PAUL CADMUS Venus and Adonis.

by Swann Auction Galleries

June 4, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $200,000 - $300,000

Description: PAUL CADMUS Venus and Adonis. Egg tempra and oil on canvas on pressed wood board, 1936. 725x825 mm; 28 1/2x32 1/2 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Cadmus loosely based the composition of this work on the Peter Paul Rubens oil on canvas of the same subject, circa 1635-1640, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Though Cadmus set the scene in a classical landscape, his Adonis is rushing to play tennis, clutching the racket in his right hand and two ballis in his left, while fending off his clinging Venus and a bawling baby, a microcosm of 1930s suburban life under the guise of a subject from antiquity. Sold Christie's, New York, with the label on the frame back; Midtown Galleries, New York, 1974; Forbes Collection, New York. Exhibited Indianapolis Museum, 1937; Museum of Modern Art, Paris, 1938; Springfield Museum, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1938; Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, 1939; Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, 1939; "Biennial," Richmond, Virginia, 1940; "Golden Gate International Exposition," San Francisco, California, 1940, number 1289; "Cadmus," Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, July-September, 1942; Metroplitan Museum of Art, New York, April 1941; "South American Traveling Exhibition," Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1941-1942, reproduced; "Traveling Group Show," Midtown Galleries, New York, 1951-1952; Philbrook Art Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1969; "Tennis In Art," Fidelity Bank, Boston, Massachusetts, 1970; "Tennis In Art II," Provident National Bank, 1971; "Three Figurative Painters," Midtown Galleries, New York, 1971; "Collector's Exhibition," Akron Art Institute, Ohio, 1973; "Summer Group Exhibition," Midtown Galleries, New York, 1974; "Ranger Fund Exhibition," National Academy of Design, New York, 1974; "An Unfulfilled Dream: The Neglected Generation of American Scene Painters," Wichita Art Museum, Kansas, March-June, 1981; "Paul Cadmus: Yesterday and Today," Miami University Art Museum, Oxford, Ohio, September 12-October 25, 1981; Edwin A. Morgan Weistling - Dreams In Blue

by Artistic Holdings Company

May 28, 2015, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $760 - $1,020

Description: Morgan Weistling - Dreams In Blue - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - Image Size: 16"w X 24"h. Limited Edition Of: 150 - The Theme Artist Morgan Weistling Began In "dreams In Gold," Matures In "dreams In Blue." “i Loved Painting This Girl From Above Because It Allowed Me To See Things From A Perspective Of Unhindered Patterns And Flowing Shapes. As This Painting Started To Come Together I Realized That My Model Was Floating In A World Of Her Own. This Illusion Represents A Sense Of Freedom That Figure Painters Rarely Get To Enjoy—the Freedom From Gravity,” Says Weistling. Imagination And Emotion Are Enhanced By His Masterful Use Of Oils. “having Her Bathed In Shades Of Blues And Cool Colors Added An Almost Underwater Quality To The Work. This Sense Of Fluidity And Motion Contrasts With The Near Static State Of Sleep, Creating A Still Life Work. More Importantly, It Hints At The Far More Expansive Realm Of Dreams She Resides In.”

Viking 'Death of Baldr' Mount

by TimeLine Auctions Limited

May 28, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £2,000 - £3,000

Description: 9th-12th century AD. A bronze piriform mount or repoussé die with pellets to the border, central motif of a facing figure with centre-parted hair, the body angled forwards with geometric lines before, trefoil behind the shoulders, possibly depicting god Baldr being killed by a mistletoe branch. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence analysis certificate. Baldr was a young and beautiful god of light and purity, son of the god Odin and the goddess Frigg. He had a dream of his own death and when his mother found out about the danger, she made every object in every realm vow never to hurt Baldr, except mistletoe. Loki, cunning god of mischief, found out and hurried to the place where the gods were indulging in throwing objects at Baldr, which would bounce off without harming him. Loki gave the mistletoe to Baldr's blind brother Hodr, who then inadvertently killed his brother with it. The story of Baldr's death is also recorded in Saxo Grammaticus' book Gesta Danorum, although it tells a slightly different story, in which Balder (called Balderus) is defeated by Hodr (called Hotherus) with a magic sword called Mistletoe. In this tale, Balder and Hodr were rival suitors for the hand of Nanna (wife of Balder in Edda), and Balder was a demigod with (nearly) invulnerable body. 27 grams, 42mm (1 3/4"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000.

Condition Report: Very fine condition. Extremely rare.

Rubinstein, Anton

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $2,500

Description: Rubinstein, Anton. (1829-1894) Russian composer and piano virtuoso; founder of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Unusual musical autograph manuscript signed ("Ant. Rubinstein"), 4 pages, folio (13 x 9 in.), no place (New York), undated (c.1873). Complete holograph score of his "Barcarole No. 5 for Piano," written out by Rubinstein for his American music publisher, G. Schirmer. On the otherwise blank first page, the composer penned a dedication: "A Madame la Comtesse / Marie Dohnhof / nee / Princesse de Campo Reale," and has written the title of the work in French, incorporating his signature: "5th Barcarolle / pour le Piano / composee / par / Ant. Rubinstein." He pens the title again at the top of page two where the composition begins. At the bottom of this page the music publisher has penned: "Copyright of G Schirmer / Entd. 1873 - New York" and added his presentation inscription at far upper blank margin: "Presented to / Mr. Geo. J. Huss / with the kindest regards of / G. Schirmer." The once fragile manuscript paper was expertly silked some years ago for preservation. It is uniformly age-toned. A boldly penned manuscript, undoubtedly written out for Schirmer during the composer's American tour in 1873. Publisher's copies of original musical manuscripts rarely come on the market. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500 R. M. Smythe, June 6, 1996, lot 467.

South American Pre-Columbian Chimu Kero Beaker

by TimeLine Auctions Limited

May 30, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £500 - £800

Description: 1300-1500 AD. A Chimu culture sheet-silver face-beaker or kero, depicting a hook-nosed male face with avian qualities, lentoid eyes, pronounced c-scroll ears and crescentic mouth; a raised collar below, a stepped headdress forming the rim; to the rear, a representation of a hairpiece or cloak. Cf. Museo Larco (ML 100746, etc); Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino (MCHAP 0298, etc). A marvellous example of the art of silversmithing. The vessel was made by hammering a very thin hand-beaten sheet of silver over a wooden core and then adding detail by hand. The use of silver is usually associated with the moon in Chimu culture. Accompanied by a positive XRF certificate issued by Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Ltd. 43 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Property of a lady, collected by her father on the London art market in the 1950s, thence by descent; formerly in a 19th century collection.
