Description: RARE NEW HAMPSHIRE MIRROR CLOCK - Bracket Clock by Benjamin Morrill of Boscawen, NH. The hinged front has a mirror in the lower part, a (replaced) eglomise spandrel in the upper, the works are signed on the painted iron face. The case is decorated with gold and black split columns, and has corner blocks with brass rosettes. 30" x 14" x 4 1/2". Restored, good running condition. Includes original key. Morrill (1794-1857) is credited with the invention of the 8-day "Wheelbarrow" movement, original to New Hampshire clocks, having the pendulum on the right and the weight on the left. He opened his first shop in 1816, stopped making clocks sometime in the late 1840s.

Retail value; $9,500. Fine condition.Includes display board with a biography of the the New Hampshire native. Robert Rogers (1731-1795) was the leader of 'Rogers Rangers' in the French and Indian Wars, drawing up the '29 Rules of Ranging', derived from Indian tactics, still the basis of light infantry tactics to this day.

Douglas': Painted Wood Diorama in original folk art framed shadowbox, all painted in red, white and blue, 27 1/2" x 38" x 4 3/4"; PLUS N.L. Stebbins Photograph, taken Dec 14, 1903, neg no 14970, mounted, in the original frame, OS: 12 3/4" x 15 3/4", both in good condition. The steel-hulled ocean schooner 'William L. Douglas' was built in 1903 for the shoe titan of that name at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass. She was the first six-masted steel-hulled schooner, launched Aug 25, 1903. Re-named the 'Delaware Sun' in 1912 when purchased by the Sun Oil Co, she could cross the Atlantic under sail in 45 days, she sank off Sabine, Texas in 1918.

Description: MONUMENTAL SHIP DIORAMA - Primitive Model of the Seven-Mast Schooner "Thomas W. Lawson", in carved and painted wood and canvas, made by George Whitehouse. The steel hulled 'Lawson', built in Boston, was the largest schooner and pure-sail ship ever built. She was launched in 1902, used mostly to haul oil from Texas to England (the first real trans-Atlantic tanker), sank Dec 14, 1907 in the Isles of Scilly, killing 16 of the crew of 18. The case for this model is 33" x 67" x 11", has some tears, soiling.

Description: WILLIAM GARL BROWNE, JR. (NY/VA, 1823-1894), Southern Fair, oil on canvas, unsigned. Sign on right reads "Beware of Thieves, Pickpockets & Gamblers". In vintage lemon gold frame. OS: 30 1/2" x 44 1/2", SS: 24" x 38". cleaned, re-lined, three repaired punctures, scattered retouching. Browne had established his reputation by traveling to Mexico in 1847 to paint "Zachary Taylor at Walnut Springs" during the war, an image that helped Taylor get elected. The canvas is now in the National Portrait Gallery. Based in Richmond, Virginia, Browne painted several portraits of Confederate Generals; Stonewall Jackson is the best known. He maintained his New York connections, died and is buried in Buffalo. Gifted from Douglas Tryon, great grandson of the artist, to Juel Lyons of Edgewater NJ; currently from her estate.
