Historic Spencer Civil War Model 1860 Saddle Ring Carbine with Kentucky Cavalry Research

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Historic Spencer Civil War Model 1860 Saddle Ring Carbine with Kentucky Cavalry Research The included documentation with this carbine indicates it was issued to Company A 3rd Kentucky Cavalry. Period records indicate that a Benjamin O. Mitchell (reportedly, though not specified as recipient) was a member of Company A and was also a member of Company B of the 48th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry. According to the notes, the serial numbers and issue information were discovered by Jerry Coates. Spencer rifles and carbines were among the most popular arms of the American Civil War. Toward the end of the Civil War the Spencer established itself as the main arm for cavalry use and was widely issued during the Indian War era as well. This example is equipped with blade front and a folding adjustable rear sights. The top of the receiver has the standard three line address and patent date. The stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut with a single barrel band, sling bar mounted on the left stock wrist, steel butt plate with tube magazine, and sling swivel. The right side of the stock has the hand carved initials "M.H." Manufacturer: Spencer Model: 1860 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 52 Spencer Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 54589 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The carbine has an overall brown patina with patches of mild pitting. The re-oiled wood is also very good with some scrapes and dings. The action remains excellent. Some of the markings are faded, but most are legible.

Desirable Civil War Era LeMat Second Model Two Barrel Percussion Confederate Revolver

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $9,500 - $14,000

Description: Desirable Civil War Era LeMat Second Model Two Barrel Percussion Confederate Revolver This is an example of a Second Model LeMat two barrel revolver that was manufactured during the period of the American Civil War. These types of revolvers often found their way to the Confederacy. This distinctive revolver was invented by Dr. Jean LeMat of New Orleans c. 1856 and features a .42 caliber barrel with 9-shot cylinder that revolves on a 5-inch .63 caliber single shot buckshot barrel. A pivoting striker on the hammer is used to select the barrel. A number of these revolvers were used by prominent Confederate officers. Most notably, General J.E.B. Stuart who was carrying a LeMat revolver when he was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern, Virginia, in 1864. The revolver has the spur trigger guard and swivel lanyard ring, and a full octagon barrel and loading lever on the left side which are key features of Second Model LeMat revolvers. The revolver has a knurled hammer spur and two-piece checkered walnut grips. The top of the barrel is marked "Col. Lemat Bte [illegible] Paris". A Liege proofmark is stamped on the right side of the barrel. The serial number is visible on the lower right side of the frame, the right side of the barrel and on the cylinder. Manufacturer: Le Mat Model: 1st BBL: 6 3/4 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 42/63 Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 873 Class: Antique Condition: Fair. The revolver has a dark mottled patina. The loading lever is missing (left side). The grips are also fair with a large section of wood missing from the left panel. Mechanically needs work as cylinder is out of time.

U.S. Inspected American Machine Works Smith Patent Percussion Carbine

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,600 - $2,500

Description: U.S. Inspected American Machine Works Smith Patent Percussion Carbine This Smith carbine was manufactured by American Machine Works in Springfield, Massachusetts, early on during the Civil War. Most of these carbines were purchased by the government and issued to cavalry units. It utilized a special 50 caliber percussion cartridge which sealed the break action leading to higher pressure and thus velocity than the bullets fired from muzzle loading weapons. The carbine has a blue part round, part octagon barrel with dovetail mounted brass front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the casehardened receiver is fitted with a sling bar and ring for a cavalry carbine sling. The stock and forearm are oil finished walnut. The Smith patent markings are stamped on the left side of the receiver under the sling bar. The three line Poultney & Trimble address is stamped near the top, and the three line American Machine Works address is located above the sling bar. The serial number is located on the two hinge components. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with a "JH" cartouche. "LFR" is stamped on the left barrel flat at the breech. Manufacturer: American Machine Works Model: Smith Carbine BBL: 21 5/8 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 672 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains 85% of the original blue finish with some thinning and minor marks. The action retains 60% strong case colors along with a brown patina. The stock and forearm are also very fine with some minor dings and scratches and a gouge on the right side. The markings, including the cartouche, are clear. The action is excellent. This carbine is in very fine condition for a Civil War era carbine especially given that this example was martially inspected and thus likely issued to a cavalryman during the war.

Rare Set of Yellow

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: Rare Set of Yellow "Piped" Civil War Era Cavalry Pommel Holsters and Breast Collar This set of pommel holsters is very similar to the red trimmed non-regulation military pommel holsters pictured on page 17 of Packing Iron, but this set has yellow piping (cavalry) and a black finish. Also see the regulation set on page 15 for comparison. They will hold several of the different revolvers used during the Civil War including Colt Army Models. The breast collar for a cavalryman's horse has a heart shaped leather breast/martingale plate. It coordinates well with the holsters and has a yellow finish on the outer faces, black trim, and black backside. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Very good. Some strap pieces are loose or torn, but the body of the holsters and collar remain complete. Nearly all of the yellow and black finish remains, and the leather shows less cracking and rub wear than might be expected. The brass fittings have an aged patina. Overall, a very rare set in well above average condition. This group would be a great addition to a display of Civil War cavalry items. The writer does not recall our auction company as having ever offered a finer set!
