by Artistic Holdings Company

April 19, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $323 - $430

Description: Howard Terpning - Army Regulations - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - Image Size: 27"w X 21 1/2"h. Limited Edition Of: 1000 - These Are Four Shoshoni Who Volunteered To Be Cavalry Scouts. They Liked Adventure And When Everything Else Was Disappearing In Their Culture, They Opted For This As An Alternative. They Were Very, Very Good At It. The Painting Shows The Transition - An Attempt At Assimilation - From One Culture To The Other. Of Course, It Never Worked. There Were Regiments In The Wyoming/montana Area Who Used Shoshoni Scouts But This Flag Is Of An Undesignated Regiment. The Same Is True Of The Location; A Lot Of Landscape Would Have Detracted From The Purpose Of The Painting So The Background Was Kept Simple To Enable The Viewer To Concentrate On These Four Men.??about The Artist - Howard Terpning Is One Of The Most Lauded Painters Of Western Art. His Awards Are So Numerous And He Is Honored With Them So Often, That To List Them Would Require Changing The Count Every Few Months. To Name Three Would Be To Cite The Highest Prizes Awarded To Western Art: Countless Awards From The Cowboy Artists Of America, The Hubbard Art Award For Excellence, The National Academy Of Western Art?s Prix De West And The Lifetime Achievement Award From The Gene Autry Museum. Why Such Praise? Passion, Compassion, Devotion And Respect For His Subject Matter, Extraordinary Talent In Palette And Brushstroke, An Exceptional Ability To Evoke Emotion Both In His Paintings And From Those Viewing Them ? All This And More Has Made Terpning The "storyteller Of The Native American." Born In Illinois And Educated At The Chicago Academy Of Fine Arts And The American Academy Of Art, He First Gained Attention From Some Powerful Time And Newsweek Covers. Film Fans Praised His Movie Posters For Such Classics As The Sound Of Music, Dr. Zhivago And The Re-issue Of Gone With The Wind. But His Love Of The West And Native American Traditions Saw His Transition To Fine Art. Terpning Is A Long-time Member Of The Cowboy Artists Of America, Which Has Presented Him With Gold And Silver Awards, "best Of Show" Awards, And "best Overall Show By A Single Artist" Awards More Than Two Dozen Times. His Book, The Art Of Howard Terpning Won The Wrangler "outstanding Art Book" Award From The National Cowboy Hall Of Fame.

I See The Same Qualities In Those Who Have Chosen To Serve Today And Feel That They, Too, Are Our Leaders For Tomorrow."??about The Artist - Judy Larson Judy Larson Always Knew She Was Going To Be An Artist. She Was Surrounded By Them As A Child, And Was Particularly Inspired By Her Father, A Professional Illustrator. Judy Received A Bachelor Of Science Degree In Commercial Art From Pacific Union College In Northern California, Then Spent The Next 17 Years As A Commercial Artist, Illustrator And Art Director. In 1988, Influenced By Her Love Of Nature And Animals, Judy Devoted Her Time To Wildlife Art. Her Primary Focus In Each Of Her Paintings Is The Animal, With The Horse As A Recurring Subject. Her Unique Approach To Her Work Is Through The Use Of Scratch Board--a Technique That Can Render Magnificent Detail But One Requiring Infinite Patience. Scratch Board, An Old, But Little Used Medium, Consists Of A Smooth, Thin Surface Of Hardened China Clay Applied To A Board. The Subject Is Then Painted Solidly With Black India Ink To Create A Silhouette. Now The Exacting Work Begins, Engraving The Image Into The Surface Of The Artwork. While Many Artists Use Steel Nibs Or Engraving Tools, Judy Prefers To Work With X-acto Blades, Changing Them Ever Few Minutes To Produce As Fine A Line As Possible. Once The Subject Has Been Totally Scratched, It Is A Finished Black And White Illustration, Ready For The Artist To Add Color. The Methods Of Adding Color Are Diverse. Judy Prefers A Combination Of Airbrush, Gouache Or Acrylics For Finishing, With Frequent Rescratching For Detail. Scratch Board Is A Demanding Medium, One That Judy Has Used Masterfully In Developing Her Unique Approach To Wildlife Art.

"the Scene Shown In My Painting Is About Mid-battle When Clark?s Men Had Attained A Hill To The West Of The Stockade. Their Six-pound Cannon Shelled The Fort And A Group Of Natives Filed Out To Face-off Against Clark?s Men." 13-year-old Tecumseh Was Said To Have Lived In This Village And Is Shown Holding The Dog. George Rogers Clark?s Cousin, Joseph Rogers, Was Killed At This Battle. He Is Depicted As The Caucasian Indian On The Right Side Of The Native Hut. The Engagement Was A Success For Clark?s Brigade, Who Destroyed Six Miles Of Corn, Disabling Winter Raids On Kentucky Because The Natives Needed To Hunt Game For Food.??about The Artist - John Buxton John Was Born And Raised In The Small Town Of Oxford, Nc. From Childhood, He Excelled At Drawing And Painting. After Two Years Of General College In His Home State, He Traveled To Los Angeles To Earn His Bpa Degree In Illustration From The Art Center College Of Design. John Was A Successful Illustrator For 31 Years, Working In Detroit, Cleveland And Finally Pittsburgh Where He Met And Married A Cute Receptionist Named Noralee. During This Period, Buxton Worked For Several Advertising Studios But In 1983, He Formed John Buxton Illustration, Inc. On Of His Clients Was The National Geographic Society (book Division And World Magazine) Where John Developed A Fascination With Their Dedication To Documentation And Research, Insuring That All Artwork Was As Correct As Possible. This Impressed On Him The Realization That Most Of His Adverting Illustration Had Been "throw Away Art" And Perhaps There Was Another Type Of Art That May Be Held In Higher Regard. Thusly, In 1994, Buxton Put Aside The Requests Of Art Directors To Begin Painting Subjects More To His Interests And Hopefully Of More Validity. He Wasn't Quite Sure, However, With So Much To Choose From, Just Which Subject Matter He Was Going To Paint. John Soon Began Exhibiting His New Oil Paintings, Placing Two Works In The Birds In Art Show At The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. These Two Paintings Were Later Reproduced In The Best Of Wildlife Art, Volume 2 By Rachael R. Wolf, Published By Northlight Books. John Also Tried The National Park Service's Annual Competition, Art For The Parks Placing In Their Top 100 And Included In Their Traveling Show. The Society Of Animal Artists Elected Him To Membership And Invited Him To Exhibit In Their National Snows. He Also Exhibited With The American Academy Of Equine Artists Before Settling Into His True Niche-historical Art. Buxton's Historical Images Of The 18th Century Depicting Scenes From The Birth Of Our Nation, Allowing "witness" To Momentous Events Or Experiencing Everyday Life On The Frontier Allows American History To Come To Life. His Compassion And Enthusiasm For Historical Accuracy Has Propelled Him To Great Heights Of Recognition. Numerous Museums And Historical Sites Permanently Display His Extensively Researched Paintings. Several Documentary Files Have Chosen His Art To Enhance Their Programs. A Program, Using John's Paintings To Inspire Students With Our Heritage, Was Developed On Disc To Be Distributed To Schools And Teachers. John's Paintings Have Been Featured Within Scores Of Genre Magazines. Feature Articles Have Appeared In Us Art Magazine, Westsylvania Magazine, America's First Freedom And More Recently, Art Of The West Magazine In Its January/february 2006 Issue Featuring John's Paintings And Insight Into Their Creation. The Artists Magazine's Annual Art Competition Awarded Buxton's Painting, How Many Beaver? First Place In The 2005 Portrait/figure Division From Over 4,000 Entries. It Was Featured On The Cover In December. In The Part, Most Of John's Art Was Painted As Private Commissions. He Endeavors To Produce More Paintings Each Year For Select Shows, Such As The Masters Invitational At The Autry Museum In Burbank, Ca, The Miniature Show At The Gilcrease Museum In Tulsa And The Miniature Show At Settlers West Gallery In Tucson. This Year, John Will Also Exhibit In The Eiteljorg Museum's Quest For The West Show In Indianapolis. He Was Recently Accepted Into Membership Of The Oil Painters Of America. He Lives In Pennsylvania With His Wife Noralee. They Have Two Children, Bryan And Megan And Will Soon Be Blessed With Two New Grandchildren.
