A Victorian rosewood Tunbridgeware jewellery cabinet, attributed to Henry Hollamby, 10in.

Lot 138: A Victorian rosewood Tunbridgeware jewellery cabinet, attributed to Henry Hollamby, 10in.

by Gorringes

April 29, 2015, 10:00 AM GMT

Lewes, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £300 - £500

Description: A Victorian rosewood Tunbridgeware jewellery cabinet, attributed to Henry Hollamby, the cushion shaped top decorated with a view of Bayham Abbey, the two doors with mosaic floral spray opening to reveal three interior drawers, on plinth base, 10in.

Condition Report: Generally reasonable condition, there is an old minor shrinkage split along the top which runs through the veneers which looks like it has been slightly coloured in at some point, it is quite slight and not overly noticeable, there is also a small area of restoration to the front right hand corner on the tesserae border, the right hand door has a very very slight warp which means you just have to push it in very slightly at the top to ensure that the lid shuts correctly, other minor veneer shinkage cracks along the front as expected, the left door circular escutcheon has a sort of hole in the middle where something might be missing, very minor veneer loss in places, slight loss to the edge of the back plinth again hardly noticeable. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Gorringes Conditions of Sale.

Description: FRANCE, BRONZE SEAL OF THE MOLESME ABBEY, Molesme, 14th-15th century, 45.368g, 32mm. Untouched dark brown and green patina. Choice extremely fine. From a French private collection Molesme Abbey was a well-known Benedictine monastery in Molesme, Burgundy. Founded in 1075 by Saint Robert, the abbey founded, besides Cîteaux, seven or eight other monasteries. Unfortunately, the monastery with its church was destroyed and its possessions confiscated in 1472.
