Jean de Vivenzio, also known as Giovanni Vivenzio (174? - 1817), was a friend and pen pal ofGiuseppe Piazzi. From a young age he distinguished himself in the fields of literature, science and especially medicine and soon became a lecturer at the University of Naples, as well as a famous scientist and writer. He taught surgery, obstetrics, anatomy and experimental physics. Additionally he was director of the hospital "Ospedale degli dei Reali ospedali Militari Incurabili e delle due Sicilie". In 1780 de Vivenzio was appointed Knight of the Order of Constantine by King Ferdinand, as well as royal and court physician of the kingdom. He successfully lobbied the king to reopen the previously abolished military hospitals, which was realised in 1800. Amongst other things Vivenzio published the "history of electricityand its medical application" in 1784, and a book on the history and theory of earthquakes in 1783. In a letter addressed to the astronomer de Cesaris of Breat and dated October 1787, Cassella wrote that the "Sir Knight Vivenzio ... has had his valuable cabinet supplemented by a finely crafted tellurium and an unusual planetary system, which was carried out carefully by highly skilled British craftsmen. He is expecting a large Dollond telescope, a clock of the famous Arnold, a quadrant .... On the 16th of March, 1813 Federico Zuccari paid the sum of 800 ducats ... for a pendulum clock, four globes of Marchese Vivenzio as a purchase price for the Observatory of S. Gaudioso". After Vivenzio's death, his heirs sold his entire collection of scientific instruments. Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: 127. Roosevelt, Franklin D. Rare autograph letter signed (“F.D.R.”) as President, 2 pages (5.25 x 8.25 in.; 133 x 210 mm.), on White House letterhead, 26 February [1934], to Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins (the first female member of a Presidential cabinet) concerning appointments to the National Labor Relations Board. Expected folds; light uneven toning; mounting remnants on verso. Franklin D. Roosevelt writes to Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins concerning the re-origination of the fledgling National Labor Relations Board as the President prepared to make the board independent of the National Recovery Administration.Roosevelt writes in full: I suggest after talking with Sen. Wagner or others that we ask Clay Williams & Frank Walsh to act as Vice-Chairmen of Nat. Labor B[oar]d— When a Vice Chairman sits on a new case it is my thought he should carry it through to final decision & that Bob & the 2 V.C.’s should consult frequently as to the general policy. Will you talk this over with Bob & then I can make appointments. — Bob also suggests Grant, Draper, Dennison, Walter A Draper as additional members to represent industry  An important letter from a pivotal period early in the history of the National Labor Relations Board (N.L.R.B.) as he sought to give the board independence from the National Recovery Administration following its first tumultuous year of existence. Roosevelt’s suggestion that prominent labor attorney Frank P. Walsh serve as a co-chair with Samuel Clay Williams was dropped. However, Roosevelt did agree Senator Wagner’s suggestions of Ernest Draper of Hill Brothers Company, New York, and Henry Dennison of the Dennison Manufacturing Company, Framingham, Massachusetts to serve as additional vice-chairmen of the N.L.R.B. $10,000 - $15,000

Frankurt, Germany

Estimated Price: €35,000 - €55,000

Description: A gentleman's early lever escapement pocket watch of museum quality with steel escape wheel according to Mudge Case: 18k rose gold, style of Valentine Walker, polished, à goutte, large lateral hinge, signed and numbered movement protection cap. Dial: regulator dial, enamel, eccentric hour chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, signed, outer minute chapter ring with Arabic numerals, blued hart hands. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, signed, chain/fusee with Harrisons maintaining power, round movement pillars, two-arm gilt brass balance with screwed steel ring and patented "double S" balance with compensating nuts screwed onto threaded posts fixed to the free ends of the S-shaped bimetallic strips, freesprung blued helical balance spring, Emery style balance bridgewith floral engravings, chatoned diamond endstone on balance and escape wheel. Josiah Emery (1725-1797) The eminent watch maker Josiah Emery, Charing Cross, London was born in the Swiss canton of Vaud, he moved to London, where he built accurate clocks with cylinder escapements. In 1781, became honorary member of the Clockmakers' Company. He came to fame as the first watchmaker worldwide after Thomas Mudge to pioneer the construction of watches regulated by a free anchor escapement and was the first to series-produce it. L. Berthoud said:"His work was particularly fine in all essentials, without unnecessary show." Josiah Emery?s modified lever escapement On July 22, 1776 Count Brühl, Saxon envoy at the English court, wrote to Thomas Mudge and asked him for a model of the escapement Mudge had used in his "Queen Charlotte watch" - the very first lever pocket watch, which Mudge hadcompleted in 1771 - for Josiah Emery. Mudge refused at first but delivered the model shortly after. In 1782 Emery created the first lever watch for Count Brühl; he had built it according to the mechanism Mudge had provided him with, which was - unlike the "Queen Charlotte watch" - constructed in a straight line set-up; this meant that balance staff, lever staff and escape wheel staff were positioned in a linear alignment. For an early version of his escapement Emery used Mudge?s arrangement with two sapphire cams on the balance staff, operating on two planes with the corresponding prongs of the anchor fork. Emery later modified this construction and arranged everything on a single plane, with a mobile pulley instead of the sapphire cams on the balance staff. One might say that Emery?s design was ultimately responsible for the success of Mudge?s lever escapement. Emery used more stones, but the most significant difference is Emery?s use of a "double S" compensation balance inspired by one of Arnold?s concepts. The significance of Emery?s ideas and his creations is also apparent in the fact that French watchmakers such as Breguet used and adapted his escapement. It seems that even Pouzait?s lever watches are based on Emery?s designs; Emery might have given him the necessary information during a visit in his home country. Sometime in the summer of 1782 Jean Baptiste Gaspard Bochart de Saron (1730-1794), president of the French parlament, became one of the first of Emery?s customers to buy a pocket watch with lever escapement, which he paid 90 guineas for. According to Jonathan Betts in "Josiah Emery, Part 4, The Surviving Lever Watches" it is quite possible that this was the watch no. 908 we have here (Jonathan Betts in ?Josiah Emery, Part 4, The Surviving Lever Watches,Antiquarian Horology, Winter 1996, p. 136). Quite a number of important personalities at the time owned lever pocket watches created by Josiah Emery - such as the English Prince Regent, the Duke of Sussex (who owned three) and Admiral Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar with the watch in his pocket - it is today kept in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. By his own account Josiah Emery sold about 38 lever pocket watches between 1782 and 1793; only 22 of them still exist today. Cond.: Case: very good, later custom made. Dial: very good, hairlines. Movm.: very good, capable of running.

Howard Hughes typed letter signed about his Congressional medal

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $2,800

Description: Written on the Same Day Congress Approved a Gold Medal to Honor Howard Hughes - HUGHES, HOWARD. (1905-1976). American entrepreneur, aviator, and motion-picture producer. TLS. (“Howard Hughes”). ½p. Small 4to. Hollywood, August 17, 1939. To Texas Congressman ALBERT THOMAS (1905-1976) on stationery from his corporate headquarters on 7000 Romaine Street, Hollywood, California. ----- “This is just a note to tell you how deeply I appreciate your part in putting through the bill providing a medal for me. I know these things do not happen without a great deal of perseverance and effort on the part of someone. I feel you were largely responsible and I want you to know that you have my genuine thanks.“ ----- On July 10, 1938, Hughes set out on a round-the-world flight that became a landmark in aviation history. Piloting a Lockheed 14 named the New York World’s Fair 1939, he lifted off from Floyd Bennett Field, New York, stopping in Paris, Moscow, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, and Minneapolis. Hughes landed in New York 91 hours, 14 minutes and 19 seconds later, establishing a new world record. For his achievement, he was greeted with a traditional New York City ticker-tape parade and awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Harmon and Collier Trophies. Continuing his interest in aviation, Hughes spearheaded the development of several failed airplanes, including the Hughes D-2 and its successor, the XF-11. During World War II, he attempted to build several aircraft, with the intention of selling them to the American military. Only one prototype was developed for the D-2, and by the end of its testing phase in 1943, Hughes’s interest had shifted to the XF-11 reconnaissance plane. Following the recommendations of Colonel Elliot Roosevelt (1910-1990), the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) ordered 100 XF-11’s. By 1945, the USAAF had canceled its order after completing only two prototypes. Yet, they still allowed Hughes to test-pilot the plane, which culminated in a near-fatal crash on July 7, 1946. Hughes’s failure to fulfill the government contract led to the famed Kaiser-Hughes hearings before the Senate War Investigating Committee in 1947, during which time he completed work and test flights for the H-4 Hercules, also known as the “Spruce Goose.” Thomas represented Houston, Texas in the House of Representatives from 1937-1966. A protégé of Lyndon B. Johnson, he served as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, subcommittee on defense and was instrumental in bringing the Manned Spacecraft Center, later renamed the Johnson Space Center, to Houston in 1961. He is also known for giving the infamous “wink” to Johnson aboard Air Force One after JFK’s assassination that led to a field day for conspiracy theorists. Following Hughes’s historic flight in 1938, Thomas introduced a bill to award him the Congressional Gold Medal “in recognition of his achievements in advancing the science of aviation.” The measure was approved on August 17, 1939, the date our letter was written, and the medal was awarded to Hughes the following year. In addition to the letter, there are several carbons of letters from Thomas to Hughes, offprints of the legislation pertaining to the gold medal, and the original typed presentation wording on Thomas’s congressional stationery. Folded with two tiny staple holes in the upper left corner; in excellent condition.

Jimmy Carter presidential typed letter signed about welfare reform

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $700

Description: "Your continued interest in welfare reform" - CARTER, JIMMY (JAMES EARL, JR.). (b.1924). Thirty-ninth president of the United States and winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. TLS. ("Jimmy"). 1p. 8vo. Washington, May 23, 1979. On mint green White House stationery to Senator DANIEL PATRICK "PAT" MOYNIHAN (1927-2003). ----- "Thank you for your continued interest in welfare reform and for your helpful counsel. I know you will give these proposals careful consideration. I believe that they provide an opportunity to make important progress in this Congress. I hope to have your active support. I look forward to working with you. Sincerely..." ----- A successful farmer from Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter rose from local politics to serve as Georgia's governor. Carter took advantage of America's post-Watergate cynicism and fashioned himself as a political outsider with moderate positions and old-fashioned morals. Pairing up with Senator Walter Mondale for a presidential race, Carter succeeded in creating a balanced ticket that appealed to a majority of voters, defeating the incumbent, Gerald Ford. Carter served four years during which time he faced a recession, rampant inflation and an energy crisis. His greatest diplomatic victory was bringing Israel and Egypt together to sign the historic Camp David Accords. Moynihan served the Kennedy and Johnson administrations as assistant secretary of labor until 1965. Despite being a Democrat, he was selected by President Richard Nixon to be his counselor on urban affairs, and in 1973, he was appointed U.S. ambassador to India. He represented New York in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 2001. Carter attempted to reform welfare several times after taking office. His first attempt was the 1977 Program for Better Jobs and Income, which faced much opposition and died in the House of Representatives committee review process. At the time, Moynihan was chairman of the Senate's Subcommittee on Public Assistance and a co-sponsor of Carter's legislation. However, "six days after the House of Representatives announced the termination of its efforts to reform welfare [via Carter's Program for Better Jobs and Income], Senators Daniel Moynihan and Alan Cranston (D.-CA) introduced a 'no-frills' welfare bill, 'The State and Local Welfare Reform and Relief Act of 1978... 'Although its own bill was dead, the Carter Administration was forced, once again, to enter the welfare fray - this time as a negative participant. Denouncing the Moynihan-Cranston-Long 'no-frills' plan as a 'substantial roadblock' to welfare reform, the Administration, in turn, prompted a series of angry replies from its former welfare ally, Sen. Moynihan," ("Picking up the Remnants of The Better Jobs and Income Plan: The Limits of Reform from H.R. 9030 to S. 3498," The Federal Role in the Federal System: The Dynamics of Growth, Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations report, July 1980). Competing legislation and poor timing resulted in the failure of the Moynihan/Cranston bill. Carter again pushed his own version of welfare reform in the next session of Congress with The Social Welfare Reform Amendments of 1979 (H.R. 4321 and H.R. 4904). After review by four committees, this legislation passed the House on November 7, 1979. It was then sent to the Senate and referred to the Committee on Finance, on which Moynihan sat, on November 9; it died in committee. Our letter, a reply to a letter or conversation on the topic, seeks to regain Moynihan's support for Carter's efforts, specifically for The Social Welfare Reform Amendments of 1979. Folded once with a stamped docket number in the left margin and a handwritten docket number in red ink and another in green ink in the upper right margin. A date stamp in purple ink on the verso shows through. Folded once and in very good condition.

Louis D. Brandeis rare autograph letter signed to Zionist Henrietta Szold

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,500

Description: BRANDEIS, LOUIS D. (1856-1941). Supreme Court Justice. ALS. ("Louis D. Brandeis"). 1p. 4to. Washington, D.C., July 20, 1930. On Supreme Court letterhead. To American Zionist and founder of the women's organization Hadassah HENRIETTA SZOLD (1860-1945), with several annotations in her hand. ----- "In 'The Seventh Dominion' p. 81, I find: 'Only gradually, as the kvutsah becomes prosperous, does roving cease. Few of its inhabitants will want to leave Daganiah [sic.] or her... now' These colonies, malaria-ridden, were the most watched of all which I visited in 1919. I know how the malaria was banished. I should like to know, with all available accuracy, how prosperous they are now; -- and what, from year to year, since the malaria control became effective, their advance from wretchedness to, or toward, prosperity has been. In this connection, I should like to have, among other things, the statistics, and in these should be included the indebtedness of the colonies to the P. Z. E. [Palestine Zionist Executive] (or other Zionist body) at the close of each year; and the figures showing whether any payment was made on account of the principal indebtedness or the interest during the year. I note on p. 85 of 'The Seventh Dominion' that Daganiah A[lef] was said to be paying interest charges. May I trouble you to send me this information as soon as possible?" ----- Noteworthy for being the first Jew to join the U.S. high court, Brandeis earned a reputation as a liberal-minded attorney. During his long legal career he ruled against monopolies, and in favor of workers' rights and affordable life insurance. Outside the courtroom, he was an ardent supporter of Zionism, inspired by his uncle in about 1910. "Brandeis's desire to help Eastern European Jewry find a safe haven in Palestine [future Israel] was heightened by his contact in 1910 with Russian immigrant garment workers, whom he met while mediating a strike. He saw in these Jews a democratic spirit and idealism he had not expected. In 1913, Brandeis agreed to chair a Zionist meeting in Boston. Not content to be a mere figurehead, by 1915 Brandeis became Zionism's leading public spokesman in America... By 1917, the American Zionist movement increased its membership tenfold to 200,000 members. The American Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs, which Brandeis chaired, raised millions to relieve Jews who were suffering throughout war-torn Europe," ("Louis D. Brandeis and American Zionism," The Jewish Federation of North America, Feldberg). In 1919, Brandeis made his only visit to Israel, accompanied by Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann. It was on this trip that he visited Deganiah Alef, Israel's first kibbutz, which had been established ten years earlier. Deganiah, located in northern Israel on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, was the birthplace of Moshe Dayan, the second child to be born on the kibbutz. Despite an outbreak of malaria in the early days, the settlers soon founded a second kibbutz nearby, called Deganiah Bet, both of which formed the prototype for collective farming in Israel. Szold was the eldest daughter of a Baltimore rabbi and active in community service from an early age. She taught Bible courses for adults, established the country's first school for Russian-Jewish immigrants and, for more than 20 years, worked for the Jewish Publication Society, which published books for the children of Jewish immigrants to teach them about their heritage. In 1909, Szold visited Palestine and several years later, as a result of that experience, founded Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, which established educational and health care institutions in Palestine. It was Brandeis who convinced the leadership of Hadassah to allow Szold to remain in Palestine and continue her work with the social welfare system. In 1933, a German rabbi's wife named Recha Freier founded the Youth Aliyah in order to protect Jewish children from Germany's new anti-Jewish policies by placing them on Israeli farms where they worked and continued their education. In her efforts, she enlisted Szold and together they brought 5,000 children to Palestine before the outbreak of World War II. Our letter is written just a few years prior to that heroic effort and illustrates Szold's level of involvement with the kibbutz movement. Our letter quotes from The Seventh Dominion, a book published by British M.P. and Zionist Josiah Wedgewood in 1928, critiquing the British administration of Palestine and outlining how the country might become the "Seventh Dominion" of the empire after the end of the mandate. His plan was among the most far-reaching proposals up to that point and was given serious consideration among Zionists worldwide. Folded with a small area of tape-reinforced paper loss to the bottom edge. In very fine condition.
