CHAPLIN'S GIRL - MIRANDA SEYMOUR BOOK.

Lot 18A: CHAPLIN'S GIRL - MIRANDA SEYMOUR BOOK.

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

July 13, 2014, 4:00 PM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10 - £15

Description: In 1931, City Lights introduced Charlie Chaplin's new female star to the world. The film - defiantly silent in the age of talkies - was an immediate and international hit. The actress who played the romantic lead had never been on screen or stage before. Chaplin's film turned her into the most famous girl in the world. Virginia Cherrill was the beautiful daughter of an Illinois rancher, who ran away to live through some of Hollywood's wildest years. She was the adoring first wife who broke Cary Grant's heart when she left him; who turned down the gloriously eligible Maharajah of Jaipur to befriend his wife and rescue her from purdah. Virginia Cherrill presided, during the thirties, over one of England's loveliest houses, as the Countess of Jersey. Everybody sought her friendship. All that eluded her was love. And when she found it, she gave up all she had to marry a handsome and penniless Polish flying ace, whose dream it was to become a cowboy. In this glorious, and undiscovered story of Hollywood, international high society, wartime drama and romance, Miranda Seymour works from unpublished sources to recapture the personality of a woman so vividly enchanting that none could resist her. This is the story of Cinderalla in reverse: of the poor girl who won everything - and gave up all for love. Breathtakingly romantic, exquisitely written, this is the stuff that dreams are made of ...

CHAPLIN THE TAMP'S ODYSSEY SIMON LOUVISH BOOK.

Lot 20A: CHAPLIN THE TAMP'S ODYSSEY SIMON LOUVISH BOOK.

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

July 13, 2014, 4:00 PM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10 - £15

Description: An Everyman who expressed the defiant spirit of freedom, Charlie Chaplin was first lauded and later reviled in the America that made him Hollywood's richest man. He was a figure of multiple paradoxes, and many studies have sought to unveil 'the man behind the mask.' Louvish charts the tale of the Tramp himself through his films - from the early Mack Sennett shorts through the major features (The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator et al.) He weighs the relationship between the Tramp, his creator, and his world-wide fans, and in doing so retrieves Chaplin as the iconic London street-kid who carried the 'surreal' antics of early BritishMusic Hall triumphantly onto the Hollywood screen. Louvish also looks anew at Chaplin's and the Tramp's social and political ideas - the challenge to fascism, defiance of the McCarthyite witch-hunts, eventual 'exile', and last mature disguises as the serial-killer Monsieur Verdoux and the dying English clown Calvero in Limelight. This book is an epic journey, summing up the roots of Comedy and its appeal to audiences everywhere, who revelled in the clown's raw energy, his ceaseless struggle against adversity, and his capacity to represent our own fears, foibles, dreams, inner demons and hopes.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN JOHN MCCABE BOOK.

Lot 22A: CHARLIE CHAPLIN JOHN MCCABE BOOK.

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

July 13, 2014, 4:00 PM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10 - £15

Description: John McCabe, first and foremost, is a film critic. That is essential for anyone who intends to read this book to know. Mr. McCabe looks at the life of Charlie Chaplin through the lens of his movies, and gives wonderful background material on the different films, combining a review of Chaplin's films with the events ongoing in Chaplin's life to tell a cohesive, interesting story. Please note that this does not lead to a glossing over of unpleasant aspects of Charlie's life or personality; Mr. McCabe does an admirable job of revealing Charlie as he truly was, warts and all, tied to a time line of his cinematic history. In addition to being a film critic, John McCabe is a man who definitely does his research. In the course of writing this book, Mr. McCabe read every book and magazine article written in English and French at the time (the book was published in 1978).

OPRAH WINFREY - REFLECTIONS OF AN AMERICAN LEGACY BOOK

Lot 125A: OPRAH WINFREY - REFLECTIONS OF AN AMERICAN LEGACY BOOK

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

July 13, 2014, 4:00 PM GMT

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £25 - £35

Description: The Oprah Winfrey Show came to an end after twenty-five years on television, with Oprah creating her own network. Arguably the most influential television personality of all time, Ms. Winfrey and her show's impact on American culture cannot be overstated. This beautifully illustrated book will explore and celebrate the legacy of the show using written contributions from a stellar group of public figures and images from notable photographers. This book will also feature behind-the-scenes photographs from the Harpo archive, spanning the twenty-five years the show has been on the air, including the farewell season. Each chapter in the book will be dedicated to a theme (e.g., love and relationships, equality, giving, literature) and will open with an essay, written by a public figure closely associated with the topic of the chapter, which will explore how the show has touched people's lives and impacted the conversation around that issue. This essay will be followed by a narrative text, which will guide the reader through the history of Ms. Winfrey's involvement with that topic, including her motivation for engagement, as well as stories about the events, people, and organizations that have acted as touchstones or provided insights along the way. Interwoven in this narrative will be a story or quote from a featured celebrity contributor, who will provide a more personal perspective on the issue at hand. Ms. Winfrey will write the final chapter on the theme of gratitude. Accompanying the essays and narrative text will be images from the show, behind-the-scenes photographs, as well as signature portraits of the contributing celebrities taken by noted photographers.
