Arnold, Benedict

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: Arnold, Benedict. (1741-1801) American Revolutionary War General and hero of the battle of Saratoga. In July 1780, after he was given command of West Point by General Washington, Arnold made plans to surrender West Point to the British for the price of 20,000 pounds. The plot was exposed when Arnold's liaison with the British, Major John Andre, was captured with a pass from Arnold and the plans in his boot. Arnold narrowly escaped and Major Andre was hanged. Arnold was commissioned a brigadier general in the British army and led raids in Virginia and Connecticut. After Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, Arnold received permission from Sir Henry Clinton to go to England, and Arnold and his family left on December 8, 1781. Revolutionary War-date autograph letter signed ("B Arnold"), 1 1/2 pages, 9 x 7 1/4 in., Penzance, January 16, 1782. To an unknown correspondent [possibly Lord Germain] regarding the delivery of dispatches from Sir Henry Clinton. Integral leaf with docket is separated from the letter, which is boldly penned and signed.Arnold writes: "On the 15th Ulto. a Fleet of one hundred & twenty odd Merchantmen, under Convoy of the Robust & James sailed from New York for Portsmouth, a few days after the Fleet sailed most of the convoy parted in a gale of wind, on the 25th the Robust sprung a Leake & bore away for the West Indies, on the 27th. Lord Cornwallis& a number of Officers who came Passengers in the Robust left her, when Capt. Corby requested me to take charge of Sir Henry Clintons Dispatches for your Lordship, which Capt. Ramsey will have the honor to deliver, to whom I beg leave to refer Your Lordship for particulars." Clinton, with whom Arnold had plotted treason, had resigned as commander of the British forces in North America in May 1781.Arnold concludes: "Mrs. Arnold being with me & both her & myself much fatigued prevents my doing myself the honor of Delivering these Dispatches for myself." Although Arnold argued for the continuance of the war, the party of North and Germain lost power, and those who followed wanted to end the long and costly war. Arnold lived in England for the rest of his life except for the years 1787-1791, when he lived in St. John, New Brunswick. He died persona non grata by both the Americans and the British. Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000 Sotheby's New York, Nov. 1, 1993, lot 14.

Williams, William

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,750 - $2,250

Description: Williams, William. Williams, William (1731-1811) American merchant and politician; signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut. Autograph document signed ("Wm Williams"), 1 page, 8 x 6 in., Hartford, May 14, 1776. A letter from a Connecticut Signer in the magic year of 1776, less than two months before the signing of the Declaration. "To the Comtte of Pay Table of ye Colony of Connecticut". Williams orders: " Please to draw on the Colony Treasury for the sum of Three hundred pounds in favor of Nathl Shaw Junr of New London, as he is Commissary for part of ye men stationed at N London to Provider of Materials, Foods, for part of the works at N London to be inpayment of those services, & to be accounted for on Settlement of his accounts & charge accordingly. By Order of the Comtee of Safety, Wm Williams Chr."With an autograph endorsement signed by William Ledyard (1738-1781), also dated May 14, 1776. Ledyard was a Lieutenant in the Connecticut Militia and was in command of Fort Griswold when it fell to the British under Benedict Arnold in 1781. After refusing to surrender with his small force against a trained British force four times the size of his, the British finally stormed the fort and took 80 more lives, even though Ledyard offered his sword to the commander, Major Bromfield. In 1776, Williams was elected to the Continental Congress to replace Oliver Wolcott, who, certain that the vote for the Declaration would be affirmative, had returned home for an overdue visit. Williams arrived too late to vote for Independence, but signed the engrossed Declaration. He was appointed a member of the committee to frame the Articles of Confederation and in 1787, he attended the Hartford convention, where Connecticut ratified the Federal Constitution. Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,250 R.M. Smythe & Co., May 11, 2000, lot 17.

Washington, George. Autograph letter signed.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: 144. Washington, George. Revolutionary War-date autograph letter signed (“Go Washington”), 3 pages (7.5 x 9 in.; 191 x 229 mm.), front and back (page 3 on separate leaf), Cambridge, 28 January 1776. Written to Brigadier General John Sullivan, then at Winter Hill, Massachusetts [in close proximity to Boston]. Ten days prior to the date of this letter, Washington had determined that General Sullivan should request thirteen regiments of militia from neighboring New England colonies for a planned attack on Boston. Reinforced at folds; .75 in. paper loss on right margin of third page (missing two words), expertly infilled.Just months before the Declaration of Independence, Washington calls the Minutemen into Continental ServiceAs the Continental military effort begins to take root in January of 1776, Commander-in-Chief George Washington calls the Minutemen into service – the best trained troops available to him – and it was imperative that they be compensated as such.Washington writes in full: Dr. Sir, I quite forgot to enquire last night (when you were showing me the Militia Pay Rolls) at what rates the Officers pay was charged - I am willing to allow them the same pay as the Troops here had, and have - that is, to the first of Jany. agreeable to the old Establishment - (More I cannot) - & for the Month of Jany. according to the present pay. This is putting of them in all respects upon a footing with the Continental Army. You will consider therefore how far this alteration will square with your mode of making up the Pay Rolls, as the manner of charging & extending the Sums shd appear clear upon the face of the acct. I must again desire you to request the Captains to be very correct in making up their Accts. not only because they are to Swear to them, but because I must for my own justification have all the extensions, & additions tryed. Should any of them, therefore prove wrong, they will not only give themselves a good deal of trouble & delay for nothing, but me also; and I must again desire that they may be caution’d against - including men that have inlisted into the Continental Service, as I will take a good deal of pains to prevent, and if not prevented, to detect an Evil, which I am apprehensive will be practiced. If I recollect the Roll you showed me last Night, Men of the same Company, and as I suppose from the same Town, are charged a different number of days, whereas I think the Ingagement is, that they are to be paid from the time of their Marching from the Town - however, as I was ingaged in Reading Letters & News Papers at the time, I might have Mistaken the Matter. As I understand the Muster Rolls of these Companies (from New Hampshire) are lodged with you [and I?] should be glad to receive them with your Acct. of the money expended. If the Mileage is drawn for in the manner proposed by you, the Comd should be apprized of it, as he told me some of the Militia Captns with out distinguishing of which Government, where applying to settle with him. I am Dr. Sr. Yr. Most Obedt. Servt.Go WashingtonP.S. If you are not engaged I should be glad of your Company at Dinner at 2 o’clock. The strength of the army in terms of manpower had become paramount during the month of January, as Washington had received word at mid-month that the Canadian army had been crushed in an assault on Quebec, a hastily planned offensive in which Benedict Arnold was wounded and Richard Montgomery killed. $15,000 - $20,000
