Autograph document signed ("John Adams"), as Minister to the Netherlands, 1 page, 9 x 7 1/2 in., Amsterdam, Nov.28, 1780. Monroe, James

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $10,000

Description: Monroe, James. Letter signed as President, 1 page, 10 x 8 in., Washington, January 19, 1825. Light toning; small archival repairs to folds on verso. A circular letter, written in a clerical hand, titled "The President of the United States to David Holmes, Senator for the State of Mississippi": "Certain matters touching the public good, requiring that the Senate of the United States should be convened on Friday, the fourth day of March next, you are desired to attend at the Senate chamber, in the City of Washington, on that day: then and there to receive, and deliberate on, such communications as shall be made to you." The election of 1824 was one of the closest, most hotly-contested elections in American history, right up there with 1876 and 2000. There were no political conventions to choose nominees at that time, so they were chosen by their regional roots and personal popularity. There were four candidates in the 1824 race: John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts, who served as secretary of state under James Monroe; hero of the Battle of New Orleans Andrew Jackson of Tennessee; Henry Clay of Kentucky, who was speaker of the House of Representatives; and William H. Crawford, secretary of the treasury under James Monroe and known for his foul temper. Andrew Jackson won the popular vote and also received more electoral votes than the other candidates, but because no candidate received a majority of the electoral vote, the election was thrown to the U.S. House of Representatives. Each of the twenty-four states in the Union would get one vote and would choose among the three candidates who had received the most electoral votes: Jackson, Adams, and Crawford. The candidate with the majority of the votes in the House would become President. It was not until February 9, 1825, over three months after Americans had cast their votes, that the House of Representatives determined who the new President would be: John Quincy Adams was elected by a very slim margin, receiving thirteen votes to Jackson's seven and Crawford's four. Henry Clay, who strongly opposed Andrew Jackson, had rallied support for John Quincy Adams and thus acted as the deciding factor in Jackson's loss. When Adams rewarded Clay by appointing him secretary of state, critics claimed that a "corrupt bargain" had been struck and used this against Adams when he came up for reelection (and lost). This letter, signed by President James Monroe on January 19, 1825, was sent to members of the Senate, instructing them to meet on election day, March 4, even though neither he nor anyone else knew yet who the next President would be! David Holmes (1769-1832) who was a staunch Jacksonian, resigned from the Senate six months after Adams' inauguration, and became governor of Mississippi. Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000 Sotheby's New York, Sale 8501, lot 89.

Adams, John

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Adams, John. Partial autograph letter signed ("John Adams"), 1 1/2 pages, 8 x 7 in., [Passy, July 17, 1778]. To [Edme Jacques] Genet, contradicting information which had been published in a French journal: "[In yo]ur forty Eighth Number of Affairs de L'Angleterre et de L'Ameri[que] I find, in Page sixth, marked number I. Resolutions des sauvages contre l'armee Angloise, and in Page 7 marked No. III. Adresse des Principaux Habitans de cette Ville a Robert Rogers, Major General (nomme par le Congres) et Commandant en chef des savages. Both these Papers, you may rely upon it, are Forgeries, and that no such Resolution or Address ever existed. It ought to be contradicted for many Reasons, but especially because if uncontradicted these Papers will be considered by Historians as Proof, that the Americans, first engaged the savages to take an active Part in the War, and will give a Colour to the Argument of the British Administration, that the Indians must be engaged on their side to prevent them from engaging on the other, whereas nothing is further from the Truth. All the Treaties with the Savages made by Congress, or by Commissioners under their Authority, were that they should be neutral. So far from soliciting their Alliance, the Congress, more than once refused the services of Indians. The Honour of employing Indians is wholly British. This Robert Rogers, instead of being addressed by the principal Inhabitants of Philadelphia, was made Prisoner by the Council of safety, the first day of his Landing in that City, and enlarged upon his Parol, in Violation of which he afterwards made his Escape to New York, and had there a Commission given him [by Gener]al Howe....from that Body, he never had anya Single Voice in his favour. Nor had he ever any Conferrence, or Concert with Indians, since this War began, as is asserted in Page 8 Number 4. The whole of this is an Imposition on the World, and you may assert it to be so boldly, for there are Witnesses enough, who can prove it to be so, among whom one, is your humble sert, John Adams."Published in Papers of John Adams, Volume VI. Paper added at top of letter where fire damage affects a few words of text; letter was silked for preservation. Boldly penned and signed. Edme-Jacques Genet (1726-1781) served as the secretary and interpreter for the Count of Provence (the future Louis XVIII), and was the father of Edmond-Charles Genet, better known as Citizen Genet, the first French ambassador to the United States. Robert Rogers (1731-1795), was the American frontiersman who raised and commanded the famous Rogers' Rangers, and who served in the British army during both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. He was instrumental in the capture of American spy, Nathan Hale. Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000

Adams, John. Letter signed, Philadelphia, 5 July 1798.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: 1. Adams, John. Extraordinary letter signed (“John Adams”) as President, 2 pages (8 x 9.8 in.; 203 x 249 mm.), Philadelphia, 5 July 1798, To the Inhabitants of the Town of Canonsborough and its Vicinity in the County of Washington & State of Pennsylvania. Exhibits toning; expertly reinforced and mended above horizontal fold and .5-inch diagonal separation. With America facing war with France following the XYZ Affair, President John Adams hopes to unite the division among its citizens.“I regret with you that any circumstances should have given a foreign Government ground to believe, that when the safety of the Government, Liberty, Independence and Prosperity of the United States are menaced there can be a division of opinion among the people of America… It is not unnatural therefore for them to conclude that a free Republican Government can never stand against their policy and Power – It is our duty in America to convince them of their Error.” Adams writes in full: Gentlemen A respectful address to the President, Senate and House of Representatives, subscribed by a respectful number of your Names, has been presented to me by the Honorable Alexander Addison Esquire. I regret with you that any circumstances should have given a foreign Government ground to believe, that when the safety of the Government, Liberty, Independence and Prosperity of the United States are menaced there can be a division of opinion among the people of America – this is not however surprizing [sic]; that Government experiences divisions among their own people which it has been able to control only with the Guillotine and Cayenne – In Poland, Geneva, Switzerland, Venice, Genoa, in short in every Republic in Europe, they have seen such divisions, as have ended in partition, dissolution or subjugation – It is not unnatural therefore for them to conclude that a free Republican Government can never stand against their policy and Power – It is our duty in America to convince them of their Error. John AdamsAn American diplomatic commission was sent to France in July 1797 to negotiate problems that were threatening to break out into war. The diplomats, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry were approached through informal channels by agents of the French Foreign Minister Talleyrand, who demanded bribes and a loan before formal negotiations could begin. The Adams administration released documents substituting the letters X, Y and Z for the names of French diplomats, hence, the label XYZ Affair. Although such demands were not uncommon in mainland European diplomacy of the time, the Americans were offended by them, and eventually left France without ever engaging in formal negotiations. Gerry, seeking to avoid all-out war, remained for several months after the other two commissioners left. His exchanges with Talleyrand laid groundwork for the eventual end to diplomatic and military hostilities. The failure of the commission caused a political firestorm in the United States when the commission’s dispatches were published. Although a formal declaration of war was scrupulously avoided, all preliminary arrangements for military action were made, including the reactivation of George Washington to head the enlarged provisional army (3 July), and the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts (July 6 and 14). Amid this legislative turmoil, Adams found time to respond to the expressions of local sentiment, which were inundating his office from all areas of the country. The present letter is his response to the “respectful address” from “The Inhabitants of the Town of Canonsborough, State of Pennsylvania.” The French soon adopted a conciliatory posture, fearful of a possible Anglo-American alliance and preoccupied by Napoleon’s dream of a colonial empire. Adams reciprocated by appointing a diplomatic mission which negotiated the Convention of 1800, following Napoleon’s victory at Marengo. Excellent letter exhibiting Adams’ keen diplomatic skills amidst the greatest crisis that would last for the duration of his Presidential term. $8,000 - $12,000
