SAMUEL HUNTINGTON as Continental Congress President, Signer of the Declaration

by Early American

May 21, 2016, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000

Description: Autographs"Sam'l Huntington, President," Signed as President of the Continental Congress & Prior Signer of the Declaration of Independence From Connecticut the First "U.S. President"SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796). President of the Continental Congress, Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut, served as President (September 28, 1779 to February 28, 1781), thus... after the Articles of Confederation were ratified, he was "technically" the First President of the United States of America (March 1-July 6, 1781). March 2, 1779-Dated Revolutionary War, Partially-Printed Document Signed, "Sam'l Huntington, President," 1 page, measuring 6.5" x 10.5", Very Fine. This official form being boldly engraved for the Continental Congress is printed in rich black on Vellum (sheep skin parchment), completed in in manuscript, full intact embossed paper and red wax Seal. Minor wear, folds. Signed by Huntington as President of the Continental Congress, his Signature in dark brown, somewhat unevenly so (as ink dries on the surface and does not soak into Vellum, as it would on regular paper). Continental Congress Military Appointment made to, "Joseph Washburn" (1755-1807) who joined his father's company of Massachusetts Minutemen in April 1775 and served at Bunker Hill, having a long military service (which is presented in full, in our expanded online lot description). Docket and added notation worn and faded being on the blank verso Signed, "Tench Tilghman," American Revolutionary War Officer, and George Washington's personal Aide-de-camp. Signature, "Sam'l Huntington, President," measures a huge 4.5" long, with "Tench Tilghman" on the verso measuring 3" long. Made to a Patriot Minutemen who actually fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Very historic and Rare.Scroll Down Below - Tench Tilghman and Joseph Washburn Historical Information:Tench Tilghman (1744 - 1786) was an Officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He served as an Aide de camp to General George Washington, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.Tilghman rose to become a trusted member of Washington's staff. The historic events of the time sparked his transformation from a privileged family member of Loyalists to a dedicated Patriot. He paid a high price, facing tragedies including a split with Loyalist members of his family, and illness and an early death from disease contracted during the American Revolutionary War.The Siege of Yorktown in October 1781 culminated in a Patriot victory and an honor for Tilghman, whom Washington picked to carry the Surrender Papers to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Poets Dr. Oliver Huchel and Howard Pyle each considered Tilghman a hero for that ride. Tilghman's own journal entry was terse:In the morning Lord Cornwallis put out a letter requesting 24 hours must be granted to the commissioners to settle terms of capitulation of the posts of York and Gloster. The General answered that only two hours would be allowed for him to send out his terms. He accordingly sent them out generally as follows, that the Garrisons should be prisoners of war, the German and British soldiers to be sent to England and Germany. The General answered on the 18th that the terms of sending the troops to England and Germany were inadmissible. Lord Cornwallis closed with all the terms except the same honors granted at Charlestown. In a letter to Tilghman the following year, Washington's humor and admiration is apparent:"Till your letter of the 28th arrived which is the first from you and the only direct account of you since we departed at Philadelphia, we have various conjectures about you. Some thought you were dead-others that you were married-and all that you have forgot us. Your letter is not a more evident contradiction of the first and last of these suppositions than it is a tacit conformation of the second and as more can wish you greater success in the prosecution of the plan you are upon than I do...you have no friend who wishes more to see you than I do."JOSEPH WASHBURN (1755-1807), was born at Leicester, Massachusetts 18 May 1755 died there 27 March 1807. Joseph was the son of Seth and Mary (Hubbard) Washburn. He married at Charlton, Massachusetts 6 May 1787 to Ruth Davis. She was born at Charlton 8 October 1765 died at Leicester, Mass. 22 March 1827, aged 62 yrs. Ruth was a daughter of Ebenezer and Deborah (Davis) Davis of Charlton.Joseph Washburn joined his father's company of Minutemen in April 1775 and served at Bunker Hill. The following sketch for his service in the Revolutionary War appears in "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War":Joseph Washburn, Leicester. List of men raised to serve in the Continental Army from North co. in Leicester, as returned by Capt. Loring Lincoln; residence, Leicester; engaged for town of Leicester; joined Capt. Martyn's co., Col. Bigelow's Regt.; term to expire Feb. -, 1780; also, Ensign and Lieutenant, Col. Estimate: $1,200 - $1,500

Description: Ship's Passport signed in full by the 5th and 6th U.S. Presidents, James Monroe and John Quincy AdamsJAMES MONROE (1758-1831) JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767-1848) Party Printed Document Signed "James Monroe" as President and "John Quincy Adams" as Secretary of State, 1p, 10" x 13.75", Washington, no date, but 1817-1825 . Scalloped top edge. Ships Papers signed in blank, not filled in. On vellum. Since this document was never issued, the seal was evidentially removed by the Collector of the Port. Two heavy horizontal folds ,other folds, one passing vertically through first "o" in Pres. Monroe's dark signature. Two vignettes at top center, one depicting a clipper ship, the other, beneath it, a seascape with lighthouse near a town with numerous ships pictured. Fine condition. This document was signed in blank in Washington, D.C., by President Monroe and Secretary of State Adams to be sent to a United States port to be filled out, signed, and issued from there by the Collector of the Port. The Collector, or an assistant, would fill in the name of the ship and all the required information.John Quincy Adams was James Monroe's only Secretary of State, serving from 1817 until 1825 when he succeeded Madison as President. It is probable that when Ships Papers signed in blank by Monroe's and Adams' successors, John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, reached a Collector, he put aside the blank Monroe/Adams Ships Papers and replaced them with the newly signed Adams/Clay documents, although the previously signed ones could also have been legally used.In full, "By the President of the United States of America Suffer the ____ master or commander of the burthen of ____ tons or thereabouts mounted with ____ guns navigated with ____ men To Pass with her ____ Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance seisure or molestation the said ____ appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only. Declaration of Independence Signer Samuel Chase DS re Jewish Merchants case

by University Archives

May 19, 2016, 10:30 AM EST

Westport, CT, USA

Estimate: $2,500 - $3,000

Description: A twice-signed document by Signer of the Declaration of Independence Samuel Chase billing his client for cases in several civil actions, two of which involved several important early American Jewish merchantsSAMUEL CHASE (1741-1811) Autograph Document Signed, "Saml. Chase," 1 page, 7.5" x 4.25", [Baltimore], June 29, 1790, an invoice for legal services performed on behalf several clients in October 1788. With an additional Autograph Endorsement Signed, "Saml Chase," on the docket. Neatly laid in to a larger sheet, expected folds and very light soiling, else fine. The invoice, directed to "Mr. Mark Pringle," for [$]1200 or "If paid in Money £6", itemizes three appearances made in "General Court" by Chase in October 1788. The first case, involved Isaac Moses (c. 1742-1816), a prominent New York City Merchant one of the founders of the Bank of North America in 1781. (New-York Journal, May 23, 1771, 352, et al )The other individual named in the first action, Samuel Myers, was the distant cousin and business partner of Moses Myers, who, together with Samuel, are named in the second case that Chase itemizes. Moses Myers (d. 1835) was born in New York and early in the Revolutionary War served briefly in New York's second battalion. After he left military service, Moses established a trading yours with Samuel Myers, based in Amsterdam and St. Eustatia. The partnership ran into trouble around 1784 during the general business depression that followed the end of the American Revolution and the pair were forced to stop payment on their debts. (This may have been the circumstance that led Pringle to take action against the firm). The partners reorganized and continued in business. In 1787, Moses moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he spent the remainder of his life as a merchant. ("The Meyers Family," Chrysler Museum of Art, Website)Based on newspaper notices, it appears that all three gentlemen, Isaac Moses, Samuel Myers and Moses Myers ran a firm known as Isaac Moses & Co. which was originally based in Philadelphia and had moved to New York around 1784. That firm was dissolved in 1785. To make matters ever the more confusing, the three operated a separate partnership under the name Samuel and Moses Myers operating in St. Eustatia and Amsterdam. That partnership also dissolved in 1785. (Daily Advertiser, New York, Nov. 28, 1784, 3).Mark Pringle (3. 1819)was a Baltimore merchant dealing in general merchandise as well as rum, molasses and sugar. he first appears in the newspapers around 1774 offering a wide variety of imported goods. He appears to have flourished, eventually purchasing a country house at Havre-de-Grace at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. He continued in business in Baltimore until his death. (Maryland Journal, Baltimore, Apr. 5, 1775, 4; Ibid, Jan. 26, 1787, 3; Ibid, Dec. 9, 1788, 4; Evening Post, New York, Jan. 13, 1819, 2).

Signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution, Patriot of the American Revolutionary War and known as the "Financier of the Revolution," United States Senator from Pennsylvania. One of only a few Patriots who Signed All Three Founding Documents!March 24, 1783-Dated Revolutionary War Partly-Printed Document (in French) Signed, "Robt. Morris," at Philadelphia, (PA), measuring 4" x 9.5", Very Fine. A rare 30-Day Bill of Exchange, the Eighth Sight, ordering payment of the sum of 1900 Livres Tournois to Daniel Parker, on the account of the United States (Continental Congress) in Paris. Daniel Parker fled a failing business to France in 1784. He was an acquaintance of John Adams, and assisted Thomas Jefferson's ministerial efforts in Paris, France in 1787.This important fiscal form is printed in black on fine quality thin laid paper. There is some humidity tone at right edge and is somewhat irregular with ragged right and left margins. Morris' name is written in brown, measuring 2.75" long at the bottom right. Robert Morris was a Philadelphia merchant and financial entrepreneur who procured significant amounts of money and supplies for General George Washington and his Continental Army troops. He was a member of the Continental Congress (1775-78) and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. At the time he signed this document, he was superintendent of finance under the Articles of Confederation for the fledgling United States (1781-84). He was financially ruined by speculation in western lands; imprisoned for debt (1798), he died in Philadelphia in poverty and obscurity. Extremely Rare.During the American Revolutionary War, Massachusetts merchant and speculator Daniel Parker was a partner of William Duer and John Holker in the firm Daniel Parker & Co.Escaping the consequences of his failed speculations with company funds, Parker fled to Europe in 1784, where he cultivated the friendship of influential persons and continued to promote his business schemes. Carrying introductions from William Stephens Smith and John Adams, Parker made Thomas Jefferson's acquaintance in Paris in 1787. The two men remained in contact for the remainder of Thomas Jefferson's tenure in France, with Parker frequently carrying letters or undertaking errands for the American Minister, as well as providing advice on fiscal matters or seeking Thomas Jefferson's support for his financial ventures. Parker went bankrupt in 1791 and never returned to America.
