Interesting Letter to Theodor Herzl - Russian Zionists - Odessa, 1898

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

June 3, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: An interesting, handwritten letter, addressed to Theodor Herzl in Vienna, from a group of Russian Zionist activists. Odessa, June 20, 1898. French. The letter deals with the propaganda efforts of the Zionist Movement, and in particular with the plan to found a "National Bank" (a plan which materialized a couple of months after this letter was written, when it was decided in the second Zionist Congress to found the "Otzar Hityashvut HaYehudim" bank."Russia opposes, and you, sir, know it better than us. Censorship creates difficulties as far as Zionist propaganda is concerned… through the press, and mainly the Christian politics of Zion's enemies which we witnessed in the Basel Congress… we ask to organize a meeting of all Zionist leaders in Kishinev to unite and propose verbal propaganda - the only means left for us regarding the national bank…". Further, the writers of the letter mention the "Warsaw Convention" (a conference of Russian Zionists, held before the second Zionist Congress), and the person elected as chairman of the convention, Jacob Bernstein-Kogan, to whom they refer as "crossed the lines and joined our enemy" (see item no. 4). Five Zionist activists are signed on the letter, including Boris Kazmann, chemist, one of the first members of "Hovevei Zion", one of the organizers and participants of the first Zionist Congress, active in the Zionist Organization of America; Nahum Slouschz, author, scholar of eastern languages and Jewish history in eastern countries, secretary of the "Bnei Zion" Zionist Society in Odessa; and Pinchas Friedman, a merchant and Zionist activist, one of the founders of Tel-Aviv. [3] folded leaves (11 written pages), 21 cm. Good condition. Folding marks, minor tears and damages. Deletions and additions in pencil. Ink stamp.

Expected folds; light uneven toning; mounting remnants on verso. Franklin D. Roosevelt writes to Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins concerning the re-origination of the fledgling National Labor Relations Board as the President prepared to make the board independent of the National Recovery Administration.Roosevelt writes in full: I suggest after talking with Sen. Wagner or others that we ask Clay Williams & Frank Walsh to act as Vice-Chairmen of Nat. Labor B[oar]d— When a Vice Chairman sits on a new case it is my thought he should carry it through to final decision & that Bob & the 2 V.C.’s should consult frequently as to the general policy. Will you talk this over with Bob & then I can make appointments. — Bob also suggests Grant, Draper, Dennison, Walter A Draper as additional members to represent industry  An important letter from a pivotal period early in the history of the National Labor Relations Board (N.L.R.B.) as he sought to give the board independence from the National Recovery Administration following its first tumultuous year of existence. Roosevelt’s suggestion that prominent labor attorney Frank P. Walsh serve as a co-chair with Samuel Clay Williams was dropped. 1968 JOHN WOODEN HAND-WRITTEN LETTER SIGNED

by Regency-Superior Auctioneers

June 3, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

St. Louis, MO, USA

Estimated Price: $750 - $1,000

Description: An ALS written by HOF College Basketball player and legendary coach John Wooden. Letter on plain yellow lined paper (Wooden even states at the open: 'Please excuse the informality of my stationery.'), in blue ballpoint, both sides. Letter dated June 27, 1968, scribed between two of his many championship seasons coaching the UCLA Bruins. Letter written to his former teammate Charles 'Stretch' Murphy, with whom he played on several championship teams with the Purdue Boilers in the late 1920s. Content is mostly of an amiable nature, as it is obvious the two go way back; some sadness in the letter as Wooden describes taking his wife Nell for medical tests. Wooden has signed on reverse as 'JW' but his full signature can be found on the accompanying original envelope above the return address. Letter and envelope have obviously been cared for, as there is only mild yellowing at letter's bottom edge. Very fine.
