« MEDECINE BUNDLE » dit JISH Navajo

Paris, France

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

TRES RARE CACHE RITUELLE Pierre, pigments

by EVE

June 1, 2015, 2:30 PM CET

Paris, France

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $14,000

Description: Etched copper plate and etching on wove paperFrance, 1958Marc Chagall (1887-1985) – Russian/French Expressionist painterPlate 6 from ‘De Mauvais Sujets’Published by Les Bibliophiles de L’Union Francaise, ParisKlipstein 111Dimensions: 15 x 11 in. (38 x 27.9 cm.)Good condition Estimate $10,000-$14,000This rare etched copper plate by Marc Chagall demonstrates the artist’s technical skill as a printmaker. Included in this lot is an impression pulled from the cancelled plate, allowing the viewer to better understand the Chagall’s artistic process. The plate and impression depicts a seated subject, with a winking head floating above and a tree at right. The plate has been etched with deep diagonal lines to show that it was cancelled, which is reflected in the impression. Executed in 1958, this etched copper plate and etching on wove paper each measure 15 x 11 inches. Copper plate: In overall good condition. Etching: Toning at sheet edges, soft handling crease lower left margin, otherwise in good condition. Marc Chagall (French/Russian, 1887-1985)Honored for his distinct style and pioneering role among Jewish artists, Marc Chagall painted dream-like subjects rooted in personal history and Eastern European folklore. He worked in several mediums, including painting, printmaking, and book illustration, and his stained glass windows can be seen in New York, France, and Jerusalem. Chagall arrived in Paris in 1910 and began experimenting with Cubism, befriending painters Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. Chagall’s style has been described as a hybrid of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, and his supernatural subjects are thought to have significantly influenced the Surrealists. Though he actively engaged in the Parisian artistic community, art for Chagall was first and foremost a means of personal expression. He preferred to be considered separately from other artists, his imagery and allegory uniquely his own. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
