A pair of figures can be seen near the center of the image, mostly featureless.Signature: Bottom LeftDate of Work: Mid 18th C.Frame: Gilt WoodWork Size: 5.25x10.25"Frame Size: 20.25x25.0"Weight: 6.0lbsProvenance: Putnam County EstateCondition: This etching is in excellent condition, with some smudging of the ink used to create it as well as minor foxing.Artist Biography: Piranesi was born in Mogliano Veneto, near Treviso, then part of the Republic of Venice. His brother Andrea introduced him to Latin and the ancient civilization, and later he studied as an architect under his uncle, Matteo Lucchesi, who was Magistrato delle Acque, a Venetian engineer who specialized in excavation. From 1740 he was in Rome with Marco Foscarini, the Venetian envoy to the Vatican. He resided in the Palazzo Venezia and studied under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to the art of etching and engraving. After his studies with Vasi, he collaborated with pupils of the French Academy in Rome to produce a series of vedute (views) of the city; his first work was Prima parte di Architettura e Prospettive (1743), followed in 1745 by Varie Vedute di Roma Antica e Moderna. The Pyramid of Cestius, etchingFrom 1743 to 1747 he sojourned mainly in Venice where, according to some sources, he often visited Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. He then returned to Rome, where he opened a workshop in Via del Corso. In 1748-1774 he created a long series of vedute of the city which established his fame. In the meantime Piranesi devoted himself to the measurement of many of the ancient edifices: this led to the publication of Le Antichità Romane de' tempo della prima Repubblica e dei primi imperatori ("Roman Antiquities of the Time of the First Republic and the First Emperors"). In 1761 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and opened a printing facility of his own. In 1762 the Campo Marzio dell'antica Roma collection of engravings was printed. The following year he was commissioned by Pope Clement XIII to restore the choir of San Giovanni in Laterano, but the work did not materialize. In 1764 Piranesi started his sole architectural works of importance, the restoration of the church of Santa Maria del Priorato in the Villa of the Knights of Malta in Rome, where he was buried in a tomb designed by Giuseppi Angelini. In 1767 he was created a knight of the Golden Spur, which enabled him henceforth to sign himself "Cav[aliere] Piranesi". In 1769 his publication of a series of ingenious and sometimes bizarre designs for chimneypieces, as well as an original range of furniture pieces, established his place as a versatile and resourceful designer. In 1776 he created his famous Piranesi Vase, his best known work as a 'restorer' of ancient sculpture. In 1777-78 Piranesi published Avanzi degli Edifici di Pesto, (Remains of the Edifices of Paestum) a collection of views of Paestum. He died in Rome in 1778 after a long illness and was buried in the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato, on the Aventine hill in Rome.

1 Magnum Bottle 2009 Antinori Tignanello, Tuscany

Lot 69: 1 Magnum Bottle 2009 Antinori Tignanello, Tuscany

by Auctionata

August 13, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €110 - €130

Description: One magnum bottle of Tignanello Produced by Marchesi Antinori 2009 vintage Toscana IGT, Tuscany/Italy In originaler Holzkiste Original filling quantity: 1.5 l Fill level: into neck Antonio Galloni: 94/100 (2012) Wine Spectator: 92/100 (2012) This lot comprises one original wooden case with one magnum bottle of 2009 vintage Tignanello from the Antinori winery in Tuscany.Tuscan vines grow in the cultural landscape of central Italy, a region not only regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and with that European culture in general. It's no wonder then that the agriculture of winegrowing here has produced genuine wine types and distinct styles. Tuscany is home to some fantastic wines. It is like a wild bull, tamed by the Etruscans many years ago. Its beauty has always attracted and fascinated foreigners. It is a landscape that can be as captivating as Mona Lisa's smile. One cannot fathom it, melt into it and be thrown back out without understanding what once came to blossom here. However, fascination alone does not result in good winegrowing - it is the art of planting vines in the ground and producing exceptionally nuanced wines from their fruits. Tuscany can be divided into two main parts: the historical main area of Florence and Siena and, in its wilder south, the Maremma - historically a poor farming region that has experienced a winegrowing boom over the past two decades. The first wine dynasties of Italy, the Polizianos, Antinoris and Frescobaldis, came to the Maremma towards the end of the 1990s, when land in Chianti Classico became very expensive.Toscana IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is a wine quality closely tied to its origin. It simply describes a wine whose grapes were grown in a Tuscan wine region. Since 2009, this is also labeled IGP. The term can also signify top, highly-prized Tuscan wines, similar to Vini da Tavola, if a producer wants to interpret the wine authorities' guidelines more freely.2009 was a very good vintage in Tuscany, similar to the almost legendary 2004 vintage. This wine still needs a few years of proper storage until it reaches its peak, then you will have a true Super Tuscan! The 2009 vintage Tignanello was rated 94 points in Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate by Antonio Galloni in 2012. The wine was rated 92 points by Wine Spectator in the same year. The fill level is excellent (into neck). The label and capsule are in perfect condition.Antinori The legendary Florence-based Antinori wine company is one of the biggest wine producers in Italy, with a palette ranging from simple, clean Chiantis to absolute top growths. The emergence of the Tignanello in 1971, then sold as Chianti, sparked a new era for Tuscan winegrowing. In the years that followed, the wine was mixed with up to 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, which was forbidden according to the stipulated rules for Chianti. With this, the first "Super-Tuscan" was born, sold under the modest Vino da Tavola label. Tignanello was followed by Solaia in the 1980s, in which the proportion of Sangiovese was reduced to approximately 20% and Cabernet Sauvignon was more present. The result was once again ground-breaking, joining the Sassicaia as one of the first Italian Bordeaux-style wines and achieving worldwide recognition. In Umbria, Antinori also produced some of the best Italian white wines, including the Cervaro della Sala, a blend of Chardonnay and Grechetto. We cannot talk about Antinori without mentioning their fantastic wines from the Tenuta Guado al Tasso estate in the Bolgheri (Tuscan coast). Both the Bordeaux cuvee Guado al Tasso (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc) and the extremely rare Matarocchio, which debuted in 2007 and is made exclusively from Cabernet Franc, should not be missing from any serious wine cellar! Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

1 Magnum Bottle 2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Serre Nuove

Lot 71: 1 Magnum Bottle 2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Serre Nuove

by Auctionata

August 13, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €80 - €100

Description: One magnum bottle of Le Serre Nuove Produced by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia 2007 vintage Bolgheri, Tuscany/Italy In original wooden case Original filling quantity: 1.5 l Fill level: into neck Antonio Galloni (2009): 92/100 James Suckling (2009): 92/100 This lot comprises one original wooden case with one magnum bottle of 2007 vintage Le Serre Nuove produced by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri.Bolgheri is a small town in the Maremma, the southern part of Tuscany, which gained recognition for its role in the revival of Italian premium red wine. Historically, the wine-growing country is hardly steeped in heritage, especially when compared to Chianti, however pioneer vintners triggered a new era of Italian premium winegrowing here at the end of the 1960s. Wines including Tignanello, Sassicaia and Orenellaia were produced by members of Tuscan wine dynasty Antinoir in Bolgheri. These wines were not like traditional Sangiovese regarding taste and structure, but rather characteristic of French types, such as Merlot, Cabernet and, later, Syrah. They were therefore initially only allowed to be marketed as Vini da Tavola. However, these wines were more than just fashionable, they established a new notion of taste and style for Tuscan red wine. Their immense success led to them being recognized as DOC wines during the 1990s. Their style of winegrowing was also innovative - they used barriques, small wooden oak barrels, which was not usual for Tuscany. The best of these Super Tuscans have proved to be of stable value and long-lasting.2007 was an exceptional vintage in Tuscany, first-class wines with high alcohol content and good acidity were made across all regions. This wine from one of the best estates in Italy will already taste wonderful now, but after a few years of proper storage it will be even better! The fill level is excellent (into neck). The label, capsule and original wooden case are in perfect condition.Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast in 1981 by Ludovico Antinori, a member of the famous wine dynasty hailing from the city of Florence. From the onset, the aim was to produce fine wines in the Sassicaia style of neighboring Tenuta San Guido. Wines, which on the one hand consist of French grape types Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, simultaneously express the special terroir of the region, therefore making them typical Italian wines rather than simply Bordeaux copies. The first wine to be produced in this manner was Ornellaia in 1985. By the mid-90s it had reached cult status in Italy and the whole world. A year later, 'the' Italian Merlot arrived on the scene. Despite competition from the Messorio or the wines of Miani, the Masseto counts for many as the very best in Italy when it comes to this particular grape. However, everyone must determine for themselves whether they find this to be true. In any case, this is in a league with the most prominent Pomerol wines, including Petrus.Serre Nuove is produced alongside these wine monuments as an almost equal 'second wine' of the Ornellaia, along with the Le Volte as an introductory wine. In 2002, Ornellaia was divided between Robert Mondavi and Frescobaldi, the other famous wine estate from Florence. The Frescobaldie are the exclusive owners. The wine has not suffered a subsequent drop in quality as a result. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Description: One magnum bottle of Ornellaia Produced by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia 1999 vintage Bolgheri, Tuscany/Italy In wooden Ornellaia case (from 1998) Fill level: into neck Antonio Galloni (2010): 95/100 James Suckling (2002): 94/100 Bolgheri is a small town in the Maremma, the southern part of Tuscany, which gained recognition for its role in the revival of Italian premium red wine. The best of these Super Tuscans have proved to be of stable value and long-lasting.1999 was an excellent vintage in Tuscany, even better than 1997, producing artful, racy wines. The 1999 vintage Ornellaia was rated 95 points by Antonio Galloni for Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate in 2010. James Suckling rated the wine 94 points for Wine Spectator in 2002.The fill level is excellent (into neck). Estimated Price: €160 - €190

Description: One magnum bottle of l'Apparita Produced by Castello di Ama 2003 vintage Toscana IGT, Tuscany/Italy In original wooden case Original filling quantity: 1.5 l Fill level: into neck Antonio Galloni (2007): 93/100 This lot comprises one magnum bottle of 2003 vintage l'Apparita produced by Castello di Ama in Tuscany.Tuscan vines grow in the cultural landscape of central Italy, a region not only regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and with that European culture in general. The term can also signify top, highly-prized Tuscan wines, similar to Vini da Tavola, if a producer wants to interpret the wine authorities' guidelines more freely. The 2003 vintage l'Apparita was rated 92 points by Antonio Galloni for Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate in 2007.The fill level is excellent (into neck). The label, capsule and original wooden case are in perfect condition.Castello di Ama We can thank Lorenzo and Marco Pallanti not only for producing some of the best Chianti Classico, which they grow in the vicinity of Gaiole in Chianti, but also for their L `Apparita, which is one of the best pure merlot wines in Italy, and can easily compete with any Pomerol wines. The vineyards Bellavista (80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera) and La Casuccia, which grows a small proportion of Merlot alongside Sangiovese, produce elegant cru wines, which mature beautifully over 20-30 years but will also delight the palate at a young age.The Italian wine bible 'Gambero Rosso' awarded Marco Pallanti the title of 'Oenologist of the year' in 2003. The 2005 edition of Gambero Rosso honored the Castello di Ama with the highest accolade 'Cantina dell' Anno', meaning 'wine cellar of the year'. Lot 75: 6 Bottles 1997 Castello di Ama Vigneto La Casuccia, Tuscany

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €560 - €700

Description: Six bottles of Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia Produced by Castello di Ama 1997 vintage Chianti Classico, Tuscany/Italy In original wooden case Original filling quantity: 0.75 l Fill level: 5x into neck, 1x top shoulder This lot comprises one original wooden case with six bottles of 1997 vintage Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia produced by Castello di Ama in Tuscany. The Tuscan winegrowing region of Chianti, home to Chianti red wine, is a heterogenic wine-growing area with truly diverse geological and geographical landscapes and wine styles. Chianti therefore reveals many different faces and wine qualities. Chiantis are cuvées made using various grape varieties, mainly Sangiovese. The Chianti region is divided into seven DOCG sub-regions, with some of the finest, most long-lasting growths come from Chianti Classico and Rufina:Chianti Classico DOCG is produced in the historic part of Tuscany, between Florenz and Siena. It must be matured in oak barrels for at least a year, Chianti Classico Reserva for two. The grape variety proportions in cuvee are also set by wine authorities: Sangiovese makes up at least eighty percent of the wine. White wine grapes, formerly commonplace, are no longer allowed. In 1997 the summer in Tuscany was extremely hot, the quality is rather inconsistent but some wines are quite extraordinary. The fill levels are mostly excellent (into neck), one bottle however has a lower fill level (top shoulder). The labels, capsules and original wooden case are in perfect condition.Castello di Ama We can thank Lorenzo and Marco Pallanti not only for producing some of the best Chianti Classico, which they grow in the vicinity of Gaiole in Chianti, but also for their L `Apparita, which is one of the best pure merlot wines in Italy, and can easily compete with any Pomerol wines. FioccoGilded stucco frameOverall dimensions, with frame: 55 x 46 cmProvenance: From a Swiss private collectionPietro Longhi's representations of Venetian society are a significant source for the cultural history of VeniceThe present painting is attributed to the Italian painter Pietro Longhi (1702-1785). The authorship has been confirmed by a number of Italian scholars, including Giuliano Briganti. Longhi is recorded for his portraits and genre scenes of Venetian society, and his patrons included high-ranking Venetian families. Longhi visited the present theme in more occasions; other hunting scenes, dating from the 1760s are in the Pinacoteca Querini Stampalia in Venice, formerly in the Venetian Donà delle Rose Collection. The painting shows some wear due to its age. The canvas has been relined. In the center of the image a small tear is visible. There are slight areas of retouching to the edges and to the figure of the nobleman. The gilt stucco frame shows some losses. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 55 x 46 cm. The stretcher frame measures 44 x 33.5 cm. The painting is accompanied by an expertise of Giuliano Briganti (24 December 1987).Pietro Longhi (1702-1785)The Venetian painter Pietro Longhi is recorded for his frescoes, altarpieces, portraits, and genre scenes. His patrons included high-ranking Venetian families, for example the Grimani, the Querini, and the Pisani. In 1756, he joined the 'Accademia di pittura e scultura' in Venice. Longhi's early paintings were inspired by the late-Baroque movement. The works of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, who had turned away from the traditions of academic painting, had a great impact on the young painter. Inspired by the innovative artist, Longhi started to paint genre scenes. His detailed, sometimes humorous depictions of Venetian society are a significant source for the cultural history of Venice.
