GEN. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON REPORTS ON PACIFIC BASES

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 7, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: GEN. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON REPORTS ON PACIFIC BASES ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954) American Army general, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanded all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific. Fine content compilation: "Reports Submitted to the Chief of Staff by Major General Robert C. Richardson, Jr.", approx. 100pp. 4to., May 27 - July 8, 1942, stamped: "SECRET" and addressed to the Asst. Secretary of War J. J. McCloy. Included is a series of 19 retained copies of telegrams between Richardson, Gen. George Marshall and Gen. Douglas MacArthur concerning Richardson's inspection trip to Australia and the possibility of his establishing a command post there; recommendations for Hawaii, Christmas Island, Canton Island, Australia (noting the resentment of Americans being under the command of Australians), New Caledonia, Efate, and Fiji. Of particular interest is Richardson's assessment of the situation in Australia, and especially the lack of sufficient air power and air crews. He sees Australia as having inadequate self-defense forces especially with the Japanese reinforcement of Guadalcanal. Excellent content! From Robertson's estate.

PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF LT. GEN. ROBERY C. RICHARDSON, JR. TOUR OF SAIPAN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS.

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 7, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $750 - $1,000

Description: PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF LT. GEN. ROBERY C. RICHARDSON, JR. TOUR OF SAIPAN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS. Important collection of approx. 200 war-date photographs documenting tours of Saipan and the Marshall Islands taken by Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr. in 1944. Presented in a binder reading: "VISITS TO FORWARD AREAS I", and signed by Richardson on the cover, this report shows Richardson's arrival on Saipan and meeting Gen. George Griner, commander of forces on the island; a visit to an internment camp, a hospital and cemetery, a tour of shattered Garapan; a memorial service for American soldiers killed on the island, and a review of the troops. Richardson then traveled to the Marshall Islands, where he viewed shattered Japanese bunkers and airfields, met with Adm. Chester Nimitz (of whom there are many candid photos) and Gen. Holland M. Smith, visited a cemetery, and so on, with many views of destroyed aircraft, dead Japanese, sunken landing craft, and more. Most of these photos bear no attribution - we believe that they are original and one-of-a-kind, taken by Navy and Army photographers and given to Richardson for use in his report. Very good. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954) was an American Army Lieutenant General, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanded all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific.

A GENERAL'S PACIFIC ISLAND INSPECTION TOUR PHOTOS, 1942

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 7, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: A GENERAL'S PACIFIC ISLAND INSPECTION TOUR PHOTOS, 1942 Lot of approx. 400 original photographs, almost all 8" x 10" b/w, almost all documenting the wartime travels of Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr. on his inspection tour to island bases in the South Pacific, including Australia, Port Moresby, Canton Island, etc. The subject matter is not incredibly interesting: about half of the photos are from Richardson's visit to Australia and most show him visiting men in the field, giving speeches, touring bases, etc., with much duplication. The same may be said of his visit to Port Moresby, where we see transports being unloaded, locals at work, etc. There are some Signal Corps images of death and destruction from Saipan. The balance includes a hodge-podge of photos of Richardson at West Point, in the field, training maneuvers, portrait photos, etc. From the estate of Lt. Gen. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954) American Army general, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanded all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific. Description: JOHN J. PERSHING (1860 - 1948) American general "Black Jack" Pershing commanded troops sent to capture Pancho Villa, and later was Commander in Chief of all American forces in Europe in World War I. Fine association oversized I.S.P., 12" x 18" b/w, an image of the great general standing in uniform outdoors. Inscribed in the white bottom margin: "For Lt. Col. Robert C. Richardson Commandant of Cadets With sincere good wishes John J. Pershing". Ink is a bit spotty in places and a 1" tear (repaired on verso) affects first letter in signature, else very good. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. has a very distinguished military career. In addition to his service at West Point, during World War I, he served as Liaison Officer for G.H.Q. Allied Headquarters and with American Armies, Corps, and Divisions during the combat operations of 1918. Richardson was one of the chief planners of the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, reporting directly to Pershing. He would later be promoted to Lieutenant General, and during World War II acted as Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and headed all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific.

Richardson was one of the chief planners of the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, reporting directly to Pershing. Fine grouping of notes and maps from Richardson's course of study taken at the Ecole Superieure de Guerre in Paris, 1924-26, following his distinguished service during World War I. Present is Richardson's textbook: "Tactique Generale" by Prof. Col. Lemoine, containing within approx. 100 maps and illustrations of battles from the mid-1800s, on, maneuvers, etc., signed by the future general on the front flyleaf. A second notebook bears Richardson's types notes from his classes, about 75pp. 4to. on lined paper. Most impressive are the approx. 40 printed maps, some from his days of service on Pershing's staff, all showing positions and movements of Allied forces during World War I. An instructive, interesting grouping.
