Landi (Gaetano) - Architectural Decorations:

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

February 18, 2016, 1:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £1,500 - £2,000

Description: A Periodical Work of Original Designs Invented from the Egyptian, the Greek, the Roman, the Etruscan, the Attic, the Gothic for Exterior and Interior Decoration , engraved title, 24 hand-coloured plates only by G.D'Argenzio after Landi (of 30, numbered 1-6, 1-6, 13-18 and 6 unnumbered, lacking the final Chinese section), some with aquatint, one plate with caption 'Chinese Drawing Room' corrected in pencil to 'Roman ', rather soiled and browned, a few small stains, mostly marginal, title and first few plates frayed and chipped at edges, plate 16 torn affecting plate but not actual image, a few other small tears, mostly marginal, disbound and loose, folio, by the Proprietor G.Landi, and sold by Tho.s King Jun., 1810 [watermarked J.Whatman but no date visible]. Very rare collection of designs in the Greek, Egyptian, Gothic and Roman styles , presumably issued in parts, with a view of a room in each style followed by plates of decorative details and furniture, and a ground plan and elevations in the case of the Roman section. The original drawing for the 'Grand Egyptian Hall' is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The book is dedicated to the Marquis of Douglas & Clydesdale, Alexander Douglas Hamilton, who in 1810 married the daughter of William Beckford, known as "the richest commoner in England". Landi may have been hoping for Hamilton's patronage. Only 3 copies have appeared at auction, one like this with 24 plates, the other two each with 30, one being a library copy. COPAC lists only a microform copy; WorldCat lists one copy in the library of the University of Wales and 4 copies in America.

Reuben Robert Kramer (American, 1909-1999)

by Neal Auction Company

February 20, 2016, 10:00 AM CST

New Orleans, LA, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,000

Description: Reuben Robert Kramer (American, 1909-1999), "Mother and Child", 1937, patinated bronze, verdigris patina, signed and dated on base "Roman Bronze Works N.Y., Cast No. 1, ©1937 Kramer", h. 48 in., w. 14 1/2 in., d. 11 in. Note: Reuben Kramer was an acclaimed sculptor from Baltimore known for his sensitive depictions of the human figure. Kramer studied at the Maryland Institute’s Rinehart School of Sculpture. In 1934, he won the coveted Prix de Rome and spent the next two years studying at the American Academy in Rome. The sculptures offered here were created in 1937, the year after he returned from his studies in Italy. Kramer’s sculptures went through a rigorous, multi-step process of creation from clay to bronze. Unlike some artists, who leave work to assistants, he participated in his sculpture from beginning to end. The two sculptures here demonstrate complete mastery of the human form inspired by classical Greek and Roman traditions. In 1978, the Baltimore Museum of Art presented a fifty-year retrospective exhibition of Kramer’s work. Despite many commissions, achieving great success and renown, Kramer’s work rarely appears on the market.
