Lot 6: "Liberty without End. Amen."

by Keno Auctions

January 31, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $20,000

Description: “Liberty without End. Amen.” [SONS OF LIBERTY.] William Russell. Autograph document, Boston, Massachusetts, August 14, 1769, 1 p., with additional writing on verso. These patriotic toasts—written on the fourth anniversary of Boston’s Stamp Act Riot—defiantly salute American liberty. The writer may have numbered among the 350 Sons of Liberty who celebrated the event at a dinner in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He would have been in good company: John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Adams were among the guests. “ Two of the toasts"—“May the Sons of Liberty Shine With Lustre” and “Liberty without End. Amen.”— need no explanation. However, two others beg explanation: “Wilks 45” refers to British parliamentarian John Wilkes, who was jailed in 1763 for publishing an incendiary criticism of the King in volume 45 of his journal, The North Briton. “45” became a colonial rallying cry, as seen twice on the hat of one figure in the framed image. “Wilkes 45” gained a counterpart in the “American 92,” referring to the 92 Massachusetts legislators who rejected the Royal governor’s demand they repeal a letter opposing the Stamp Act’s despised successor, the Townshend Acts. Estimate $20,000 – 30,000 The much hated Stamp Act of 1765, Britain’s first attempt to impose a direct tax on the colonies, spawned the seeds of revolution in America. Cries of “Taxation Without Representation” echoed through the streets, stamp distributors were burned in effigy, and British goods were boycotted. That spirit of rebellion gave rise to the Sons of Liberty, a secretive group of patriots dedicated to opposing British tyranny. On August 14, 1765, an effigy of stamp distributor Andrew Oliver was found hanging from a tree in the middle of Boston. It was one of the first acts of the Sons of Liberty. A large crowd gathered at the scene, parading through town with the effigy and burning it, before proceeding to attack Oliver’s home. British authorities had been put on notice: the citizens of Boston would stand up for their rights. Thanks in part to the riot, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act the next year. August 14 became the unofficial birthday of the Sons of Liberty. In 1769, 350 members of the group attended a great dinner under a tent at the Liberty Tree Tavern in Dorchester. The revelers flew flags, played music, fired cannons, and offered up 45 toasts to everything from “All true Patriots throughout the World” to “The Speedy Removal of all Task Masters.” Among the attendees were John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Adams. The latter recorded the event in his diary: Dined with 350 Sons of Liberty at Robinsons, the Sign of Liberty Tree in Dorchester. We had two Tables laid in the open Field by the Barn … After Dinner was over and the Toasts drank we were diverted with Mr. Balch’s Mimickry … We had also the Liberty Song … and the whole Company joined in the Chorus. This is cultivating the Sensations of Freedom. There was a large Collection of good Company. Otis and Adams are politick, in promoting these Festivals, for they tinge the Minds of the People, they impregnate them with the sentiments of Liberty. They render the People fond of their Leaders in the Cause, and averse and bitter against all opposers. (Adams, August 14, 1769 Diary entry) This document was found in the papers of William Russell (1748-1784), a schoolteacher, early member of the Sons of Liberty and Boston Tea Party participant. The writing on the verso, comprising the word “Answer” followed by several monetary figures, suggests that the toasts were drafted on a page from an old exercise book. Russell may have written all or part of the document. In June 1777, Russell joined the Massachusetts artillery, with the rank of sergeant major and afterward adjutant. Following service in the Rhode Island campaign, Russell signed up as clerk on the Jason, commanded by Captain John Manley of Marblehead. The ship was captured on her first cruise, in September 1779, by the British frigate Surprise, and captain and crew were confined to Mill Prison in Plymouth, England. Russell whiled away his time there by conducting classes for the younger members of the captured American crews. His journal from that period is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. Russell was exchanged almost three years later, and returned to Boston in June aboard the cartel ship Lady’s [sometimes spelled Ladies’] Adventure. Three weeks after that, he re-entered the naval service, only to be recaptured by the British in November. This time Russell was incarcerated in the prison ship Jersey. He was released, for a second time, in March of 1783. After one more brief stint at sea, Russell returned to teach school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His health shattered after his long imprisonment, Russell died of consumption in March of 1784.

Carved Model of CT Navy Ship Oliver Cromwell

by Ahlers & Ogletree Inc.

February 8, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Atlanta, GA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $4,000

Description: American, circa 1800's. Hand carved and painted model of the Connecticut navy Brig, the Oliver Cromwell carved by Samuel Chapman of the Connecticut Navy, 2nd Lieutenant commissioned May 1777 to serve on the ship Oliver Cromwell commanded by Captain William Coit, documented on page 56 from the "Naval Officers of the American Revolution: A Concise Biographical Dictionary" by Charles E. Claghorn. On June 13, 1776, the ship Oliver Cromwell, built by Uriah Hayden, was launched in Essex. The ship was one of the largest full-rigged ships built for the state after the establishment of Connecticut's navy. The Navy was formed after the start of the American Revolutionary War in July of 1775 when the Connecticut General Assembly authorized Governor Jonathan Trumbull and the Council of Safety to purchase and outfit two armed vessels. The General Assembly later authorized the purchase of more ships including the construction of the Oliver Cromwell. All of the ships of the Connecticut Navy were captured or destroyed by 1779. The Oliver Cromwell, in its service to the Navy, captured nine British ships, the first being the brig Honour, before it was itself captured in July 1779 off Sandy Hook by three British ships and a brig after a two-hour battle.Provenance: From the Collection of historian Arthur E. Chapman, Woodstock, Georgia.

GREAT SEAL OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES, IN SILVER, BOXED

Lot 877: GREAT SEAL OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES, IN SILVER, BOXED

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

February 11, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: GREAT SEAL OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES, IN SILVER, BOXED The Great Seal of the Confederate States in silver, 3 1/2" diameter, featuring George Washington in the center (modeled after an equestrian statue in Richmond), surrounded by a wreath of Confederate products (wheat, cotton, tobacco, corn, sugar and rice) and the text: "THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA : 22 FEBRUARY 1862" and "DEO VINDICE" around the exterior. Set in a glass topped frame in a red leather case with yellow felt lining. Case covering is worn, the seal and frame are in fine condition. Ordered by the Confederacy to serve as both a means to emboss documents and to lend themselves credibility as a government, the original Great Seal of the Confederacy was engraved in England, and smuggled in-country via Bermuda circa 1864. As the embossing machine never left Bermuda, the Seal saw little use, and was eventually smuggled out of Richmond by one William Bromwell, disbursing clerk with the Confederate State Department, along with the contents of the State Department Archives. Nearly a decade later, in 1872, Bromwell, by way of John T. Pickett, former Confederate Commissioner to Mexico, arranged for the sale of the Confederate Archive to the U.S. Government. At the close of the deal, Pickett gave the Seal as a gift to Lieutenant (later Admiral) Thomas O. Selfridge, USN, the Government representative for the transaction. A year later, Pickett borrowed the seal from Selfridge and took it to one Samuel H. Black of New York who produced a series of electrotype copies in gold, silver and bronze directly from the original seal. Pickett returned the original to Selfridge, and made a hefty income selling his copies as originals.

Superb 1786 JOHN ADAMS Autograph Letter Signed as Minister to Great Britain

Lot 1: Superb 1786 JOHN ADAMS Autograph Letter Signed as Minister to Great Britain

by Early American

February 14, 2015, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $35,000 - $40,000

Description: AutographsExtraordinary John Adams Letter Regarding the Broken State of Relations Between the United States and Great Britain Following the American Revolutionary WarJOHN ADAMS (1735 - July 4, 1826). 2nd President of the United States (1797-1801), American Founding Father, Lawyer, Statesman, Diplomat and Leading Champion of American Independence in 1776, Defended the British Soldiers involved in the "Boston Massacre," a Leading Federalist. In 1785, John Adams was appointed the First American Minister to the Court of St. James's (Ambassador to Great Britain).June 3, 1786-Dated Extraordinary Content, Autograph Letter Signed, "John Adams" as the American Minister to Great Britain, 3 pages, measuring 6.5" x 8", at London, Choice Very Fine. This historic Letter is written to Dr. Samuel Williams, who was the Hollis Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at Harvard, under whom Adams' sons, John Quincy and Charles, were studying. John Adam's handwriting is excellent, being easily readable in rich brown ink upon clean laid period paper. There are some trivial separation at fold intersections, overall being exceptional in its appearance and eye appeal. Here, John Adams, as the American Minister to Great Britain, pens in full: "London June 3. 1786 --- Sir --- I am much obliged to you for your Letter of the 9 of April. The Memoirs of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, shall be sent to Sir Joseph Banks, and the other Packet to Manheim.I am much more at ease in my own Mind to have my Sons with you, than I should be to have them here with me, or at any other University and nothing can give me more satisfaction than to hear, that they behave with Propriety. Dr. Gordon's voyage to England, and his Intention of remaining here, have probably diminished the Number of Subscribers in America, and I much doubt whether he will meet that encouragement in Europe which he expects. Nobody thrives, no Book will sell in this Country, unless it is encouraged by the Court, and the Dr's History be it what it may, will never be cherished there. The Court and the Nation would be glad to have the whole story blotted out of Memory. There is a general Disposition to prevent every American Work and Character from acquiring Celebration. Every Thing American is so unpopular, that even Printers and Booksellers are afraid of disobliging their Customers, by having any thing to do with it. Nothing of the kind will sell in Prose or Verse. I am sorry to say that it appears to me the Seperation between the two Nations must and will be final and perpetual in affection as well as in Laws. This, which is false Policy in this Country, will be ultimately its destruction, and make it a Signal Example to the World. It is a pity that because a People has been divided in halves, that the two Parts should be destined to be forever Rivals and Enemies at heart, and I cannot say that our own Countrymen, have in all Things acted a rational Part. Yet I do think it has been and is in the Power of this Cabinet, to restore a real Friendship between the two Peoples. But I think now there is very little chance of it because those very Men who acquired their Fame, Popularity and Power by professing friendship to us are now at least as bitter against us and the others. All this however should not prevent us from doing our Duty, in all Points. We shall find our interest in it at last. --- With great Respect and Esteem I have the Honour to be, Sir, your most obedient and humble Servant -- (Signed) John Adams"John Adams, 1735-1826, Second President of the United States from 1797-1801. A lawyer and early supporter of the independence movement, Adams defended the British soldiers accused of the Boston Massacre. In the Continental Congress, he helped Jefferson and Franklin draft the Declaration of Independence, which he signed. In 1785, John Adams was appointed the first American minister to the Court of St. James's (ambassador to Great Britain). As Washington's Vice President, he founded the Federalist Party. Elected President in 1796, his term was marked by problems like the XYZ Affair with France, as well as the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts. In his retirement, he carried on an extensive correspondence, and saw his son, John Quincy Adams, elected as the sixth President. He died at the age of ninety on July 4, 1826.
