[Revolutionary War]. Daniel Boone Document Signed

Lot 49019: [Revolutionary War]. Daniel Boone Document Signed

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $10,000

Description: [Revolutionary War]. Daniel Boone Document Signed as lieutenant in the Virginia Commonwealth militia. One page, 8" x 4.25", Fayette County [Kentucky], December 21, 1782. In this document, Lt. Boone and others secure the use of a horse to aid in the pursuit of Indians. Boone's signature is written in bold ink. The document is matted and framed with a transcription and image for an overall size of 24.5" x 28.5". Some unevenness and nicks along the edges. Age-toned paper bears some professional repairs on the reverse to fold separations (does not affect Boone's signature). The document reads in full: "We being first sworn have appraised one sorrel mare about fourteen hands high about eight years old branded on the right buttock IT to twenty five pounds the property of James Buchannan taken for the Commonwealth of Virginia from Buchannan Station to the upper Polen Licks on a scout after the Indians under the command of Capt. John Constant given under the hands this 21st day of Dec'ber 1782. [Signed] John Constant, Capt. [signed] Daniel Boone (Lt [signed] Nicolas Proctor [signed] James Little." Docketing on the reverse includes the following: "I certify that the within mare was lost. [Signed] John Constant, Capt." Boone served as a Fayette County militia officer during the Revolutionary War, receiving a promotion to lieutenant colonel two years before signing this document. In Kentucky (still part of Virginia in 1782), the war was mostly fought between American settlers and Indians, who received aid from the British. Even though General Cornwallis had surrendered the main British force at Yorktown when this document was written, fighting continued in Kentucky. Earlier in August 1782, Boone led about 180 American militiamen at the Battle of Blue Licks, where they were defeated by Indians and Loyalists.

Samuel Colt Autograph Letter Draft (unsigned), with a P

Lot 49056: Samuel Colt Autograph Letter Draft (unsigned), with a P

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,000

Description: Samuel Colt Autograph Letter Draft (unsigned), with a Peter Colt Bond Signed. Samuel Colt's unsigned draft is on one ruled page (8" x 10") written from Washington on February 26, 1834, to Dudley Selden of Washington concerning a shipment of goods. In part, the firearms maker writes, "If I avere to ship the goods now in my possession to New York by the next transportation line they would not reach there untill after I do[?]." With folds and minor staining. A large "X" is marked through the text. Docketed on the verso. Samuel Colt (1814-1862) received his first firearm patent one year after writing this draft. Dudley Selden (1794-1855), his cousin, later extended a loan to Colt, who used the loan to form a corporation in 1836 to produce his firearms. Selden gave other loans to Colt, though he occasionally chastised the manufacturer for profligacy. Peter Colt (1744-1824), father of Samuel Colt, signs the Connecticut Treasury bond as state treasurer in a large, bold hand (8" x 3.75", June 1, 1782 [the date is printed on the document]). Peter Colt, the great-uncle of Samuel Colt, served as the Connecticut State Treasurer from 1790 until 1794. Age toning with an irregularly cut left edge. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.

Extremely Rare Factory Documented Historical Confederate Colt Fluted Cylinder Model 1860 Army Revolver

Lot 263: Extremely Rare Factory Documented Historical Confederate Colt Fluted Cylinder Model 1860 Army Revolver

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $8,500 - $13,000

Description: Extremely Rare Factory Documented Historical Confederate Colt Fluted Cylinder Model 1860 Army Revolver Rare and historic Confederate Fluted Cylinder Colt Model 1860 Army revolver issued to Company A, 2nd Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry (Jeff Davis Legion). The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that states it was one of 160 pistols shipped from Colt to "Wm. T. Martin" in Natchez, Mississippi, on January 17, 1861. The letter states that the revolvers were furnished with 80 flasks, 80 attachable breech stocks and 80 holsters. Documents that accompany the revolver indicate that William T. Martin was a Natchez attorney who raised the "Adams Troop" of militia cavalry in 1860. With the outbreak of war in 1861 Martin took command of the Adams Troop designated Company A, 2nd Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry. Companies A, B and C of the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry were ordered to proceed independently to Virginia in August 1861, and were organized into the Jeff Davis Legion, Army of Northern Virginia. Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Martin, the Jeff Davis Legion accompanied Major General J.E.B. Stuart in his ride around the Army of the Potomac in August 1862. After the raid Martin was promoted to Colonel on Stuart's recommendation. The Jeff Davis Legion served with distinction as part of Hampton's Brigade during the Sharpsburg Campaign. Following Sharpsburg, Col. Martin was promoted to Brigadier General and transferred to the west where he commanded a brigade of Mississippi Cavalry. Colonel Fred J. Waring took command of the Jeff Davis Legion. Under Col. Waring, the Legion and 2nd Mississippi Cavalry fought with distinction at the battles of Brandy Station, Upperville, Gettysburg, Culpepper, Trevillian Station, Ream's Station and other engagements. In 1865 the Legion was assigned to Logan's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee in 1865. It is well established that Samuel Colt shipped revolvers to the Southern states until the actual outbreak of hostilities in April 1861. Many of these pistols were early production, Model 1860 Army revolvers with fluted cylinders. However, examples of Colt revolvers that can be documented as issued to Confederate forces are rare. Colt manufactured an estimated 4000 fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army revolvers; a fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army revolver documented as issued to a Confederate unit like this example is extremely rare. Just as significantly, the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry served with distinction in some of the most important cavalry actions in the Civil War. The revolver has a four-screw frame with stock cuts in the recoil shields and the bottom of the back strap. The 8 inch barrel is roll-stamped with the scarce, "- ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.- " legend. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1850" is roll-stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number, "1620" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, cylinder pin, trigger guard, back strap and in one cylinder flute. The partial serial number, "620" is stamped on the wedge. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a brass trigger guard, steel back strap and one-piece walnut grip. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1860 Army BBL: 8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1620 Class: Antique Condition: About good. Except for three replacement screws and revarnished grips, the revolver is correct and shows wear expected of a weapon that saw four years of wartime service. The barrel has a dark patina with scattered light pitting and numerous minor dents and scratches. There are a number of dents surrounding the wedge slot. The cylinder safety pins are battered and the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder have moderate-heavy flash pitting. The frame, hammer and back strap have the same silver gray patina as the barrel and cylinder with scattered dents and scratches. The extended stock screws have been replaced. The stock screws and the cylinder locking bolt screw are replacements. The revarnished grip is in fair condition with moderate handling wear. The barrel legend, cylinder and frame markings and serial numbers are all clear. This is an extremely rare, documented, Confederate Colt Fluted Cylinder Model 1860 Army revolver that almost certainly was carried throughout the Civil War by a member of the famous and hard fighting Jeff Davis Legion.

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: William Henry Harrison Autograph Document Signed "Wm. H. Harrison / Aid de Camp." One page, 6.5" x 4.25", "H.Q. Greeneville [Ohio]," August 21, 1795. While serving as General "Mad Anthony" Wayne's aide-de-camp, the future president writes, "The commissary will issue for the Cherokees twelve pounds of beef & flour and one quart of whiskey." Earlier in 1794, General Wayne's troops, which included Harrison (a lieutenant at the time), defeated the Western Confederacy of American Indian tribes at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, bringing an end to the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795). (Cherokees, the recipients of this supply order, fought with the Western Confederacy.) Eighteen days before writing this order, Harrison had served with General Wayne as a signatory at the Treaty of Greenville, which included annual grants of federal supplies and money to the Indian tribes. In return, the U.S. received most of modern-day Ohio. This document bears minor soiling. The text and signature are very clear and bold.

Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed

Lot 49127: Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,500

Description: Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed "U.S. Grant" as ad interim secretary of war. One partially-printed page with integral blank, 8" x 10.25", on War Department letterhead, Washington, August 14, 1867. Here, Grant informs Asa Blunt that he has been appointed "for meritorious services during the War, a Colonel, by Brevet, in the service of the United States." Folds. Edwin Stanton, who had served as secretary of war throughout the Civil War, disagreed with President Andrew Johnson's plan to allow those states who had been in rebellion to rejoin the Union without guaranteeing the rights of the newly freed slaves. In response, Johnson replaced Stanton with Grant on an ad interim basis. Stanton refused his dismissal and played a leading role in the impeachment against Johnson. When Johnson's impeachment failed by one vote, Stanton resigned. Asa P. Blunt (1826-1889) served in three Vermont regiments during the Civil War. First as adjutant to the 3rd Vermont, then as lieutenant colonel in the 6th Vermont, and as colonel of the 12th Vermont. In October 1862, he assumed temporary command of the 2nd Vermont Brigade, a position he would hold again after the capture of brigade commander General Edwin H. Stoughton. He mustered out of service in July 1863, but reenlisted as a captain in the Quartermaster's Department six months later. In March 1865, he was given a brevet promotion to brigadier general. He remained in the army after the war and served as commandant of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, between 1877 and 1888.
