ARTHUR WESLEY DOW [by or attrib] - Oil on canvas mounted on board

Lot 413: ARTHUR WESLEY DOW [by or attrib] - Oil on canvas mounted on board

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $10,000

Description: Arthur Wesley Dow [by or attrib] (American, 1857-1922). "Arched Bridge". Oil on canvas mounted on board. c1900. Generally good condition; paint loss upper right. Provenance: Ex-collection Arthur Warren Johnson (Dow's first biographer and author of "Arthur Wesley Dow, Historian - Artist - Teacher," 1934), from Minnie Dow. Between 1893 and 1900, Dow was experimenting with flattened forms, synthesized colors, and asymmetrical compositions inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, but he also continued to paint less exotic interiors, landscapes, and coastal scenes. The present painting compares most readily with the more conservative works of the 1893-1900 period, and probably falls somewhere around 1900. See Spanierman Gallery's "Arthur Wesley Dow: His Art and His Influence," 1999, #14 in the catalogue ("Hillside Pool"), which in many respects resembles our example. Image size: 10 1/16 x 14 1/16 in. (256 x 357 mm). [24949] |4000| {R100}

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Estimated Price: $1,600 - $2,000

Description: Arthur Wesley Dow (American, 1857-1922). "Shore of the Creek". Color metal relief print. c1905. Bears signature in pencil, lower right. Possibly a proof from the unknown edition, presumed small. Cream laid Japan paper. Wide (full?) margins. Fine impression. Very good condition; subtle toning. One from the series of Ipswich Prints (1901-06), three sets with each packet containing 6 prints, published by Dow. The editions were unsigned, so our example is possibly a proof apart from the regular edition. Overall size: 6 9/16 x 9 1/16 in. (167 x 230 mm). Image size: 4 x 7 1/8 in. (102 x 181 mm).
