La dite résolution disait ainsi « Resolutions expressive of the sense of Congress of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major Général Macomb. ». Congressional Medal in honnor of Major General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) presented by the President of the United State by Congress' request produced by the United States mint commemorating his achievements at the Battle of Plattsburgh on 11 September 1814. The obverse represents the bust of Major General Alexander Macomb in military uniform. The reverse represents a view of the Battle of Plattsburgh with troops crossing the Saranac river in the foreground the fortifications and town in flames with the naval battle in the background diam. 6.4 cm 248g American military hero appointed Commander-in-chief of the United States Army was acclaimed "The Hero of Plattsburgh" after the astounding victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh. Born on April 3 1782 son a military great he started his career with the New York Rangers in 1798. Graduating from the Military Academy in 1802 he was promoted successively to Captain Major Lieutenant Colonel Adjudant general Brigadier Major General in 1819 and then General-in-chief of the Army in 1828. The certificates of appointment bear the signatures of Presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Great mind and astute strategist Alexander Macomb was the author of "The Practice of Courts Martial" published in 1840 before his death in 1841.At the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11 1814 General Macomb fought off the British invasion. Using his knowledge of the land and with ingenious manoeuvres the enemy was held off until the victory at Lake Champlain. This battle is one of the most impressive in American history. Only 3 400 troops were deployed against 11 000 of the British allied forces. Being a great strategist the General employed a manoeuvre known as abatis which involves knocking down trees to form a barrier and create a fortification. This was very skilfully executed hence the British numbers diminished rapidly. In recognition for his services the President awarded Major General Macomb with a unique gold medal by the resolution of Congress on November 3 1814 which commemorated this battle. The resolution stated Resolutions expressive of the sense of Congress of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major General Macomb. The medal was officially awarded to him in 1815 by President of the United States James Madison. Along with the medal is a handwritten letter issued by the United States Department of War dated May 26 1815 and signed by War secretary Alexander J. Dallas (1759-1817). This letter informs General Macomb of the resolution of Congress and his being awarded a gold medal by the President of the United States. Major General Alexander Macomb remains an important figure in American history. A town founded in 1830 was also named after him Macomb McDonough County Illinois. Road names and monuments also pay tribute to Major General Macomb as well as his bronze statue in Detroit and funerary monument at the Congress of Washington. Provenance: by direct descent Susan Watts Macomb (1849-1928). The grand-daughter of Major General Macomb Susan Watts Macomb married Frederic Sears I Grand d'Hauteville. The medal has remained in the family to the present day.

by Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo

September 12, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

MONACO, Monaco

Estimated Price: €25,000 - €35,000

Description: SAMUEL DRUMMOND (1765-1844)La bataille d'Aboukir, 1er août 1798Huile sur toile43,8 x 71,2 cm**Provenance**Ernest Ruffer, LondresNewhouse Galleries, New YorkCollection privée, Etats UnisCollection privée, Midi de la FranceThe Battle of the Nile was fought in Aboukir Bay, about 15 miles west of Alexandria, on 1st August 1798. Nelson having spent most of the summer cruising the western Mediterranean looking for Admiral Bruey's Toulon fleet, finally came upon it as it lay at anchor in Aboukir Bay following the disembarkation of the army with wich Napoleon was to conquer Egypt. Brueys had chosen a strong position in a well-protected anchorage although Nelson had the avantage of surprise. More significantly, it was already six o'clock in the evening when Nelson sigthed the French and, with only two hours of daylight remaining.Brueys was confident that any attack would have to be postponed until the next day, by wich time his own fleet would be ready. Nelson, with typical daring, amazed both his captains as well as the French by ordering his ships into the Bay where they engaged the enemy in a spirited action wich lasted most of the night. The decisive moment came just after 10 o'clock when theFrench flagship, the huge 120-gun L'Orient, blew up with a tremendous explosion and, when dawn broke, the French annihilation became apparent with nine of their badly damaged ships captured and another four completely destroyed. It was a glorious victory for Nelson, one of the greatest in British naval history, and the one which brought thim the pinnacle of his career.Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson

September 8, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £200 - £260

Description: South Devon Militia Medal of Merit 1799, obverse: trophy of arms enclosed by a wreath, with the circumscription, To the South Devon Militia in Testimony of Merit 1799’; reverse: arms of Waterford, 31mm, silver, unnamed, ring mount, ref. H.I. p.396, slight edge bruising, very fine, scarce £200-260---The South Devon Militia were stationed in Waterford, Ireland from 1798-1799. It was largely due to their presence that the rising of 1798 was contained so effectively within the city, unlike other areas which suffered greatly in the unrest. As a result of their good service it was resolved unanimously by the Waterford Corporation that the Freedom of the City be presented in a gold box to the Colonel of the regiment, and that certain selected members of the regiment be awarded a specially struck silver medal. It is recorded in Annals of the Militia being The Records of the South Devon Regiment, ‘This is the first instance amongst existing Regiments of a gift of a medal to be worn by men in recognition of military services.’ It is not known exactly how many medals were struck in total, but less than 10 examples are known to have survived today. With copied research.

The image dimensions are 33.5 x 25.5 cm, while the frame measures 57 x 38 cm.Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur BerlinThe first porcelain manufactory at Berlin was founded on the suggestion of Frederick the Great by Wilhelm Caspar Wegely and J. Benckgraff in 1752, yet already 5 years later production was stopped because the king was not satisfied with the porcelain. With the invasion of Meissen by the Prussian army, many modelers and porcelain painters came to Berlin, where in 1761 the merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky founded a new factory. This was finally bought in 1763 by Frederick the Great, who named it ‘Royal Porcelain Factory’ and introduced the cobalt blue scepter mark. During this time, the factory began producing exquisite tableware in a late Rococo style, which was painted with flowers, birds and scenes after Watteau Boucher and Dutch masters in vivid colors. Famous porcelain painters of the manufactory were K. W. Böhme, B. Böhme and K. J. C. Klipfel; master modelers were Friedrich Elias Meyer and his brother Wilhelm Christian. Typical Berlin porcelain patterns on tableware were moldings, scale-ground borders, landscapes, birds and animals, molded basketwork patterns and pierced rims. After Theodor Schmuz-Baudiß took over as artistic director in 1798, the tableware was decorated in underglaze painting with landscapes and cityscapes in delicate colors. In 1871 the factory was moved to its present location at the Tiergarten near the Spree, so that the raw materials and finished products were finally able to be transported by ship. In 1886 the painting of porcelain tiles was added as a new line of production under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips. After the destruction of the factory during WWII, KPM was taken over in 1988 by the state of Berlin and since 2006 has been in the possession of Berlin based private banker Jörg Woltmann.
