C. Roby Civil War Era Eagle Head Bowie Knife with Dual-Etched Blade and Sheath

Lot 1156: C. Roby Civil War Era Eagle Head Bowie Knife with Dual-Etched Blade and Sheath

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $12,000 - $18,000

Description: C. Roby Civil War Era Eagle Head Bowie Knife with Dual-Etched Blade and Sheath Chiefly known as a producer of swords for the Union during the Civil War, Roby was also known to have made bowie knives during the conflict. While not a military-issue weapon, Union soldiers were well known for their habit of supplementing their issued gear with privately purchased weapons, and a stout bowie like the Roby would be welcome in any close-in fight (so long as you were holding it and not the other guy). The overall length is 13 inches, with the blade measuring 8 1/2 inches long, 1 7/16 inches wide at the base of the blade, and a quarter inch thick at the ricasso, with a subtle diamond profile to the cross section and a 2 1/2 inch straight back clip. Both sides of the blade are etched with leafy vine patterns, and the left ricasso is stamped "C. ROBY & CO./CHELMSFORD/MASS.". The hilt is very businesslike in configuration, with a smooth steel oval cross guard, a brass grip collar, ribbed and contoured hardwood grip and a solid brass eagle head pommel. With a brown leather sheath. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Very good. The blade shows a fine bright color overall, with light spotting, a few tiny chips on the edge near the tip, and sharp etching. Similar ageing is present on the guard, with a mustard brown patina on the eagle head and minor dings on the hilt overall. The sheath is fair, showing its age with no furniture and a number of cracks, scuffs and tears. This is a top notch example of one of the scarce private purchase sidearms of the Civil War which could serve as a cornerstone piece of a major American or Civil War edged weapons collection.

Historic Civil War Era Thirty-Four Star American Flag Attributed to the Ironclad U.S.S. Pittsburgh

Lot 303: Historic Civil War Era Thirty-Four Star American Flag Attributed to the Ironclad U.S.S. Pittsburgh

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: Historic Civil War Era Thirty-Four Star American Flag Attributed to the Ironclad U.S.S. Pittsburgh This American flag is approximately 100 inches by 170 inches and has thirty-four stars. The consignor information indicates the flag was previously part of the estate of Captain & Lieutenant Commander William R. Hoel. The included information on Hoel indicates he was a naval officer for the Union Navy during the Civil War and was the commanding officer aboard the U.S.S. Pittsburgh among others during the Civil War. The Pittsburgh was a "city class" vessel and many images including period photographs of the Pittsburgh from the Civil War show the vessel flying a similar flag. During the Civil War USS Pittsburgh participated in many actions including the capture of Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River, capture of Island No. 10 near New Madrid, Missouri, Plum Point Bend, Fort Pillow, the Battle of Memphis; Steele's Bayou Expedition, attack on the batteries at Grand Gulf and the Red River expedition. The vessel was sold at public auction at Mound City, on the 29th of November 1865. According to the Destroyer Historical Foundation: "On 29 October, Hoel then took command of Pittsburg on which he served with distinction in the campaign to take Vicksburg. One of Lieutenant Hoel's exploits during this campaign is of special interest since it foreshadowed the heroism of the World War II destroyer which bore his name. On 29 April 1863, as Acting Rear Admiral Porter's flotilla was bombarding the Confederate Batteries at Grand Gulf, his flagship, USS Benton became unmanageable and was caught under heavy fire in a position where she could neither steer nor reply to the enemy guns. On seeing Porter's predicament, Hoel slipped the Pittsburg in between Benton and the flaming Rebel batteries to protect her by taking the fire himself. In the next 10 minutes his heroism cost the Pittsburg six men killed and eight wounded, but the sacrifice allowed Benton to extricate herself from the deadly trap. The bombardment was so successful that the next day General Grant safely moved his troops across the Mississippi to begin the operations which at long last isolated and captured Vicksburg." Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fair. The flag has some repairs and holes but is in fine shape overall given its age.

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,300 - $1,900

Description: Collector's Lot of Two Civil War Era Percussion Austrian Carbines -A) Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine Collector's Lot of Two Civil War Era Percussion Austrian Carbines -A) Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine These two rifled percussion carbines are very similar and clearly based upon the same pattern; however, they have several minor differences. Gun A has a screw affixed barrel band, no provisions for a ramrod, dual saddle rings on the left side, and an altered higher placement of the nipple and therefore an altered high hammer. Gun B has an iron ramrod with flared tip, the saddle ring absent, a bolster flush with the lock, and a short hammer. Both guns have no visible maker's marks or visible proof marks; several scattered numeric markings; straight wrist stocks with cheek pieces and steel buttplates; and fixed blade front and raised notch rear sights built into the barrel tang. The trigger guards have grip extensions, and the saddle ring stud is part of the extended side plates. Given their style and scattered numeric markings these were likely manufactured in Austria in the mid 19th century. Many found their way to the Civil War! Manufacturer: Unmarked Model: Percussion BBL: 14 1/2 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 72 Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good. The metal surfaces display a mottled brown patina with mild pitting. The stock is also good with some larger chips, cracks along the left side of the forend, and scrapes throughout. The action is fine. B) Percussion Carbine As discussed in A. Manufacturer: Unmarked Model: Percussion BBL: 14 1/2 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 72 Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: 4575 Class: Antique Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some light brown patina/oxidation and patches of mild pitting. The refinished stock has some dings, and light scrapes. The action is excellent.

Lot 264: Civil War Era Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Historical Civil War Iowa Volunteer Promotion Document

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,500

Description: Civil War Era Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Historical Civil War Iowa Volunteer Promotion Document The included document states that William B. Keeler was elevated to the rank of Major in the 35th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on June 5, 1863, and was sworn on August 8th of that year. Keeler began his Union service as a captain in Company A of the 35th and records indicate he was 33 when he enlisted on September 18, 1862. The dates in the historical record corroborate the June 5th, 1863, promotion date and that he was further promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on August 8th, 1863. His regiment saw action in multiple battles include those at Vicksburg, Nashville and Pleasant Hill as well as during the Red River Campaign. Lt. Col. Keeler was given substantial credit for the capture of Henderson Hill while only losing one man just prior to their participation in the Battle of Pleasant Hill in 1864 where the regiment was again victorious but suffered significant losses. Keeler left service as a Brevet Colonel of Volunteers on August 10, 1865 at Davenport, Iowa. The Colt Model 1851 revolver was manufactured in 1861 and is marked with the one-line "New York U.S. America" address on the top barrel flat, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, the naval battle scene on the cylinder and matching serial numbers. It is equipped with a cone front sight, hammer notch rear sight and one-piece varnished walnut grip. The Model 1851 Navy was a popular officer and cavalry sidearm during the Civil War and was carried by influential military leaders on both sides of the war including Robert E. Lee. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1851 Navy BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: walnut Serial Number: 108406 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. Aside from some traces the original blue finish and case colors on the revolver has faded to a mixture of bright metal and gray-brown patina with some patches of pitting and various marks and scratches. The traces of remaining silver plating have taken on a dark patina. The grip is very good with much of the original varnish, some pressure marks and light abrasions along with some lower edge wear. Mechanically needs some attention. The markings remain mostly clear. The document is well worn, ripped, and has some tears but is in good condition given its age. Overall an intriguing pair steeped in Civil War history.

Cased Unique Cartridge Conversion Maynard First Model Rifle with Additional Barrel and Accessories

Lot 1059: Cased Unique Cartridge Conversion Maynard First Model Rifle with Additional Barrel and Accessories

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,500

Description: Cased Unique Cartridge Conversion Maynard First Model Rifle with Additional Barrel and Accessories The Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls manufactured the Maynard percussion rifles and carbines widely used during the Civil War. After the Civil War the company turned its attention to the civilian market and produced a large variety of single shot Maynard rifles chambered for various metallic cartridges. This example was rebuilt using a Civil War era First Model action as it has the door for the primer mechanism on the right side and is fitted with the First Model style peep sight. It also has taps for a sling swivel ring on the lower tang as was standard on First Model carbines. A firing pin has been fitted in place of the percussion nipple. The right side of the frame is marked with the Maynard Arms Company address (obscured). It is fitted with a Second Model style flat buttstock with slightly curved buttplate. The 26 inch part octagon barrel has a modified brass blade front sight and screw adjustable notch rear sight. The 20 inch barrel has globe front sight and no provision for a rear sight. The set comes in a hardwood case with fitted interior with sections for each of the barrels, the stock/action, and the included powder measure, screw driver, and Massachusetts Arms Co. dual cavity .36 caliber bullet mold. Manufacturer: Massachusetts Arms Co Model: Maynard BBL: 20 and 26 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 36 CF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair as refinished and altered in period. There are traces of finish with primarily a mottled brown patina on the barrels. The action retains faded blue finish and a brown patina. There are some scratches and marks throughout along with patches of light oxidation/pitting. The stock is very fine with smooth oiled surfaces and only some minor pressure marks. The action is fine. The case is fine with some mild storage wear on the exterior and various small tears and stains on the interior along with a few cracked divider pieces. The right latch on the lid will not close. The accessories are fine overall. This is a very interesting set overall built on a Civil War era action designed by Edward Maynard who also invented the Maynard priming system used on some pre-Civil War martial rifles.
