II.128 - 137, pp. 86 - 87, (illus., another example) ESSAY:‘Today, stars are their own managers. Before there were people who did this, now you have to do everything yourself. It’s the same with art.’1 Arguably the most influential artist of the twentieth century, Andy Warhol revolutionised modern art, radically altering notions of authorship and commodity to confound distinctions between art and life, ‘high’ and ‘low’ art and above all, between artist and public, whose tastes and values not only came to coincide but became inseparable. Pioneering techniques now commonplace in contemporary art, Warhol employed a vocabulary of mass-produced images from advertising and the celebrity press to present art as essentially another commercial enterprise – an act filled with equal parts indifferent banality, ingenious marketing and celebration. Applauded as a mirror of contemporary American culture in which, he notoriously predicted, everyone would experience (or want to experience) ‘fifteen minutes of fame’, Warhol thus actively cultivated celebrity with his glittering reflections of the upper echelons of society attesting to that aspect of his practice he unapologetically described as ‘business art’. As art historian Robert Rosenblum suggests, his legacy may be considered in the venerable European tradition of portrait painting, with Warhol ‘the ideal court painter to the 1970s international aristocracy that mixed, in wildly varying proportions, wealth, high fashion and brains.’ 2That Warhol believed anyone could be a star is encapsulated superbly by the present series of glamorous portraits, Ladies and Gentlemen, 1975. While immediately evoking the allure of celebrity, the suite is, however, far removed from the earlier Jackie, Marilyn or Liz portraits which celebrate established personalities and derive from images made ‘public’ by virtue of their appearance in the media. Rather, Warhol here draws inspiration from Polaroid photographs he himself had taken of anonymous drag queens and transsexuals sourced by Interview magazine editor, Bob Colacello, from a Greenwich Village nightclub, ‘The Gilded Grape’. Predominantly of mixed-race and Hispanic origin, these models represented for Warhol the ultimate expression of the movie star presence he so eagerly sought to capture. Drawing heavily upon Hollywood idols, such individuals dedicated their lives to the performance of their self-fashioned personas, becoming manufactured icons in their own right. As Warhol pondered at the time upon the role of gender and artifice in self-image, ‘I wonder whether it’s harder for 1) a man to be a man; 2) a man to be a woman; 3) a woman to be a woman; or 4) a woman to be a man. I don’t really know the answer, but from watching all the different types, I know that the people who think they’re working the hardest are the men trying to be women. They do double-time… I guess it’s interesting to try to be another sex.’3 Bestowing a ‘glamour effect’ through the use of flamboyant colour, pose and accentuation of make-up intended to simulate fictional identities, thus Warhol immortalises anonymous figures of the promiscuous mixed-race American scene at the time denied visibility or marginalised by clichés relegating them to the fringes of community life. While mimicking the celebrity status of his other portraits, in its ambiguity and anonymity the series nevertheless veers away from the commerciality so often associated with Warhol’s work to explore a more abstract and elusive notion of fame. Similarly, the technique of photographic images printed upon torn paper collage employed here departs from Warhol’s highly mechanical silkscreened works of the previous decade to reveal, rather, traces of the artist’s hand - effectively belying his infamous declaration that ‘I just want to be a machine.’4 Indeed, like the best of his achievements, Ladies and Gentlemen remains deliberately enigmatic – Warhol seems to demand that his audience look beyond the visual seduction of the image surface, yet he himself remains ever passive and superficial, elucidating very little in terms of meaning. 1. D'APRÈS ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987). ANDY WARHOL / INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, BOSTON. 1966. 33x21 inches, 85x55 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 10, 2016, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $9,000

Description: D'APRÈS ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) ANDY WARHOL / INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, BOSTON. 1966. 33 3/4x21 3/4 inches, 85 3/4x55 1/4 cm. Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges; pin holes in corners. Silkscreen. Paper. Following an article in Time magazine on American Pop in which he was featured, Warhol's first solo show of Pop paintings was at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, in 1962. His first solo show in New York City was later that year at the Stable Gallery. The following years, with the burgeoning interest in Pop Art, saw his paintings included in group shows at such venerated institutions as the Pasadena Art Museum, Sidney Janis Gallery, Ileana Sonnabend Gallery (in Paris), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London and the Leo Castelli Gallery. Towards the end of 1965, his first solo museum show was held at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. That opening has entered into Art History legend as Warhol and Edie Sedgwick and others in his retinue had to flee the scene as the crowd had become so large and unruly. His second solo museum show was the following year at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston. In conjunction with this exhibition, the Institute published the renowned Campbell's Soup Can (Tomato) on a shopping bag. For the poster, the museum employs the same image used by Leo Castelli earlier that year for a Warhol show in April, it is a self-portrait based on a photograph taken by Rudolph Burkhardt. Curiously, the museum credits the photographer with the image, despite the fact that Warhol refers to it as a self-portrait. rare.

Colloquially known as the ‘Bride’ series,1 these works were originally shown under the title of ‘Allegorical Paintings’ and catalogue marginalia from the time describes them as being ‘(t)remendously strong, disquieting and anguished. Impossible to live with but above all superbly painted and controlled in composition.’2 One reason for their impact was their sheer physical scale as the sixteen paintings were each amongst the largest exhibited to date by a post-War Australian artist. However, within this overwhelming display were some smaller scale works, the most intimate of which was the ceramic tile on offer here, the poetically suggestive Protection.3 The ‘Bride’ series had its genesis in a journey undertaken by the artist to Central Australia in 1953.4 As a white middle-class boy from Melbourne, Boyd was entirely ignorant of the true plight of the Australian aborigine and what he found there astounded and deeply troubled him. Key to the resulting paintings was an incident he witnessed where a group of aboriginal women, dressed in wedding dresses, were carted to a ceremony on the back of a flat top truck. On return to Melbourne, hisconfusion and insufficient understanding led him to harshly describe the aboriginal population as being as ‘really pathetic. Lounging about on street corners at a loose end. No fight like the Negroes...’5 As with his peers, Boyd had at that stage experienced a greater interaction with wartime American GIs than with the original inhabitants of his homeland. However this was to change as Boyd, a genuine humanist, contemplated what he had witnessed. Known primarily as a painter, Boyd had established a pottery in Murrumbeena in 1944 with the artist John Perceval and the philosopher Peter Hebst (Boyd’s father Merric is regarded as the founder of studio ceramics in Australia). Branded as the AMB (Arthur Merric Boyd) Pottery, the main production was of hand-decorated domestic ware, but Boyd also produced more than 100 ceramic tiles between 1949 and 1953. Most featured biblical subjects and the imagery was applied in thin painterly layers of glaze with the result echoing the translucent depth of stained glass. For the artist, this process had more importance than simple experimentation. ‘It was the most marvellous feeling … a painting doesn’t have anywhere near the impact of pulling something out that has been almost purged by being through fire…. It is a pure object and it is changed. It’s formed in the fire and so the surprise is marvelous.’6 In 1956, the landmark Australian Galleries was established in Melbourne and shortly after, Boyd was taken on and paid a monthly stipend by the directors, Tam and Anne Purves. Financially stable for once, Boyd now found time to concentrate on the conflicted ideas that had been bubbling in his mind since the Central Australian experience. In his home-studio at Surf Avenue, Beaumaris, the artist set to work envisaging a saga of the doomed lovers ‘trapped in the space between two cultures, estranged and dreaming in a world of fantasy into which (they were) equally locked. The theme is frustration.’7 In most of the images, the Aboriginal groom appears to spurn his wife as he aspires to his dream bride but this single tile provides a tender contrast. Here, he ‘places his huge hand protectively on the pregnant bride – the only affectionate gesture in the series.’8 Amidst the turbulence and high drama of the exhibition’s monumental paintings, the discrete scale of Protection would have provided a delicate counterpoint reinforcing the beauty of its familial message. Purchased at the time by his colleague, the Bell School artist Guelda Pyke, it has remained within her family and is now offered publicly for the first time since its original exhibition nearly sixty years ago. 1. Also referred to as ‘Love, Marriage and Death of a Half-Caste’ 2. Unidentified author. Notes inscribed on original exhibition catalogue, Arthur Boyd (Australian Art and Artist file), State Library of Victoria, Melbourne 3. The exhibition comprised 16 paintings, 3 studies, 1 sketch, and 1 tile. 4. Not 1951 as is commonly listed. The journey occurred during October/November 1953.
