Car Mascot of a

Lot 13: Car Mascot of a "Wild Cat", nickel plated bronze, around 1920

by Auctionata

January 15, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €230 - €280

Description: Car mascot of a wildcat made of nickel plated bronzeMost certainly Austria, around 1920 Very nice collectibleOverall Dimensions: 12 (d) x 8 (w) x 12 (h) cmThis beautiful car mascot shows the powerful figure of a roaring wildcat. The muscular, tight body of the beast is stretched forward. Its expressive modulation gives the roaring animal a dynamic male charisma. The hood ornament is in good condition. It shows little surface abrasion, the tail of the cat is broken off and missing. The dimensions of the cat are 12 (d) x 3 (w) x 9 (h) cm, the total height including mounting is 12 cm.The history of mascotsSince the turn of the century, car mascots have been indispensable accessories for automobiles and were particularly common until the 1940s. Traditional figureheads of ships, which should keep the course of them and protect the sailors from misfortune, served as models. The first mascots were not assigned to any automobile-brand, but represented individuality and luxury of the owner. Thus a great variety of artistically valuable works were produced on themes from mythology, religion and sports. Parallel to mass motoring mascots got increasingly rare. Today they are mounted merely on cars of the higher vehicles classes, such as Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce.
