Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. 17 November 1887 - 24 March 1976), nicknamed Monty and the Spartan General was a British Army officer. He saw action in the First World War, where he was seriously wounded. During the Second World War he commanded the Eighth Army from August 1942 in the Western Desert until the final Allied victory in Tunisia. This command included the Battle of El Alamein, a turning point in the Western Desert Campaign. He subsequently commanded the Eighth Army in Sicily and Italy. He was in command of all Allied ground forces during Operation Overlord from the initial landings until after the Battle of Normandy. He then continued in command of the 21st Army Group for the rest of the campaign in North West Europe. As such he was the principal field commander for the failed airborne attempt to bridge the Rhine at Arnhem and the Allied Rhine crossing. On 4 May 1945 he took the German surrender at Lüneburg Heath in northern Germany. After the war he became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in Germany and then Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Good condition

WORLD-CLASS PTEROSAUR SKELETON

Lot 358: WORLD-CLASS PTEROSAUR SKELETON

by I.M. Chait

July 26, 2014, 1:00 PM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $110,000 - $140,000

Description: WORLD-CLASS PTEROSAUR SKELETON Phosphatodraco mauritanicus Cretaceous, Maastrichtian age Khourigba, Morocco This extraordinary specimen from the world-famous phosphate beds of Morocco is one of exceptionally few complete Pterosaur skeletons to be prepared and articulated entirely free of its matrix anywhere in the world. The nature of their fragile, hollow bones means that they are rare even in their matrix, making this a fossil of exceptional rarity and world-class preparation. Those hollow bones are, however, what enabled the Pterosaur ("winged lizard") to take flight, the first vertebrates to do so, during the late Triassic period just over 200 million years ago. Strictly speaking, being airborne, they were not dinosaurs, although from tracks found in the fossil record it is apparent that they could also walk on all fours when necessary. Two further elements make the distinction plain, however: the Pterosaur was warm-blooded, and although evidence of feathers has not been found, many species even had a coating of special hair, known as pycnofibers, not unlike modern-day bats. They are often referred to incorrectly as "pterodactyls" - this name is confined solely to members of the genus Pterodactylus, but its meaning in Greek is "winged finger", which refers to a characteristic common to all pterosaurs, the greatly elongated fourth "finger" to which the taut membrane of skin and muscle that formed the wing was attached. The present specimen boasts the superb preservation for which this locality is famed, with a lovely rich sandy patina and excellent bone texture, from the long slender finger bones to the robust, keeled breastbone essential to flight. Dramatically presented on a discreet, floor-standing metal armature and posed in full, dramatic flight, it boasts an approximate 132 inch wingspan and stands 69 1/2 inches high overall, a truly fantastic, one-of-a-kind, world-class fossil.
