RARE 39 STAR AMERICAN FLAG - 1876 Vintage

by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries

May 30, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Thomaston, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: RARE 39 STAR AMERICAN FLAG - 1876 Vintage "Anticipatory" Flag, the Centennial year flag that was never used, when it was expected that two states would be added but only Colorado was. Marked "Rice" in handwritten ink on the binding, this probably was issued to Fort Rice in the Dakota Territories, which was abandoned in 1878. The federal government issued 39 star flags to military bases and ships. Ironically, the second time this occurred, in 1889, when we officially had 38 stars, was when the Dakotas were thought to be entering as one state, but instead entered as two, jumping to 40 stars. This flag is 64" x 94", machine stitched stripes and field, hand stitched stars. Very good condition with one small repair between stripes.
