Clinton, William Jefferson and George H. W. Bush

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $300

Description: Clinton, William Jefferson and George H. W. Bush. Restaurant guest check signed on the verso by the 41st and 42nd Presidents, no place, no date. The Clinton and Bush families became close when former Presidents Clinton and Bush worked together on a number of important issues and charitable initiatives. They were jointly awarded the 2006 Philadelphia Liberty Medal for their work on the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund and Bush-Clinton Tsunami Fund. This restaurant check was doubtlessly presented to the two Presidents to sign as they ate in a coffee shop. In 2010, Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush created the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake. In an appearance together, Clinton commented that they used to get approached in coffee shops for autographs, but everyone wants a "selfie" today. Estimated Value $200 - 300

Arnold, Benedict

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: Arnold, Benedict. (1741-1801) American Revolutionary War General and hero of the battle of Saratoga. In July 1780, after he was given command of West Point by General Washington, Arnold made plans to surrender West Point to the British for the price of 20,000 pounds. The plot was exposed when Arnold's liaison with the British, Major John Andre, was captured with a pass from Arnold and the plans in his boot. Arnold narrowly escaped and Major Andre was hanged. Arnold was commissioned a brigadier general in the British army and led raids in Virginia and Connecticut. After Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, Arnold received permission from Sir Henry Clinton to go to England, and Arnold and his family left on December 8, 1781. Revolutionary War-date autograph letter signed ("B Arnold"), 1 1/2 pages, 9 x 7 1/4 in., Penzance, January 16, 1782. To an unknown correspondent [possibly Lord Germain] regarding the delivery of dispatches from Sir Henry Clinton. Integral leaf with docket is separated from the letter, which is boldly penned and signed.Arnold writes: "On the 15th Ulto. a Fleet of one hundred & twenty odd Merchantmen, under Convoy of the Robust & James sailed from New York for Portsmouth, a few days after the Fleet sailed most of the convoy parted in a gale of wind, on the 25th the Robust sprung a Leake & bore away for the West Indies, on the 27th. Lord Cornwallis& a number of Officers who came Passengers in the Robust left her, when Capt. Corby requested me to take charge of Sir Henry Clintons Dispatches for your Lordship, which Capt. Ramsey will have the honor to deliver, to whom I beg leave to refer Your Lordship for particulars." Clinton, with whom Arnold had plotted treason, had resigned as commander of the British forces in North America in May 1781.Arnold concludes: "Mrs. Arnold being with me & both her & myself much fatigued prevents my doing myself the honor of Delivering these Dispatches for myself." Although Arnold argued for the continuance of the war, the party of North and Germain lost power, and those who followed wanted to end the long and costly war. Arnold lived in England for the rest of his life except for the years 1787-1791, when he lived in St. John, New Brunswick. He died persona non grata by both the Americans and the British. Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000 Sotheby's New York, Nov. 1, 1993, lot 14.

Washington, George

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: Washington, George. Letter signed ("Go: Washington") as Commander of the Continental Army, 2 pages,12 1/4 x 7 1/2 in., Head Q[uarte]rs Middlebrook, New Jersey, May 9, 1779. To General James Clinton with the body of the letter in the hand of Robert Hanson Harrison. Integral blank docketed on verso, marginal dampstaining and marginal browning, splits at horizontal folds. "The Rifle Company is to march with the Troops. I did not mention it particularly as I considered it attached to Col. Butler's Regiment, and that the order for their march would comprehend it. With respect to Artillery: the propriety of taking any or how much with you will depend and must be decided by yourself on a consideration of circumstances. If you form a junction with General Sullivan at Tioga-He will have as much with him as he shall judge necessary-which may supersede the necessity of your carrying any; if it should be finally determined that you are to operate up the Mohawk river. you will consider the practicability or rather facility and the ease of carrying them and the smaller the number and the Lighter the pieces the better. The enterprise commanded by Col. Van Scaich merits my approbation and thanks - and does great honor to him - and all the Officers and Men engaged in it. The issue is very interesting. I have written him a line upon the occasion. With respect to the prisoners, I have requested General Schuyler to have such measures pursued for their effectual security, as he may deem necessary. Their capture may prove an important event and produce very salutary consequences, if they are securely kept. Congress have been made acquainted with the whole of the Enterprize and its success...."Washington instructs Brigadier General Clinton regarding the number of troops and artillery to take to the New York border for a rendezvous with General Sullivan. With western New York and Pennsylvania settlements becoming more vulnerable to the enemy, George Washington authorized a dual expedition against the offending Iroquois tribes. Major General John Sullivan led a force of 2,500 troops, and Clinton, 1,500. Clinton was to move along the Mohawk Valley and then southward to link up with Sullivan at the Pennsylvania-New York border. Washington worried about Clinton's actions, writing him on June 27: " I find by the great quantity of stores and provisions you are transporting to the lake, that there has been a misapprehension with respect to that matter which I fear may be attended with bad consequences. The large Magazines directed to be formed at Fort Schuyler were principally with reference to an operation up the Mohock; it was my intention if you should proceed by Otsego that you should move with the greatest secrecy and dispatch unincumbered with more stores or provision than were necessary for your subsistence and security .... If you have not finished your transportation by the time this reaches you, I would wish it to stop." But "on 2 July Clinton reached the south end of Lake Otsego, having destroyed three Indian villages along the way. Here he built a dam, and eventually had his men break it, allowing his troops to float down the east branch of the Susquehanna. The Clinton and Sullivan forces joined at Tioga on 22 August. Seven days later the combined army fought the only battle of the campaign--an attack on an Indian town at Newton (near Elmira)....Sullivan and Clinton then led their troops through a sweep of the Indian country, covering the 150 miles to the Genessee River. The expedition destroyed 160,000 bushels of corn and burned forty villages of the Senecas, Cayugas, and Onondagas...." American National Biography Online. Clinton's expedition is described in the Introduction to James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers: "In 1779 an expedition was sent against the hostile Indians, who dwelt about a hundred miles west of Otsego, on the banks of the Cayuga. The whole country was then a wilderness, and it was necessary to transport the baggage of the troops by means of the rivers-a devious but practicable route. One brigade ascended the Mohawk until it reached the point nearest to the sources of the Susquehanna, whence it cut a lane through the forest to the head of the Otsego. The boats and baggage were carried over this "portage," and the troops proceeded to the other extremity of the lake, where they disembarked and encamped. The Susquehanna, a narrow though rapid stream at its source, was much filled with 'flood wood,' or fallen trees; and the troops adopted a novel expedient to facilitate their passage. The Otsego is about nine miles in length, varying in breadth from half a mile to a mile and a half. The water is of great depth, limpid, and supplied from a thousand springs. At its foot the banks are rather less than thirty feet high the remainder of its margin being in mountains, intervals, and points. The outlet, or the Susquehanna, flows through a gorge in the low banks just mentioned, which may have a width of two hundred feet. This gorge was dammed and the waters of the lake collected: the Susquehanna was converted into a rill. When all was ready the troops embarked, the damn was knocked away, the Otsego poured out its torrent, and the boats went merrily down with the current." Ref. Writings, ed. Fitzpatrick, 15:29-30. Matted with a biographical plaque and a color image of George Washington and framed to an overall size of 25 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. Patriotic engravings cover the lower portion of the certificate, and the eagle badge of the Society is at the top.Heman Swift (1733-1814) was from Cornwall, Connecticut and served as Colonel in the Connecticut line during the Revolution. He was made Brigadier General by Washington at the end of the war.The Society of the Cincinnati was founded near Newburgh, New York in 1783 by Continental Army officers who fought in the American Revolution. Within a year, affiliated Societies were founded in all 13 of the original states and France. George Washington was elected the first President in December 1783 and served until his death in 1799, when he was succeeded by Alexander Hamilton. The Society was named for Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus, a 5th century B.C. Roman farmer who, like Washington, triumphantly lead his country's troops in battle, then returned home to plow his fields, refusing any honors. The Society's motto is: "He gave up everything to serve the republic." The Society of the Cincinnati is the oldest military hereditary society in the United States. Membership passes through the eldest son of the eldest surviving son successively of an original member. The Society was also the first military beneficial society. At a time when there were no military pensions, officers who were original members of the Society were required to give one month's pay, the interest of which was used for needy officers and their families. Washington, George

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: Washington, George. (1732-1799) First President of the United States; Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Autograph letter signed ("Go: Washington"), 2 1/4 pages, on laid watermarked paper, 10 x 8 in., Mount Vernon, Nov. 30, 1799. To Lord Fairfax (Bryan Fairfax, Baron Fairfax of Cameron), with separate address panel; second leaf of letter and address leaf are inlaid. Written two weeks before Washington's death (Dec. 14, 1799), and one of the last letters written and signed by him, regarding his holdings of some 275 acres "on Difficult," a portion of which is threatened by an older patent held by one Lewis. Washington writes his proposed remedy to the problem: "My Lord, I thank you for the courses of so much of your land on Difficult, as had any relation to my small tract at the Bridge....The information derived from these sources, has satisfied me that the opinion of the Borderers on my land that it extended to Tankervilles line; and my own opinion (when I found the lines seperated at the Bridge Brranch) that what lay between them was vacant, is erroneous; and it has, of course, arrested all proceedings of mine to obtain it as waste land. The smallness of my tract (275 acs only, by Norris's survey) and the pillage of its timber,-together with the clearing of a part thereof (where useless to me) by Muir rendered the gore which had been deemed mine of some importance to the tract; altho the land is hilly - broken - and the soil & wood then, especially in the article of timber; so far as I could form an opinion by running the course of my Deed. Yet, even under these circumstances, such an addition might have enabled me to have cut down more of the 275 acres. Which, small as it is, I am told is to have part taken away by an older Patent of Lewis's....As you hold the land on the North & East of my tract, and...Mr. Ferd.o Fairfax possesses that wch is on the South and W[est] nothing remains to be done but in the settled and temperate part of the ensuing Spring if health will permit, for Your Lordship Mr. Fairfax & myself to repair to the scene - agree upon--and mark our lines of seperation to prevent encroachment on either side in future. Mrs. Washington unites in best wishes for your restored health--and in respect to your Lady and family...."Alas, Washington did not last until spring. Ever the farmer at heart, he was supervising farming activities on December 12, 1799 when the weather changed and he was caught in light snow which changed to rain. He neglected to change out of his damp clothing for dinner and became ill the next day. On December 14, between 10 and 11 PM, he passed away. Ref: Writings, ed. Fitzpatrick 37-447 [from Letterbook copy]. Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000 Sotheby's New York, Nov. 1, 1993, lot 226.

There is sure lots of work to do. It was good to see you again and you sure look good. I can't believe you've lost so much weight. I never did get to see that boy who went to Georgetown who was at the nursing home that day. Maybe I will later though. It's a rainy day today, and it makes me sleepy and not feel like studying. George III. Autograph letter signed.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: 60. George III. Autograph letter signed (“George R.”), 1 page (7.5 x 9.5 in.; 191 x 241 mm.), “Queen’s House”, 6 February 1783 to his eighteen-year-old son, Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence, who succeeded his brother, George IV, as King William IV, known as “The Sailor King” and “Silly Billy.” Prominent vertical fold with light soiling.King George III writes to his son, Prince William Henry, of his progress in the Royal Navy and, after Cornwallis’ defeat at Yorktown, states, I should hope Peace will soon be effectually complete.George III writes in full: I have received the letter you had entrusted to Mr. Majendie, and cannot help expressing the pleasure I have felt on his account of the general improvement of your conduct and that you begin to feel that as you advance in years an improvement and circumspection of behavior is necessary. Mr. Majendie seems to be in good health, and he certainly deserves to be provided for as soon as I can conveniently affect it. I should hope Peace will soon be effectually complete; in which case I shall not hurry recalling you, as I think it highly necessary to compleat your knowledge in the practical part of your profession, and I am anxious you should prove both a Scientific and practical Sailor. I have not time to add more than that I shall ever remain Dear William Your most Affectionate Father George R.Having entered the Royal Navy at his father’s behest in June 1779, William served in the relief of Gibraltar and, from March to April 1782, in New York, where he was nearly captured by one of Washington’s agents. It was during this period that he first met Horatio Nelson, who would later write of the youthful midshipman, “He will be a disciplinarian and a strong one…With the best temper and a great good sense, he cannot fail of being pleasing to everyone”. While Lord Cornwallis’ surrender to Washington at Yorktown on 19 October 1781 marked the end of the Revolution, it was not until 3 September 1783 that the above-mentioned peace was finally concluded in Paris. $4,000 - $6,000

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,000

Description: 62. Gershwin, George. Autograph inscription signed, on the front flyleaf of Art in America in Modern Times edited by Holger Cahill and Alfred H. Barr, Jr., New York, 1934: vertical crease on inscription page; dust-jacket browned with marginal fraying.A charming inscription to Dorothy Heyward boldly signed by George Gershwin. The inscription reads: “To Lovely Dorothy In admiration & with best wishes, George Gershwin Dec. 16, 1934.” Gershwin presented this book as a gift to Heyward at the time they were working on Porgy and Bess together. In addition to several works of her own, Dorothy Heyward co-authored the play Porgy (1927) with her husband DuBose Heyward, adapting it from his novel of the same name. Their work is now best known in its adaptation as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), with music by George Gershwin. Originally conceived by Gershwin as an “American folk opera” Porgy and Bess premiered in New York in the autumn of 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers—a daring choice at the time. $5,000 - $7,000
