Ed Parker Denver Police Badge and Police Documents Collection - Including 1970 Elvis Presley Mug Shot*

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $5,000

Description: From the collection of Darlene Parker Tafua, daughter of Ed and Leilani Parker.Highlighting this group of law enforcement related artifacts is Ed Parker's personal copy of the famous 1970 Elvis mug shot photo. Often mistaken as the "F.B.I. mug shot," the photo was likely taken to accompany a police badge Elvis received from the Denver Police Department in November 1970. Other photos from that day show Elvis wearing these exact clothes, down to the necktie he quickly borrowed during the visit in order to display the cufflink tie tack that the Denver police officers presented him with. Elvis had donated $5,500 to help outfit a gymnasium for the Denver police officers. Whether the mug shot was a necessary step demanded by the Denver PD to award the badge or just done on a lark, it left us with a truly iconic photo to treasure. The offered Denver Police Department Lieutenant's Badge, still in its original wallet with Ed Parker's Denver Police photo ID card, was awarded to Ed during a later visit to the Mile-High City with Elvis, in either 1973 or more likely 1976. Elvis took a liking to the Denver PD during the 1970s, often showering officers with jewelry and other expensive gifts. This became somewhat troublesome years later, and several police authorities were made to answer for what were determined to be gifts that should not have been accepted. Also included are three documents relating to Ed's 1983 appointment as "Commissioner of Tactical Self-Defense" and as a Deputy Sheriff of the Winnebago County (Illinois) Sheriff's Department. Included are his ID Card, certificate and a typewritten, signed letter from the Winnebago County Sheriff. All date from May 10, 1983. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Condition Report: The mug shot shows only slight toning and remains in Excellent condition. The badge shows appropriate wear from being stored in its wallet, with signs of black leather transfer to the highest points on its face. Very Good condition overall. The other included paper documents and ID card remain in Excellent condition.

Collection of Correspondence From Nick Adams to Colonel Tom Parker and Cowboy Boots Custom Made for the Colonel by Adams

by The Auction at Graceland

August 13, 2015, 7:00 PM CST

Memphis, TN, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Elvis met Nick Adams on the set of Love Me Tender and they became fast friends. Nick often visited Graceland and also became friendly with Colonel Parker as well. Nick was hungry for fame and success and had struggled to get on the path he was headed. He was known for keeping up with Hollywood society and never forgetting to write a note of thanks or congratulations to producers, directors and the Hollywood set as much as he was for his forward and rebellious ways. In 1959, Adams secured the starring role in the television series The Rebel. This wonderful collection of correspondence between Nick and the Colonel includes a very colorful letter from Nick dated February 12, 1959, in which Nick writes, "I can't thank you enough for the clipping you sent me and for all the snowing you did for me on your way back to Madison. Byron told me that every place you went all you did was say great things about Natalie, Bob and me, and I want you to know I sincerely think you are one of the greatest guys I have ever known, and one of the loyalest friends I have ever had. Natalie and Bob join me in saying that you have three friends here -- three friends that will always be there if you ever need help. That is no snow job." Nick continues touching on a variety of other subjects and mentions "I got a beautiful letter from Elvis which I will show you when you come out here. It is one of the nicest letters I have ever received from anyone and I am going to sit down right now and answer and tell him all about how you plugged him when you were here and how you always plugged him. I am also going to tell him how you refused to have a picture taken unless a still photo of Elvis was in the group shot too." He signed, "Your pal, #2 snower, Nick."On May 7, 1959, Nick sent a Western Union telegram to the Colonel to let him know that "I will be starring every Sunday night for Ligget and Meyers and Proctor and Gamble you can expect a check for three dollars which is your advisory fee now behind in payment for 3 years. I hope that my one dollar a year advisory fee will not be raised now that I will be working fulltime."Later that year, Nick sent another letter to the Colonel encouraging him to watch that week's show of The Rebel. This letter is on Paramount Pictures letterhead from the office of Nick Adams. The last letter in this marvelous collection is dated November 2, 1960, (almost an entire year from the aforementioned letter) on "Nick Adams, President Hondo Productions Paramount Studios" letterhead with a scene from the Battle of Gettysburg on the masthead. Nick writes, "Dear Colonel: I just wanted to drop you a note and show you my commission in the Georgia Militia. I'm having everyone around me address me by my new title....Colonel Adams. I must admit, I like the sound of it. Just as you are the Chief Potentate Snower, you are also the high ranking Colonel. I shall always be under your command, and I wouldn't want it any other way."In keeping with the friendly and fun banter that he shared with the Colonel, Nick also had a pair of black leather cowboy boots custom-made for the Colonel with tooling that reads, "Colonel Snow from The Rebel." A fitting title for each man and a great tribute to a wonderful friendship.Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated and original letter of authenticity from the 1999 Graceland Archives Auction. The correspondence is all framed for display with the largest measuring approximately 15 1/2 by 21 inches (39.37 x 53.34 cm). The boots measure approximately 17 inches (43.18 cm) in height.

Condition Report: The documents are in excellent condition overall. The February letter has the upper left corner torn and missing, likely from ripping apart from where it had been stapled. The telegram has evidence of tape residue in places. The letter on Paramount letterhead has two vertical crease lines and two hole punches on the left edge. The 1960 letter has two horizontal creases and two hole punches on the left side. The boots are in well loved condition with signs of use and wear in areas one would expect.
