by Auctionata AG

April 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,600 - €2,000

Description: Serigraph in colors on a cotton paper dress USA, 1965-67 Andy Warhol (1928-1987) - US-American artist, graphic artist and filmmaker With original title and care label Dress produced in an universal size, for individual trimming as well as in three different sizes (small, medium, large) Dimensions of dress: 83 x 51 cm Mounted in black wooden frame: 98.1 x 62.9 cm Andy Warhol was a co-founder of the US-American Pop Art and is considered its most important representative In the years 1965-67 the Campbell's soup company launched an advertising campaign in which the customers could order a disposable dress in fashionable A-line for only two soup can labels and one dollar. It was printed all-over with the well-known can labels that were made famous by Andy Warhol's Pop-Art paintings; the dress was available in 3 sizes and could be trimmed to individual length. Most copies of the dresses had actually been thrown away so that today this icon of pop culture is rarely offered.Condition: The dress shows visible signs of wear. It bears several, presumably original folds and creases and is partially toned. The seams are unstitched in places. The dress has been trimmed to a length of 83 cm. Several cracks (approx. 2-22 cm) and blemishes - partially touched-up with tape - can be seen along the lower hemline. The frame is in a very good condition with minimal signs of wear. The framed dimensions are 98.1 x 62.9 cm, the dress measures 83 x 51 cm.Andy Warhol (1928-1987) Andy Warhol, founder and leading figure of the American Pop Art, was born in 1928 as a son of Russian immigrants in Pennsylvania. He began his career as an artist by creating advertising graphics. Already in 1956, he presented his graphic works at the Museum of Modern Art. In the early 1960s Warhol began experimenting with different techniques and started focusing on typically American objects of the consumer society, as for example Campbell's soup cans or Coca Cola bottles. In 1962 Warhol started with his series of portraits of famous stars, such as Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley who were then at the height of their career. His renowned studio 'The Factory' was a meeting point for internationally successful artists, actors and musicians. As early as in the 1970s galleries started exhibiting Warhol's work, which is now part of some of the most famous collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott Cit

Lot 68124: BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott Cit

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: BEULAH BARNES WEAVER (American, 1879-1957) Ellicott City, Maryland, 1930 Oil on canvas 25 x 36 inches (63.5 x 91.4 cm) Signed lower right: Beulah Barnes Weaver Dated verso: 1930 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Virginia; Estate of the above. This remarkable painting of the picturesque town of Ellicott City, Maryland, located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., is the work of Beulah Barnes Weaver, a painter, sculptor and art educator from Washington, D.C. Painted in 1930, the scene of undulating hills, houses and winding red brick streets straddles Modernist and Regionalist idioms in almost perfect balance and harmony. Despite Beulah Barnes Weaver's impressive exhibition history and affiliations with major artists groups in the Washington area throughout the 1920s and 30s, her work is quite scarce and rarely appears at auction. She trained at the Art Students League in New York and the Corcoran Museum School in her hometown, as well as with the Italian Peppino Gino Mangravite who made his career in the United States, and the German emigre Karl Knaths. The present work owes an enormous debt to Mangravite. Biographies of Beulah Weaver do not identify where she encountered him, but it seems probable that she got to know him in Washington during the three-year period (1926-28) he taught art courses at the Potomac School, and was an active part of the Washington art scene. One of the hallmarks of his style from the late 20s and 30s is a highly sculptural treatment of form with elaborate modeling, which characterizes this highly realized work by Weaver. The naturalism is subordinated to the overall structure, imparting an almost surreal quality to the image, notably in the repetition of shapes, and the careful and insistent delineation of every brick in the road. Beulah Weaver was a member of the Society of Washington Artists. Her exhibition history included shows at the Anderson Galleries, New York; Washington Women's Club; Salons of America (1925, 1927-30); Corcoran Gallery biennials (1930, 1932); Independent Artists Exhibition, Washington, D.C. (1935, purchase award); and the Society of Washington Artists (1935, prize; 1948, prize). She worked for three decades as art director and teacher at the Madeira School in Greenway, Virginia.

KENYON COX (American, 1856-1919) May, 1890 Oil on canva

Lot 68172: KENYON COX (American, 1856-1919) May, 1890 Oil on canva

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: KENYON COX (American, 1856-1919) May, 1890 Oil on canvas 15-1/2 x 30 inches (39.4 x 76.2 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Kenyon Cox 1890 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: Collection of William T. Evans, circa 1893-1900; Sale: American Art Galleries, Chickering Hall, New York, "American Paintings belonging to William T. Evans," January 31-February 2, 1900, no. 137. EXHIBITED: World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago World's Fair), Chicago, Illinois, May 1-October 30, 1893 (bronze medal); Grand Central Art Galleries, New York, "La Femme," March 6-August 15, 1984. This quiet and radiantly colored nude by noted muralist Kenyon Cox was once part of the pioneering collection of American paintings amassed by dry goods merchant and railroad financier from Montclair, New Jersey, William T. Evans, who was the largest collector of American art before World War I. Evans assembled three collections of American painting, the first and second of which he sold at auction, and the third of which he donated to museums--notably 160 works to the then newly-formed National Gallery in Washington, 60 to the Montclair Museum, and smaller numbers to other museums in his home state. Cox's painting, May, belonged to Evans' second collection which he sold at public auction in 1900. In the catalogue accompanying that sale, a biography of Kenyon Cox speculated on why paintings of nudes were less numerous at exhibitions than they had been: "Years ago our exhibitions contained more pictures of the nude than now, a fact that is explained probably by the important commissions for mural painting given out of late which have absorbed the creative power of many of our most accomplished figure painters who are not devoted to portraiture. Kenyon Cox is one of those who was formerly a frequent contributor of works having the nude for subject, and an easel canvas by him of the sort is now a rarity. His skill as a draughts- man and the fine decorative quality of his composition have been long recognized. His portraits, notably some small ones, are considered among the best produced by the recent American school, and his ventures in landscape and out-door subjects have been received with cordial approval. As a designer and illustrator Mr. Cox's work is widely known and generally conceded to belong in the first rank, because of its intellectual, scholarly composition, and, as in his nude subjects, its masterly knowledge of the figure." Cox's nude May, which had been awarded a medal in the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, was described in the Evans catalogue as: "A nude female figure reclining on a grassy bank, with a piece of yellow drapery under her. Trees covered with spring blossoms fill the left of the composition. Beyond, at the right, a stretch of landscape. The young girl is painted with rare knowledge of form, and the figure is delicious in color."

T. 1887 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Dwight Tryon was one of America's first Tonalists, and an influential artist and teacher who popularized the muted, poetic style epitomized by his marsh landscapes and quiet beach scenes, such as the present work of 1887. Born in Connecticut, Tryon developed his technique in France, where he studied at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and trained under Charles Daubigny in Barbizon. He returned to United States in 1881 and spent nearly forty years as an instructor at Smith College, eventually being named Director of the Art School. His atmospheric, Barbizon-inspired landscapes won countless honors, including gold medals at the American Art Association, the Carnegie Institute, the Munich Exposition of 1892, the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, and the St. Louis Expositions of 1904. The capitalist Charles Lang Freer was his lifelong patron, and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. now houses the largest collection of Tryon's work. His paintings are also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
