Autograph album containing over 150 items Signed, or Signed and Inscribed, by prominent mostly Civil War-period politicians, generals, writers, artists, and others, including Autograph Letters, Autograph Quotations, Autograph Notes, and drawings. The letters and notes, mostly to the first wife of General Egbert Ludovicus Viele, dated 1861-64. Also included are two small fragments from the confederate flag which flew over Fort Pulaski and which was torn down in April, 1862, by Union soldiers under the command of General E.L. Montagu/Lord of the Manor/of Oakley/son of Sir Ed. Montagu" oil on canvas, unframed h:115 w: 86 cm Provenance: The Dukes of Manchester, Kimbolton Castle sale, 18 July 1949, Lot 196, "Jansen - Portrait of William Montague". William Montagu was the son of Sir Edward Montagu - the 8th son and 11th child. His father was a member of Henry VIII's Privy Council. He was Lord of the Manor of Little Oakley in Northamptonshire - the last lord of the village as after his death the house fell into disrepair.

Condition Report: Red stamp on the back of the canvas - "Kimbolton Castle Heirloom 134" . Unframed. Relined. Areas of wear and abrasion in dark paint passages. Face has more than one campaign of retouching.

The very well executed painting is possibly by or after Ambrosious Bosschaert. Paper labels affixed to the back of the panel read: Spanish 17th Century Flower Painting" and another label reads: Fomerly in Lord Leverhulme Collection - To Miss Kallberg - From Marie Sterner Lintott 1949.The panel has been broken and reglued and there is some touch up from frame edge wear. Framed in modern gilt rococo frame. Painting measures 16.7 inches high and 12.4 inches wide, and with the frame 19.6 inches by 24 inches.
