Lot 260: [AMERICAN REVOLUTION] LEE, RICHARD HENRY June 1776 autograph letter signed to Ephraim Blaine. Philadelphia: 3 June 1776. O...

by Doyle New York

April 15, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: [AMERICAN REVOLUTION] LEE, RICHARD HENRY June 1776 autograph letter signed to Ephraim Blaine. Philadelphia: 3 June 1776. One page autograph letter signed "Richard Henry Lee" with postscript initialed "R.H. Lee." 12 5 /8 x 7 3/4 inches (32.5 x 20 cm). Usual folds, small loss of text where roughly opened, remnant of wax seal, small splits and losses along folds, a bold and dark signature. An important letter from the outspoken Virginia delegate to the Continental Congress, Richard Henry Lee, penned from Philadelphia just days before his June 7th motion to declare independence from Britain. Here, Lee admits he has been "much hurried at present with the Congress business" and informs Blaine that the Treasury has issued him payment and directs him to issue further orders directly to the President of the Congress. Lee continues by expressing assurance that Blaine will collect the amount of blankets he was commissioned to procure and that an expedition to Detroit has been suspended. In June 1776, Ephraim Blaine held the rank of Major and was Commissary for the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment. He would become Commissary-General for the Middle Department of the Continental Army and, in 1777, was also made Colonel of the Cumberland County Militia. This letter is highly evocative of the charged moments in advance of July 4th 1776 and the scrambled preparations for full-blown war against Great Britain. C

Lot 264: WASHINGTON, GEORGE Autograph letter signed to Major General Nathanael Greene regarding his horse. Headquarters [Middlebrook:...

by Doyle New York

April 15, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: WASHINGTON, GEORGE Autograph letter signed to Major General Nathanael Greene regarding his horse. Headquarters [Middlebrook:] 31 March 1779. 1 1/2 page autograph letter signed "Go: Washington" on recto and verso of one sheet, with integral blank with address panel in Washington's hand and docketing in another, the sheet watermarked J Whatman. 9 x 7 inches (23.5 x 18.5 cm). Edges browned, losses where roughly opened, a few punctures along folds, offsetting from wax seals, spotting. After the Battle of Monmouth, Washington encamped his army at Middlebrook, New Jersey for the winter of 1778/79. In the present letter, Washington reports that at the camp Colonel (John) Cox had admired Washington's horse ("my white faced black, on acct. of his strength & abilities") and that he would be willing to exchange him for another, a horse more agreeable to him in color, that he had seen on the property of Mr. (John) Hart, the owner of a large mill near Trenton on whose land the Continental Army had encamped in advance of the Battle of Monmouth. The horse in question is likely Nelson, Washington's favorite of two known horses to have carried him throughout the Revolution. Nelson had been gifted by Brigadier General Thomas Nelson, Jr. in the summer of 1778 and was ridden often by Washington including the day the British surrendered at Yorktown. Nelson, said to be chestnut in color with a white face, long remained with Washington and died at Mount Vernon in 1790. Correspondence dated 1779 between Washington and Greene, a capable Quartermaster-General and important Major General, is rare at auction with APBC reporting only one letter sold in the past 30 years. Not in Fitzpatrick. C

Beatles Signed Please Please Me LP Obtained by a Britis

Lot 89322: Beatles Signed Please Please Me LP Obtained by a Britis

by Heritage Auctions

April 19, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $16,000 - $24,000

Description: Beatles Signed Please Please Me LP Obtained by a British Newspaper Reporter on October 31, 1964 (Parlophone PMC 1202, 1963). A signed copy of the Beatles groundbreaking first UK album is near the top of most collectors' want lists. All four of the lads from Liverpool have neatly penned their autographs on the back cover. Paul (very minor smudge), George, and John have neatly signed in ink around the Tony Barrow-written liner notes with excellent contrast and Ringo has signed over the printed area with great legibility. It was standard practice in Britain at this time for albums to be signed on the back because the fronts were coated with a slick paper that ink didn't adhere to well. No record included and the cover is VG-5 with some creases and light soiling not affecting the signatures. The flaws could either be matted out or mitigated by a good paper restorer. The story about how these autographs were obtained is an interesting one. A twenty-two year old reporter for the East Anglian Daily Times, a local newspaper based in Ipswich, went as part of a crew to interview the Beatles on the Saturday morning before their afternoon and evening concerts at the Gaumont Theater. In a fascinating article written to accompany this album, the story is told of how he and most Brits were amazed at the Beatles' success in America. Before them, no British act had made it big in America and the British charts were full of American pop and Motown singers. He was not a big fan of the Beatles music ("...compared to the polished American performers, the Beatles sounded, frankly, amateurish...") at the time but did go into a record store and purchase two of their albums in order to obtain their autographs. He was successful in that endeavor; he kept this Please Please Me and sent the other album to an American cousin. He did attend the concert (a sell-out) but "didn't get it" as to why the girls screamed and why everyone loved them so much. He closes this article by admitting: "-But, hand it to them, they changed the world in many ways.-" It's hard to argue with that! His letter is included with the album cover. COA from Heritage Auctions.
