First Mesa Etching by Edward Borein (1873-1945)

by North American Auction Company

August 29, 2015, 10:00 AM MST

Bozeman, MT, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $800

Description: This is an original dry point etching by the well renowned and talented Edward Borein (1873-1945). This piece is titled First Mesa and shows the great Southwestern cliff dwelling mesa of the Native American Indians. Borein was a working artist, having made his way in life on the proceeds of his art sales. The citizens of Santa Barbara are full of tales of Borein's senior years, when it is said the visitors to his studio on De La Guerra St. would be greeted with tall tales and etchings which could be had for a modest price. Amongst Edward Borein's close friends were the actor Leo Carillo and the humorist Will Rogers. They were often seen at the nearby "El Paseo" (www.calwestgroup.com) restaurant laughing and carrying on. His works sell very well at auction. This is not signed on the plate, but is an excellent work of art of his. This is in great condition. The frame measures 17.75”x23.75” and the art is 9”x15” rare larger sized etching.

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,400

Description: Colonial America1788 First American Edition “The Royal Standard English Dictionary” by Perry Printed by Isaiah Thomas (3 Known)1788-Dated, First American Edition, Hardcover Book entitled, “The Royal Standard English Dictionary,” by William Perry, Printed by and for Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, Massachusetts, Leather Bound, Very Good.Exceedingly Scarce, Original 1788 AMERICAN EDITION of: "THE ROYAL STANDARD ENGLISH DICTIONARY." This important 18th century treatise was written by William Perry (c. 1746-1807) and was Printed by Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, Massachusetts. The author was an English lexicographer who first published this work at Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1775. It become immensely popular, having "an extensive circulation both in Great Britain and in the United States." (See Vizetelly's "The Development of The Dictionary of The English Language").Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) was a noted American Patriot, Printer, and fervent supporter of George Washington. He performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Massachusetts and reported the first account of the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War.Condition: This exceedingly rare book remains in good collectable, yet well used condition. Volume bound in contemporary full calf [leather] with black spine label remnant; cover worn, ownership inscription to verso of front cover, front flyleaf lacking, title page stained with edge chipping, scattered toning, staining, minor spotting, edge wear and tearing, etc. This historic volume numbers 596 pages and measures approx. 5.5" x 5.5" x 2" thick. Imprinted on the first page: “To the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, This Edition of Perry’s Royal Standard English Dictionary, (Being the First Work of the Kind printed in America) Intended to Fix a Standard for the Pronunciation of the English Language, Conformably to the Present Practice of Polite Speakers in Great Britain and the United States; is Humbly Inscribed, by their most Obedient, and Very Humble Servant, Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, January 1, 1788.”Printer Isaiah Thomas, who is said to have become wealthy from this treatise, touted it as "the first Work of the Kind printed in America". Text passed through many successive editions in the United States; this First American Edition being the rarest and most desirable of all printings. We could not locate another obtainable copy, and WorldCat locates only Three Known Copies of this First Edition, all institutionally held in the U.S. and with at least one of these copies being markedly “deficient.” (See Evans 21385; Sabin 95400).
