Surrealist Salvador Dali's biography,

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $3,500

Description: DALI, SALVADOR. (1904-1989). Spanish surrealist painter and printmaker. A copy of Vida Secreta de Salvador Dali inscribed and signed in full (rare) to Manuel Edreida with an illustration of Don Quixote. (“Salvador Dali”). 547pp. 4to. N.p., 1951. (Buenos Aires: Editorial Poseidon, 1944). In Spanish. Signed on the half title page and illustrated on the facing endpaper. ********** Dali’s autobiography, Vida Secreta de Salvador Dali, first published in 1942, was called by his English translator, Haakon Chevalier, “one of the most fantastically indecipherable documents written by a man gifted with a true sense of the value of words, verbal image, and style,” (Salvador Dali Or the Art of Spitting on Your Mother’s Portrait, Rojas). Nonetheless, the heavily illustrated work provides great insight into the mind of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists. ********** Cervantes’ The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha is widely considered the leading masterpiece of Spanish literature and the first modern novel. The eponymous character of this highly influential work has been depicted throughout the centuries since its publication in 1605 and 1615 (volumes 1 and 2) by such artists as Honoré Daumier, Angelo Agostini, Wilhelm Marstrand, Gustave Doré (who illustrated an 1863 edition), and, perhaps, most famously, Pablo Picasso. Our drawing is composed of horizontal lines of varying widths and circles arranged to depict the knight holding a shield and lance. The vertical line of the lance is drawn in conjunction with the first word of the inscription (“Para”). ********** With some very light normal wear. In very good condition.

Che Guevara typed letter signed as president of the National Bank of Cuba re:

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,500

Description: “Our Revolutionary Government has drastically prohibited the commissions that existed for so many years in this country” ********** GUEVARA, ERNESTO CHE. (1928-1967). Argentinian revolutionary who played a major role in the Cuban Revolution that ousted Fulgencio Batista and brought Fidel Castro to power. TLS. (“Che”). 1p. Narrow 4to. Havana, January 20, 1961 (“The Year of Education”). On engraved stationery of the President of the National Bank of Cuba, to “Dear Friend," Gustavo Jimenez Correa in Mexico City. In Spanish with translation. ********** “I have received you letter of the fourteenth of this month, in which you asked for my cooperation in obtaining a commission, and I am sorry to inform you that our Revolutionary Government has drastically prohibited the commissions that existed for so many years in this country. Greetings to your wife and children…”********** On July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro, his brother Raul and other rebels attacked the Moncada military barracks in Santiago de Cuba, touching off the Cuban Revolution. Although the Castro brothers were captured and imprisoned, the Batista regime released them in 1955 when it gave in to international pressure to free political prisoners. The rebels fled to Mexico where, in June 1955, they met Argentine revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara. ********** While in medical school, Guevara had travelled by motorcycle throughout South and Central America and was profoundly affected by the poverty he witnessed. His experiences led him to fight to defeat imperialism throughout the region and apply Marxist theory, through force if necessary. From 1956 to 1959 Guevara, the Castros and their rebels waged a guerrilla war against Batista’s army. Guevara was so integral to the movement that Time magazine labeled him “Castro’s Brain” and Castro appointed him Comandante of his own army column, the title typed beneath the signature on our letter. Guevara’s contributions to the armed struggle included taking Las Villas province in December 1958, effectively cutting the island in half, and then capturing Santa Clara despite being badly outnumbered. On January 1, 1959, Batista fled in the wake of rebel victories. For his military victories Guevara was declared “a Cuban citizen by birth” and appointed commander of the La Cabaña Fortress prison. In that role, he oversaw the tribunal that tried and executed those Batista supporters who had been deemed traitors or war criminals. In his ongoing role in the new Cuban government, Guevara implemented reforms that redistributed land to peasants and communes and nationalized property much of which had been owned by American companies. The legality of this maneuver was challenged in the American courts in Banco Nacional de Cuba v. Sabbatino. The Banco Nacional de Cuba, on whose letterhead Che is writing, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York against an American company that refused to pay for sugar it purchased citing Cuba’s alleged illegal appropriation of the company with whom the buyer had contracted for the purchase of sugar. In October 1963, the matter was heard by the Supreme Court which found in favor of the Banco Nacional de Cuba applying the Act of State doctrine, which held that the appropriation was legal because it was a legislative act of a sovereign country and, therefore, not subject to American law. ********** Our letter is written merely 17 days after the United States severed diplomatic ties with Cuba over the ongoing nationalization of American property; relations between the two countries were only recently restored, on July 20, 2015. ********** In 1967, Guevara was captured and executed in Bolivia where he had gone to organize a group of guerilla fighters. With a legacy that is immense and complex, he is viewed as both a guardian of freedom and a symbol of resistance by some and a cold-blooded executioner by others. ********** Folded and accompanied by the original envelope. In very good condition and rare on this letterhead.
