April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: PAUL SCHEURICH (1883-1945) OLIVER. 1909. 26 1/4x36 inches, 66 3/4x91 1/2 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt. Condition A- / B+: tears at edges; minor creases in image; pencil notation in lower right corner. Matted and framed. Scheurich was born in New York but settled in Germanyto work. A painter, sculptor and prolific graphic designer, he worked as a professor in Meissen (of porcelain painting) and then in Dresden for graphic design. In Berlin, Scheurich worked for the renowned printer Hollerbaum & Schmidt. In the years before the First World War, they were known not only for the quality of their lithography but also the impressive stable of artists they employed, such as Lucian Bernhardt, Hans Rudi Erdt and Julius Klinger. Scheurich's style was much like his counterparts in that it was heavily influenced by the British school, employing flat tones and no outlining. Such is the case in this Lucian Bernhard-style Sachs Plakat (Object Poster), in which the object being advertised is depicted against a flat background. It is curious to note the Bernhard's seminal poster for Adler typewriters was also designed in 1909. It is impossible to determine which image influenced the other. DFP-III 2854.

Serie, 23,2 x 17 cm, schwarz, beige, Knickfalten mit langen Einrissen, teils hinterlegt, OU, Schmitz/Metzger 13.5.Baron Willern D.A.M. van Brienen van de Groote Lindt, of Wassenaar, born in 1814, was responsible for the foundation of this zoo. He had the support of the King and of many leading citizens of Hague. The company was established on November 14th, 1861 by Royal decree. The initial capital was 150.000 Guilders divided into 3.000 shares of 50 Guilders each. The introduction of animals and facilities, most of them coming from the Netherlands colonies, and the propagation of useful species of both, were the goals of the company. The company's land and buildings were called the Zoologisch Botanisch Tuin (Zoological & Botanical Garden). The 18.82 acres of land on the Westbenoordenhoutsche Polder were situated, at that time. on the edge of the city. The German Army took over the zoo area in 1944, and the zoo had to close. The animals that had not died of hunger during four long years of war, were removed to nearby Wassenaar. The Heineken Brewery purchased the grounds of the former zoo after the war and sold sections of it back to the city later. Countries:NiederlandeRegion:Europa

by Poster Auctions International, Inc

May 4, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $2,500

Description: Artist: MAX CREMNITZ Size: 26 7/8 x 35 3/4 in./68.4 x 90.5 cm A curious and extraordinarily detailed image, this poster brings to life the legend of the court of Prince Vasily Golitsyn of Russia. As a form of entertainment, he would give his pet monkeys numerous bottles of well-shook champagne, which, when opened, would send the primates into a tizzy as they attempted to stop the flow of the beverage with their paws. In this particular image, they are each playing with the three types of Mumm champagne. First appearing in 1876, the red ribbon was intended as a decoration to distinguish Mumm's from other brands. In 1883, the green ribbon was introduced to indicate a semi-dry style of the beverage, while in 1924 the double ribbon signified the now-fashionable dry champagne.

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

May 24, 2014, 9:45 AM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £30 - £40

Description: No one was closer to Michael Jackson at the height of his creative powers than Bruce Swedien, the five-time Grammy winner who, with Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, formed the trio responsible for the sound of Jackson's records - records that topped the charts and shook the world. Friend, co-creator, and colleague, Bruce Swedien was a seasoned recording engineer - plucked from a job at legendary Universal Audio in Chicago - when he began working with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones on the soundtrack to The Wiz, and he was the master technician who gave the records their sound as the trio progressed to Jackson's greatest triumphs, Off The Wall and the iconic, history-making Thriller, which revolutionised music and video and fixed Jackson in culture as the King Of Pop. In The Studio With Michael Jackson is the chronicle of those times, when everything was about the music, the magic, and the amazing talent of a man who changed the face of pop music - and culture - forever. In his laid-back style, Bruce Swedien offers anecdotes about being part of Quincy Jones' extended 'family' and reveals the technical detail of creating Michael Jackson's biggest-selling albums, as well as Bad, Dangerous and HIStory. Including over 100 photos, In The Studio With Michael Jackson provides an insider's look that will thrill anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of hit making and the history of some of America's most influential music.
