USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DICKENS, CHARLES Autographed letter signed ("Charles Dickens"), two pages, Devonshire Terrace, April 1, 1850. In this letter, Dickens (1812-1870) writes to Georgina Ross, a distant relative of his, regarding financial assistance for the author and playwright John Poole. At this time, Poole was elderly and in dire financial straits. Dickens and several friends including Edward Bulwer Lytton and John Forster sought to help Poole and other authors in similar situations. In the present letter, Dickens tells Ross that he had recently contacted Lord John Russell about a small pension for Poole and that he thinks it would be inappropriate to bring the matter up again. Dickens continued to independently reach out to Lord Russell and by December of 1850 Dickens had ensured that Poole would be granted a regular pension from the beginning of 1851 through June of that year. Darkening to page one; horizontally creased in thirds.

May 12, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €350 - €450

Description: GLYN, Sir John. The replication of Master Glyn in the name of all the Commons of England, to the generall answer of Thomas, Earle of Strafford, to the severall charges exhibited against him in Parliament April 13th - no place, 1641. pp. [i], 17. 4to. A very good uncut copy with a variant title in modern half morocco. Wing G 891A. Sir John (Dictionary of National Biography spells his name Glynne) played a major role in the parliamentary impeachment of the earl of Strafford. Here Sir John attacks Stafford for procrastination: Give me leave therefore to informe your Lordships, that he is in no way scanted by time, whatever his flourishing rhetorick may endeavour to insinunate. My Lords, it may as easily as plainly appeare, that there is nothing wanting to him, for he hath severall copies of papers of the Counsell-Table here, and of the Parliament in Ireland, and yet he still pretends, hee is not ready; onely to protract and gaine time. Sweeney 2111 quoting the 1st edition.

by Doyle New York

May 20, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: George II Brass Inlaid Padouk Triple Chair Back Settee In the manner of John Chanon, circa 1730 The shaped top rail above vasiform backsplats and a drop-in seat flanked by shaped arm rests on outscrolled supports, the apron centered by an arched motif, raised on cabriole legs headed by scrolling brackets and ending in pad feet. Height 41 inches (1.04 m), width 65 inches (1.65 m), depth 19 1/2 inches (49.6 cm). The shape of the vasiform backsplats, the center one inlaid with a unicorn's head, combined with the outward scrolling arms and the brass inlay to the present settee have affinities with a padouk wood armchair with a brass inlaid splat back, possibly by John Channon, recorded in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; see C. Gilbert and T. Murdoch, John Channon, Brass-Inlaid Furniture 1730-1760, New Haven 1993, p. 128, fig. 173 and D. Fitz-Gerald, ed. Georgian Furniture, London 1969, no. 38. A pair of George II walnut armchairs attributed to John Channon with similar backrests and outscrolled armrests was sold, Christie's, April 16, 2002, lot 155 ($196,000). C Property of a Virginia Collector
