Virginia Woolf autograph letter signed to Sigmund Freud's son Martin

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: Virginia Woolf to Sigmund Freud’s Eldest Son - WOOLF, VIRGINIA. (1882-1941). British novelist and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group, the brilliant social and intellectual circle that flourished from the Edwardian period until after World War II. ALS. (“Virginia Woolf”). 1p. 4to. London, December 10, 1938. On her Tavistock Square stationery. To Dr. MARTIN FREUD (1889-1967), the eldest son of Sigmund Freud. ----- “Dear Dr. Martin Freud, It would give us much pleasure if you would dine with us next Thursday, 15th, at 8. Of course we do not change -- there will be no party. Yours sincerely…” ----- In 1917, Virginia Woolf and her husband, political theorist Leonard Woolf, established a book publishing enterprise in their home, Hogarth House. In addition to printing Woolf’s own works, the Hogarth Press specialized in psychoanalysis, an interest which is evident in To the Lighthouse, A Room of One’s Own, Mrs. Dalloway, and Orlando: A Biography, all notable for the depth of their psychological insight. Sigmund Freud’s relationship with the Hogarth Press began in 1924 when it became the official English publisher of the International Psychoanalytic Library. It was as manager of the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, publisher of Freud’s works in Vienna, that Martin Freud became acquainted with the Woolfs. In March 1938, Germany annexed Austria, publicly burned Freud’s books, dismembered the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, and began to harass Freud’s family. The Freuds immigrated to England in May, with Martin departing several weeks before his father because he had learned of his imminent arrest by the Nazis. After they arrived in London, Leonard and Virginia Woolf were among their callers, and her diary mentions lunching with father and son in July. By December, she was working with Martin on the publication of Freud’s Moses and Monotheism. Though not religious, Freud had a deep knowledge of and interest in biblical stories, which he carefully analyzed in Moses and Monotheism, begun in 1934 and partially published in German in 1937. After his immigration to England, Freud was determined to see the work further disseminated. “In fact, his desire to see the English translation published became his most urgent dying wish,” (Freud’s Literary Culture, Frankland). Freud’s wish was granted when the Hogarth Press published the English translation in 1939, just prior to the author’s death the same year. Woolf wrote of her hectic social schedule and her dinner with Martin Freud in her diary on December 15, 1938: “This is hells Black Calcutta hole week. Monday is Angelica. Tuesday Rose. Wednesday lunch Vita to meet Stark: after dinner to William’s to meet von Schuberts; Freud & E[lizabeth] Williamson to dine tonight. Tomorrow E. Bowen & Robson: Cal[edonian]. Market: Ethel Smyth; Saturday Robsons: Sunday Tom--& Why? But I have invented a very good scheme: putting weight on enjoyment not duty. I think it works,” (The Diary of Virginia Woolf: 1936-1941, ed. Bell and McNeillie). Her diaries also record a visit to the elder Freud a month later and “the strain on us too of being benefactors” to the displaced family, (ibid.). In addition to his work in the field of psychoanalysis, Martin Freud wrote short stories, an autobiography and a novel, Parole d’Honneur, published in 1939 by Gollancz. Folded into quarters. Lightly foxed and age toned. Framed, but not examined out of the frame. An unusual and compelling association.

(MAP) ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. Maris Pacifici. [Antwerp], 1589. First edition, first state. Rare map, the first to focus on the Pacific.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: (MAP) ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM Maris Pacifici... [Antwerp, 1589]. Engraved hand-colored map of the Pacific, taken from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. First edition, first state with "1589" in the cartouche at the lower left, Latin text to verso. This rare map is significant because it is the first to be devoted to the Pacific and to show Japan and New Guinea as geographically closer to Asia than to America. It is also one of the earliest to differentiate North and South America by name and to show California as a peninsula. It depicts the west coast of North America more accurately than any maps before it. Framed in double-sided plexi-glass. Watermarks to left side affecting cartouche and island of New Guinea; some brown spots to upper margin. Size of sheet 17 3/4 x 22 inches.

Condition Report: Soiling to margins; three brownspots to upper margin; dampstaining affecting left side of map and cartouche.
