by National Book Auctions

February 7, 2016, 12:00 PM EST

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $250

Description: Title: The Marvellous Adventures of Sir John Maundevile Kt.: Being His Voyage and Travel Which Treateth of the Way to Jerusalem and of the Marvels of Ind with Other Islands and Countries Edited and Profusely Illustrated by Arthur LayardAuthor: Sir John MandevilleEditor: Arthur LayardPublisher: Archibald Constable & Co.City: Westminster, LondonYear: 1895Printing Information: Limited EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xxx/414 pagesWidth: 7.25" Height: 10.25"Book Details: Sir John Mandeville is the supposed author of "The Travels of Sir John Mandeville," a travel memoir which first circulated between 1357 and 1371.By aid of translations into many other languages, the work acquired extraordinary popularity. Despite the extremely unreliable and often fantastical nature of the travels it describes, it was used as a work of reference—Christopher Columbus, for example, was heavily influenced by both this work and Marco Polo's earlier Il Milione (Adams 1988, p. 53). (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)Condition / Notes: This is a scarce limited edition, being copy number 56 of 100. The preface is by John Cameron Grant. This antique volume is bound in light green paper-covered boards, with stamped gilt lettering to the spine and front cover. A pictorial design depicting galleons in a harbor appears stamped in gold on the front cover. The book shows external wear, with cracking along the front spine edge and light soiling to the covers. Minor loss of material is visible at the top/bottom of the spine and at the outside corners of the boards. The binding is sound. The title page is printed in red and black. The pages are clean and bright. This work is illustrated with a frontispiece and 25 full-page wood-engraved plates on Japon, illustrated throughout with red and black vignettes and initials, all by Arthur Layard. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states. Within those parameters, the shipping cost for this lot will be: $6.50

February 13, 2016, 6:00 PM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £3,500

Description: Abraham Lincoln cutting. 3 3/4 inches long and 3/4 inches wide. An exceptionally astute politician deeply involved with power issues in each state, Lincoln reached out to the War Democrats and managed his own re-election campaign in the 1864 presidential election. Anticipating the war's conclusion, Lincoln pushed a moderate view of Reconstruction, seeking to reunite the nation speedily through a policy of generous reconciliation in the face of lingering and bitter divisiveness. On April 14, 1865, five days after the April 9th surrender of Confederate commanding general Robert E. Lee, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer.

Condition Report: Signs of water damage or staining. The signature was cut from an document. The paper is housed in a clear protector and needs to be encapsulated to protect it as it is very fragile.
