LARGE SAILOR-MADE MODEL OF THE CLIPPER SHIP

by Northeast Auctions

August 16, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Portsmouth, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: East Boston shipbuilder, Donald McKay, built the "Sovereign of the Seas" on speculation and launched her in June 1852. An extreme clipper, she was considered the largest merchant ship of her day and may have been the fastest two-deck clipper ever built. Her speed on the New York-California run led James Baines of Liverpool to charter "Sovereign" for his Black Ball Line, putting her into service in the Australian wool trade. There she set a new record for passage between London and Melbourne in 65 days, which remained unbroken for thirty years. Her career ended when she ran aground on the Pyramid Shoals in the Malacca Straits in 1859 and was declared a total loss. The planked and pinned hull with carved figurehead; the two-tier deck fully outfitted with cabins, hatches, wheel, capstan, barrels and lifeboats; the masts fully rigged and flying the American flag. Height on stand 53 inches, length 76 inches.Provenance: Collection of J. Welles Henderson; Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia.Literature: Illustrated in J. Welles Henderson and Rodney P. Carlisle, "Jack Tar: A Sailor's Life, 1750-1910," pp. 58-59.

Description: A Superb Ancient Barava, Western Solomon Islands, 18th Century or earlier; mostly complete with two large and impressive figures standing on circular base. The shell is very thick and with an ancient patina of the oldest types of these objects have; on a custom made display stand. Provenance: Tebbenham Collection; Tebbenham was on the Navy Ship the HSM Mohawk 1898 on a punitive expedition to the Western Solomon Islands due to head hunting raids on the neighbouring Islands. Ex BL Hornshaw Collection (1878-1937); Hornshaw was an avid collector of Pacific and Australian Aboriginal artefacts, he received many of his pieces from people who lived and worked in the Pacific in the late 19th Century. The most complex clam shell objects were barava, ornate openwork plaques created in the western Solomon Islands. The designs on some barava are geometric, but many include stylized human figures interspersed with forms that resemble faces, shown with spiral eyes and grinning mouths filled with minute teeth. Barava appear to have been associated with burial places and were reportedly used to adorn structures housing the skulls of prominent men, slain enemies or placed on graves. In the past, some barava formed part of vovoso, powerful charms carried in war canoes during head hunting expeditions to protect the crew and ensure success. 20 x 16cm
