by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $7,000 - $10,000

Description: BART VAN DER LECK (1876-1958) [DE RUITER.] 1919. 35x14 3/4 inches, 89x37 1/2 cm. W. Scherjon, Utrecht. Condition A: minor abrasions in margins and image. Initialed by the artist in pen in lower margin. Paper. Van der Leck was a painter, architect and graphic designer. Although much of his work, with its fragmented, minimalist and flat color elements, conforms to the tenets of De Stijl (and he did work with members of the group), he never formally signed their manifesto. He was totally uncompromising in his artistic views, which is why he never officially joined them in the first place, and why, after working with them for a short while, he ended up ultimately parting ways. For an exhibition of his own work in 1919 he created this poster which was taken from a painting he did the previous year for the St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge. "Van der Leck had employed many elements of De Stijl in his work for a number of years, such as the use of primary colours and a high degree of abstraction. But by depicting horse and rider in a more or less 'realistic' way and utilising the diagonal, the artist was opting here for a personal interpretation that was at odds with the attitudes of De Stijl" (www.stedelijkmuseum.nl). Although the poster was ultimately printed with text (stylized typography), versions were left without any lettering, perhaps for the artist to give to friends, as most of them are hand-initialed. Dutch 155 (var), Dutch Graphic Design p. 90, Muller-Brockmann 181 (var) .

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: KEES VAN DER LAAN (1903-1983) LEERT VLIEGEN. 1931. 31x43 inches, 80x110 cm. Kuhn & Zoon, Rotterdam. Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, restoration and restored losses at edges; abrasions and restoration in image. Van der Laan spent three formative years in Paris, 1924-1927, a time when French Art Deco was flourishing. His Art Deco sensibilities were further reinforced when, back in Holland, he encountered Cassandre's work for Dutch clients. Van der Laan's posters reflect his versatility with the airbrush and an affinity for transportation in the Machine Age. While many of his posters feature aircraft, this image is even more powerful, more geometric, and thanks to the horizontal format, more dynamic than most. One of two posters he designed for the National Flying School; the other is vertical and less striking. l'Histoire de l'Aviation p. 124-5.

The company was founded on 29 April 1870 and got its royal charter on 31 May 1870. It practiced fishing with lugger and other ships. Furthermore the company produced fishnet. The company was incorporated with a capital of 150,000 Gulden for a period of 25 years. The share capital was split into 150 shares at 1,000 Gulden each. W. H. van Meukeren, member of the supervisory board, was a very dubious person. He was attorney and notary in Rotterdam and cofounder of the "Broederschap van Kandidaat-Notarissen in Nederland" as well as member of the supervisory board respective shareholder in many companies which were incorporated in the founders boom (1870-1873). One example is the Noord-Brabantsch-Duitsche Spoorweg Maatschappij which was incorporated in Rotterdam in 1869. Van Meukeren was active in too many companies. This was the reason, why he sold only a few shares of Volharding. Only twelve shareholders bought shares in the company. This was the reason, why the Buergerlijke Maatschappij de Volharding was sold public through the villages Heinenoord, Barendrecht and Rhoonen in September 1871. These three villages are located at the Oude Maas, southern of Rotterdam. Volharding had the fishing licenses in this area of the Oude Maas. The Volharding was reorganized under the same name and with the same statutes. Some of the old shareholders kept invested. There were no new share certificates printed, the old ones were used again. As some new investors showed interest in the company, twelve shares were placed again. The structure of the ownership was unclear in 1893. Therefore a new "De Volharding" was incorporated in Lekkerkerk. The number of shares rose from twelve to 96 shares. The shares were held by 19 smaller and larger shareholders. With the director Cornelis Kersbergen, the bookkeeper Dirk Luijten and the member of the supervisory board Arie Smit (member of the Council of Elders at Staaten General, former major of Vlissingen and founder of the Smit dynasty) there was a very professional management team and the company developed successful. The leasing with the fishing rights at the Oude Maas was prolonged in 1895. The company paid an annual leasing rate of 2,916.75 Gulden. Several more fishing rights were bought or leased in the following time. The company boomed and paid 4,800 Gulden dividends in 1900. The fishing rights and the buildings of the company were sold for 10,000 to the government in 1929. The amount was not higher because the value of the fishing rights decreased. The river had almost no more salmon. The company was liquidated in 1933.Die Gesellschaft wurde am 29. Zudem stellte die Firma Fischernetze her. Countries:NiederlandeRegion:Europa
