J.E. Barre, Representing him engaged in the Grand Match played in the Tennis Court - Lords Cricket Ground July 3rd 1849

by Arader Galleries

June 13, 2015, 1:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: William Bromley. Mezzotint engraving. London: J.H. Dark, 1849. 27 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches, 39 x 31 3/4 inches framed. An Exceptionally Rare Print of J. Edmond Barre: The Greatest 19th Century Court Tennis Player. The Frenchman, J. Edmond Barre, is considered to be the greatest nineteenth-century player of the game of "court tennis." The son of a tennis professional in Grenoble and Paris, he first came to notice as a tennis player in the late 1820's, when the restored French royal court revived the game. Barre was so talented, that he was the World Champion from 1829 to 1862 when he finally succumbed, at the age of 60, to the 36 year old Englishman Edmund Tomkins. The present engraving shows him playing at the court at Lord's Cricket Ground in 1849 at which time he remained undefeated. In 1855, Barre famously re-opened the Versailles court after he became royal paumier (tennis professional) to the Emperor Napoleon III. It was here that the renowned Tiers Etat met on June 20, 1789, and took the celebrated "Oath of the tennis-court," essentially starting the French Revolution. His career was only ended by the Franco Prussian War and the Siege of Paris, leaving him to die impoverished.

New Orleans Sterling Silver Two-Handled Cup

by New Orleans Auction Galleries

May 31, 2015, 10:00 AM CST

New Orleans, LA, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $900

Description: New Orleans Presentation Sterling Silver Two-Handled Cup, dated 1918, by Gorham Mfg. Co., Providence, Rhode Island, of traditional ovoid form with arched handles and ogee-domed foot, with presentation inscription: "Alexander Sirjacques / from the / Employees and Directors / of / A.B. Griswold & Co. Ltd. / as a Testimony / of Appreciation for Faithful Service / During Nearly a Half Century / April 30, 1918", h. 10-3/4", dia. 6", w. 10", 18.12 t. oz. Alexander Charles Sirjacques was born in Baden, Germany on November 1, 1841, the son of Alexander Sirjacques and Wilhelmina Lemperich. Although born in Germany, he was of French ancestry, the grandson of Henri Sirjacques (1754-1835), who saw service during the American Revolution as the Paymaster of the French Corps du Lauzun. Sirjacques moved with his family to New Orleans in 1852, presumably (as so many other German families) to escape the political upheaval on the continent in the late 1840's. On May 14, 1866 he married Katherine Pfeffer (1848-1922), and was by that time presumably trained and working as a jeweler; he is listed as such in the 1867 New Orleans Directory at 126 St. Mary Street. He was naturalized as an American Citizen on April 6, 1868. On September 1, 1872 he was hired by A. B. Griswold: far and away the largest jewelry and silver business in Reconstruction-era New Orleans, and successors to the antebellum firm Hyde & Goodrich. As evidenced by this handsome cup presented to him the day before his retirement on May 1, 1918, he worked there for the next thirty-six years. He died in New Orleans on January 5, 1923 and was interred in Lafayette Cemetery #2. He and Katherine were survived by three children: Earhart C. Sirjacques (1867-1953), Emilia O. Sirjacques (1874-1962), and Alice Sirjacques (Mrs. Jesse J.) Lobrano (1876-1955).

He was made Brigadier General by Washington at the end of the war.The Society of the Cincinnati was founded near Newburgh, New York in 1783 by Continental Army officers who fought in the American Revolution. Within a year, affiliated Societies were founded in all 13 of the original states and France. George Washington was elected the first President in December 1783 and served until his death in 1799, when he was succeeded by Alexander Hamilton. The Society was named for Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus, a 5th century B.C. Roman farmer who, like Washington, triumphantly lead his country's troops in battle, then returned home to plow his fields, refusing any honors. The Society's motto is: "He gave up everything to serve the republic." The Society of the Cincinnati is the oldest military hereditary society in the United States. Membership passes through the eldest son of the eldest surviving son successively of an original member. The Society was also the first military beneficial society. At a time when there were no military pensions, officers who were original members of the Society were required to give one month's pay, the interest of which was used for needy officers and their families. George III. Autograph letter signed.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: 60. George III. Autograph letter signed (“George R.”), 1 page (7.5 x 9.5 in.; 191 x 241 mm.), “Queen’s House”, 6 February 1783 to his eighteen-year-old son, Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence, who succeeded his brother, George IV, as King William IV, known as “The Sailor King” and “Silly Billy.” Prominent vertical fold with light soiling.King George III writes to his son, Prince William Henry, of his progress in the Royal Navy and, after Cornwallis’ defeat at Yorktown, states, I should hope Peace will soon be effectually complete.George III writes in full: I have received the letter you had entrusted to Mr. Majendie, and cannot help expressing the pleasure I have felt on his account of the general improvement of your conduct and that you begin to feel that as you advance in years an improvement and circumspection of behavior is necessary. Mr. Majendie seems to be in good health, and he certainly deserves to be provided for as soon as I can conveniently affect it. I should hope Peace will soon be effectually complete; in which case I shall not hurry recalling you, as I think it highly necessary to compleat your knowledge in the practical part of your profession, and I am anxious you should prove both a Scientific and practical Sailor. I have not time to add more than that I shall ever remain Dear William Your most Affectionate Father George R.Having entered the Royal Navy at his father’s behest in June 1779, William served in the relief of Gibraltar and, from March to April 1782, in New York, where he was nearly captured by one of Washington’s agents. It was during this period that he first met Horatio Nelson, who would later write of the youthful midshipman, “He will be a disciplinarian and a strong one…With the best temper and a great good sense, he cannot fail of being pleasing to everyone”. While Lord Cornwallis’ surrender to Washington at Yorktown on 19 October 1781 marked the end of the Revolution, it was not until 3 September 1783 that the above-mentioned peace was finally concluded in Paris. $4,000 - $6,000

[Washington, George] Lord Fairfax - Land Grant From A Survey Made By Washington

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $4,500

Description: [Washington, George] Lord Fairfax - Land Grant From A Survey Made By Washington. Manuscript document signed ("Fairfax"), 1 page, vellum, 11 1/2 x 13 in., County of Fairfax, Va., May 4, 1754. Granting land to an early Shenandoah Valley settler. The document actually mentions George Washington as the surveyor: " The right Honorable Thomas, Lord Fairfax - Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia....Know ye that for good causes, and in consideration of the Composition to me paid and for the annual rent hereafter reserved I have given, granted and confirmed...unto Hugh Hughes of Frederick County a certain tract...in the County of Great Cacapechon and bounded as followeth by a Survey thereof made by Mr. George Washington...Containing 480 acres together with all rights, members and apapurtenances thereunto belonging, Royal Mines excepted. And a full third part of all lead, copper, tin coal...and ore that shall be found there. The fee of one shilling sterling money for every 50 acres of land hereby granted ....Given at my office in the County of Fairfax with my said Proprietary under my Hand and Seal...." Document is worn and yellowed; small holes in vellum and heavy fold wear affect a few words of text. Fairfax' seal is intact at upper left.In 1748, Lord Fairfax had hired sixteen-year-old George Washington to survey the Northern Neck of Virginia. Fairfax became Washington's mentor and friend, as well as his employer, and he played an important role in Washington's rise to political and social prominence. The friendship and affection between the two men did not suffer during the Revolution, even though Fairfax was a Loyalist. Washington kept an eye on his old friend and was probably the reason Fairfax' lands were not expropriated. Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500
