[World War II]. (14) official U.S. Army maps.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: 155. [World War II]. Major General Geoffrey Keyes’ (14) official U.S. Army maps of various sizes, from (13.5 x 16 in. to 13.5 x 35 in. to 343 x 406 mm. to 343 x 889 mm.), in a handmade map portfolio, consisting of two (14 x 18 in.; 356 x 457 mm.) pine boards painted dark olive military green with pasted black oilcloth spine and three attached cotton strings (one missing). A large insignia of the Second Corps, the Roman numeral “II”, is painted in blue and white on the front cover board. Mostly folded, the majority are combination geographical / topographical maps. In some cases, portions of maps were pasted on larger maps. Trimming and reassembly by Keyes to fit his needs has resulted in the partial loss of mapmaker information. Some maps are linen-backed for long-term heavy use. Many of the maps were set into large, heavy clear acetate sleeves with old plastic tape remnants at the margins. Some maps are stamped “CONFIDENTIAL” in red. Map areas include Rome, Milan, Verona, Pisa, Bologna, Florence, Venice, Arezzo, Viterbo, Orvieto, Grosseto La Spezia, Campiglia, Elba, Massa, Castiglione, etc. Also present is Keyes' clear plastic 12 x 8.5 in. “Map Template” divided into 16 one hundred plot mark areas, set to a scale of 1/20,000 yards. Two post-war Army maps are present: one showing the Command Posts of the 1101 Engineer Combat Group in France and Germany, 15 July 1944 to 9 May 1945 (29 x 20.5 in.; 737 x 521 mm.) and the other (28.5 x 11.25 in.; 724 x 286 mm.) chronicles the campaigns of the “Third US Army” from August 1944 to May 1945. Minor flaws as would be expected, including toning in areas on some maps. Included is Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes’ uniform ribbon bar worn by him representing his Army Distinguished Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and a small bar to be worn in the button hole on the lapel. In its original handmade portfolio, a remarkable assemblage of the maps owned by Major General Geoffrey Keyes, Patton’s Deputy Commander, used during the successful Italian campaign as commander of the Second (II) Corps contemporaneous to the D-Day Invasion - with his ribbon bar Distinguished Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters – from the Estate of Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes.Major General Geoffrey Keyes was assigned the command of the II Corps after Anzio in January 1944. He was Deputy Commander to Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. and commanded his newly created Provisional U.S. Army Corps in Sicily. Keyes succeeded Lt. Gen. Omar Bradley as commander of the II Corps – Bradley had succeeded Patton in April 1943. Keyes was promoted to Lieutenant General in April 1945.On 5 June 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt began his address to the nation thusly, “My Friends: Yesterday, on 4 June1944, Rome fell to American and Allied troops. The first of the Axis capitals is now in our hands. One up and two to go!...” $15,000 - $20,000

Extremely Rare Set Of After Action Reports Volumes I & Ii From Lieut. Col. George R. Pfann

by Amoskeag Auction Co

June 6, 2015, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: This is a two-volume set entitled after Action Report Third U.S. Army 1 August 1944-9 May 1945, compiled jointly by the 6/52 engineer Battalion and Company B9 42nd engineer Battalion with photos provided by the Third U.S. Army Signal Corps. This is a two-volume set bound in heavy leather cover with four aluminum screws and fasteners so additional data may be added as necessary. The smooth leather cover is heavily embossed in silver Third U.S. Army (stars) Volume I with a third Army patch at its center. The frontispiece features a letter from R.E. Cummings Col. and Adjutant Gen. s Department declaring the volumes as secret, as hostilities with Japan have not at that point yet terminated and a summary letter from Patton. All the internal pages as well are marked secret and indeed these volumes were kept by the Lt. Col. under lock and key in his office for years even after the war ended. The interior is indeed a complete assessment beginning with operation overlord with reports for action in all sectors, it is rife with photographs and maps. As mentioned in the title page the reports continue day-to-day, month-to-month and show towns captured, charts of comparative losses of both men and mat_riel, reports of action on both the ground and air reports of reinforcements received, railroad supply maps, etc. etc. really a day-to-day, in-depth assessment clearly with many never-before-scene photographs. The rear of the book has additional tactical air command reports summarize month-to-month. Special Annex A features the Third Army outline plan for operation overlord showing possible employments (these initially marked top-secret), seven different scenario maps are presented. The rear most section of the book has a large pocket containing map supplements, actual tactical military maps of France and Germany from Brest in the West to Wein and Graz in the East. One shows a handwritten notation from the Lieut. Col. Our last headquarters, I left here for U.S. July 1945 , the German town of Bad T_lz is circled; 14 maps are included in all. Volume II includes staff section reports from and G-1 s through 5, Adjutant General, Antiaircraft Artillery, Artillery, Chaplain, Chemical Warfare, Engineer Section, Finance, the Headquarters Commandant, the Inspector General, the Judge Advocate, Medical, Ordnance, Provost, Public Relations, or Quartermaster, Signal, Special Services, Tank Destroyer and Air. Again the volume has numerous photographs, fewer maps, many charts; the aircraft report shows axis aircraft recognition as well as allied with photos of jet aircraft as well. The volume is also marked secret throughout. There is an interesting Annex at the center showing worldwide currency. This volume as well has a leather cover with silver embossing and Third Army patch at its center. Both volumes rate very good externally with light scuffing to the corners and edges of the covers and internally excellent. A few of the transparencies over the photographs may have a rip, a tear or a small piece missing but these are very few and most are intact. Overall a very rarely-encountered set of volumes relating to the actions of the men who ostensibly ended the war in Europe in hard-charging, hard-fighting American-style, led by this formidable general, owned by his secretary of staff who was there for the whole ride. (37145-4) [Lt. Colonel George R. Pfann]

With 2 significant maps of North America: "Carte de l'Amerique Septentrionale," January 1820 and "Carte Generale des Etats-Unis de l'Amerique Septentrionale," December 1820 (Wheat 336), with what was to be Oregon named "Columbia." There are 2 additional maps by Bru‚ both dated Paris 1825: "Carte General des Etats-Unis, du Canada et d'une Partie des Pays Adjacent" and "Carte General des Etats-Unis Mexicains et des Provinces-Unies de l'Amerique Centrale" (Wheat 361). At the end of the atlas is the title page from Pierre Lapie's Atlas Universel de Geographie Ancienne et Moderne followed by 2 of Lapie's double-page maps: "Carte de l'Amerique Septentrionale" dated Paris 1830 and "Carte des Etats-Unis d'Amerique" dated Paris 1832 (Wheat, apparently unaware of this 1832 edition, describes the later 1837 edition in Wheat 428), both showing the District of Columbia and Texas and with no mention of Oregon or San Luis Potosi. Phillips Atlases 758 (later 1834 edition). Provenance: 20th-century bookplate on the title-page; purchased Swann Galleries, THE MARK BABINSKI COLLECTION OF MAPS & ATLASES, December 8, 2005 $3,220.
