Piper & Co., MunichEach from an edition of 100Gallwitz 290, 304'Weathervane' sheet dimensions: 15 ¾ x 11 ¾ in. (40 x 29.8 cm.)'Komposition' image dimensions: 7 ½ x 4 in. (19 x 10.2 cm.); Overall dimensions: 16 x 12 ½ in. (40.6 x 31.8 cm.)Good conditionThis group of two lithographs by Max Beckmann were given as gifts by his wife, Mathilde von Kaulbach, nicknamed "Quappi," and each are signed by her. "Weather Vane" comes from Beckmann's 1946 "Day and Dream" portfolio commissioned by New York gallerist Curt Valentin. According to Quappi, the weathervane depicted in this print is an actual weathervane that sat atop a house opposite that in which the artist lived. "Composition" features a figure almost identical to that at the left of Dix's triptych "Acrobats" (1938). With his foot upon a stool, the crowned figure holds a globe. Both lithographs feature an inscription by Quappi to their intended recipients. "Weather Vane" has tape from previous matting on upper and lower right corners, verso. Otherwise each in overall good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs. Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950)One of the most important German artists of the 20th century, Max Beckmann was an Expressionist painter, though he rejected both the term and the movement. Born in Leipzig, Beckmann taught himself to paint by imitating the masters such as van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens and Cézanne. Beckmann enjoyed great success as a painter during the Weimar Republic, teaching at Städelschule Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt. When the Nazis rose to power in 1933, he was removed from his teaching position and moved to Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris, eventually emigrating to the United States. Although he worked primarily in oil on canvas - including his secular triptych paintings - Beckmann also experimented with sculpture, printmaking and drawing. His works have been the subject of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott Cit

Lot 68124: BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott Cit

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott City, Maryland, 1930 Oil on canvas 25 x 36 inches (63.5 x 91.4 cm) Signed lower right: Beulah Barnes Weaver Dated verso: 1930 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Virginia; Estate of the above. This remarkable painting of the picturesque town of Ellicott City, Maryland, located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., is the work of Beulah Barnes Weaver, a painter, sculptor and art educator from Washington, D.C. Painted in 1930, the scene of undulating hills, houses and winding red brick streets straddles Modernist and Regionalist idioms in almost perfect balance and harmony. Despite Beulah Barnes Weaver's impressive exhibition history and affiliations with major artists groups in the Washington area throughout the 1920s and 30s, her work is quite scarce and rarely appears at auction. She trained at the Art Students League in New York and the Corcoran Museum School in her hometown, as well as with the Italian Peppino Gino Mangravite who made his career in the United States, and the German emigre Karl Knaths. The present work owes an enormous debt to Mangravite. Biographies of Beulah Weaver do not identify where she encountered him, but it seems probable that she got to know him in Washington during the three-year period (1926-28) he taught art courses at the Potomac School, and was an active part of the Washington art scene. One of the hallmarks of his style from the late 20s and 30s is a highly sculptural treatment of form with elaborate modeling, which characterizes this highly realized work by Weaver. The naturalism is subordinated to the overall structure, imparting an almost surreal quality to the image, notably in the repetition of shapes, and the careful and insistent delineation of every brick in the road. Beulah Weaver was a member of the Society of Washington Artists. Her exhibition history included shows at the Anderson Galleries, New York; Washington Women's Club; Salons of America (1925, 1927-30); Corcoran Gallery biennials (1930, 1932); Independent Artists Exhibition, Washington, D.C. (1935, purchase award); and the Society of Washington Artists (1935, prize; 1948, prize). She worked for three decades as art director and teacher at the Madeira School in Greenway, Virginia.

Description: DWIGHT WILLIAM TRYON (American, 1849-1925) Coastal Scene, 1887 Oil on canvas 10 x 29 inches (25.4 x 73.7 cm) Initialed and dated lower left: D. W. T. 1887 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Dwight Tryon was one of America's first Tonalists, and an influential artist and teacher who popularized the muted, poetic style epitomized by his marsh landscapes and quiet beach scenes, such as the present work of 1887. Born in Connecticut, Tryon developed his technique in France, where he studied at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and trained under Charles Daubigny in Barbizon. He returned to United States in 1881 and spent nearly forty years as an instructor at Smith College, eventually being named Director of the Art School. His atmospheric, Barbizon-inspired landscapes won countless honors, including gold medals at the American Art Association, the Carnegie Institute, the Munich Exposition of 1892, the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, and the St. Louis Expositions of 1904. The capitalist Charles Lang Freer was his lifelong patron, and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. now houses the largest collection of Tryon's work. His paintings are also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Lot 15: "Harlem as Seen by Hirschfield," New York, 1941

by Auctionata US

March 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,600 - $4,500

Description: Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) - American painter and caricaturistWilliam Saroyan (1908-1981) - Pulitzer Prize winning dramatist, provided the introduction for this bookNew York: Hyperion Press, 1941Edition of 317 of 1000 copiesIllustrated with 24 tipped-in lithographs6 page introduction by SaroyanColor pictorial clothFolio; 460 mm x 355 mm (18 in. x 13 ¾ in.)A number of Al Hirschfeld's illustrations in, "Harlem as Seen by Hirschfield," have become iconic representations of the African-American experience in the 1930s. This printing was published in 1941 by Hyperion Press and is numbered 317 from a limited edition of 1000. The work is illustrated with twenty-four tipped-in lithographs and is accompanied by a six page introduction by William Saroyan. The cloth is darkened with minor stains, the spine frayed, corners showing, mild darkening to pages at the edges and gutter margin. The lithographs have narrow browning along left edge where tipped to mounts, but they are otherwise clean and good. Al Hirschfeld (St. Louis 1903-2003 New York City)Al Hirschfeld showed artistic promise even as a young boy. His family moved from St. Louis to New York City and enrolled him at the Art Students League. At seventeen, Hirschfeld became an art director at Selznick Pictures. He held the position until 1924 when he moved to Paris to work, to study art and to lead a Bohemian life. One evening in 1926, Hirschfeld sketched a caricature of the French actor Sacha Guitry onto a show's program, which caught the eye of friend and legendary publicity agent Richard Maney. Maney encouraged Hirschfeld to re-create the sketch on a clean sheet of paper and subsequently, sold the piece to the Herald Tribune. Soon, Hirschfeld's work was appearing in a number of newspapers, and in 1929, he made an exclusive agreement to work with the New York Times. His work became synonymous with theatrical fame-you weren't an established actor or actress until Hirschfeld drew your portrait. He was able to capture the essence of an actor or performance in a few simple lines. In the 1940s, Hirschfeld began to branch out, illustrating books for authors such as S.J. Perelman, Fred Allen and Brooks Atkinson. Hirschfeld also illustrated his own books, including, "Show Business is No Business," (1951), "The World of Hirschfeld," (1968) and, "Hirschfeld by Hirschfeld," (1979). Hirschfeld continued illustrating until his death in 2003. William Saroyan (Fresno 1908-1981 Fresno)The son of an Armenian immigrant, William Saroyan dropped out of school at fifteen and educated himself by reading and writing. His first collection of stories was, "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze," written in 1934. His first play, "My Heart's in the Highlands," was produced by the Group Theater in 1939. Saroyan's work is characterized by original and bold stories celebrating the joy of life in spite of poverty, hunger and insecurity. He was concerned about portraying the basic goodness of all people, especially the obscure and naïve, and placing importance on the value of life. Most of his work has an autobiographical element though it is always disguised as fiction. In 1940, Saroyan won the Pultizer Prize for Drama and in 1979, he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.

Melvin was a true bachelor, and though he loved his gal Elena very much, he let her know he was not the marrying kind. "Marriage," he told her, "is like cutting off my arms and handing them to you. Yes, the arms can hold you and keep you safe, but I can no longer use them myself to reach for the sky. From that point on I must focus my gaze on the foreground, and leave the horizon to others. I don't want this, and I doubt you would either." This was before the dream that would change his life. It began with Melvin standing in a field. In the sky above him this appeared: "Unir 1." Melvin couldn't make sense of it. Then Elena appeared, floating slowly across the sky toward him. In his hand was a huge pear. She took a bite of it as she neared him, then handed it to him and said, "Partake, my love, and clear the path. Soon the way will come to you." Melvin took a bite. It was delicious. He handed it back up to her and as she took it she said, "An old proverb will lead you to where I shall be waiting." Melvin spoke, "An old proverb? What, like "You are what you eat?" "And so it shall be," Elena began, "Tell me now, what have you partaken, what shall you be?" "I - we - ate part of a big pear," Melvin replied, "Then we are both parts of a big pair, are we not?" Elena asked. "Uh, yeah. Okay I get it," Melvin said. "And ever shall be. You and I are one, and we are each made larger and more complete by out pairing." With that Elena began to float away, but Melvin stopped her, "What does 'Unir 1' mean?" he asked. "I already told you, my love, fear not, it will come back to you, only slow down." The next day Melvin saw Elena and he promptly proposed. She was more than a little bit surprised, especially after she said yes and he offered her a pear instead of a ring. He said, "It'll come to you." She replied, "It better."Biography Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life's ups and downs. He has had nearly one hundred solo exhibitions in galleries across America, Australia and New Zealand, while also being featured at various prestigious international fairs including Art Miami, Artexpo New York, Sofa Chicago, Chicago Contemporary & Classic, and palmbeach3. Markus has amassed a collector base which includes Heads of State, major corporations and celebrities worldwide. Markus' wife and muse is artist, Sheryl Pierson. The two live and work in a converted loft in Kansas City, Missouri. "There's no doubt in my mind that my success has more to do with luck than talent, more to do with stubbornness than vision, more to do with ignorance than insight, but the fact remains that I pursued my dream and attained it against staggering odds. I say this now to anyone who will listen: even if I had failed, it would have been worth it. Better to face a brutal truth than to grow old wondering what might have been. " Markus Pierson

Description: This is a rare original batik painting by artist Betty Snyder Rees. The legendary dancer Isadora Duncan is depicted here in her elegant form, with flowing lines giving emphasis to her graceful movement. Isadora Duncan has been portrayed in art, and statues, since the early 1930's. Artist: Betty Heredia Snyder Rees Signature: Signed "Heredia," lower rightMedium: Batik painting on cottonSize: 26 1/2 x 37 inches Presentation: Matted in red fabric, with white patterned fabric "framing"; inner hanging rods, top and bottom Date: 1999Condition: Excellent Certificate of Authenticity: Included Midwest Estate Buyers has been entrusted by the estate of Elizabeth (Betty) Heredia (Shapiro) Snyder Rees to offer her personal artwork for public sale. Due to the rapidity that Elizabeth's artwork was sold commercially, this represents a treasure trove of her personal work as submitted by her son. It was her wish and legacy that others should enjoy what she enjoyed. Elizabeth's previous work was sold as rapidly as it became available. We consider this a unique opportunity to take recognition of an enormous talent. Her personal portfolios have now been opened up to reveal a variety of marvelous work, full of color and expression. As in the past, her work has appreciated considerably with time. Betty was a multi-dimensional artist. She was well versed in classic oil painting, water color, wax pencil, charcoal, sumi ink, drawing, hand made paper sculpture, paper mache, clay, wood, marble, printmaking, wood cuts, linoleum block, etching, monotype, serigraph, and multi-media silk screen. Elizabeth attended the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and studied under the founder, Boris Blai, and printmaker Arthur Flourie. Her work was first shown in California at Stanford University Museum of Art on campus. Many pieces were gifted to museums, including the Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, CA; Oakland Museum, Oakland, CA; Grand Rapids Museum of Art, Grand Rapids, MI; and according to the estate, the National Museum of American History Art Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. She received a deed of gift, certificate number 26800, dated 8/17/2001. Betty's work was known on the San Francisco Peninsula through the San Francisco Women Artists and Bay Area Printmakers Society and was juried into the California State Fair in 1956 and 1957. Betty taught at the Pacific Grove Art Center, and the Monterey Museum of Art, and also had exhibits of her work at these fine institutions. She was featured in a one person show at the Cherry Foundation in Carmel. She was compared to the then greatest living Cubist artist Richard Diebenkorn. Gehan Salinger, art critic of the San Francisco Chronicle for 25 years, referred to Elizabeth as "an unqualified genius." Her art has sold in galleries in Amsterdam and Barcelona to Europeans for their personal collections for many years. She had a solo show in Tokyo, Japan, and another in Denmark. A few of her pieces can be found in public art schools. Also, an oil painting of a marching band is in a special school for the deaf in Daley City, California. Betty passed away at the age of 91. She left behind her wonderful collection of original art. We are glad to bring it to you at what we consider to be very competitive opening bids for such fine artwork.

(40.3 x 29.8 cm.)Very good conditionProvenance: St. Louis Art Museum; Private Collection, New YorkCommissioned by New York gallerist Curt Valentin, this portfolio was Beckmann's first attempt in printmaking in four years, and also his last. Representing the real versus the imaginary, "Day and Dream" weaves autobiographical elements with biblical and mythological tales and scenes of sexual conflict. The work presented here, "Circus (Zirkus)" demonstrates the artist's vision of the world as a circus or theater with an amalgamation of figures and objects. Together, the fifteen lithographs sum up a lifetime of his artistic themes. Executed in 1946, this lithograph on cream wove paper is signed, inscribed and numbered fifty-seven from an edition of ninety. Pencil notations from the St. Louis Art Museum on the inside of mat, including inventory number. Published by Curt Valentin, New York, the sheet measures 15 7/8 x 11 ¾ inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs.
