Benjamin West (1738-1820) - Moses Showing the Brazen Serpent,

Lot 12: Benjamin West (1738-1820) - Moses Showing the Brazen Serpent,

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

July 24, 2014, 10:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £6,000 - £8,000

Description: Benjamin West (1738-1820) - Moses Showing the Brazen Serpent, black chalk on buff paper, squared, mounted on contemporary laid paper support with inscribed pencil numbering, signed and dated B. West 1787 lower right on stone, with further pen and black ink signature and title inscription verso, 54 x 33.5 cm. (21 1/4 x 13 1/4 in) Provenance: Private collection, UK Literature: cf. The Paintings of Benjamin West, Helmut von Erffa and Allen Staley, 1986, no. 268 Engraved: by John Hall (1739-1797), etching and engraving for Thomas Macklin's Bible , 1793 The present drawing of Moses, and the following lot depicting St. John the Baptist , both appear to be studies for two large-scale oil paintings that West painted. The paintings later served as the basis for the engraved illustrations in Thomas Macklin's Bible , published circa 1793. The location of the finished paintings Moses Showing the Brazen Serpent, and St. John the Baptist is currently unknown. Apart from Macklin's engravings, the current two drawings provide the first real insight into how West's now lost paintings may have originally appeared. Von Erffa and Staley suggest in The Paintings of Benjamin West that these two lost paintings may have formed the outer wings of a triptych centred around West's The Resurrection (now held in St. George's Parish Church, Barbados). The fourth painting that West executed and that was illustrated in Macklin's Bible, was Saul and the Witch of Endor (now held in Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut). The composition of the drawings Moses Showing the Brazen Serpent, and St. John the Baptist, differ somewhat to Macklin's illustrations, as one would expect, but the execution and style sit well when compared with the other grand and formidable compositions that West was producing following his contact with the philosopher Edmund Burke in the 1780s (cf. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Head of a Screaming Man, 1792, no. 1967.130.a).

Art Nouveau Figural Mantle Clock 'Time is Money', Paris c 1900

Lot 47: Art Nouveau Figural Mantle Clock 'Time is Money', Paris c 1900

by Auctionata

July 24, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,080 - €2,600

Description: Figurative mantle clock in shpae of a female bust made of cast ironFrance, around 1900 Housing designed by Arthur Waagen (1869-1910) - French SculptorSigned "Waagen." on the left sideClock face signed „Artassona 20. Rue de la Garte PARIS"Enamel clock face emblem with blue, Roman numbers Brass lunette with cambered glass Brass movement with half-hour strike on gong With key winder Dimensions: 65.5 x 41 x 21.5 cm (height x width x depth) Good condition This figurative mantle clock shows a decorative bust of a woman, made of fine and very detailed cast iron. The women's hair is styled with a beautiful tiara that is lined with coins and two noble wings. The earrings are made of matching coins, as well as the robe that is covered over and over with coins. In front of the breast, her robe forms a stylized lion's head. Underneath, there is set the small, round clock with its beautiful enamel clock face and the blue, Roman numbers. The signature „Artassona 20. Rue de la Garte PARIS" is located in the middle of the bronze-coloured clock face. It is covered with a fine brass lunette and a cambered glass door. Inside the bust, there is a brass movement with half-hour strike on gong. The base is cast in one piece and shows the signature "Waagen." on the left side. There is a curved text ribbon at the front side of the base reading Benjamin Franklin's popular slogan "TIME IS MONEY". It may be argued that our figurative mantle clock is a modern reproduction of an allegoric interpretation of this motto. The clock comes with a key winder. The figurative mantle clock is in a good condition with the usual traces of age and use. The surface of the cast iron is slightly corroded, however this does not irritate the good overall impression of the bust. The figurative mantle clock measures 65.5 cm in height, 41 cm in width and 21.5 cm in depth. The clock was flawlessly during a short-time test; without guarantee on long term precision and regularity. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Preening Canvasback Drake

Lot 60: Preening Canvasback Drake

by Copley Fine Art Auctions

July 25, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

Plymouth, MA, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $50,000

Description: Charles Edward Wheeler is recognized as the most famous bird carver from Connecticut. While his predecessors Albert Laing (1811-1886) and Benjamin Holmes (1843-1912) made many gunning decoys of exceptional quality, it was Wheeler who took the art form to the next level, producing everything from sandhill cranes to sailfish. Shang, as everyone called him, was an enigmatic figure: oysterman, politician, boxer, cartoonist, public speaker, conservationist, and world-renowned decoy carver. Author Dixon Merkt on Wheeler's life: "Wheeler's concern with the conservation of nature eventually led him into politics. Over the years he had come to know and admire Teddy Roosevelt, and as a politician he adopted Roosevelt's brand of progressive Republicanism. Himself a skilled ornithologist, former cowboy, and avid sportsman, Roosevelt had made conservation one cornerstone of his political platform. Wheeler followed in his footsteps. During several terms in the Connecticut General Assembly he led the campaign to pass anti-pollution and wildlife conservation legislation. Unlike T.R., Wheeler had no driving ambitions. He went into politics because he wanted to clean up Connecticut's harbors and river. He did much of the hard work and then let other men win the laurels. His ties to Roosevelt and later to Herbert Hoover might have lead him to high government office, if that had been his goal. But Wheeler was satisfied with the life he had built for himself around Stratford. He had many good friends; his work kept him outdoors; and each year he had time for hunting and fishing trips." In 1923 Wheeler arrived on the competition carving scene with a bang. Public concern over the popular and devastating practice of dusking (or hunting after dark) had started to take shape. Led by conservationists including early historian, author, and collector Joel Barber, along with Paul Bigelow and John Boyle, the group started the Anti-Duskers Society. The Anti-Duskers sponsored one of the first decoy shows in North America on August 23rd at the public library in Bellport, Long Island. A carving competition held at the event was aimed at hunters in attendance to further advance the concept of shooting over decoys. The inaugural event attracted amateur and professional carvers from near and far, however, it was Wheeler who took home top amateur honors with his dynamic turned-head mallard drake. Joel Barber gave the winning decoy the highest praise possible lauding that it represented "the highest development yet reached in the American art of decoy carving." As stated by Merkt and Lytle, "Wheeler carted off first prize at Bellport because he had introduced a new style to decoy painting." Canvasback decoys by Wheeler are exceedingly rare. Important examples are held in the Shelburne Museum, the Alan and Elaine Haid Collection, and a private New England Collection with relatively few others known to exist. Of the examples that have surfaced, the majority were made with cork bodies. This sterling example relates closely to Wheeler's prize-winning mallard which now resides in the Shelburne Museum. This canvasback was most likely carved for one of the early Bellport competitions as evidenced by the number nineteen competition sticker affixed to its breast. This grand preener displays all the elements that top Wheeler collectors look for. The head is artfully and accurately cranked around from the right side of the breast culminating with its pronounced crown. The accurately presented bill is heavily incised and shoots across the bird's back, touching down on the left side. The bird's overall proportions and intricate scratch-comb paint are spot on. In the creation of this decoy, Wheeler has produced a lasting tribute to "The King of Ducks" that ranks as one of the finest Connecticut decoys extant.

Condition Report: Original paint with even wear, a few minor dings to head, and scrapes to body. Competition sticker number nineteen is still affixed to breast. Retains its original teardrop shaped weight and most of the original leather.

This piece measures 8 x 10 inches. William Benjamin "Ben" Chapman (December 25, 1908 ? July 7, 1993) was an American outfielder and manager in Major League Baseball who played for several teams. He began his career with the New York Yankees, playing his first seven seasons there. During the period from 1926 to 1943, he had more stolen bases than any other player, leading the American League four times. After twelve seasons, during which he batted .302 and led the AL in assists and double plays twice each, he spent two years in the minor leagues and returned to the majors as a National League pitcher for three seasons, becoming player-manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, his final team. In later years, his playing reputation was eclipsed by the role he played in 1947 as manager of the Phillies, opposing the presence of Jackie Robinson on a major league team on the basis of Robinson's race with unsportsmanlike conduct that proved an embarrassment for his team.

TRILOBITE

Lot 54: TRILOBITE

by I.M. Chait

July 26, 2014, 1:00 PM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,200

Description: TRILOBITE Morocco Fossils of the trilobite have been prized by man for over 25,000 years: the Cro-Magnon settlement in France known as the "Grotte du Trilobite" yielded an example with a hole drilled through it, for use as a decorative adornment, and others have been found in Greek, Roman and Egyptian tombs. They were known to have been sold on the streets of 15th-century Europe, and closer to our own age were sought out by such celebrated collectors as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. This is a good-sized example, excellently preserved, from the deeply-ridged armor of the thorax exoskeleton, to the rugose texture of the head and the finely detailed compound eye, with a rich black patina, 4 1/2 inches long on a dark gray matrix.
