CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN ARMORIAL PLATE FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET AND FROM THE WILLIAM ALEXANDER SERVICE, CIRCA 1770.

by Northeast Auctions

August 16, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Portsmouth, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Painted and gilt with the arms of Alexander, Earl of Stirling, quartering MacDonald beneath a beaver crest and earl's coronet, flanked by supporters above the motto "PER MARE PER TERRAS," the well surrounded by a green and gold husk band, the rim with a bamboo border festooned with flowers and within a green sawtooth edge. Width 9 inches.A year after his father's death in 1757, William Alexander (1726-1783) briefly returned to England to assume the title of Earl of Stirling. He continued to use the title even after the House of Lords decided he needed to further prove his claim. He returned to America, where he became prosperous and eventually President of Columbia University.Known to the British and American armies as General Lord Stirling, he commanded the American forces, was captured at the Battle of Long Island in 1776, and fought at Princeton, Trenton and Valley Forge as Major General.Literature: David Sanctuary Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," vol. II, p. 264, N6. Howard notes that "He must have ordered this Chinese armorial service about 1770, but by the time it reached London it was probably 1775, and in April that year he became a Brigadier General in Washington's army. The service was almost certainly impounded and he probably never saw it." See also Howard, "China for the West," vol. II, pp. 487 and 488, n. 500; similar plates are illustrated in Thomas V. Litzenburg, Jr. and Ann T. Bailey, "Chinese Export Porcelain in the Reeves Center Collection at Washington and Lee University," p. 118, cat. n. 106; Howard, "New York and the China Trade," p. 70, n. A20; and in Forbes, p. 51, n. 101.

by National Book Auctions

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Title: The Plays of William Shakespeare, Accurately Printed from the Text of the Corrected Copies Left by the Late George Stevens, Esq., and Edmond Malone, Esq., with Mr. Malone's Various Readings; A Selection of Explantory and Historical Notes, from the Most Eminent Commentators; A History of the State, and a Life of ShakespeareAuthor: Alexander Chalmers - Alexander Chalmers was a Scottish writer. He was born in Aberdeen. Trained as a doctor, he gave up medicine for journalism, and was for some time editor of the Morning Herald. Besides editions of the works of William Shakespeare, James Beattie, Henry Fielding, Samuel Johnson, Joseph Warton, Alexander Pope, Edward Gibbon, and Henry St John, Viscount Bolingbroke, he published A "General Biographical Dictionary" in 32 volumes (1812–1817); a "Glossary to Shakspeare" (1807); an edition of George Steevens's "Shakespeare" (1809); and the "British Essayists," beginning with the "Tatler" and ending with the "Observer," with biographical and historical prefaces and a general index.A quotation is often attributed to him: "The three grand essentials of happiness are: Something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for."His papers are held at the National Library of Scotland. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia), William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon.” His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the 16th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including “Hamlet”, “King Lear,” “Othello,” and “Macbeth”, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognized as Shakespeare's.Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry." In the 20th century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.Publisher: Printed for F. C. and J. 2015

USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DICKENS, CHARLES Autographed letter signed ("Charles Dickens"), two pages, Devonshire Terrace, April 1, 1850. In this letter, Dickens (1812-1870) writes to Georgina Ross, a distant relative of his, regarding financial assistance for the author and playwright John Poole. At this time, Poole was elderly and in dire financial straits. Dickens and several friends including Edward Bulwer Lytton and John Forster sought to help Poole and other authors in similar situations. In the present letter, Dickens tells Ross that he had recently contacted Lord John Russell about a small pension for Poole and that he thinks it would be inappropriate to bring the matter up again. Dickens continued to independently reach out to Lord Russell and by December of 1850 Dickens had ensured that Poole would be granted a regular pension from the beginning of 1851 through June of that year. Darkening to page one; horizontally creased in thirds.
