left hand are pointing towards the ground. Buddha is wearing a long carved robe in relief that is wrapped around his left shoulder. He has a peaceful, meditative expression, long ear lobes and deep neck folds. Buddha's head is crowned by a high ketumala. Due to the remaining traces of gilding and pigment a graceful aesthetic is created. The Buddha figure is in visually appealing condition with signs of wear consistent with age. Loss of material, especially on the back, color abrasion, drying cracks and pitting to the wood are visible. The height is 165 cm. He is seated in padmasana on a pedestal, which is decorated with lotus flowers in relief. His soles are turned upwards and the left hand is placed in his lap with the open palm facing heavenwards. Shakyamuni's right hands form the bhumisparsa mudrā, the gesture of touching the earth. His palm is turned inward and his fingers point towards the earth. With this gesture, Buddha calls on the earth to bear witness to the truth of his words. The pleated garment is decorated with delicate floral ornaments, has chased seams and leaves the right shoulder bare. The characteristic features, such as prominent wrinkles on his neck, long earlobes, a peaceful, serene expression and the third eye urna in the middle of the forehead are presented in detail. They signify the majesty of the Buddha Shakyamuni. His pointed curls are crowned by a conical ketumala. The fine bronze figure is in good condition with age-related signs of wear. Slight patina abrasion, small dents on the back and notches are visible here and here. The figure measures 31 cm in height, 22 cm in width and 15 cm in depth.
